Quotes

“Sales and communication, and anything you want to get better at, can be learned.”

“Care without candour is caring about the person’s emotions, and candour without care is caring too much about the person’s potential but not how they feel.”

Takeaways

Childhood Incidents

At the age of two, Sam immigrated to Canada from Taiwan with his parents. Growing up, Sam’s parents taught him Mandarin and used to call him a “chatterbox” when he was little.

However, because he didn’t speak English, he struggled to make friends at school and was introverted. He was also bullied and shunned.

In college, he began earning very well as a meat salesman, which led him to drop out of school at 19. The "cold call scene" in The Wolf of Wall Street taught him that any important skill can be learned.

Influential Groups

Sam’s military father used corporal punishment to make Sam the highly disciplined person he is today. His mother counter-balanced his father with her love, understanding, and compassion.

Taekwondo and playing the piano from a young age instilled discipline in him. The church taught him leadership based on love and compassion.

The cut-throat corporate world did not let him sustain his loving and compassionate leadership style. However, a cancer scare in 2017 made him shift his intention from himself to serving other people.

Temperament and Personality Influences

Sam claims that he was born an extrovert but became an introvert due his experiences in school. He was able to later restore his extroverted self by using acting as a way to become a successful salesman.

Cultural Epiphanies

Sam quit his job at Ledcor when he realized that the culture was not one of employee development.

Advice to an Employer

Sam claims to have been the underdog his whole life and is passionate about nurturing others who have potential. The other person’s willingness and desire to be successful brings out the best in him.
