156. God vs. The Big Bang & Evolution
Where did everything come from? It's perhaps humanity's most profound question, and the answer shapes our entire worldview. While mainstream education presents the Big Bang and evolution as settled science, this episode challenges these narratives by examining their logical and scientific shortcomings.
We journey through the historical shift in American education – from a time when biblical creation was taught in classrooms to today's environment where questioning evolution brands you as unscientific. But what if the emperor has no clothes? The Big Bang theory can't explain how something came from nothing, how an explosion created order rather than chaos, or how life emerged from non-living matter. Meanwhile, evolution struggles with gaps in the fossil record, the complexity of DNA, and the second law of thermodynamics.
Most surprisingly, thousands of respected scientists across disciplines are rejecting Darwin's theory. Over 1,200 scientists worldwide have signed statements expressing skepticism that random mutation and natural selection can explain life's complexity. As Dr. Douglas Axe notes, "Because no scientist can show how Darwin's mechanism can produce the complexity of life, every scientist should be skeptical."
The biblical account offers a refreshingly coherent alternative: "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." This isn't merely a religious position – it's increasingly supported by scientific evidence. The fine-tuning of universal constants, the information-rich nature of DNA, and the order we observe throughout the cosmos all point to intelligent design rather than random chance.
Why does this matter? If we compromise on creation, we weaken the foundation of our faith. Our children deserve to know that science and Scripture aren't opposed – honest scientific inquiry points right back to the Creator. "For in him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible. All things have been created through him and for him" (Colossians 1:16).

The Hello and welcome back to Coffee Talk on the Radiant Mission Podcast. I'm your host, rebecca Twomey, and today we are diving into a big question that comes up very often when did everything come from? For many, the answer is the Big Bang or evolution. These theories are taught as fact in school and they are also pushed through media and they are accepted by much of society. But as believers, we really need to pause and ask do these ideas actually line up with God's word and do they even make sense scientifically? I want to be very clear right from the start I believe in biblical creation, not evolution, and not the big bang plus God, not theistic evolution. So just want to clear that up. That's the perspective that we are going to be diving into today. I believe God's word in Genesis that it is true when it says that he created the heavens and the earth. So let's unpack what that looks like. Let's explore the big bang and evolution and why I personally don't think that they hold up, and why God as creator is honestly the only answer that truly makes sense. So, starting from the beginning, first let's define even what we're talking about the Big Bang or the Big Bang Theory. It says that all matter and energy in the universe came from a single point, and they say that it's around 13 to 14 billion years ago. Now, let's be clear this has changed and fluctuated according to what they say, but currently, right now, this is what they're saying that 13 to 14 billion years ago, this point exploded, rapidly, expanding into the universe that we see today. And then evolution takes it further and it claims that life came from non-life, that single-celled organism somehow developed through random mutations and natural selection into the complex forms of life that we see now, including human beings. These theories, by the way, remove God from the picture. They say that creation happened by chance, not by design. And here's the thing these ideas weren't always taught the way that they are today, weren't always taught the way that they are today.
Rebecca Twomey:For much of America's history, schools actually taught a biblical worldview. You guys, prayer and Bible reading were a part of the classroom, but in the early 1960s court cases like Engle v Vitale, which happened in 1962, and then Abington v Shemp or Shememp however, you pronounce that that was in 1963, they removed prayer and scripture from public education. Not long after that, evolution started creeping in, and my parents actually personally remember this shift. In the 1970s, schools began peppering this Darwin theory of evolution into the curriculum and it wasn't yet the dominant narrative, but it was being introduced and for my family that was a big turning point and actually, if you listen to our homeschool series or if you haven't yet go back in the homeschool series series, or if you haven't yet go back in the homeschool series, my mom comes on to share a little bit more about why she chose to homeschool and I know that curriculum and what was happening with curriculum was a big decision back then. Now think about curriculum today and how much has changed and is changing. And who's dictating curriculum? Who's making these decisions changing and who's dictating curriculum? Who's making these decisions? It's not all cut and dry. So, anyhow, my parents made the decision to pull my oldest brother out of public school and they knew that what was going on with the curriculum was a slippery slope at that time. If you replace God's word with man's theories in the classroom, you replace God's word with man's theories in the classroom. What foundation are children left with? So let's fast forward to today.
Rebecca Twomey:Evolution is not just mainstream. It is taught as fact and if you question it you are a freak and there's something wrong with you, which is probably what most people listening to this episode are also going to think. Students rarely hear that there are scientists who reject it. The Bible has been pushed out and in its place, these secular theories like the Big Bang and evolution are being presented as unquestionable truth. I want to talk about why these theories don't make sense, but then also to let you know that there are thousands upon thousands of scientists who do not believe in evolution and who are questioning these things, so we'll talk about that too.
Rebecca Twomey:Let's first look at the flaws in both the Big Bang and evolution for a second. So first there's a logical problem Something from nothing. Science shows matter and energy cannot create themselves. So where did the singularity of the Big Bang come from? The next is order from chaos. Explosions destroy and scatter. They do not create finely tuned galaxies, solar systems and life. And then next we have life from non-life Abiogenesis, which is the idea that life just pops out of non-living matter. That has never actually been observed. And then the last area that I want to talk about that's a logical problem is random mutations. So mutations generally break things down, they don't build them up. We see disease and disorder now, not complex systems.
Rebecca Twomey:And that brings us now to some scientific problems. There are a lot of scientific problems, and I'll name a few of them. The fossil record gaps are a big one. There are no true transitional fossils. We see distinct species, not half evolved creatures. So that is not supported. This idea of mutation. And then entropy, the second law of thermodynamics, shows that systems move from order to disorder, which is the opposite of what evolution requires. The fine tuning of the universe and the constants of physics, like gravity and the speed of light. They are so precise that even a slight variation would make life impossible. And that points to design, not chance.
Rebecca Twomey:And then, lastly, in this group of scientific problems, is DNA complexity. Dna is like software code, beyond anything that humans can design. There is no scientific explanation for it arising randomly. And that brings me to scientists who are rejecting evolution and the Big Bang, because that is happening. I think it's an exciting thing that more and more scientists are rejecting Darwin's theory and they're questioning the Big Bang. And there is even a. There are actually multiple resources and websites, but the Institute for Creation Research lays out the scientific case against evolution and they point out that Darwin's theory fails to explain complexity, morality and consciousness. Modern science has revealed just how flawed evolutionary ideas really are.
Rebecca Twomey:And then there is the descent from Darwin. It is a statement that is signed by over 1200 scientists worldwide. It includes biologists, chemists, mathematicians, physicists, and they have all gone on record to say that they are skeptical that random mutation and natural selection can explain the complexity of life. Dr Douglas Axe, director of Biologic Institute, and Maxwell, visiting Professor of Molecular Biology at Biola University. He has this quote Because no scientist can show how Darwin's mechanism can produce the complexity of life. Every scientist should be skeptical.
Rebecca Twomey:The fact that most won't admit to this exposes the unhealthy effect of peer pressure on scientific discourse. So think about that. These aren't Christians that are saying this. These are scientists across disciplines saying evolution doesn't work, and yet schools and universities will present it as settled fact. So this is just a call to discernment, and it is okay to feel outraged, it is okay to feel like, oh man, someone's been lying to me, that happens. But it is okay to also say let me question this a little bit, let me look into this, let me see if this makes sense before I choose to believe a narrative that is against God.
Rebecca Twomey:That said, let's talk about what the Bible teaches it is. In contrast, the Bible is consistent and clear. In Genesis 1, we are told in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Not a bang, not billions of years. God is speaking creation into existence. He doesn't say bang and then everything appears all at the same time either. So you know, I know that there's the Christian evolution, or whatever it's called out there, but be careful. Or whatever it's called out there, but be careful. In Hebrews 11, 3, it says by faith, we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. And Psalm 19, 1 reminds us the heavens declare the glory of God. The skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Rebecca Twomey:God is the uncaused cause, as we've talked about in the previous episode, the eternal creator who exists outside of time, unlike the Big Bang. His existence explains why there is something rather than nothing. Let's talk about why this matters for our faith. I always ask why, why, why, why? Because if we compromise on creation, we weaken the foundation of our faith. If Genesis isn't true, then why trust the rest of the Bible? We don't need to bend God with the big bang or evolution to fit with culture.
Rebecca Twomey:Man came up with this stuff. God doesn't need help from man's theories. His word is sufficient and science, when honestly examined it, points right back to him. So for our children and our future generations, this is vital. They are growing up in a world where deception is strong and we must teach them that the Bible is true and that science affirms what God has already revealed. All right, so the big one, heavy one, but succinct, right, quick.
Rebecca Twomey:Let's talk about a few reflection questions that I have today for you to think about as you're going through your day and your week. Do you believe science and faith are opposed, or do you see that they work together under God's design? How does knowing God created everything give you confidence in his power, and what part of creation most shows you his glory? Listen, friends, do not be swayed by theories that leave God out the big bang and evolution. They honestly do not hold up. But God's word stands forever and ever and he created everything with order and purpose and design, and he created you with a plan too.
