Mel Bampton Presents...How Human

Addressing The Gap Between Veteran And Child with Damien Schofield

Lissie Turner Episode 28

Generational trauma is threaded through us all like silver webs that catch bits of debris and snag us up in more ways than we can ever really know. It's just part of being human. How can we prevent passing some of the not so good stuff along, not just to offspring but to anyone who crosses our path?

Meet Damien Schofield – a big fit fella with an enormous heart. Like far too many Generation X-ers Damien grew up down the generational line of a young man deployed, without any choice, to fight in the Vietnam War. A war that saw Australian political policy draft young men from an unlucky dip to go and fight in a war that changed those young men forever, coming home with no systemic support, a role that then often landed heavily on partners and children. This is the story of one man’s refusal to not only participate in generational pass the parcel himself but put an end to that cruel game altogether. When the music stopped on Damien, instead of passing that parcel along, he decided to turn into fuel for campfires, for children and their parents to sit around and create connection. Damien Schofield is the creator of the phenomenal Younger Heroes initiative and bloody legend well worth tuning into.
