Speaker 1:

Welcome to Eden and Amadeus, the podcast. We've got Mitchell Tenpenny joining us a little bit later on in the show and also we'll end things with our Battle of the Sexes recap. I saw this story, eden. Did you see this story as well this morning? I saw it. I did.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, we didn't get a chance to talk about it on the air, but I think it's one of the most interesting things I've seen in a long, long time. I'm not sure if this was in wild or at a zoo, but I feel like it has to be in the wild or it wouldn't have been possible. There was an orangutan that got hurt and they were being observed by a scientist and they reached over to this plant called the Liana plant. Are you familiar with it? No, me neither, but apparently this orangutan took this leaf, started chewing on it this plant has medicinal purposes and got it wet and placed it over the injury that he had, and it's the first time ever in history of scientists studying animals that one purposely used a plant with healing properties to heal themselves. I just find that fascinating.

Speaker 2:

I do too. I think it's incredibly interesting because I constantly will ask myself let's say, I'm walking the dog and she's sniffing something, and then she puts it in her mouth. I wonder if animals have an instinct as to what's poison and what's not poison.

Speaker 1:

I feel like they do, and I know dogs aren't.

Speaker 2:

Obviously she's eaten some things, or I had to take her and you know she got into naproxen once and like a whole bottle and chewed that up and it was not good. So I'm not talking about like around the house, but I'm just wondering in nature, if animals know which berries are poison, which things they should and shouldn't be eating, so why wouldn't they know that some plants have a healing property, like aloe? How did we ever find out about aloe?

Speaker 1:

You know there are a lot of species that camouflage themselves as something that looks dangerous to other, like to a predator. So I know that I know nature knows what's going on around them. But I guess this is just the first time it's ever been observed that it was purposely done, and I remember as a little kid did your dad or mom smoke? No, so as a kid I remember getting stung by like a wasp one time and my dad instantly took his cigarette tobacco out of his cigarette, shoot it and put it on there because I guess it draws the steam out.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I've heard that.

Speaker 1:

And so I instantly thought of that when I saw this story. Like this orangutan knew that this leaf could heal him, I don't know. It's fascinating. It's very fascinating, especially with all the Planet of the Apes movies, like I can picture this happening.

Speaker 2:

Planet of the Apes is opening up Memorial Day too, there's a whole other movie coming out.

Speaker 1:

I've already got my tickets for that.

Speaker 2:

I can't wait, you love that kind of stuff.

Speaker 1:

I love the planet, one of my favorite movies as a kid and, with the exception of the Tim Burton film, all the other Planet of the Apes movies recently have been great.

Speaker 2:

There was a TV show right.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 2:

You're like, yeah, I loved that TV show. I think I knew early on that I didn't like it. It was creepy to me.

Speaker 1:

I had the action figures as a kid, oh really. And there was also this play set. There was like a paper play set where you could like move the houses around on this, like on this cardboard like layout of the city. It was weird, but yeah, I'm a huge fan and I think that's why, when I saw this story, I could picture the orangutans from Planet of the Apes like doing this. You know what I mean.

Speaker 2:

Okay, weren't they chimps on Planet of the Apes, or do we never know?

Speaker 1:

Oh no, there's orangutans oh there are.

Speaker 2:

There are different kinds, yeah.

Speaker 1:

Remember Paul Giamatti played one. I don't. He was fantastic.

Speaker 2:

As an orangutan.

Speaker 1:

As an orangutan.

Speaker 2:

I mean fantastic. I thought they all just looked like. I guess I'm just thinking of the old school ones.

Speaker 1:

And in the Planet of the Apes, all the orangutans seem to be like the old wise, like philosophers, oh, and so you know they have that. Look in their eyes like they're smart. We can tell they're figuring things out.

Speaker 2:

Sure, which are the ones that show their butts? The baboons.

Speaker 1:

I guess that's baboons, yeah.

Speaker 2:

Do they have any baboons?

Speaker 1:

No, I don't think so. It's chimps, it's gorillas and orangutans.

Speaker 2:

Oh, there's gorillas.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, gorillas, they're like their security guards. Of course they are. Do you not know? The Planet of the Apes?

Speaker 2:

No, I have never been a fan. I don't think I've seen any of them.

Speaker 1:

Oh wow, You're missing out.

Speaker 2:

I'm okay, though the thing is I'm okay, so we have a big concert for those who are listening from out of town, and I'm sure that this is something that is coming to your community as well. But Luke Combs is doing these major shows where he is changing his opening act. Sometimes he's going to do more than one stop at a city, like he is in ours. He's doing a Friday night and a Saturday night stadium show, different opening acts, different lineup, he says for every single show.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, every set list is different for every show. It's never been done. To my knowledge, no artist has ever done this.

Speaker 2:

So he's really making waves and everybody in town is excited about him. But also we're all excited for the different lineups, Like when you go tonight, you're going to see Cody Jinks and Hayley Witters.

Speaker 2:

When I go, I will see Jordan Davis and Mitchell Tenpenny, and we had an opportunity to speak. This won't be our first time talking and Mitchell Tenpenny, and we had an opportunity to speak. This won't be our first time talking to Mitchell Tenpenny on this podcast, but we always enjoy him. So we are joined now by M-10, as we're seeing that people are calling him now Cool. How are you?

Speaker 3:

I'm fantastic. Is everybody good over there? Yeah?

Speaker 1:

we're doing great. Everyone's getting so excited about Luke Combs coming to town for two nights.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, I don't get it. He's such a hack. I don't even understand why everyone's excited. No, this has been the best tour man. It's been so insane. I truly just pinch myself every night being able to be out there and get an opportunity to play in front of that crowd and Luke is obviously one of the nicest dudes in the world, so we're all pumped.

Speaker 1:

How many shows have you done so far on this tour with him? Or do you even know?

Speaker 3:

We just started, so this last week was our third. I've done two other stadiums with him the year prior, so five total, but this tour three. So me and Jordan Davis. We've been talking about it for years. We're touring together right now on Thursdays and Fridays and then we hop over to stadiums with him on Saturdays. So it's one of the coolest tours I've ever been on, Not one of the coolest. It is the coolest tour I've ever been on.

Speaker 2:

That is so crazy, coolest. It is the coolest tour I've ever been on.

Speaker 3:

That is so crazy, it almost sounds like camp it is, and jordan's one of my, one of my best buddies, and we've been talking about doing this for forever and and then it just lined up perfect when luke called us both. Um, yeah, it's just a big summer camp right now with all the fellas, and we've toured together back in the day. So my band and crew know, his band and crew and everybody just it really is that's a good way to put it. It feels like a big summer camp so do you get to do?

Speaker 2:

I mean, obviously you're busy, obviously you're running around like crazy, but when you get to some of these towns you get any downtime at all, like that to are you gonna get to golf in jacksonville. Do you get to play golf or do anything fun like that when you're here?

Speaker 3:

we, we, we do love to golf. Uh, I think I think we might be playing golf in Jacksonville. A couple of these plays weren't with Carolina. This weekend we're doing a NASCAR thing. We try to make sure that we take in the environment and where we're at and try to just enjoy what that town has to offer, because we've toured a lot over the years and sometimes you're so rushed you don't even know what city you're in. The good thing about these tours, especially luke hall, was they're so dialed in, like the sound checks are always on time, like you really can stick to a schedule, so it's really easy to plan stuff around and have some fun during the days I saw you for the first time in concert, uh, with jason aldean, uh, recently, and I same with you, right, right, and I had no idea.

Speaker 1:

I mean, I knew how great you are as a writer and a performer on record, but man live, what a show.

Speaker 3:

Oh, thank you so much. That means truly the world, thank you.

Speaker 2:

So who do you listen to? I got to ask you who you listen to when you know, obviously, your contemporaries, the people that you tour with the people that are on the radio at the same time. You are, but like who else, because I know that you talk about how Iris by Goo Goo Dolls was so influential to you. I saw you were calling out to Swifties recently asking them to tell you which songs so like do you just like try to dabble in every single thing.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, you know, I'm born and raised in Nashville. I grew up in the songwriting community, so I grew up immersed in country music and the history of it, but also just songwriters, so I listened to everything. I truly love every kind of music. I was in bands, I was a drummer, I was a screamer for hardcore bands. I've been a little bit of everything in pop bands, country bands. I just love music. I love great storytelling, I love great melodies and, like I said, I'm from Nashville so my heart's always going to go back to country. But you know, I've been influenced by a lot of different things and I don't know. I just love great singers and great storytellers. If you've got a great melody, you don't necessarily have to be the most amazing singer, like a Celine Dion or a Dolly Parton style, but if you've got a great melody and a hooky melody and you're telling a great story, I'm in, I'm always in.

Speaker 1:

We have that in common with you. Eden and I are both kids of the 80s and we both love multiple genres. We worked in Top 40 radio for about 17 years. Oh nice, and now we've been in country for about 17 years, so we're like you, we just love everything.

Speaker 2:

A A good song is a good song is a good song is a good song, absolutely.

Speaker 3:

I mean, look at the Judds back in the day and Wynonna. There were so many crossovers that caught my attention back in the day and I couldn't tell. I was like Mom, are we on country radio or top 40? You know what I love that blurred line. Some people are big genre sticklers and it just doesn't make sense to me. When you pick up a guitar, it doesn't have a genre on it.

Speaker 2:

I love when I hear a Top 40 song or a hip-hop song sung country and vice versa. It's just so cool because it really just shows how a song can translate like that. Can we go back to you being a screamer like a hardcore screamer. Obviously we can't ask you for an example, because we can't let you damage those vocal cords. But, give us a feel for like what, did you like dress a certain way, or are you totally living that life?

Speaker 3:

No, I mean I still kind of dress. That's why I call it. I coined the phrase farm emo.

Speaker 2:

Farm emo. Yes, Nice.

Speaker 3:

Pretty much. It's basically all of us my friends in Nashville. You Nice, it's pretty much basically all of us my friends in Nashville, from like Dan and Shay to Devin Dawson to Russell Dickerson, even Thomas Schrader A bunch of us come from that. Now, jelly Roll too, from that world and we write country music. So I call it Farm Emo. I like the screen, it gives you that emotion. It's like the pump-up music, the breakdowns where you'd be like, oh no, and just go for it. It was great.

Speaker 1:

It's fun for us too. Yeah, I love the Hardy stuff where he really just like goes off.

Speaker 3:

Well, I don't even know how I skipped Hardy. He's a great friend, that's exactly it. Hardy does some of his. We does a great job with it, bringing in that rock influence, and so, yeah, we got a little bit of that on this new record too.

Speaker 2:

As long as we're talking about other artists that were playing on the radio these days, are you planning to do any strips, like? Bailey Zimmerman's been taking his clothes off a lot on stage. You don't have that in your future, do you?

Speaker 3:

Well, if I took my shirt off, it would be wider than Bailey Zimmerman's pants. So we don't want to do that. The lights, we would have to have everyone sign a waiver. They would pass out due to blindness and so no, and I don't look, I don't have the six-pack of the young'un that he does, I don't know. It just wouldn't be the best for everybody's viewing experience if I did that.

Speaker 1:

I'm with you. I'm so white. I've lived in Florida my entire life and I am so white, it is pathetic. I'm like white out.

Speaker 3:

I just burn. Yeah, me too. I get a suntan from the lights every night. That's all I need.

Speaker 1:

It's like burn and peel. That's my whole life.

Speaker 3:

I'm right there with you, brother.

Speaker 2:

I don't see Luke Combs taking his shirt off Anytime soon either.

Speaker 3:

Maybe me and Bruce Combs can do it together and run and jump and smash bellies together. Put a beer can in the middle of it.

Speaker 2:

Not that anyone needed any motivation to come to the show this weekend but, right there, you know, because anything could happen.

Speaker 1:

Oh, and there are pool. We have a pool at Everbank Stadium as well, that's right, so you guys could do like a belly flop into the pool.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, and then there would be no more pool. So that would be. It Be a splash zone.

Speaker 2:

Is that what we're hearing? You say it. Listen, we are so stoked that you are now going to be part of this. And you know, just lucky us all right.

Speaker 3:

Well, y'all are too kind, thank you. It's uh, it's been an incredible tour, and to be out there with friends and this is uh, um, I don't know just an experience we're trying to soak in, and uh, enjoy every moment of so. Thank you for saying that.

Speaker 1:

Luke Combs is in town this Friday and Saturday night. Mitchell Tenpenny will be there on Saturday night with your friend Jordan Davis.

Speaker 3:

Yes, let's do this, you can call him Mitchell Tenpenny.

Speaker 2:

I call him.

Speaker 3:

Jordan might take his shirt off. He's tall and handsome. We'll figure it out.

Speaker 2:

I was going to say hands on me, we'll figure it out.

Speaker 3:

I was gonna say you know, we like to call you m10. I mean, that's what your friends. Thank you, yeah. I mean I never had a nickname growing up. No one ever gave me one. And then, after I signed a record deal, people started calling me that and, uh, for a minute I was like man, this kind of feels weird. And now it just feels like my name. I get called it all the time. So I got an organic nickname. I didn't come up with it. So, thank you, it feels good to have a nickname and feel, uh, feel special every now and then and m10 is a nickname that's tough.

Speaker 2:

It's still tough enough for you. It's a good it's a good one listen we we wish you the safest of travels and we can't wait to hear you thank you, guys.

Speaker 3:

You're a lot of fun.

Speaker 1:

It's going to be a great weekend he's always so much fun to chat with. But I'll tell you something I don't think I can ever call him M10. I can't either.

Speaker 2:

I mean, that's it's what his social media is. It's what the record label sent us emails as they're like do you want to talk to M10? I'm like, let me read the body of this email and see who they're talking about.

Speaker 1:

I'm like no, but I'd love to speak with Mitchell Tenpenny.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, let's have it.

Speaker 1:

It just name for me. Yeah, and my name's Amadeus.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, that's coming from Amadeus. But like they did that with Cody Johnson, everybody calls him Kojo yeah.

Speaker 1:

Okay, I guess I can see that a little more than M10. To me M10 sounds like a firearm.

Speaker 2:

To me M10 sounds like if you're trying to have the planet of the apes and you don't want anybody to get like too humanized, so you give them all names like your m10 oh, you dehumanize them, I'm trying to do a call back to our original conversation about planet of the apes. But yeah, or like a droid name a droid, it is a good droid name absolutely r2d2, c3po m10, that's it all right, let's get into our week-long rivalry.

Speaker 2:

it went, did it go back and forth? I'm trying to think Did it go back and forth? It?

Speaker 1:

kind of did yeah, yeah it kind of did.

Speaker 2:
