Curious about lipids? Do you know what to do with LPa and ApoB?
Listen in this week as host Karli Burridge speaks with Josh Wageman, author of the newly released book titled: "The Home Security System and the Lipid Neighborhood: Un-Complicating Cholesterol and Cardiovascular Disease"
It sounds like the start of a bad joke…or perhaps a confusingly awesome dream. A Physical Therapist, ex-collegiate track athlete, Ivy league grad, Youth Pastor, and some dude with a PhD start having a conversation about cholesterol. And then you realize all those guys are THE SAME GUY, and that guy takes you on a whimsical pilgrimage that results in YOU having a framework for NOT having heart attacks, strokes, and dementia. Employing a smorgasbord of metaphors, pictures, and catchphrases, The Home Security System and the Lipid Neighborhood serves as a valuable reference for clinicians and non-clinicians alike, bringing refreshing relatability to complex biochemical topics. Through a lipid-lens, you’ll learn, laugh, and love your way through its pages…and in the end, you’ll undoubtedly add “life to your years!”

This week, host Karli Burridge speaks with her colleague, Dr. Anthony Auriemma, about how Dr. Auriemma has grown the obesity medicine program at Ascension to 10 locations in the Chicagoland area, as well as about the launch of the Illinois Obesity Society, and how it has grown to one of the biggest and most active State obesity organizations in the country. Dr. Auriemma taps into his JD degree, as he summarizes the steps that organizations must take to successfully start a non-profit, and provides tips and pearls on growing an organization.
Dr. Anthony Auriemma graduated Cum Laude from Hope College before receiving his Doctor of Medicine Degree at Loyola University, Chicago. He also earned a Juris Doctor from The John Marshall Law School where he graduated Cum Laude. As you can tell, he’s a real slacker.
Dr. Auriemma completed his residency in Family Medicine at Hinsdale Hospital where he served as Chief Resident. He is Board Certified in both Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine, and serves as Medical Director for Ascension Weight Loss Solutions, which is where I work with him clinically. He is a Board member and Fellow of the Obesity Medicine Association, and also serves as an alternate delegate at the American Medical Association representing the Obesity Medicine Association. He was the recipient of OMA’s Dr. Vernon B Astler award in 2022, and he is a founding member and past president of the Illinois Obesity Society, which was founded in 2019, and which is currently one of the largest and most active state obesity organizations in the country.

Join host Karli Burridge this week as she unpacks the benefits of fitness training with Dr. John Jakicic. What functional impacts would exercise have beyond weight loss and weight maintenance? What types of assessments give the best picture of muscle mass and muscle function? And how are exercise recommendations impacted by the development of newer, highly effective anti-obesity medications? Listen as Dr. Jakicic and Karli share from both their professional experience and current medical research on how to better implement physical activity goals into patient care.
Dr. John M. Jakicic holds a PhD in exercise physiology from the University of Pittsburg and is a Research Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine in the Division of Physical Activity and Weight Management. His primary area of research is the study of obesity and body weight regulation and their relationship to chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and others. Within this research area he has a particular focus on physical activity and the implementation of novel interventions to enhance engagement and effectiveness, which includes a history of research to determine the appropriate dose of physical activity for long-term body weight regulation.
