In this episode of the DoorWays® Podcast, Rachel Middleton explores the remarkable story of Abigail from 1 Samuel 25—a woman remembered not for power or position, but for wisdom, humility, and courageous action. Married to a foolish man and caught in the middle of a crisis she didn't create, Abigail stepped between David's anger and disaster with words that changed history.

Much of life can feel mundane - we're doing the same things over and over. But in that repetition of being faithful, something is forged in our character. And then when you experience that high-stakes situation, like Abigail is in, where she steps into a conflict that will end in life or death, she is prepared to speak with discernment. So that daily repetition of seeking to live our lives on the path of wisdom and imitate the Lord Jesus trains our character to respond like Jesus when the conflict and when the trials come.
Ric ShieldsThere are moments in life when everything can turn on a single decision, a single conversation, or a single voice willing to step into chaos. In 1 Samuel 25, we meet a woman most people would have overlooked. She wasn't a king, she wasn't a prophet, she wasn't even in charge of her own household. Her husband was harsh, foolish, and reckless. And yet, in a moment of escalating anger and impending violence, she became the difference between destruction and restraint. And while David, that David, was gearing up to settle a score with bloodshed, that woman quietly and courageously stepped into the path of his rage. Her only tools were wisdom, humility, and courage under pressure. And here's the question that presses in on us today. What do you do when you find yourself in the middle of someone else's mess but you know you have the opportunity to change the outcome?
Ric ShieldsThat woman's name is Abigail, and today we're going to explore what it looks like to live unseen, unheard, and yet unstoppable.
Ric ShieldsJoining me today is Rachel Middleton, originally from Buffalo, New York. She lived and worked for five years as a missionary in Mexico City. She then earned a master's degree in spiritual formation and soul care from the Talbot School of Theology at Biola University. This education included formal training as a spiritual director. It's a ministry of encouragement that she continues to practice by offering direction to women both locally and abroad in English and Spanish. In January 2019, she joined the Ministry of DoorWays® and she serves as the associate director of Simply Sisters®, a ministry committed to encouraging women amid life-altering circumstances. She loves her husband, Mark, and her littles, Lydia and Titus, and a yet unnamed little girl due to be born this fall. Rachel, thank you for joining me today.
Rachel MiddletonRic, it is such a pleasure to be here with you. I'm so grateful for your friendship over the years, for your godly influence on my life. I'm very thankful for you and Sheila giving me the opportunity to be part of the ministry of Simply Sisters®. And I'm very thankful that you and Sheila were the wise friends who introduced me to my now husband, Mark Middleton.
Ric ShieldsWe're at least as grateful as you, maybe even more. I don't know. But we're grateful you took the bait and made the move. That's good.
Ric ShieldsRachel, for those who may not be familiar with Abigail's story found in 1 Samuel chapter 25, would you please give us just a 30-second overview?
Rachel MiddletonAbigail is a wise woman who is married to a foolish man. And it seems like everyone in the story knows it. When her husband insults David, who is on a path to be king one day, David prepares to take revenge on Nabal and his household. Abigail wastes no time in stepping in and getting involved in the situation. She goes directly to David with gifts and bold yet humble words, which stop David in his path and save the lives of her household. Not long after, her husband Nabal dies and she becomes David's wife.
Ric ShieldsNow, I thought this was ancient history, but you said she's really this classy, intelligent, kind woman, married to a stupid, reckless husband. That sounds like 2026. I don't understand.
Ric ShieldsSo what's happening in this story between David and Abigail's husband, Nabal, and what made it so that this moment became so volatile?
Rachel MiddletonDavid and his men are warriors, and they provided a valuable service for Nabal and his shepherds in the wilderness. So they served as protection for his men and his flocks. And so, due to this kindness, it would then be customary that David and his men would be welcome at sheep shearing to participate in the feasting or the celebration of a good season, so to speak. And so David's expectation is that he and his men will be fairly compensated for this protection that they offered to Nabal's shepherds. And this is totally a reasonable expectation according to the culture at the time. And so when David sends his men to Nabal, he makes his request with peace, and his voice is one of kindness. But Nabal responds in completely the opposite manner with utter rudeness. And David receives his response exactly how it was intended - as an insult. And David is a warrior, and he's now coming against Nabal with 400 fellow warriors. This group is not coming for a friendly chat or to just kind of explain a lesson to Nabal. They're coming to wipe him and his household out.
Ric ShieldsIn fact, he says to his men, all right, strap on your sword.
Rachel MiddletonGet ready.
Ric ShieldsWe're going and we're going to bring it into this whole deal.
Rachel MiddletonGet ready to ride. And I think it's worth noting here, Ric, that David has his facts correct. He was insulted. His facts are correct, but not the condition of his heart, right? He was insulted by Nabal, by his words, by his actions, but rather than pausing how to respond or even choosing to show respect or restraint, like he does again and again with his interactions with King Saul, David is impetuous to seek revenge. And that intent of his heart is what we are going to see the Lord point to through the words of Abigail as we continue the story.
Ric ShieldsWell, scripture describes Nabal as harsh and foolish, but Abigail as discerning and beautiful - points that out pretty clearly. That's a really big contrast because that doesn't say that Nabal was good looking. He may have been really gnarly. We don't know. He acted gnarly. He probably looked gnarly too. So what does that contrast reveal? Not just about them, but about how God works through unlikely people in difficult circumstances.
Rachel MiddletonIt is quite the contrast that we are given of Nabal and Abigail's character. And I think that scripture is so intentional in pointing this out. We know culturally at this time that arranged marriages were common, right? So we can probably safely assume that Abigail didn't have much choice in this marriage. However, by giving us this contrast, Scripture is also reminding us that her character stayed intact. Rather than becoming foolish or ill-natured like her husband was known for, she is known for being of good understanding, for being intelligent, sensible, discerning. These are all English words used to describe her in various translations that I looked at of this same chapter.
Rachel MiddletonSo rather than succumb to her difficult environment, she's known as a wise woman. And her good understanding or sensibility is something that the Lord is going to use in this very tense and volatile situation.
Rachel MiddletonAnd I wonder if there could be an application there for us. When we're in a difficult environment, are we able to reflect wise characteristics of the God in whose image we were created rather than become like our surroundings?
Ric ShieldsSomething you said earlier, I want to follow up on. You don't feel like you and Mark had an arranged marriage, do you?
Rachel MiddletonNo, sir.
Ric ShieldsJust because you moved to Tulsa, we introduced you and everything worked out. It wasn't arranged.
Rachel MiddletonNo, it was arranged in the plan of God, and we are very happy about it.
Ric ShieldsOkay. I wanted to make sure. I thought that was the case.
Rachel MiddletonGood clarification.
Ric ShieldsYes. Abigail steps into a situation she didn't create, and the whole situation could have been easily avoided.
Rachel MiddletonYeah.
Ric ShieldsWhat does it take for someone to step into conflict rather than run from it?
Rachel MiddletonI think it takes knowing when to hold your tongue and when to speak, and then how to speak. When Abigail's told by a servant who comes to her and says, Look, David sent this message. This is how your husband responded. She doesn't waste time in bemoaning her husband's response. She doesn't waste time in going to argue with her husband. She probably learned by now that was going to go nowhere.
Ric ShieldsProbably.
Rachel MiddletonAnd so instead, she acts within the bounds of what she can control. She packed up an abundance of food to take to David and his men, and she immediately sets out to speak with David. She knows that this is a conflict that is escalating very quickly and can end in death for her and her entire household. And so she prepares to do what she can. She can't change her husband's character. She can't go back and change what he said to David, right? But her hope is that she can change the outcome of what is coming.
Ric ShieldsAnd her response is not reactive. It's
Rachel MiddletonNo.
Ric ShieldsIt's measured, it's humble, strategic. What stands out to you about how Abigail approaches David? And what can we learn about responding wisely when tensions are high?
Rachel MiddletonThis is such a great question, Ric, because I think there is so much that we can learn from how Abigail approaches David. I think her and Nabal were wealthy. We can see that in the context of scripture by all the food she had at her disposal to gather up and send. But she doesn't come to David relying on wealth or any sort of status, right? She approaches him just as you've already pointed out in a manner that is very humble. She starts by taking the blame for something that she didn't even do. She says, if I would have interacted with your servants - I wasn't there - but there's this inference, if I would have been there, if I would have known, there would have been a different outcome. I would have given a different response. And then she immediately moves the conversation to remind David of who is in control here.
Rachel MiddletonSo in verse 26, as she's speaking with him, she says, Since the Lord kept you from murdering and taking vengeance into your own hands. And then in verse 28, she says, The Lord will surely reward you with a lasting dynasty, for you are fighting the Lord's battles. Abigail recognizes that even though this situation seems dire, the Lord is the one who is in control. And she's realigning David back to this reality with her words.

Ric ShieldsIt's hard to believe. We're discussing the story of Abigail from the book of 1 Samuel, chapter 26. We see that Abigail's words literally stop David from slaughtering all of the men who are part of Nabal's household. So what does this teach us about the power of timely, truth-filled speech?
Rachel MiddletonWhen we are angry or when we're offended, it's really easy to only focus in the moment, right? So for David, he wants vengeance. For me, when I'm wronged or I feel like someone speaks in a wrong manner to me, I want to respond angrily to that person or defend myself. Or if I can't confront them right away, my frustration may result in taking that frustration or anger out on someone else, right?
Rachel MiddletonWhen Abigail reminds David that he is going to become king, it's as if she's saying, okay, look, in the grand scheme of things, your identity and the plan that God has for your life is so much bigger than this one incident or this one insult. When we're wronged or when someone acts foolishly or wrongly against us, we still have a choice in how to respond. And that choice has consequences.
Rachel MiddletonSo Abigail is reminding David that if he responds with vengeance, he will have to live with the results of those actions and whether that was right before the Lord. She is reorienting David to reality, telling him what reality may look like if he rushes into bloodshed.
Rachel MiddletonProverbs tells us a gentle answer turns away wrath, and a harsh word stirs up anger. Our words can have the power to bring life or death, to add fuel to someone's anger, or to help diffuse the situation, like Abigail does. So the question I might ask myself when I'm in a high-stakes conversation or a conflict, such as Abigail, is one to reorient me to reality. How should I respond with my words in a way that is pleasing to God?
Ric ShieldsAnd it's really interesting. Abigail takes responsibility for the situation, even though Nabal is the one at fault.
Rachel MiddletonExactly.
Ric ShieldsHow can we navigate that tension today? Stepping in without being crushed by a crisis that isn't even ours.
Rachel MiddletonTension is such an appropriate word that you used right there. From Abigail's perspective, I would imagine that it wasn't the first time she had to take responsibility for her husband's foolishness, right? That's what he was known for. And how absolutely frustrating and exhausting that must have been for her to live with someone like that. But also, as we've previously mentioned, she knew what was at stake here, people's lives. And so she could see the value of responding with humility and letting the Lord use her words. She didn't know what the outcome would be, but she was willing to get involved.
Rachel MiddletonAnd I think that willingness, Ric, is something that we can learn from the story. When we're in a difficult situation, asking the Lord, how can I speak? How can I act with wisdom? What would you have me do, Lord? Help me not to be overwhelmed by what I can't control, but make my heart willing to say and do what I can and what is right in your eyes.
Ric ShieldsAbigail reminds David of his future; that he's destined to be king. I'm not quite certain how she knows that. Maybe God revealed it to her, or maybe somehow the word got out in the community. I don't know. But why is it so important to anchor people to who they are becoming, not just what they're feeling in the moment?
Rachel MiddletonIn verse 29, she says, even when you are chased by those who seek to kill you, your life is safe in the care of the Lord your God, secure in his treasure pouch. I love that word picture there. So she's reminding David of the special love and care that the Lord has for him. It's the Lord who's been protecting him from King Saul, from other enemies, not David's own abilities as a warrior or the force that he has around him. She reminds David of the faithfulness of the Lord in the past. And now she moves to remind him of the identity he has and what the Lord has called him to become. In verse 30, she says, When the Lord has done all he has promised and made you leader of Israel, don't let this be a blemish on your record.
Ric ShieldsAnd David was ready to take revenge.
Rachel MiddletonHe was - so ready.
Ric ShieldsOh, he was ready. And he's on the way. It's not like, yeah, let's think about it, give it a couple of days, make a plan. No, they just got up and go. But Abigail intervened and God ultimately dealt with Nabal. What does this story teach us about trusting God with justice instead of just taking matters into our own hands?
Rachel MiddletonPart of being human means that we often want things on our timetable, right?
Ric ShieldsWe want we want them right away too.
Rachel MiddletonExactly. You took the words right out of my mouth. We want to see quick results and we want to be a part of the process, or at least feel like we were a part of the process. David wants justice, and that in and of itself is not a bad thing, right? God is a God of justice. And we see that over and over again in the pages of scripture. The problem is when we try to determine on our own when and how that justice should be served. And trusting God with justice is acknowledging that while I may want to see justice and I may want to be the one that makes that happen, that probably has more to do with my desire for control.
Rachel MiddletonSo when I can pause my words and my actions and have a conversation with the Lord or even multiple conversations with the Lord about a situation, it reminds me that God is sovereign, that he's the one in control, and that I can trust him to bring justice because that is part of the very nature of who God is.
Ric ShieldsAbigail didn't hold a public position, but her actions altered the course of history. What does her story say to those who feel unseen or unheard today?
Rachel MiddletonYou know, we don't know much about the rest of Abigail's life and what other influence she had on other situations. But we know, as we talked about at the beginning of this conversation, that she was known for being sensible and for being intelligent. And I don't think that reputation was forged overnight. This was the result of her being faithfully wise and consistent of character, even while being married to someone who is known for their foolishness. And much of life can feel mundane. We're doing the same things over and over. And I say this with humor, but as the mother of toddlers, I often feel like that is most of my life right now.
Ric ShieldsYeah, really.
Rachel MiddletonThe same meals, changing the same diapers, washing the same clothes, saying the same thing over and over again. Don't climb up on the counter, you're gonna fall off and get hurt. The same things over and over and wondering, are you even paying attention? Are you even listening? But in that repetition of being faithful, or in Abigail's case, being sensible, something is forged in our character. And then when you experience that high-stakes situation, like Abigail is in, where she steps into a conflict that will end in life or death, she is prepared to speak with discernment.
Rachel MiddletonSo that daily repetition of seeking to live our lives on the path of wisdom and imitate the Lord Jesus in many days where we feel unseen or unheard, trains our character to respond like Jesus when the conflict and when the trials come.
Ric ShieldsRachel, I'm so glad you helped us get a closer look at Abigail. Please help us wrap this conversation up with some words of encouragement that we can gain from this story.
Rachel MiddletonPsalm 105:4 tells us look to the Lord in his strength, seek his face always. As we learn to look to the Lord to become like him in our daily lives, he will lead us in the path of wisdom. It's his wisdom that we need to know when to speak, when not to speak, how to act in situations of chaos, these important characteristics that we see in the life of this sensible woman, Abigail.
Rachel MiddletonAnd finally, remember the story of your identity, where God has brought you from, and the care that he has for your life. Knowing who you are in Christ will remind you how to respond, even when facing tension or conflict. And this is what Abigail did when speaking to King David, reminding him of who he was and what God was calling him to be. And he listened to her words and he changed his course of action.
Rachel MiddletonMay we know the wisdom of Christ and how to imitate him with our words and our actions.
Ric ShieldsAbigail never raised her voice, but she changed the course of a king. And maybe that's the reminder we need today. You don't have to be loud to be powerful. You just have to be faithful in the moment God places in front of you. Listen again to David's words in 1 Samuel 25:32-33. Praise be to the Lord who has sent you today to meet me. May you be blessed for your good judgment and for keeping me from bloodshed.
