John 5 The Lord of the Sabbath | Terri Brady

The Shepherd's Church

Terri Brady   Nov 6, 2024   WOW, Lesson 7, John 5

  1. Jesus is Lord who heals (5:1-9)
    1. Man was chosen out of a multitude.
      1. The lame man didn’t do the choosing- and neither do we.
      2. The lame man didn’t have faith in order to be well.
      3. Jesus did it all.
        1. An act of grace to display God’s glory… just like our salvation.
    2. Jesus spoke and got the man to look at Him instead of the water.
    3. Man received a healed body and then a healed soul.
      1. 5:14: “Behold, you are made well; go and sin no more,” indicates spiritual salvation.
      2. Sometimes it is the opposite order – healed souls whose bodies await their replacement parts. But they’re coming! A different lesson for a different day, but don’t lose heart.

Principles:

  • Jesus is the sole chooser (and soul chaser) of our salvation; glory belongs nowhere else.
  • God’s healing doesn’t always look like we pictured.
    • His ways and thoughts are higher than our own. (Is 55: 8-9)
    • He gives us more than we can ask or imagine (Eph 3:20)

Applications:

  • How often do I have a solution to the problem and I feel like if God doesn’t provide THAT solution (someone to put me in the water) then there’s no solution… when all the while God had something even greater planned that I couldn’t imagine!
  • Where am I looking for “water to move” (some way of fixing the problem) instead of trusting the One who holds all in His hands?

  2.   Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath (5:10-18)

  • Turning point in ministry: Jewish authorities sought to kill Jesus. (5:16,18)
  • Lame man at the pool is healed by Jesus, but all Pharisees “see” is
    1. He did “work” by lifting his mat on the Sabbath.
    2.  Jesus did work by healing on the Sabbath.
    3. Jesus claimed to be God.

Principles:

  • No legalism (man’s rule) outweighs God’s law.
  • Christ IS our Sabbath Rest; we are free to rest in Him.

Applications:

  • What am I missing by focusing on the letter of the Law instead of the Son of God?
  • What list in my head is leading to my pride or my depression?
  • We are free in Christ… feel free to act like it.

   3.   Jesus and the Lord are One (5:19-47)

  •  5:19-30 Equality of Christ with the Father: superpowers
    1. Power to act:  He can do what God does (5:19)
    2. Power of Life and Resurrection (5:21)
    3. Power of Judgment (5:22, 27-29)
    4. Deserving of Honor (5:23)
  • 5:31-47 Witnesses taking the stand (testifiers)
    1. Himself (5:31)
    2. John the Baptist (5:33, 35)
    3. His works (5:36)
    4. God the Father (5:37-38)
    5. Scripture (5:39-40)
    6. Moses (5:45-47)
        1. Moses wrote many things that foreshadowed the coming of the Messiah.
          1. Jesus IS the Passover Lamb, as those who put their faith in His death and the blood He shed are rescued from death. (John 3:16-18)
          2. Like the manna in the desert, Jesus is the Bread from Heaven (John 6:51) that satisfies our spiritual hunger and gives us life.
          3. Like the water that sprung from the rock, Jesus is the living water (John 7:37) that satisfies our spiritual thirst.
          4. Like the snake lifted in the desert so that those doomed could look upon it and be saved, Jesus was lifted up so that we can look upon Jesus and be saved from spiritual death. (John 3:14-15)
          5. Jesus is the offspring of the woman spoken of in Genesis 3 that would crush the head of Satan (Genesis 3:15)
