JESUS ANOINTED IN BETHANY

  • Parallel passages

    • Matthew 26:6-13
    • Mark 14:3-9
  • What about Luke 7:36-50?
    • Differences
      • Simon the Pharisee, not Simon the Leper.
      • Woman not named was a “sinner,” not Mary the sister of Lazarus
      • The time was early in Jesus’s ministry, not the last week
      • The point of the story is “He who is forgiven much, loves much” – not anointing Jesus for his death
    • Conclusion – these must have been two separate instances
  • Heart Contrast of Mary and Judas
    • Mary
      • An extravagant gift
      • A declaration of her total devotion to Jesus
      • A fragrant offering
      • A memorialized act of selflessness
    • Judas
      • A complaint regarding monetary worth
      • A disingenuous “caring” for the poor
      • A legacy of thievery
  • Heart Contrast of the Crowd and the Chief Priests
    • Crowd
      • Followed Jesus because of miracles
    • Chief Priests
      • Plotted to kill Jesus and Lazarus
      • Desire to keep more Jews from leaving their influence

JESUS ARRIVES IN JERUSALEM

    • Palm branches
    • Hosanna
    • Riding on a donkey
  • The reactions
    • Disciples
    • Crowd
    • Pharisees

JESUS ASKED FOR BY GREEKS

  • God-fearers in Jerusalem for the Passover
  • Asked Philip to see Jesus
  • Jesus’s teaching
    • The time has come
    • Parable of the grain of wheat
    • The call to lay down your life
    • “My soul is troubled”
    • “Glorify your name”
    • Key verse 32 – “And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”
    • Believe in the light

JESUS ABHORRED BY JEWS

  • Though many followed, few believed
  • Even his rejection was the fulfillment of prophecy
  • Many “believed” but wouldn’t confess him before others

JESUS ADDRESSES THE CROWD

  • Belief in him is belief in God.
  • I am the light.
  • I came to save the world.
  • My authority comes from the Father.
  • My words come from the Father.

QUESTIONS TO ASK OURSELVES

  • In what ways am I like Mary and in what ways am I more like Judas?
  • Am I unashamed to be known as a Christ-follower even when the cost is high?
  • Is my faith in Christ or in a messiah of my own imagination?
  • Is my life driven by the purposes of God for me, or my own agenda?
  • Do I rejoice daily in my Savior’s obedience to die on a cross on my behalf?
