* Trials and hearings (19:1-16)

  • “Team Roman Empire” and “Team Jews” combine against Jesus
  • Proclamations of innocence
  • Mockings and abuse

Principles:

  • The Man who said “I have overcome the world” (16:33) doesn’t look like the victor on this earth- and neither will we.
  • The judges of this earth have perverted justice, so be sure we are right with the only True Judge.
  • The reason Jesus was sent for crucifixion had nothing to do with Him and everything to do with us.

Applications:

  • There is only one trial for you and me: Do you believe?

* Crucifixion (19:17-37)

    1. Who was present
    2. 7 statements from the cross
    3. Unnatural events in the land
    • Darkness Luk 23:44-45;
    • Earthquake Matt 27:51;
    • Tombs opened Matt 27:52-53;
    • The veil of the temple torn in two. Mark 15:38

Principles:

  • When Jesus taught, “You will be hated by everyone,” (Matt 10:22) He knew He would live an example of that hatred first.
    • Christ’s greatest agony did not come from physical pain (even of the cross), emotional pain (when all friends have left), or prideful pain (when humiliated, naked and hanging with criminals in front of a watching world), but from being separated from the Father for even “just a few” hours.
  • Even Christ had to die to be raised. So too must we.
  • We are meant to “survey” the wondrous cross.
    • Heb 12:3: “For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.”

Applications:

  • Jesus Christ gave up His life for us, can we not live for Him?
  • Where can we “die to self” and look on Him? (Heb 12:2)

*  Burial (19:38-42)

  1. Two unlikely converts take Jesus to be buried
  • Who they were
  • What they risked

Principles:

  • Risking the temporary is necessary to gain the eternal.
  • We are meant to perform for an audience of One.

Applications:

  • What part of my Christian life am I trying to compartmentalize: acting like a Christian in some situations, and hiding my faith in others?
  • What could WE offer with our riches for such a time as we are called?
  • Where am I missing out on the relationship with Him, because like a pharisee, I have made rules my god above God?
    • Do I recall that I am performing for an audience of One?
      • “Nothing is important except that which is eternal.” – Amy Carmichael

*  Prophecies fulfilled

  1. Jesus predicted His death many times (Mark 10:33-34; Luke 18:33)
  2. 28 prophecies fulfilled in John 19 alone, for eg.
  • Psalm 22:18 (lots for clothing), Ps 69:21 (vinegar).
  • Psalm 34:20/Exodus 12:46 (no bones broken).
  • Isaiah 53:5, 9 (pierced; grave with wicked; with rich man in death)
  • Zechariah 12:10 (piercing).
  1. Prophecies pre-dated crucifixion’s invention
  2. GREAT things yet to come

Principles:

  • Having seen prophecies come true in the past should give us comfort to trust Him with our future.

Applications:

  • Where are we losing sight of the future by focusing only on the present?
  • “Where am I putting a period, where God only put a comma?” – Dr. Robert Smith Jr.
