jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Okay, so before we hit record, we were talking about herbs and

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

so before we could record, we.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

easy Are to preserve

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

and

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

useful they

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

how easy they're to preserve Preservation.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

out there may not know that Anna is

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Those of you out there may not know that Anna is also a master gardener.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

I was raised with

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

I'm a novice gardener. I was raised with a family garden, but

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

big garden myself,

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

I've never had

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

learning from Anna.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

a very big garden myself, so I'm learning and learning from Anna.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

use

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Anna that the way that I use herbs

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

At least

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

on the regular as.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

use herbs in my baking, which seems so strange. Or

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

herbs in my thinking, which seems so strange, or Anna said she that was a little bit unusual maybe. And I guess you guys

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

but,

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

let us know this is how you use herbs or not. But I'm a big fan of my bread machine. I love.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

so helpful in helping me

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

I think they're so helpful in helping me make more homemade bake things,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

once a week I

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

very often, probably once a week

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

in the bread

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

I will use all,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

let it

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

the ingredients,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

I'll go out

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

I'll

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

with one pair of

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

let it get started mixing all, go out with one pair,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

And like

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Rosemary,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

are going crazy, so

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

and

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

walk back in, give them a rinse, and then just stand over the

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Just

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

machine

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

walk back in, give them a rinse, and then just stand over the bread machine while it's mixing

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

of

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

and just snip off

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

herb,

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

little itty bitty snips

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

then

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

of those herbs

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

into

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

whatever, herbs, whatever it was. I just grabbed right that

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

so

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

into the dough and it just makes the bread dough

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

I end up

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

so flavorful.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

making

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

It makes it so that whatever I end up putting on it.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

pizzas,

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

I'm making like aone or like I'll make pizza like two pieces for my family. Or

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

I did this a lot

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

sometimes I do bread and twist.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

we were gonna

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

If we're going, I did this a lot during like football, we watch,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

just, it would just be the

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

make,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

basically.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

And then.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

makes it so flavorful. It just really makes it

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

so flavorful. It just really makes it

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

super easy.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

a lot better and

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

I don't know if everyone

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

super easy.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

putting their Sauce, like

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

I dunno if everyone else has just put their herbs in the, and I have never done that. I don't know. I guess when I was doing sourdough I would do what's called inclusions and I would add things like nuts or seeds or whatever. And sometimes I would do rosemary, but like I never think about putting it in my pizza dough. And that's so smart, especially fresh herbs because it imparts so much great flavor.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

I honestly was surprised. I was like, dang, that made that a lot better. And it's better than, or more

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

A lot better than, or more flavorful than

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

It's more

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

if I,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

than.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

before they.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

it's good in the sauce. The sauce is good, but the sauce

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Good in the sauce. The sauce is good,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

The

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

but the sauce is not all throughout. The tomato sauce is just on the surface. Yeah. So I feel like in terms of just making the whole

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

the

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

of the bread

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

is very

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

better, the herb inclusion is very good.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Just something I think

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

so

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

could add to their

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

just something I think that our listeners could add to their list of things. To maybe test out or try out.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

I Like you could

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

do you wanna start by talking about growing herbs? I just feel like we could add a lot of

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

how easy herbs can

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

wisdom to our listeners for

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

in

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

just how easy herbs can be in a pot. They can be in

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

the very first

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

the little

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

grow.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

in your garden. They can be the very first thing you ever Sure. And I do have to make a disclaimer that I, even though I did do the Master Gardener course, I am still learning every single year how to grow better. And one of the things that. I love growing. As far as herbs go are the ones that are perennials. That means they come back year after year. You don't really have to babysit them. They're pretty unfussy and I'll talk about some of my favorite varieties, but there, there is a difference in herbs between they're growing conditions what they like. That could be. Lavender, loving that Mediterranean hot, dry summer versus maybe some of your tender crops like basil. Basil for me is notoriously finicky. I live here in the Intermountain West, which means it's a high desert. And if I am not watering my basal quite a bit, it turns dry and not as tender. So really look at the back of that tag when you're purchasing herbs and figure out what the growing conditions are needed for herbs. Most herbs do drained soil though, so keep that in mind. Don't plant them in a clay rich soil. I actually recommend people either have garden boxes or, grow bags or pots for their herbs just because the drainage is so good in a pot.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Yeah it's

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

That's some of the growing conditions. Yeah. What do you like to grow? Jenny? Jenny is in Northern California.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

So it's, think of it more

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

so it's, think of it more

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

not California, like the beach, but California more like

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

not California, like the beach, but California more like

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

to eastern

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Eastern or Eastern Oregon climate. But

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

not by a lot.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

so I probably need a little bit more rain than Canada, but not.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

bed that I have, and the bed is shallow, it's, it is, I bet eight inches deep, not deep at all. I have

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

I at eight inches deep. Not deep at all. I have

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

chives. They're next door to each

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

loving chives. They're next door to each other and with

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

all are doing

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

gangbusters gr together

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

potting

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

because they love that

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

That's an

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

good draining potty.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

but the soil I have here. I'm in mining country, so

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

soil I have here.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

are

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

I'm in mining country, so a lot of our soils are really poor

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

a good way to

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

after the dredging process has gone through and there's not a good way to remedy that.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

beds are go-to

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Oh, interesting.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Yeah, it's a

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

are for my area. Yeah. It's a bummer.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

even Is pretty small, they

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

it's just super successful even though the.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Wasn't sure how much deer pressure I would have with

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Wasn't sure how much deer pressure I would have with no fence.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

doing

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

We do have a new dog, a young dog who's

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

planted

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

doing her job in terms of keeping the away, but

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

that I thought the deer

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

I planted the Chis in among the other things I thought the deer would like.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

And I actually have some

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

So as to. De

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

and among all

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

and I actually have some strawberries just

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

and that's

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

great in and among all that, which doesn't really go thematically and that's

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

together and I also

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

but

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

some pretty

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

all those are doing great together. And I also planted a pretty, very pretty

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

It

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

sage.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

nice,

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Oh, nice. It looks very nice. Smells nice.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

actually.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Right next to my chicken run actually.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

is it A whole lot of pests?

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Is it really gonna turn, deter. Pet, maybe not, but it's certainly not gonna hurt Notoriously don't like

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

those

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

those,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

they They supposedly

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

many herbs and those specifics, they don't, basically

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

successful for

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

don't. Yeah. So far that has just been super successful.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

herbs. I feel like when we talk

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Tell us more about the tender herbs. I feel like when we talk about tender herbs, I think of in every grocery store in America right now, you can buy a little, little tiny pot with a super

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

those are

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

tall base lemon. Yes.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

It's like you're

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Are Destin,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

and you're gonna snip up those leaves and then you're never

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

it's like you're gonna go home and you're gonna snip off those leaves I know. The, not only are the leaves perfect for photosynthesis, but once you start snipping off a ton of those, and unless they're in like direct sun and they're getting decent nutrient from the soil, they. They just don't stand a chance. But I have seen people re-pot those grocery store basil plants and in new potting soil they can get pretty happy. And as long as you're not too brutal. I with your pruning, they can last for a long time and they can even branch off as you start cutting away at it. But I would recommend that you cut it right. Above like a set of leaf nodes. Don't cut when there's just nothing left on that stem because it won't grow back. It does need some leaves for some photosynthesis if you plan on keeping it in your kitchen and growing it for a while.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Basal

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

needs.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

water than the more Mediterranean the rosemary, the time. The chives, those

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

The rosemary, the

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

water.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Rose,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

are

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

the chime, those need a lot less water. They're very happy when you do water them, but they're pretty

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

mint

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Whereas basil

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

I've

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

is like mint levels of water.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

much water, twice as

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Yeah.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

It's a little bit harder.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

I am growing some new to me herbs this year, including. Lemon Verina, which I cannot recommend enough for your peach jam. Throw some lemon verina chopped leaves in there and you will die. It tastes so good.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Ah.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

And then I'm also growing some Fenig Greek, some lemon basil, obviously regular basil. I started from seed and some. Lavender. So those are the new herbs that I'm growing this year and I'm interested to see how it will do

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

That all sounds so amazing. I

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

that all sounds so amazing.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Feel like dill is fun. I

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

grow,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

are always so

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

I feel

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

by dill.'cause it's

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

are

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

looking and

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

just be aware that

with other herbs and

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

I feel like the, like basil gets lumped in with other herbs and it just, it like a much wetter situation. It's a little bit

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

other ones. I feel

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

not finicky, a little trickier. Some Of the other

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

have to work

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Rosemary is,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

plant. They are very

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

You

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

feel like.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

have to work hard to sell a rosemary. They are very hardy, I feel like. Bases

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

but

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

that way.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

beyond Them, let's talk about how to preserve them because

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

beyond planting them, let's talk about how to preserve them because they could be rock stars

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

a

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

in your kitchen and so much more. Tell us why a person

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Anna.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

go. There's one really main reason for me, and that is that the grocery store herbs that you are getting are probably, they can be up to four years old. And the longer that a dried herb sits, the loss in aromatic smell and flavor happens. And so for me, drying herbs at home allows me to have. Very fresh tasting herbs. And for me, that's just key. If you love food you wanna get it when it's either at peak harvest or in the best way of preserving. There's a few different ways we can preserve herbs. Jenny, what is your favorite way I think that,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

ways freezing I feel like

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

there's so many ways. Freezing I feel like is just,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

to can everything

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

since we're in the crowd of canning, everybody wants to can everything.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

might be If

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

and I think that

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

because

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

might be the pointing, if that's

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

a

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

your philosophy because

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

is such a

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

dehydrating is such a.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

some herbs are best frozen, and

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Somes

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

specifically

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

are best

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

and

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

frozen, and those

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

you

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

specifically would be basal and

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

for

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

d.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

seconds before

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

blanch them in boiling water for 45 seconds. The order padding them dry and then

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

mix

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

freezing them.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

or

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

You also can mix them with oil or butter or other condiments like a pesto.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

of carrot

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

I

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

and

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

made pesto.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

cal. This is probably the most California thing I've ever said. Carrot tops, pumpkin seeds,

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Pumpkin seed,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

and basil, the

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

good farm.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

And that jar, I made several

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

pesto.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

jars of

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

that jar.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Fridge, and it lasted.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

colors of it, and kept it in the back of my fridge and it left.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

so

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

it took me two years

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

flavorful,

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

eat, but it was Wow. So good,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

if you just keep it good and

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

so flavorful, so delicious.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

when

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

If you just keep it cold

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

it's gonna

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

and use a clean UIL when you spoon outta it. A very long time and it was, it taste

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

didn't

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

so fresh, that was what was,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

from the

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

that it didn't taste

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

12th.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

any different from the first month to the 12th.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

good to know

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Very good.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

you

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

So it's good to know which herbs you want and which you want.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

about the dehydrated ana.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

All right. The dehydrator is one of my favorite tools. I actually am drying some herbs right now. I have lage we didn't really talk about this yet, but Lage is an amazing perennial herb that a friend gave me. A start from probably, ooh, I wanna say six years ago. And each year I watch it come up and I just don't really do anything with it. And I thought, you know what? This is ridiculous. So I decided to cut some of the stems, and it's very similar looking to celery and parsley, so it almost looks like a cross between the two. And the flavor is very similar to a spicy celery. Parsley. And I don't mean spicy like hot, spicy like arugula is spicy

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Yeah.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

and it's just. Fantastic. So I'm drying it. I'm going to chop it a little bit in my food processor and then you can add it to soups and stews. It's very popular in England, Eastern Europe. I was looking at recipes and there were some from Romania and Bulgaria and Germany. And the great thing about Lovet is that I have never watered that plant, and it's already three feet tall. Never, I've never watered that thing. And we get really hot summers dry

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

anything.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

black.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

like a trusty barn. Cat doesn't need you for anything.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Exactly. And it's probably thanks for pruning me. That's really great. Yeah, I'm dehydrating that right now.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Amazing. I've never even, I've never even thought of growing that. That's

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Amazing. I've never even, I've never even thought of growing up. That's amazing.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

listeners,

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

clearly need to add that.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

if

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Do you know what we didn't say for our listeners?

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

What's the

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

if you are wondering quietly yourself, wait,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

buy

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

what's the difference between the annual and

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

once and

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

perennials? You buy once

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

and

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

or plant them once and then they just.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Something that will live one season, they'll be

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

It's something that will live

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

And

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

they'll and then that's

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

just a decision I guess you make based on what Needs are

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

it's just a decision I guess, you make based on what you're growing needs are or what you wanna do. I personally Am

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

want,

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

to Peral

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

plant

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

in terms of just I

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

work

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

only want easy

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

ever

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

I don't want do this much work

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

then

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Ever again.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

it comes back bigger and

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

I just,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

year.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

yeah. How it back bigger and better every year.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

of The

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

but some people love

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

I know my Like really

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

of

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

like, oh, it's

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

gonna the theme store in spring. I know my grandma,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

her. She would get her flowers for the year that she

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

I go to the store and get

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

in her

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

her flowers for the year

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Some people love that and it's sweet and it's

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

people.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

If that's what you wanna do it. But just know

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Great. And that's what you wanna do it. But just know that for every dollar and every hour, it's either

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

come back. You don't have to do that again. And

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

perennial and perennial back. You don't have to do that again.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

like

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

also means that wherever you plant that

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

where it's

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

think

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

you,

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

you're probably not gonna move in. This is where it's gonna live. Just some of them aren't easy to transplant.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

space.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Come back in that

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

This

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

space.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

live?

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

You wanna think through is this where it's gonna live?

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

the

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Pretty home. It's like the home you buy, not the home you rent,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

just keep

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

right?

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

So

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Yeah.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

tell us more.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

herbs are very tender and you wanna try and keep as much of those aromatic properties as possible. So you're gonna dehydrate this at 95 degrees Fahrenheit. I do it low and slow and it probably takes, I'm gonna check it at like 12 hours just to see What it's feeling like. Dehydrated herbs are going to crumble under your touch when they're ready. You don't want any moisture content really at all when you're dehydrating. So make sure that those, those leaves or stems or whatever you're dehydrating are crumbling under your touch. That's really important. And then you're gonna store in airtight containers on a cool, dry place away from sunlight. And you can crush or grind them before you use them, or you can leave them whole.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

I have a good friend down the road who gave as a

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

I have a.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

A mason jar with dried mint and dried chamomile mixed together as such a nice tea mix

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Together.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

for the wintertime,

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Such a nice,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

and I couldn't

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

oh, that's lovely.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

how much better all

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

I couldn't believe

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

know what

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

how much better all that smell than, like I know what teabag but

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

It

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

there are not fresh. Not even close. Sure.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

It was just, it

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

So good. And you didn't have to use very much. It was just, it was really sweet. It was

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

chamomile,

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

very effective

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

not difficult

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

to drive. So like mint, amo mill, that's not exotic. That's not difficult to grow. Those are pretty easy things to,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

really nice

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

yeah. To grow and expensive. And it

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

the wintertime

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

was really nice because you Yeah, absolutely. And one thing I would say as a seed saver is that I like my annuals to go to seed in the fall. And then when they go to seed, you can actually either harvest those seeds or just sprinkle'em back in the ground. And in the spring they will come up and you just repeat that cycle over and it just keeps coming up. I don't know if you've ever planted dill, but dill is a very, I don't wanna say promiscuous seed. Seedy plant, but I find what, it's so fertile. If you have a dill going to seed in your garden, you're gonna get dill coming back up the next spring because it's so prolific

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

It's spreading

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

it

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

hither, and yawn. Have you ever heard any person say that? I've heard people

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

you.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

and it makes me laugh every time I've heard it, but Dill is spreading its seed, hither, and yawn.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

The other thing I would love to share with our listeners is that it's a perfect time to dehydrate your chives, your green onions, your garlic scapes for me. In one of my garden beds, I forgot about some garlic that didn't get separated out. So this spring there's just a bunch of garlic shoots coming up and I'm gonna take those cut the tops off and dehydrate those. And then I'll make a powder with fresh garlic and onion tops and green chives and things like that. And I think that's a really great way to. I don't know, have your own special blend of herbs and spices that came straight from you. I absolutely love that story of your friend that gave you a very personalized gift of mint and chamomile.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

It was super sweet and it was actually very bittersweet because

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

It was. It was

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

was,

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

actually

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

she was moving, it was kinda a long

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

bitter.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

she was like, I'm gonna, I'm leaving. Here's my parting gift. And I was like, man, I should be giving you the parting gift. But it was just very sweet and. That wasn't

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

But it was just very sweet

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

super difficult,

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

that wasn't a ton of work. It wasn't super difficult,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

very

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

but it was very good very easy to enjoy. Enjoy in the wintertime.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

I also think having herbs available makes you a

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Herb

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

It makes your

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

makes you a better cook.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

and

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Better cook.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

you have them

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

And as

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

dry

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

you have them

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

to

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

and you

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Which I

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

use them,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

very

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

which

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

preservation

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

it's just like a very simple preservation step that we might like, not think of or not

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

you're probably excited

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

necessarily be, like, if you're tuning into this podcast, you're probably excited to learn about can,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

freeze dry. Ready

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

pressure canning or. You're like

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

skip,

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

ready for step

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

sleep on the

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

2.0, but

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

super, super

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

don't sleep on the dehydration because it can be super, super valuable and easy.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Anna, how many

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

And

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

it running

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

yeah. We'll see, but I usually check it after 12 hours.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Yeah, see, so like in the 11 to

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Yeah, so like

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

you can

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

anytime in the 11 to 14 hour range you can check on it.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

so an herb Have preserved

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

so an herb that I have

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

success

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

preserved

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

are hops.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

with great success,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

are a vine. That is,

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

oh.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

the

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Are a vine. That

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

in

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

is the plants hop,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

strong

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

are used in beard. They actually have a very strong preservative quality.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Stands for

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

you are a person who likes I-P-A-I-P-A stands for

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

has a lot of

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

d and

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

it because it was preserved

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

has a lot of pop added to it because it was preserved from Western Europe for the long journey.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

lot of hot flavor.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

So they

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

what that

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

just have a lot of pot flavor. That's that's what that herb is

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

of

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

probably most famous for. Yeah.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

which

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Also, I believe a coconut

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

mentioned because it

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

plant,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

very

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

which only I mentioned has, it has a very gentle sedative, like sleepy times

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

bitter,

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

quality. Oh,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

can dehydrate

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

very

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

They

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

bitter,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

a little pine

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

but

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

You've

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

you can dehydrate those. They look like a little fine.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

You could just look at an

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

A label of any IPA

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

but they're small.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

look at an illustration, right? They look like a leafy greenstone, but they're small.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

it's

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

can dehydrate those

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

yellow

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

easily, and it's the

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

pollen, but

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

yellow kind,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

yellow substance up at the

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

actually

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

pine cone

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

yellow.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

but that gets very dry and

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Pine C leaf,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

dried.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

that gets very dry and they're very pretty dry,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

a super

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

very aromatic. And that is actually a super simple

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

when you grow

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

super simple dehydration herb. And when you grow them, their vines are very raspy, like a raspberry.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

climb

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

If you needed something to climb a wall or climb a,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

or

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

sort of trellis or something, but you didn't wanna attract

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

or

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

or produce like

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

they're really a

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

lawn.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

that

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Tractor bear, they're

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

see a whole

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

really a neat line

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

as

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

you don't necessarily And what do you do? You dehydrate it for the purpose of beer making or like, why would you dehydrate it?

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

So if I were just a person, just not necessarily a

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

So if I were just a person, just not necessarily a home brewer,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

a tea,

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

would dehydrate a small amount for adding to a tea. Like one little of those. He with

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

a Would

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

let's say chamomile tea

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

sleepy

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

and a sugar cube would be a very good sleepy time herbal blend.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

but

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

You don't wanna do too much because it is a fairly.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

sleepy

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

it does have a

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

feel

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

distinct

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

It's

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

sleepy time

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

get ready for

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

meal to it.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

And I'm sure there's some that, I'm sure there's cooking applications that I

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Cooking applications.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

but

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

I'm sure there's cooking.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

I just happened to know about hops. My parents owned a brewery when I was very

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Just happened to know about

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Happened to

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

when I was

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

at my home when I was a kid and.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Oh, interesting.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Yeah.

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

When I was a kid and,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

they are a very

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

yeah. Yeah. But they are a very useful plant in the fact that they don't produce like a fruit. That's

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

But they're have big, broad

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

something.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

They're easy climbers, they're neat. So that's just a possibility

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

their needs. So that's What else can you use instead of dehydrator?

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

yeah. So if you don't have a You can

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

oh yeah.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

a

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

So if you don't have a dehydrator,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

at the

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

can use a cookie sheet in your oven at the lowest temperature setting that for most ovens, less

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

prop

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

200 degrees or less.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

To

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

You also can prop open the door of your oven to get a little bit cooler, like with a wood spoon.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Hawks. You

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

You can air dry herbs

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

like you

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

you can,

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Chili's

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

on a needle and thread like you would either chilies or

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

You can dry it

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

popcorn if you were stringing it for Christmas tree. You can dry it like that. You can air dry bundles of leafy herbs, probably the more drier

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

well

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

if they like a dry habitat. Those tend to dry well in the

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

I think Rosemary Dry like

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

Sage is good like that. I think rosemary, they to dry like that.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

on a

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

If you've never grown rosemary, it grows on a woody stem, which is

upside

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

so handy or To hang upside down.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

herbs do you dry? Just hanging upside

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

what other herbs do you dry? Oh. I've done lavender. I've done, like you said, sage, I've done. Definitely flowers and chamomile yaro. I think that's about it. Pretty much anything that I have an abundance of and I don't have space in my dehydrator, I just bundle and then hang, and it takes, two to three weeks usually for everything to get really crispy and dry.

jenny-gomes_1_05-29-2025_092614:

Ugh. So many easy ways to dehydrate herbs, guys easy

_1_05-29-2025_102613:

many easy ways to dehydrate or
