Welcome to the Messy Hairstylist Podcast.
Speaker 2:I'm Kelsey Morris and I'm Abbey Warther. Whether you are a mess, literally or figuratively, we are here to help you take imperfect action to find your success as a hairstylist.
Speaker 1:There is this guy on Instagram and we have to link it because it will make this make more sense, but we put it in our salon group chat and I like cried watching this reel. It was so funny and basically he goes through and shows different color bowls and says what each color bowl says is you about you as a stylist? I almost died when he got to a bowl that I use. I was like, oh my gosh, I feel personally attacked because it was so freaking funny. So I thought it'd be funny to recap on here and we'll give him props too, because I think like he will blow him wide open.
Speaker 2:He's so funny. He does that with a lot of different things, like the combs that you use and all of that in the clips it's at Do my Hair Drew so, but and all of that in the clips, um, it's at do my hair drew so, but we'll link it in the show notes. Yeah, I love that it's so funny.
Speaker 1:So I want to know, like I want to know what color wool describes you and I would love to like get some feedback from other people on this one and how they related to it and if they felt personally attacked or personally seen or what, because it's so funny. So the first one that he did brought up and the first one he talked about was the standard color track bowl. Do you know what I'm talking about? It's black. It's like you probably got it in hair school and your kit and it has like the handle on it. It's not the color, it's the Diane bowl the Diane, yes, okay, it's not the color, it's the Diane bowl, the Diane.
Speaker 2:Yes, okay, it's black and it has the little spout on it. Yes, If you were to pour your color out, which I don't I never understand the spouts on the color bowls.
Speaker 1:I was trying to figure that out when I was watching this video. I'm like why does it have a spout?
Speaker 2:I don't know. I feel like maybe, like sometimes, some old school stylists would just like pour the entire toner on, but they didn't even tone back then. So I don't know.
Speaker 1:Okay, well, me either, but you kind of hit the nail on the head on that one.
Speaker 2:So basically what?
Speaker 1:that color says about you is you're probably a seasoned hairdresser.
Speaker 2:Yes, yeah, okay, go ahead. Yeah, and he said. He said it's um and you've probably just given up all um hope on aesthetic, like aesthetically pleasing things.
Speaker 1:Right, yeah, this is the bowl. We're here, we're going to get it. It's got a handle so I can hold a couple of bowls at a different time. Okay, so I'm not going to lie, I don't use that bowl, but I use one very similar to that.
Speaker 2:You have some of these in the salon. We do some. I love it. Where did they come from?
Speaker 1:I have no idea, I don't know. They stack nicely you know I like that. You know you don't have a lot of space so they stack nicely. But so I think what that one says about you is yeah, you're probably a more seasoned hairdresser. You like things that just make sense, like stackable bowls. You probably have had the same functional functional. He said one thing that this is where I felt personally attacked. He said you probably have one comb that you foil with that's missing half the teeth.
Speaker 2:Yeah, you call it your lucky comb.
Speaker 1:I have that, yes, literally, and it's orange and it's got stained with color and it's so perfect, but it works my hand right.
Speaker 1:I like the feeling of it on my finger and it it really, it really foils well. So, yeah, I understand that. Yes, yes, so I love that. I think that was hilarious. Okay, the next one that he brought up hold on, let me pull my notes here. So I love that. I think that was hilarious. Okay, the next one that he brought up hold on, let me pull up my notes here, which I thought was hilarious.
Speaker 2:It was the color track bowl.
Speaker 1:The flat back color track clear bowls.
Speaker 2:So, like, do you know the ones I'm talking about? I had never. Like I'm looking at this right now, so everyone's going to have to watch this reel that we put down below, but I've never used this one and I've never used this one, and I don't know if I've ever even seen this one before. He's showing like a pink clear one.
Speaker 1:Yeah, they're like pink and clear. They're very like I don't use a lot of color track brand stuff Me, I don't either, I don't either, but these ones I think they're like supposed to be like environmentally sound Like they're like, very like, I don't know. Basically, you know the way that he was describing it and this is what I see like a very organic hairdresser who's like you know, they probably recycle their foils and you know they circle salon for sure yeah correct?
Speaker 2:yeah, although he did say that these are the people who um don't charge for toners, but they should.
Speaker 1:Yes, yes, totally, that's such a good one. Yeah, that one made me laugh because I was like I don't know that bull very well, so that one's harder for me to like touch on. So if anyone uses the flat back, color track, clear bowls please let us know. Please let us know and describe your personality as a hairdresser. Yes, because I feel like you're very neat and organized.
Speaker 2:I feel like I've never worked with anybody that works with those bowls, so I don't know that personality. Yeah, honestly, it's not us.
Speaker 1:No, we are not those no, um, okay so are you a next one? Are you a ceramic bowl user?
Speaker 2:I'm not. Do you know?
Speaker 1:yeah, I'm, I'm gonna go with more of like the diane bowl. I'm a classic og okay okay, but the ceramic bowls are the ones that are like, very like. They're like nice bowls. You went to HomeGoods and you bought like very aesthetic, like you have branded.
Speaker 2:You have a branded photo shoot 100% every time.
Speaker 1:Yeah, your salon is like meticulously branded. It's all got the same theme and vibe. Your color bowls, like I mean, I feel like the lightener you put in your color bowl if it's blue tinted, your, your, your bowl is going to have a touch of blue on it, like it is very meticulous.
Speaker 2:Yes, and he said you're the type of person that says art takes time, perfection takes time.
Speaker 1:Yes, you spend four hours on a color because it's going to be, because you're going to film it, start to finish. Yeah, we're going to make the most beautiful content You're going to. You know like it is meticulously done, takes a lot of time and, yes, if you own this, these bowls, you create content, you create content.
Speaker 2:it's like a major focus for you. I mean, I create content, but I don't use these bowls right but like that is yeah, I think they're past our age range I do too, I think they were after us, like when people start buying those bowls.
Speaker 1:Yes, and I feel like they're very probably type a. I think this person is like. This stylist is very type a, like I like stuff like this. Their, their, their station, like where they set their stuff, is probably very organized.
Speaker 2:I agree. Yeah, you know, that's but and they've, and they've done a lot of work on branding and this, they do the photo shoot, they have the outfits, they the way. Yes, they are I wish I was that person?
Speaker 1:Yeah, they probably tell their guests to come in with like full makeup so they can like take pictures.
Speaker 2:Yeah, they're the people that send the thing to new clients and say you have to wear black or neutral or white.
Speaker 1:Right.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and wear makeup because you're going to be filmed. And wear makeup and you're going to be filmed and sign this waiver.
Speaker 1:Please sign it. Yes, and they do extensions.
Speaker 2:They do extensions, they do oh, yes, yes, yes. And when it was really in, they wore the big wide brim hats.
Speaker 1:Oh my gosh, they a hundred percent wore the wide brim hats, yes, yes. Now, this is not saying that anyone who ever has worn had one of these bowls, or that anyone who's worn a hat had to do either one, but I bet there is a stylist out there.
Speaker 2:We are being very we are stereotyping right now based on your color. I love it.
Speaker 1:I just wish that someone would have a picture of themselves in a wide brim hat with the ceramic bowl and send it to us, I'm sure those exist.
Speaker 1:If that exists. If you were that stylist and you could do this for me. Please send it to me. If you send it to me, I will post it and I will send you a $5 Starbucks gift card immediately. Dead, serious, I want to see this person. There's got to be out there. Okay, all right, so our last color bowl is the. This one had me dying, yeah, okay.
Speaker 2:This is the Fromar click and lock bowls, the octagon Okay, so you have to get this mental image.
Speaker 1:Okay, they're like all different colors, right yeah. We have to get this mental image okay, yeah, all different colored, right yeah. And then they all click together so you can have like six bowls, okay. And what I picture a lot of these people doing are like the fashion colors, like if you do like vivids, like you have like six different colors in there. They're like a rainbow, yeah, and you know, and those click and lock bowls you can, I mean sounds like it'd be pretty nice to carry them back to your station I guess yeah, do you?
Speaker 2:No, no, I got years and years ago, Fraymar sent me a PR package with, like in his video, these exact bowls and I just don't, I don't like. I'm sorry, I shouldn't say anything bad I don't, I don't. I love Fraymar, but I don't like these bowls. I don't like the colors. Yeah, they're too bold for me. They're too.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, yeah. And the other thing that stresses me out about these bowls is, like the over, like what? If? Like? So I'm a mess. I'm messy, which it feels like a lot of people who would use the click and lock bowls might be messy hairdressers too, just especially if they're vivid.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yes, vivid stylists are not like. The hair is clean, how they apply it, because you have to be, but everything else is a mess yes and so.
Speaker 1:But what, if, you like, accidentally dump some of one color into the other one, because the bowls are attached to each other I feel like that would happen and then you're totally screwed.
Speaker 1:It's a disaster, right? So these hairdressers are definitely like we said. They are probably don't have the cleanest, most organized station, but their bowls are locked together. They are doing fun wild. Their salon probably is fun. I picture my friend Kayla Shout out to Kayla. She lives out in Rhode Island area. Kayla, valeria, how are you my friend? But her salon is called House of Color and it is like an old 90s style. Ooh, I love that. They have bright colors, neon signs, like I guarantee she uses these bowls.
Speaker 2:So, yes, well, also the people that I think that use these bowls are also the people that have like the color tray systems, Like, if you see in those color tray systems where it's like this magnetic color tray and then, there's all these different like things you can put on the sides of the color trays that will hold everything you've ever imagined, anything that you need in your life to do hair.
Speaker 1:um, and they're massive, but they're, and they look nice, but they're expensive and they'll probably become like a little bit of a hoarder on their tray, oh my, god, could you imagine?
Speaker 2:I feel like there's. I do feel like I don't think I'm making this up, but I do feel like there is a legit holder for a stanley cup on it. I do, I think so. Yes, they have everything. Oh my God.
Speaker 1:That's what that's. What I picture, though, is like the person who has all of these bowls locked together they have, like a station of hoarding, like there's just so much of whatever they could very creative. Whatever they could possibly need. They have it at their fingertips, it's ready to go and, like they are going to use it, because they probably use a lot of really cool techniques, do a lot of like different types of hair, make some really neat. You know, neat looks but, um, yeah, it's very like particular, very like a not particular.
Speaker 2:It's like so you're the stylist that uses the, the diane bowl, the first?
Speaker 1:yeah, so I have to sit. I have to say, without a shadow of a doubt, I am the first bowl. Now I don't necessarily use just the diane bowls. I do have a couple of those because I like the handle and I look, because I carry sometimes three color bowls at a time and so the handle I can hold over all of them. But uh, just the way that that person is described like the, the seasoned hairdresser, I love the way we made that up they were all black, so they can cover up.
Speaker 2:Yeah, from 2013 is what he said, so they can cover up the bleach stains from 2013. I'm like god.
Speaker 1:That's so true, it's so true, they're just messy. Like, yeah, you can walk back in the back room and I'll have three of my Diane color bowls that still have color and I'm just sitting there just waiting for you to rinse them out, because I might.
Speaker 2:You know what, if I still needed that, I know, you know you do, I know, do a little browse, a little color of the brows or something.
Speaker 1:Exactly.
Speaker 2:Shampoo bowl I know I am a mixture of the Diane bowl. I totally have some of those, and then whatever like my color lines have given me. So I have a Paul Mitchell color bowls from when I had Paul Mitchell color so many years ago. And then I have Kevin Murphy color bowls. So I'm a little bit old school and just like, oh, it's free, cheap. But I love the Kevin Murphy color bowls. Bowls because they do look nice. There's no handle, they're just this perfect circular, round black bowl. Oh, that's cute, they are pretty. I do like those. So that's what I put. It's interesting, that's what I put my hair color in. And then, but then also for highlights, I use the stainless steel sunlight spool.
Speaker 1:Right, right. Because those are a little more upscale looking too. I do too. Yeah, any of that. My straight color goes in my or my, um Davines, I use Davines, and so we have their cute little. They're like square, like you just described perfectly square bowls, square one, though, yeah, they don't have a handle. Um, they're cute. I actually like. I have found that I like the square bowls better than the round ones.
Speaker 2:Hear me out, because I would like that your brush is yeah, I can and so I have a heart like.
Speaker 1:I like to like pull the color to the one side of the square and I'm able to get it out where, if it's round, I'm like how do you do?
Speaker 2:that, yeah, yeah, I mean. I mean I won't even go down the rabbit hole of how I scoop color out of my bowl Cause that's so boring, but the fact that we all have a system of how we scoop color out of our pool, we do, oh my gosh, that is so fun. He, yeah, we'll. I'll look at the our show notes. You'll see um do my hair drew, because he does a few other ones, like what your comb says about you as a hairstylist and he, he has it everyone down pat. It is so good. But our tools do say something about us, we there's. There are reasons why we choose certain tools and it. They all have their own vibe.
Speaker 1:So I think it's fun If we can't laugh at ourselves, then what you know, yeah, yeah, and no one feel personally attacked, but if any of you are this stereotype stylist and you send me a DM, I will repost it and send you a gift card because I think it'd be hilarious. I would love to get a collaboration of our stereotypes.
Speaker 2:I know I would love that we can tag Drew or Do my Hair Drew so he can see his reel taken off.
Speaker 1:Yeah, thanks for the good content, drew. You're the best. We loved it. Bye.
