Our conversation takes compelling turns through films like Menace II Society, Belly, and Paid in Full, which earned our respect for their unflinching portrayals of street economics and their consequences. We give special attention to Latino cinema, highlighting Sin Nombre and Sicario for bringing authentic perspectives on immigration and cartel violence. The deeply moving Mi Familia receives particular praise for its multigenerational storytelling about Mexican-American experiences.

Episode Introduction

Speaker 1

what , what , what is up ? My people welcome back to another episode of small talk with compa . I am here with my compadre , william . How you doing , brother man , over there ?

Speaker 2

doing good , doing good , excited for episode seven , how you know , getting ready to get started .

Speaker 1

All right , so we had a little minor setback , nothing crazy , so we're just going to keep going . Keep the flow going . What is this episode about ? What are we doing ? But before we get to that , tell me how you're doing , how you been .

Speaker 2

I've been good , you know just .

Speaker 1

How's the family ?

Speaker 2

Family's doing good . Beautiful . You know working . You know always thinking about things to improve within the podcast and excited to be here with you , man .

Speaker 1

I can't agree with you more . I think the podcast is going well . Yeah , of course I think we're learning , obviously a lot of steps , but all good . What are we doing today ? What are we talking about today ?

Speaker 2

Today , man , we're going to talk about hood and gangster movies . How about that ? You know it's part of the culture .

Speaker 1

Yeah .

Speaker 2

You know what I mean .

Speaker 1

All cultures , yeah .

Speaker 2

Music .

Speaker 1

Fashion , yep , what else ? Ambition , survival ?

Speaker 2

Survival , just culture , worldwide . You know , and you know , and obviously you know , with every episode we have like our own you know guide and how we want to do things . So we might zigzag into those questions and those themes .

Speaker 1

But yeah , we created an agenda . But you know , we like to like my compadre has said in the past , is just like to mix things up and just be transparent with the guys .

Speaker 2

Yeah , and now that we're on the topic , I mean , obviously the first movie that comes to my mind is Blood .

Speaker 1

In Blood Out . Yeah , you know , it's just , it's a good movie , it's a great movie , it's a Raza movie .

Speaker 2

Exactly , yeah , you know , it's just , it's a good movie , it's a great movie , it's a rasa movie . It's exactly , yeah , rasa movie , which you know probably , which me and you could relate , um , even though it was like , recorded on , you know , in california , and you know , obviously the generation is probably a little different , it's you know the culture is probably a little different , but it's the same concept you know , here in new york , um , and I , I love the fact that you know .

Speaker 2

blood in , blood out , it's just , it's just a classic , it's a brotherhood betrayal , gang life . It's . It's the life of three of three men , um , growing up in , uh , in the gang , in the gang life in the gang life in east los angeles . You know which ? I think they were cousins , you know , one became an artist , the other one became a cop and then , obviously , the third became a he just lived in jail , lived in jail man .

Speaker 1

Yeah , in and out of jail . A convict yeah the white boy . It was a sad movie Definitely woke me up Like never . I don't want to fucking end up like Miklo or fucking Cruzito , even though he got his shit together , yeah , but he still went through some fucking rough , rough patches . Yeah , I mean , they all did . Yeah , they all did , they all did .

Speaker 2

But I think that it was great to see the upcomings of those three men and where life took them .

Speaker 1

Yeah , how they all evolved .

Speaker 2

How they all evolved and then kind of synced them back .

Speaker 1

So yeah , it was good . Good movie , Strong movie . What do you give it ? What do you rate it ?

Speaker 2

Rate it from what

Blood In, Blood Out Discussion

Speaker 2

?

Speaker 1

One to ten , just one to five . One to five .

Speaker 2

I'd say five .

Speaker 1

Nice yeah , Generous guy you .

Speaker 2

No , because it just hits all , all cylinders .

Speaker 1

Yeah , you know , you're right , you know what I mean . You're right , you're absolutely right .

Speaker 2

It has Good times , bad times . You got the roller coasters Up and down . You know , you know , you think that you know Things are gonna be Cinderella story and then it kinda Quickly just changes To older .

Speaker 1

I think when , when Miklo got out of jail that first time . I thought , he was going to get his shit together .

Speaker 2

Yeah .

Speaker 1

Yeah , but he got too hooked on just the bad life .

Speaker 2

The criminal . Yeah , Crazy , it's the easy route . Yeah , you know . Same thing with like Crucito , you know , you think that you know all coming back to do his art , but the drugs man Just crazy .

Speaker 1

Let me ask you a question . You know , you remember that scene when Mik Miklos robbing the , the armored truck , you would have shot your cousin .

Speaker 2

Oh , you know what . You know what that ?

Speaker 1

would have been a good and caliente question .

Speaker 2

That would have been a good and caliente question .

Speaker 1

Anyway , go ahead , talk to me , I think I wouldn't , you wouldn't shoot your cousin . I don't think so either , man , I can't , I don't think I can go . I can't . I think I can go . I can live with myself knowing that I fucking shot a family member .

Speaker 2

Yeah , yeah , I would never be a cop .

Speaker 1

Yeah Well , yeah , but hypothetically .

Speaker 2

I just I wouldn't . I'm not disrespecting the cops . I think the NYPD blue and any cop here in the United States are . You know they rakes their lives . They rakes their lives every day for us and I appreciate and understand and you know I'm always , I'm always up , you know I'm always there , you know to like support . Well , it's a challenge .

Speaker 1

It's a challenge , you know yeah , but I mean no , no , I personally wouldn't .

Scarface and Classic Gangster Films

Speaker 1

Yeah , I wouldn't do it , I wouldn't shoot my cousin . Hell , no , I wouldn't .

Speaker 2

Scarface is on our list yeah , scarface , legendary movie , that's another one . Um , who doesn't like Scarface man ? An upcoming American dream I was going to ask you before you got here .

Speaker 1

I'm sure your kids have seen it , right ? Your kids have seen . I know your oldest probably saw it already . No , I don't think so .

Speaker 2

Really no , maybe he did my question was going to be .

Speaker 1

Well , it's going to be . You think this generation of youngsters have seen it .

Speaker 2

That's a good question .

Speaker 1

I wouldn't know man . I'm going to ask that . I think I'm sure my nephews .

Speaker 2

They definitely might have heard it . They might have heard of it , but I don't think .

Speaker 1

Well , you see Scarface T-shirts . The merch is everywhere .

Speaker 2

But there's kids out there that wear these merch . They don't even know what the hell they're wearing . You're right , that is absolutely correct . That's another thing , that's another topic . But but going back to scarface , um , I mean I don't know . It's a good question . You know something that I probably will ask my son you know the oldest , just because I don't know what his head is at around that area . But who knows man ?

Speaker 1

maybe they're hurting me , but I don't know . Maybe he has . You don't think he has . You don't think he has any , I don't think so and your daughter Nah Menos .

Speaker 2

I don't think they could relate . Oh , I don't know .

Speaker 1

Yeah .

Speaker 2

Maybe they do see it for the first time . Then it'll be like oh wow , you know Good movie , but I don't know , it's different times . Menos to society , ruthless , that's a good word , just that's a good word to describe it just not giving a fuck yeah , again recorded in what it wasn't in uh , compton , uh I believe , well , somewhere in la black urban society . Yeah , there , you know somewhere in la .

Speaker 1

Yeah , belly bellyy is a video , a two-hour video , a very good two-hour music video yeah , I guess .

Speaker 2

So who's your favorite actor there ?

Speaker 1

Sincere , the homie Nas . He was great . What's his name ? The homie from Blood In , blood Out wanted to get out out of the hood , and , and since he would try to get out of the hood as well and he did , though he ended up going to Africa . That's true , that's right , he did , he wanted to get out of everything that he they went through .

Speaker 2

Read a lot of books . Read a lot of books . According to the movie script yeah , what about Tommy ?

Speaker 1

Tommy Another one .

Speaker 2

That was that wow , bro , Just didn't give a fuck .

Speaker 1

Oh man he just didn't care about anything .

Speaker 2

But I like the fact . At the end you know when he was going to do what he was supposed to do . I'm not going to say the story because there's probably people out there that haven't seen the movie , but then the fact that know the the pastor , the priest yeah , yeah , was able to like , yeah , control the situation and make make him understand you know uh welcome up . That was uh , I was realized that shit was deep .

Speaker 1

That was deep , yeah . What do you give it ? One to five yeah , solid four , solid four , very generous today it's real good , you're right , I like it . Colors is a little bit too old it's . Uh yeah , you ever seen that I did ? Did you like it ? I did Sean Penn .

Speaker 2

Sean Penn . Sean Penn is great . You know where I like Sean Penn In that movie that he did With , um , with , oh , the guy from La Bamba , actually , what's his name ? Um , uh , isias Is . What's his name ? Isaias , isaias , I think his name is Blue Diamond . Phillips , the main Obama guy yeah , but the one movie that I like from him that always been in my mind was the movie Bad Boys . Yeah , it's about juvenile kidsile Kids that are locked up For doing bad shit , obviously .

Speaker 1

What's the name of it ?

Speaker 2

Bad Boys and Isaias Morales , the guy that played Bob In Bob . He was there too . They were young .

Speaker 1

Yeah , damn , sean Penn has been around for a long time . Watch that movie .

Speaker 2

I will , I probably you probably did see it , at least clips of it . And you see Cause he was . Sean Penn was really young , but it was a great movie . Great movie . You gotta watch that .

Speaker 1

What do you give colors ? Like a , like a . Three , I'm not gonna lie , I didn't like it .

Speaker 2

Two A two . I just I didn't relate to that . It dragged .

Speaker 1

Yeah , it was good , but it was dragged yeah but it was dragged . Yeah , you know , cops

Menace to Society and Belly

Speaker 1

control the gangs when they couldn't .

Speaker 2

Yeah .

Speaker 1

Back in the 80s . Yeah , new Jack City .

Speaker 2

Hmm , new Jack .

Speaker 1

City you like I like it ?

Speaker 2

New Jack City , no , nino Brown , no , no , you know what ? New York City , new Jack City , new Jack City it's not a bad movie of yours . Yeah , paid in full , one of my , one of my classics . You like that ? I love that movie . Tell me why I think that again . Three . It's a story of three men , three boys , you know , hustling in the streets of uh , harlem , yeah , um , and they both , they all have different stories , man and and that's what I could relate , the fact that you know , even though they are hustling and they are doing , you know , things that they're not supposed to , they got lives , you know , and it's in deep , it's betrayal , it's the gang life , it's the brotherhood .

Speaker 1

Drugs .

Speaker 2

Drugs , cars .

Speaker 1

Gold . All those guys did a great job . Yeah , yeah .

Speaker 2

Cameron Surprisingly a good actor . Surprisingly a good actor . Yeah , yeah , great , great .

Speaker 1

Was he in State Property ? Was he , I'm asking . I don't remember , I've never seen that . I've never seen that either .

Speaker 2

I think I saw one clip of it on TikTok and I'm like , but he played a good part of what Rico , yeah , yeah , he was good , that was good , he was a good one .

Speaker 1

Solid Five , solid Five , yeah , true Training Day .

Speaker 2

Whew , that's another dancer . Washington man Took it to another level , took it to a whole different level . Man , his , his acting , there was just On point .

Speaker 1

Yeah , you had said Prior to this recording that you like Paid in full , a little more Than training day . Yeah , I do , yeah .

Speaker 2

And it's not . They're close , but I think that for me , the fact that Changes Changes the whole Dynamic of Paid inool is that it's true events .

Speaker 1

Yeah .

Speaker 2

And I think they played it to the . You know , they played it good and I think with Training Day , yeah , that probably does happen . Yeah , but I think that will never tell us .

Speaker 1

A fucking cop going rogue like , especially in the narcotics department .

Speaker 2

We'll never find that out Like , especially in the narcotics department .

Speaker 1

We'll never find that out . We'll never find that out . It's true , American Gangster Ooh another sad , depressing story . Frank Lucas .

Speaker 2

Yeah .

Speaker 1

That's a very sad story . Yeah , really sad story , not really he lived his life , though Frank Lucas had a . Do you think you remember that scene where they went to the fight ? Uh-huh when he wore that fur , that hat , the chinchilla . Yeah , that was a big mistake . I would've worn that he shouldn't have done that though I know he shouldn't have but I would've worn it .

Speaker 2

Why ? Because it's just a bougie Just for the look .

Speaker 1

He did it for his wife , I know done that .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I fucked them over , got him caught . I got him caught , man , I see that's what I'm saying .

Speaker 1

You be in the spotlight , you're gonna get caught . It's crazy how that movie was like .

Speaker 2

Like you said , it's a real life movie yeah happened in harlem just selling heroin from fucking south asia what people don't know about frank lucas is that um he he was actually . He was actually um a soldier for um Kingpin in Harlem Very famous by the name of Bumpy Johnson .

Speaker 1

Yep .

Speaker 2

So Bumpy Johnson was really actually he was his right hand man , to be quite honest Taught him everything he knew . Yeah , taught him everything he knew . Man , like he was , like Frank Lucas was the real deal . Like Frank Lucas was . Like a killer , definitely . You know he . When Bumpy wanted someone to be eliminated guess who he called . He did the dirty work , he did the dirty work . So Frank Lucas was just a real , real gangster Like , and then for him to come and took over um Harlem .

Speaker 1

Damn , that's played it perfectly what is ?

Speaker 2

that 20 percent . You remember that one yeah yeah , that was amazing , and he shot him . He shot him right in the streets of harlem and everybody was just like what . He came back to the restaurant with his cousins and brothers . His cousin brothers are looking at him like what the hell , just happened .

Speaker 1

These guys just came down from , came off from the south wiped his freaking mouth and , just like yo , we're a family now , yeah , are we missing something ? I'm sure we're a family . Now , yeah , are we missing something ? I'm sure we're missing a bunch of them . What are we talking about ?

Speaker 2

What else I mean ? Yeah , so we talk about Mexican hood , gangster movies , right , so we got .

Speaker 1

Oh Si Nombre , oh yeah .

Speaker 2

That's the type of movie that we need to talk about . Very Watch it . We're not going to say all of what happened , because there's probably people out there that haven't seen

Training Day and American Gangster

Speaker 2

the movie , but it's just based on real life events .

Speaker 1

Yeah , it's based on a young woman from Honduras trying to get into the States .

Speaker 2

Yeah .

Speaker 1

She runs into some trouble with some gang members Mm-hmm and Sabathruchas and then they're into some trouble as well . The guy that she runs into is a gang member , and then they yeah , it goes down from there .

Speaker 2

I won't say too much , but that's a good movie . It's good , it's just depressing . Yeah , yeah , of course , but it's real , it's real , it's real and that's what I like about it , and it's shit what people really go through in life to get to the States . I think there , yeah , definitely a good movie . Decades , yeah , recommended , uh , what else ? Sicario I never watched it .

Speaker 1

It's good , yeah I give it a five . Why is it good ? Because cartels . Who doesn't like cartels ? People love watching cartel movies like the show narcos great show . Uh , benicio del toro is a great p that role that he played he was a good guy , maybe bad guy fucking strong yeah what was emily blunt , I think is the , the female that plays that role , tambien , she was fucking brilliant in that .

Speaker 1

Really , yeah , it's a . It's scary , scary world what people go through in the cartel world that I would never in my life want to get get involved with .

Speaker 2

Obviously it's a war that goes on and we don't even know it we ?

Speaker 1

yeah , I don't want to know it , but it's a good movie . Yeah , uh , I give it a five .

Speaker 2

Oh damn we're being generous . We are right you started .

Speaker 1

That's true , dead presidents . You said you liked Ooh yeah , dead Presidents .

Speaker 2

Again a film in Harlem , I believe . Oh , it was based in Harlem , I think right .

Speaker 1

Was it , was it I ?

Speaker 2

might be wrong . I might be wrong about this one , but I think I'm pretty sure it was .

Speaker 1

Why do you like it ?

Speaker 2

I don't know man , it's just again it goes back to those type of movies . Don't know man , it's just again it goes back to like those type of movies . You know you start , you're starting from humble beginnings and then , you know , the journey of life just takes you to a whole different direction , like , for instance , with that president . You know he is a kid that just didn't know what the hell you want to do with his life .

Speaker 1

He goes to the army and starts freaking , didn't like it , loses his mind to go to korea . Go to Korea right , to fight the Korean War . I think Vietnam , oh , vietnam , vietnam , yeah .

Speaker 2

And then he comes back freaking just like traumatized right Another man . Another man and it's just like you know , he becomes a killing machine and then that's how the whole life you know , and then I bet you , this is what happens to a lot of soldiers . They , they don't know what the hell they're doing in the city . Thank you all for your service . By the way , absolutely , man , for all those veterans out there In the Bronx .

Speaker 1

Oh , it's in the Bronx , it was taking place in the Bronx .

Speaker 2

I mean , yeah , I think that it's a great movie . That's why I like it , because it was just kind of like that raw and gritty and like just people .

Speaker 1

I feel like Durant's take . Who played the main ?

Speaker 2

role . That's a good actor . Chris Tucker was there , he was .

Speaker 1

He was the he was the drug addict at the end yeah , man . I felt like he didn't . He didn't feel appreciated from the government after all he did for his , for his country yeah , of course he couldn't . He jumped right back into trouble right after he came back from From Nam .

Speaker 2

But why is that right ? Because you know he needed to provide for his family .

Speaker 1

Yeah .

Speaker 2

And nobody was giving him an opportunity for him to work . So you know he knew guns . He knew guns , he knew just how to , like you know , to use them and he thought that a robbery would have just changed his trajectory in life .

Speaker 1

But it turns out Fortunately it didn't Solid five .

Speaker 2

Yeah , absolutely Solid five .

Speaker 1

Solid 5 . Yeah , absolutely Solid 5 , absolutely Alright , where are we at ? So now we're switching gears , we're gonna go to Funny hood movies . What about Desperado Before we go there ? Desperado , you're right , desperado is on the list Tony Banderas . Mr Banderas , sam Hayek Quentin Tarantino . Quentin Tarantino , you can't go wrong with that . Machine guns In guitar briefcases Strong . In guitar briefcases Strong , it's strong , good music , good music yeah . Did you see the one before that ?

Speaker 2

No , El Mariachi , el Mariachi yeah .

Speaker 1

It was based on that , right . Well , it started . It was somebody that was playing the role that what's his name ? Antonio played . Okay , he got killed . He got killed . And then what's ? Yeah , okay , I get it it's a good movie .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I like it . I like the fact that Tomahai again her prime . It was just respectfully respectfully it's one of our actress . You know she's great , but you know you can't go wrong with Tarantino .

Speaker 1

He's the

Latino Films: Sin Nombre and Sicario

Speaker 1

Speaker 1

You said Kill Bill Pulp Fiction oh , pulp Fiction , yeah . Pulp Fiction , yeah . Good , I haven't seen that in a while .

Speaker 2

But yeah , quentin Tarantino man , shout out to him , he does great movies . But then going back to what ? To our dialogue over here comedy hit movies , ooh .

Speaker 1

Friday what Ooh Friday ? What you got Friday Friday iconic generational movie that will play after we're dead Right , absolutely . Have your kids seen that ? Probably , yeah , definitely heard of it . I'm sure they did . Yeah , you think they'll like it though . Hmm , you think they will like it as much as we did when we were younger . No , you know why , though , I think ? Okay , go . I think because when we were at least I was most of the time that I saw this movie when I was younger I was always mad blazed . I was mad high .

Speaker 2

Okay .

Speaker 1

Like obviously just weed , yeah , yeah , yeah . So I found that just about every scene's hilarious , okay , and you know kids these days , days they usually be on their phones , yeah , right I mean different times , different times .

Speaker 2

Would they like it ? Probably not as much as we did , but it's funny yeah you know I mean and it holds up yeah , so I think I love it yeah , I think it's one of the best comedy movies that I've ever seen . I think part two and part three is also there too as well . Obviously , part one is my favorite , but they all were great . Yeah , friday definitely top . I'll give it a good , solid five .

Speaker 1

Yeah , because it still holds up it still holds up Debo the man , we're about 40 , homie . Bye Felicia , Bye , Felicia , Felicia . That line will live on in history . Yeah , that was amazing .

Speaker 2

That line was crazy . Another quote from Friday would be Chris Tucker when he says it's Friday , you got shit to do . You ain't got no job .

Speaker 1

You ain't got no job , you ain't got shit to do . You said a five , what else ?

Speaker 2

You got how High . Now that we're talking about stoners Word Method man great , method man great . Not Redman not too great , but Method man great . I mean I really don't got nothing to say about that movie , just the fact that it's just a movie that just involves weed college .

Speaker 1

It's what the title yes , how High .

Speaker 2

It's just funny , yeah , but you know what ? Another movie that we haven't even listed in our paper here , that I think is part of the comedy hood , is Half-Baked Half-Baked , come on . Yeah , dave Chappelle was hilarious that movie .

Speaker 1

Speaker 2

I forgot the movie , what it's called um jesus christ . He was there , um with um , with a bunch of other comedy comics . Oh , but who could forget about this movie ? Uh , big mama big mama's house .

Speaker 1

I was just looking at that . Yeah , that's a good movie . I haven't seen that in a very long time . Yeah , I wonder if it still holds up yeah , it does .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I love that movie . For sure , dave Chappelle was hilarious .

Speaker 1

Luke Wilson . Luke Wilson's the other guy .

Speaker 2

I could just take off and make him lick my balls .

Speaker 1

Yeah , that's a good movie .

Speaker 2

Oh , dude , you got to see that movie Blue . We recommend .

Speaker 1

That one . We give it a solid five too A thin line between love and hate .

Comedy Hood Movies: Friday

Speaker 2

two kids trying to do a house party . What about ? Above the Rim Do you remember that Above the Rim Is that with Tupac .

Speaker 1

With Tupac . Yeah , when he played he was like a drug dealer , right A drug dealer .

Speaker 2

That actor never seen , it never seen it .

Speaker 1

It's a good movie I like it .

Speaker 2

It's about four jamaicans that apparently initially they wanted to get to the Olympics as a track team but they failed because I don't know . Something happened . It was an accident or someone cheated Anyway they were handed an opportunity to be in the bobsled team , which is weird because the Jamaicans they have no snow .

Speaker 1

Anyway team , which is weird because the jamaicans , they have no snow anyway . Just like , uh like , florida has a hockey team and there's no . There's no snow in florida exactly story for another day . Exactly what are we missing ? Is there some movie that you can think of , that you're like ? You know , what I fucking love this movie and I'm . I would watch it again and again , whether it is classic hood movies or funny hood movies or Mexican related movies that you enjoy watching . Yes .

Speaker 2

I'm going to go back to the Mexican hood and gangster movies . There's one in particular that we haven't mentioned that I think is a great movie and if you haven't watched it and you kind of want to learn a little bit about our culture and what we and how we grew up , you got to watch my family , me familia me familia . Uh , actors there jimmy smith , edward james , altmo asea , morales , jennifer lopez , I mean the list goes on um what else jayla was in that yeah .
