Beyond the Score: How Florida Basketball Captured Glory While FSU Rebuilds

Austin Fletcher Season 3 Episode 353
Speaker 1:

what's up, welcome back. It's the north florida sports network, your favorite podcast in the world, right here in north florida. How convenient for you, if you're right here in north florida, to be listening the north florida sports we got a big show coming up. We're going to talk about the Gators. They're the national champions. We'll talk about the final four games. Saturday too, we'll go over some baseball as well. We also will get into some spring football, and we're going to touch on some basketball recruiting, oh yeah.

Speaker 3:

And UFC 314 Saturday.

Speaker 1:

Oh my God, it's going to be a great show. Let's get it started. All right, welcome back. Florida. Gators are your national champs. Just like you predicted, jimmy. God damn it, I know, with Houston beating Duke, and what was the bigger choke?

Speaker 2:

I would say I mean there was that crazy stat with all the numbers Before you could even get to them, winning, you got to touch on that 335-0, and Duke was the only team to ever lose, when they pretty much dominated every stat but rebounding.

Speaker 1:

But yeah, houston came away with that one. And then it looked like the complete opposite scenario where they didn't even get a shot up the last three possessions, maybe four possessions, three turnovers in the last minute. I mean they didn't turn the ball over the whole game and they completely collapsed. Florida, I mean you can't say anything other than they've been. They were clutch all year long. When they had to win the big game, they did. And, um, what's his face? Was just clayton, scoreless in the first half, but he was not to be denied. When the game was on the line he came through two big and ones. Um, they got him in foul trouble. And then there were some brilliant calls on the side by a coach. I don't like him, but he's a good coach. Um, hats off to the gators, the uh, first school to ever have three in football and basketball that's not fact checked, by the way I fact checked it today and it's not true.

Speaker 3:

All right, good yeah you got minnesota oh yeah, and illinois have also done it yeah, all right.

Speaker 1:

Well, in the first, it still puts them in that next echelon of a basketball program where you know it's not just that run by billy donovan. You now have another national championship two decades later and sustained excellence all the way back to. I remember, uh, right after pat kennedy got the knolls to the lead eight, it was uh, what's his name? Lon kruger. Kruger got the gators to the final four With Andrew DeClercq, yeah. And then they had Billy Donovan, and now they have old Golden Todd Goldenboy. They look like they're going to be good next year. Hats off to the Gators. Houston plays. Just it's hard to watch, like you said, justin, and that was the only loss they had when giving up less than 70 points all year. Yeah, no, actually.

Speaker 3:

I did hear and that was the only loss they had when giving up less than 70 points all year. Yeah, no, actually I did hear what will be interesting to see with Houston next year. Dude is they've got two McDonald's All-Americans coming in next year as freshmen, so maybe they won't be quite as miserably boring to watch.

Speaker 3:

Maybe, they'll have some athletes that can play some offense and not just smother you on d, because I mean that that's what it seems. I mean they remind me of like watching like the knicks in the 90s dude, where yeah, it's just smothering defense and then john stark's going over 13.

Speaker 1:

Speaking of smothering defense, it was the gators that had the defense at the end of the game. They absolutely shut down everything Houston was doing and they physically just beat the shit out of you when they play you. Clayton's the football player Right.

Speaker 2:

I watched them play in Auburn and dude that big guy for Auburn. What Broom Johnny, johnny, broom, joe Nye. Dude he was beat up man, he was feeling it Body blows.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, they just keep pounding him down low and no one was spinning off.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, you ain't spinning off when guys are banging you down there, not when you're that size man, you ain't a spinner. So yeah, and next year, who knows what they'll look like? You got guys leaving Florida. I mean with basketball, basketball. It really is year to year.

Speaker 1:

Well, um, I'm gonna keep that's. We gave our credit to the gators. Now I think they're gonna be right up there with the favorites to win it again next year. It'll be in the group but his show is north florida and I want to talk about hoops. Before we switch it, switch gears. I want to talk about luke laux. I want to talk about Luke Laux. I want to talk about what he's been doing in the transfer portal, because he's got a few guys and the latest guy we're going to be lunch pailing it man.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah, FCS guy man Alex Steen.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, he's an 8.50 guy, that's right. First time defensive player of the year.

Speaker 2:

From the athletic hotbed talent area of panama city.

Speaker 1:

Well, he got him over kentucky and louisville and right you can play he's like to see that he's also got the guy from um correctful right kobe mcgee.

Speaker 1:

Kobe mcgee was lege lege yeah something sellers, something I can't remember uh, miami's got a lot of transfers coming in as well, so they hopefully uh looking like both those programs are going to turn around next year in a sport that's more year to year than any other sport I I can think of right now in the week I mean it's like you flip your roster every year, even the, even the good teams. It's just like all right, we got to go see who's available and that's why I was excited about them getting this kid from Panama City.

Speaker 2:

Well, I mean and it's the ACC dude it really is the bottom conference out of the power conferences, right, I mean Jay Billis spoke saying that's what cost Duke.

Speaker 1:

They didn't have enough competition all year, so when they got into a close game they kind of folded.

Speaker 2:

It's just an excuse, yeah. It was exactly what you said.

Speaker 3:

How much can you count on a kid that's supposed to be getting ready for prom?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, exactly In the.

Speaker 3:

Final Four. As good as Cooper Flagg is, dude, the kid should be in high school right now I don't think anybody was beating florida but duke.

Speaker 1:

But they couldn't. Well, they had a guy that could score with with clayton, if the only person that could probably bully duke a little bit was houston right, but they had nobody to score, right.

Speaker 2:

I mean, lj crier is not gonna oh, I know it was not gonna carry you, it was a dream scenario in terms of matchups.

Speaker 1:

if you're a Gator fan, I think Duke would have beaten Florida.

Speaker 2:

but you know, yeah, the Texas Tech meltdown was just really, really the dagger.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, but they were there, man in the clutch and at the end, and I like what Laux is doing back to FSU in the transfer portal. We'll keep an eye on that. A couple guys that are staying, swinton, and what's the other guy, malouk, the big guy.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I mean we'll see, man, it's going to take a few years.

Speaker 1:

Looking at a point guard from Holy Cross. Well, that's the thing. I don't think so.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

To see results. I mean look what Florida did last year.

Speaker 3:

I mean that you know, and then this year, right did they even make the tournament last year they did, they were good right, well, they, they.

Speaker 2:

I don't think mike white was ever really at the point. Well, golden was there last year, I know. But but the guy he replaced the guy, he, he, you know he did have a couple of pieces still there. Oh yeah, that's true.

Speaker 1:

now, I didn't mean they're going to be like Florida's level, but in terms of you can make a run at a bubble, you can flip the roster, it's a completely different roster.

Speaker 2:

You can be snugly in the NIT next year, Luke. The NIT next year, Luke.

Speaker 1:

That's enough hoops for now. Nba playoffs will get started. It's crazy in the West. We'll touch on that probably next show, when we get the seedings and the playoffs revealed. That's when I really start.

Speaker 2:

That and the NFL draft.

Speaker 1:

We'll touch on both of those.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 3:

And we got to see how many playoff teams fire their coach in the next three games. Right, right, oh my God, mike Malone and the Nuggets.

Speaker 1:

Right, right, because we had two teams fire their coaches in the past week, the Grizzlies, both in the hunt in what is a crowded West, both fired their coaches Insane.

Speaker 3:

That's wild. Only a few games left.

Speaker 1:

We'll see how it plays out.

Speaker 3:

It almost seems like a self-sabotage. I don't see how it could play out. Well, you bring in an interim coach and you're like all right, dude, you got three games, figure it out and we're in the playoffs like it just seems it's a player's league man it had to be a something that yoker joker had to yeah

Speaker 2:

sign off on right, you're not doing that without the only way yeah and the other, and so and so all right, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1:

All right, fsu baseball. What's up?

Speaker 2:

Oh God, they're not that good man, they're just not that good.

Speaker 1:

They fell to number nine, which is still respectable, but then they lost to a struggling Florida team, which now puts them on the losing side of the season series. Right, and they just gave it a home run three-win shot right down the middle.

Speaker 2:

No, we got to talk about the weekend man, yeah, they got dominated. That was some historic domination.

Speaker 1:

They won the first game, 5-4, in a walk-off game.

Speaker 2:

And then it was what 12-0 and then 19-2, was it 17-2. All right, they were outscored. I don't know what is that? Do the math man? I'm not mathing good.

Speaker 1:

It's 29-2.

Speaker 2:

29-2 and 15 minutes 29-2. Oh, good God.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, all I heard you say was a 15.

Speaker 1:

This is the first time you saw some competition in a Wake Forest team that wasn't at full strength, right Coming here and just kind of Right.

Speaker 2:

They were not even. They didn't have their best pitching available, dude like. So Miami baseball right now is a struggling program because of their coach. Like that's what's going on. Florida State was able to get a series win against Miami. Struggling program because of their coach that's what's going on. Florida State was able to get a series win against Miami. Notre Dame and Boston College are going to be two of the worst teams record-wise in the ACC. So those were the first three weekends of conference play for Florida State and even then you saw signs of the pitching getting shelled at times. That game against Miami, where they just unloaded on them against Jamie Arnold Like they have a serious problem at pitching starters bullpen.

Speaker 1:

Like they. You wouldn't think that the starters was. I thought it was the strength of the team it was supposed to be. Yeah, it was built as as what they were going to lean on this isn't just like had they had a bad start, because for veleni that's what it is, it's just one bad start right.

Speaker 2:

It's one bad start for veleni. Arnold has has looked, he looked better he looked better, but it's not necessarily.

Speaker 1:

Two guys didn't have it this time right, and men does the same thing.

Speaker 2:

what's more concerning is the number of walks, but their inability to go into games. Like extended games, man, they're lasting five innings at the most. The bullpen wasn't going to be the strength, even with the pitching, the starting pitching, they knew there were questions at the bullpen and they have some serious issues. Nobody looks ready, Like to me. The pitch calling is suspect.

Speaker 2:

You know I think teams are on it pretty early in games and weekends and I don't know, dude, the number of home runs they're giving up. And I'm only saying that because they were billed to be such a good team this year, pitching wise. You know that's gonna. If they're not gonna have that, then that's a team that's not gonna really do my, I mean you talk about see, yeah, um, I wouldn't put too much into a loss at florida, I mean still no, they were actually the.

Speaker 1:

The pitching was just one mistake yeah, yeah bomb, no o2 pitch, hung it right there. Right, so I mean, but it's he got a rebound Virginia Tech's, probably mid-middle of the road.

Speaker 2:

Now they swept Wake Forest man.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, so this is a real team. They're a team that can hit.

Speaker 2:

All right, that's what I was talking about You're going to hit no matter what we'll see.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, they. You know, a lot of times you hit that change in competition. It might hit him if it continues with this series. I think you have really something to worry about, right, this is a good bounce back series to have someone with this ability to be able to come up and, biggest thing that I would like to see is just the starting pitching.

Speaker 2:

I don't even give a shit about the bullpen blowing the games. I want to see the starting pitching be able to get past, at least to the sixth inning, maybe even past the sixth inning all three games this weekend. But that remains to be seen. So there we go.

Speaker 3:

God, that used to be a requirement, yeah, that used to be like the expectation.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, that used to be the expectation.

Speaker 3:

That was a requirement for a starting pitcher, man Dude. It wasn't until the 90s, man, when starting pitchers weren't expected to pitch eight innings like in the majors, dude.

Speaker 2:

When it became a setup guys. Yeah, now the arms are such a huge deal like the health of the arms, because they're throwing 7 million pitches by the time they're 15.

Speaker 1:

You got to get the bullpen figured out, and that's what you have right here. You have an opportunity to figure out who can you rely on in these next series. That's how you got to look at it. All right we'll keep an eye on it. We'll stick with spring football. It's closed, but we got, we got some questions. I want to know some stuff about the Seminoles. They were, you know, you know, everybody knows, two games last year, I mean well, I mean you know, we got Castellanos at quarterback.

Speaker 2:

Right, right, we do have have him. He's apparently in a really happy place, feels much better about being being a quarterback at florida state than he did at boston college under o'brien billy. Um, I don't know, man. I, like you said we're receiver hakeem williams is hurt. Yeah, he's hurt, dude, he hurt his hand. It it practiced. Standing on the sideline is what's described as a freak accident. What about Squirrel? Squirrel? I mean, he's one of those non-contact type of guys. You know he's in and out of being.

Speaker 2:

That is his real name, I don't know his real name Squirrel White from Tennessee. Like the guys like that, there are guys that are holding out a spring because they know relatively what you like, boggs, I do. I like the freshman Javon Boggs, the kid that was going to go and play for Gus at Central Florida. I think at one time he was committed to Oregon I might be getting the guys from last year confused but he was committed to somebody bigger and then decided he was going to stay home and play for Gus.

Speaker 1:

Committed to somebody bigger and then decided he was going to stay home and play for gus, his kid from orlando, also singleton, at running back. You saw those. You know little flashes of him last year.

Speaker 2:

Yeah especially on special teams as well I think, out of all the guys that have good size at running back, you know, jaylen lucas is is the most explosive, but he's tiny. Um, I think singleton is really the only one that can probably give you anything. Dude, I'm not expecting a whole lot from Cam Davis. What about?

Speaker 3:

I was just going to ask what y'all thought, what was up with Cam, Because I mean that guy was like built in a lab.

Speaker 2:

He's the Jeff Luke of running backs man. I mean, I just think it was dude. I think he got here Now. Maybe he'll shock me and pick it up in year two, but he's the guy. I think if you're going to get something out of him, it's going to be a couple years to where he actually picks up the feel for playing running back instead of just going out there and expecting to overpower everybody, because that shit ain't going to happen. Still got Thomas at tight end Right. You got the junior, landon thomas, the freshman chase lofton from nebraska they're, they're, they're really high on that game and there's a lot of talk about him. And and you lost the other freshman from last year at tight end, amari williams. He moved over to defensive end. That's probably going to be your, your most explosive player coming off the edge.

Speaker 1:

Wow, and so let's go there to defense. What about linebacker?

Speaker 2:

Man. I mean they got some experience with Elijah Herring, the kid from Memphis, but it's still going to be. I hear a bunch of Omar Graham and read a bunch about him and it's like dude, I don't know, man, we'll see. Could it be worse than it was last year?

Speaker 1:

Well, we, got the guy from Nebraska on the other end, right, yeah, yeah, you got James, I mean you have pass rushers and things like that.

Speaker 2:

But the defensive ends are going to be bigger with this three-man front, obviously, dude. So it's going to look a little different. You're going to have linebacker types coming off the edge, more of like what georgia and alabama's more big defensive ends, right, more powerful guys, um, but we'll you know, defense wasn't the glaring issue last year. I mean, they sucked at times, but they were still probably good enough to get you seven or eight wins.

Speaker 1:

The old line's sitting out, probably, but you have a lot. You got three starters sitting out it.

Speaker 2:

I mean it. It can't be any worse, right, it can't be literally like if it gets worse, then you don't. You don't play football anymore here in florida state. It's worse than last year. That shit was just awful. Um, so I mean, like I said, man six win dream anywhere from six to eight words and you know hey successful little season that's gonna.

Speaker 1:

I'm circling that one is that here?

Speaker 2:

I don't know. It's down there, I want it, I want it, I want it well, it'll be it'll be, homecoming food.

Speaker 1:

There'll be a lot of castellanos guys there, man I'm hoping to bring that mood, you, or the transfer, the big transfer he's got a lot of even though I think, carson beck's a lot better than dj we underleway.

Speaker 2:

Well, their rosters aren't even comparable at this time, man, it's night and day.

Speaker 1:

I'm hoping that there's some sort of mojo with that. Just hoping it's competitive.

Speaker 2:

Last year wasn't too bad, man. We had something to hang our hats on.

Speaker 1:

It wasn't our worst loss on the season Miami has to. We'll see what the defense looks like with the new D coordinator.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, that's what it's going to be, dude, it's all on the defense with Miami, because I mean, like you said, like Beck isn't a game changer, but he'll, with Carson Beck, you know what you're going to get. You're going to get a solid quarterback.

Speaker 1:

Miami's offensive line is still completely stacked Right you got the, I think the defense needs to step up, though, because he's good, but he's not Cam Ward good.

Speaker 3:

Oh yeah, oh no, dude. I mean the defense needs to be the polar opposite of what it was last year. Right, and I got to blame the coaching on it, because what we've seen with Miami the past couple, couple of years, with christobal, each year we get more and more athletes, so we've got the athletes on the field. It's just a matter of coaching them up and obviously they could. We could not coach up that defense last year. Um, we brought in the new dc and he has got, he's got to get that. I mean we got to break the top 100 on defense. I mean that's a huge improvement, sadly.

Speaker 2:

Well, guidry, the old guy man, the old DC, he's worn his welcome out at quite a few places during his career. He's just kind of that personality man and that's the kind of shit you get in season when guys piss everybody off. I think he had that going on here at Florida State with a couple of guys too, man. So the talent though is a real.

Speaker 2:

There is a distinct disadvantage when it comes to the two schools, man, Like we're not recruiting at the same level. So we'll see. Like I said, hope it's competitive. Six to eight wins, man. That's all I'm really asking for, Anything less than that. And you got to start scrounging up some buyout money for oh boy, maybe a year or two down the well, we'll see.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, this is where you're going to see that the you're the recruiting that you haven't hit on right, but I'm only talking about like a few in a few games on our schedule.

Speaker 2:

Man, there's only a few teams we play that are recruiting at elite levels and have a clear talent all right, we'll go over that.

Speaker 1:

Florida's looking good too.

Speaker 2:

Dang, I leg way lagway ain't even throwing though, man yeah a lot of momentum there.

Speaker 3:

We'll see well, I actually read, uh read, an article yesterday, dude speaking of Florida, jaden Rashada's lawsuit is moving forward.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah, they've dismissed some aspects of it, but it's going through to discovery, as they call it. Yeah, they weren't able to throw it out, dude, I mean, it's definitely a shady deal man, the booster, the guy that owns the dealership down there, 100% lied to the kid and his dad or misled them and said he could give him money that he had no access to or didn't really want to do it. But I think it's like.

Speaker 3:

I hate to see it for this Jaden Rashad.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I hate it.

Speaker 3:

Like, but I mean, dude, I honestly it seems like his dad is just pimping him out and was running into every program trying to cash as many checks as he could. Yeah, there's uh and I and I think he's been screwed dude, I think I like his actual career is over. This is his last chance to cash in as his lawsuit, because nobody's going to take him seriously. I mean, I don't even know where he's at now.

Speaker 2:

He's taking some visits to schools like Western Kentucky. He left Georgia. I mean, honestly, dude, that would probably be the best-case scenario for him is to end up at like a group of five Dude, just to keep playing. Oh yeah, you start thinking about kids like him. Think about a kid like Malik Henry. They're out of football two years after they signed, like dude. That's why recruiting is a big Right. You got to watch out for the helicopter parents in recruiting man. I mean, sometimes you get Jaden Daniels' mom. Sometimes you get, like I said, malik Henry's dad, this kid's dad.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, or Jaden McFadden's dad.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, uh-oh, uh-oh. What's up? We got a fight. We got a fight, fight night. Is there a fight coming up. We got real fights.

Speaker 2:

this weekend I smell a real fight man Real real brutality.

Speaker 1:

UFC. Tell us about it. What number are we on?

Speaker 3:

Oh well, this is UFC 314. All right, and we have got an absolutely loaded card. Funny enough, I didn't realize this until yesterday. I'm the perfect guy to talk about it, because the fight's in Miami, nice.

Speaker 1:

There you go.

Speaker 3:

But yeah, this card. You've got a co-main event in this card and really there's got to be on the prelims and the main card. There's probably six or seven fights that are all pay-per-view quality fights. Let's start off. You got the Ageless Wonder. Jim Miller is fighting in the prelims. For those of y'all who don't know Jim Miller, jim Miller is 43 years old. He has the record. He's got the record for most ever UFC fights, most ever UFC wins, most ever UFC losses.

Speaker 2:

That's what.

Speaker 3:

I'm talking about. He's the Brett Favre of UFC Dude he is Dude, he's a good fighter.

Speaker 3:

He's a fun fighter to watch because I mean he's like just a good old boy. Stand there and punch you in the face. He's fighting Chase Hooper, who is obviously younger, more lanky guy. Miller's more of a stocky guy. It should be a good matchup stylistically because of I mean they're both just like strikers, but Jim Miller is more like in-the-pocket striker where Hooper wants to use his reach to his advantage. So that will be an interesting fight to watch and that's on the prelim, so you don't even have to pay for that one. Then you get into the main card.

Speaker 3:

First fight right off the rip Nikita Krylov versus Dominique Reyes Is going to be awesome. Reyes for Again. For people who don't remember, reyes almost was the light heavyweight Champ a couple of years ago. He got screwed In a decision, in my opinion, against Leon Edwards and then never really Recovered, but he's trying to Make his way back. He's at number 11 in a decision, in my opinion against Leon Edwards and then never really recovered, but he's trying to make his way back. He's number 11 ranked in the light heavyweight. So Reyes really needs a win and I'll be pulling for Reyes because I still think he got screwed, like two years ago. So if you get screwed then I'm on your side. So I'd like to see Riaz win.

Speaker 3:

Um, now the final three fights on the main event uh card. These are these are all awesome, awesome, awesome fights. That alone could damn near carry a pay-per-view. Um, you got Yair Rodriguez against Patricio Pitbull. Um, which is going to be fantastic. Pitbull is relatively new to UFC. He's not new to the fight game, though. He dominated not PFL, but oh crap, what's the other damn fight league? Oh Jesus, I can't believe I'm brain farting on it. But yeah, he dominated. But he dominated the other one. God damn it, never mind. But yeah. So Pitbull's a hell of a fighter that if you're only a UFC fan, you've only seen him fight a couple of times. But if you're a sick twisted fight fan like myself Bellator, that's what it's called Bellator, he dominated, bellator. I knew it would come to me. I knew it would come to me. I knew it would come to me. Everybody in the suit, everybody in the suit. Good job you understand that.

Speaker 3:

But Pitbull, he's another stalky type fighter who prefers to do a lot of striking, but he's from Brazil and you know what that means. You're from Brazil, you do jiu-jitsu. Oh yeah of striking, but he's from brazil and you know what that means. You're from brazil, you do jiu-jitsu. So, um, I, I got, I got pitbull in the upset over. Uh, yair rodriguez. Yair rodriguez is a great, great fighter, but I, I, for some reason, I think patricio pitbull is going to get him. Um, that'll be a nice payout for you, uh, gamblers out there, because Yair Rodriguez is fifth ranked featherweight and Pitbull is not ranked as a featherweight just because he's new into the UFC, so he hasn't built up a resume UFC specific yet, so that could be a good payout for my gambling buddies. Now this, the co-main event, now this one, this one might be the the most fun you'll have watching a fight in the next six months. Um, you got michael chandler going against patty the baddie pimblitt patty and oh dude, patty the baddie's fun man.

Speaker 3:

He did he like he does his best connor, his best Connor impression. He likes to talk trash. He's an exciting fighter. You get him on the ground and he's done. Luckily, michael Chandler doesn't go to the ground. Michael Chandler is also just A stand there and punch you in the face type guy. This fight should be Bloody as hell. I don't See a knockout. I mean Chandler's got knockout power but Patty doesn't. But Patty is quick enough. He's got good head movement. I don't think he'll get caught by Chandler, but these guys are going to beat the shit out of each other.

Speaker 2:

That's what I'm talking about.

Speaker 3:

Their faces are going to be when Rogan's in there interviewing them after the fight, dude, their faces are going to be swollen up like you won't even. They won't even be recognizable, dude. That fight is going to be so much freaking fun that's Saturday night everyone and the main event.

Speaker 3:

Main event now Alexander the Great Volkanovski. Alexander Volkanovski against Diego Lopez is going to be another awesome, awesome fight. I'm going to go with Volk winning this one because I love him. I love him, but Diego Lopez is a younger cat. He's quicker, he's also Brazilian, so he's going to be able to jiu-jitsu a little bit. Volk is decent on the ground, but Volk is a stand-up striker and I'm hoping that he's going to be able to catch Lopez. If Volk doesn't knock Lopez out in the first three rounds, then Lopez is going to win the fight. But yeah, those three final fights, man.

Speaker 1:

I mean, those three are both, so your heart's going one way and your head's going the other.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, I think Volk is a little past his prime and I think Lopez is on the way up, but I'm going to go ahead and take bulk on this one because, one, I love him and two, he's got more striking power. Um, and that striking power, when you got a heavy hand in the UFC, I mean just as Derek Lewis dude, all he can do is throw a freaking overhand right and that dude has won like 20 fights with that one skill and both, uh, strong, all right. Um well, thank you, justin.

Speaker 1:

Ufc fights with that one skill and Volks, a stronger striker, alright, well, thank you, justin. Ufc 314 this Saturday. It's going to be a big one, as you heard. Uh-oh, here are the birds chirping. It's in the air. What's that you don't know? Help me, Let me help you.

Speaker 2:

I'm not going to. I think somebody needs to help you.

Speaker 1:

Yes, you know what time it is the Masters.

Speaker 2:

Bobby Jones.

Speaker 1:

As we swing into April, the major season Swings into season as the 2025 Masters gets underway. Tomorrow will Rory McIlroy finish the career Grand Slam, or will it be defending champion Scotty Scheffler, or the live guys in Brooks Kapka and Bryson DeChambeau? Or could it be someone else, someone you haven't heard of? It all starts tomorrow. The azaleas are blooming. Tomorrow, the azaleas are blooming. Jim Nance announced his retirement in 11 years.

Speaker 2:

I'm going to retire in about 11 years.

Speaker 3:

It's going to be a good one. Does that even count? Does that even count as a retirement announcement? It's like hey, man, I'm going to take Saturday and Sunday off. This weekend I'm not working.

Speaker 1:

Who's going to be the winner? Who do you like you gotta?

Speaker 2:

take a I know golf's not your forte, justin, but who are you picking uh shooter mcg, all right there you go.

Speaker 1:

He's going to get that green jacket. I'm going off the board. This might be the year that McElroy does it. He just won the players. What whoop-dee-doo it's going to come down to him, Scheffler, I think the big guns crowded leaderboard. The one track that you get to play every year at the majors is right here in Augusta it should be, fun.

Speaker 2:

I actually did.

Speaker 1:

I'm going to go with Bryson DeChambeau as your winner. How about that?

Speaker 3:

I actually did hear a golf guy on the radio bring something up. That was kind of interesting. Apparently they've done a lot of landscaping changes at Augusta and cut down some trees and stuff. And he was talking about, like, as you said, this is one of the courses that never changes, it doesn't rotate, it's always in Augusta and so people know the course. And he was talking about and I'm sure this does affect the golf game I wouldn't really know A tree here, but if you got trees cut down in certain areas where they weren't cut down before, you're going to get little wind pockets and different things like that. It could screw up a lot of people. So you might be able, because of something like that, you might see somebody come out of nowhere.

Speaker 1:

I can't wait.

Speaker 3:

I look forward to it every year, sitting on the couch If I could get there if I could get to Augusta and eat one of those dollar hot dogs then I'd be fired up for it, oh yeah, excellent yeah yeah, that's what you do yeah, I mean, I get everything all right, they got a pimento cheese sandwich I've heard him talk about we gotta get on out of here.

Speaker 1:

All right here, but we got the masters, u Masters, ufc 314. We got college baseball. Who knows, aaron Rodgers might decide to sign with somebody.

Speaker 3:

Who cares? He'll announce at the Masters Right.

Speaker 2:

So it's all about me, yeah.

Speaker 1:

Oh boy.

Speaker 3:

We got a little over a week until WrestleMania, uh-oh. Oh yeah, table, I got some breaking down that for you next week, all right.

Speaker 1:

We'll react to the Masters next time and I'm really going to get into the NBA playoffs. The West is crazy right now. If you look at the standings in the NBA West right now, it's insane. You have four teams tied for one seed and then two other teams a game within that. In the West you have the Thunder. It has pretty much clinched the one seed. The Rockets are the two seed, but then you have the Lakers up by a game and then it's the Clippers Nug. You have the Lakers up by a game and then it's the Clippers Nuggets, warriors, grizzlies all tied Timberwolves down one game and then the what's going to happen? Who's going to play in the play-in game? You could go from being the four seed, like Timberwolves would have been, but they blew a lead in the fourth quarter. We're up like 20 points and now they're the eight seed, just like that. So that's brutal. That's going to come down to the end. It could go either way, from three to eight. We'll be decided here at the end. Then we'll get into the playoffs.

Speaker 1:

In the East you have the Cavs and the Celtics, the Knicks, pacers, bucks, pistons, magic Hawks, bulls and Heat. Looks like that'll be your playoff. They pretty much set in the East, so we'll figure out who the West is going with. We'll talk about that next time as well. So a big weekend ahead, a lot of sports to watch. Be safe out there. We'll watch it, we'll react to it and we'll talk to you next time Right here on the North Florida Sports Network.
