Everybody, just do your job. You understand that. The North Florida Sports Network Alright, welcome back to your favorite podcast in the world, the North Florida Sports Network. We got a big show for you today. It's a quick one. We're going to run down the transfer portal. Who left? Who's here? What's it going to mean this fall? We might get to NBA playoffs if we have time, but I doubt it. We might talk about FSU baseball, but I doubt it. But stick around. We might get to both of those things, but we're gonna start with the transfer portal.
Speaker 2:it's close end of spring practice.
Speaker 1:it's closed. So we gotta assess and go over what the expectation should be this fall, because that really means everything. You have to have the right expectations. Lower them Right. Oh, of course, we got Debbie Downer, jimmy Reno with me, yep, and we're ready to go. Let's fire it up. No, that's not it.
Speaker 2:Great start to the weekend.
Speaker 1:Dynamite. Let's get it started. Welcome back.
Speaker 1:All right All right, we got one job to do. Let's go over this transfer portal. It's closed. It's closed. The roster's starting to take form and you can really understand that when you look at who was here last year and who is not here this year. Let's go down that list as deuce span boom out of here.
Speaker 1:Wide receiver pittsburgh. Dante anderson, defensive, nfiu. Ireland. Turner tulsa, jackson, west western kentucky, jackson, west Western Kentucky. Tomiwa, deer O'Jockey, illinois. Omarion Cooper, memphis. Destin Hill, lsu. Lamont Green Jr, fiu. Julian Armala, ucla. Brian Courtney, tennessee Tech. Darian Williamson Wow, he's still got eligibility. Well, he's going to Miami of Ohio, all right. Jarrell Powers. Stephen F, austin. Demarco Ward, memphis. Luke Cromanhoe, mississippi State. Marvin Jones Jr, oklahoma. Grady Kelly, michigan State. He's visiting Arkansas. Tj Ferguson, syracuse. Dinas White remains in the portal. Aaron Hester, liberty. Ty Meyer. Hickman Collins remains in the portal. That's a lot of people man Jesus.
Speaker 2:Goodness, gracious I stopped counting at 15.
Speaker 1:That's the departures, which I guess is what you should expect when you're 2-10 and you have an open market.
Speaker 2:Right, but, good lord, that's a lot, it's a lot. What sticks out is that a lot of it is guys that Norvell and his staff recruited themselves.
Speaker 1:Which is something that you've been on Norvell the whole time.
Speaker 2:Right Is his guys that he hasn't recruited Shuffling decks on the Titanic man Deck chairs.
Speaker 1:Well, if you look back and it's sad news that we hear Jordan Travis this week retired from that injury but if you look back at his tenure at Florida State, it was really a lot of him pulling Houdini acts.
Speaker 2:Oh, it's unbelievable you go back and look at 22 and 23, the games they won, and it's incredible that he was able to do half the stuff that he was able to do.
Speaker 1:Sad story. That was wish he wouldn't have played that game. Still talk about it. Right, but he did, and it is what it is.
Speaker 2:But if you, if you just think about him, the player he was, and you Think about that season and what could have happened. Right, I understand that.
Speaker 1:That's Monday morning quarterback.
Speaker 2:A lot of people say that Exactly, but at some point somebody else that's on the head coach to make that decision, Right? Somebody else was still going to have to play quarterback. Travis wasn't going to be here forever, right?
Speaker 1:That's what I'm trying to get at Then you get at what we see a lot of players leaving. We got to. What I'm excited about is a lot of newcomers on the offensive line.
Speaker 2:Yeah, but I think this is just like it is. What what you're going to have to do with with FSU going forward for the foreseeable future is just worry about who you got Once the portal closes. Don't worry about recruiting in high school and things like that, because anybody you sign out of high school there's just as good a chance that they're going to be part of the wave of the fat trimming that we just saw. Because I mean, there's that 20-something names that you just read off. There were high-ranked kids, there were middle four stars, there were lower three stars something names that you just read off it. There were high-ranked kids, there were you know middle four stars, there were lower three stars. They could have been you know diamonds in the roughs when you took them tight, those types man, but it's. That's an entire recruiting class that you just read off I know it's ridiculous.
Speaker 1:So well, I mean in a good and part of me is like good written. I mean a good part of me is, and I mean when you're that, when you have a record, like you did last year, and the results is you need almost like a wash your hands of it and in this environment, is something that you can do now. You don't want to have to do this every year, but you kind of have to?
Speaker 2:yeah, you do. You don't expect to have to do it a year after you know you had such success, but when you know, when you had 90 percent of your, your offensive and really your team's success resting on the shoulders of Jordan Travis, and it you know.
Speaker 1:All right, so the portal closed. What are something? Name something that you're happy about and then something that you're totally pissed on.
Speaker 2:We got a new QB, we got a guy that's familiar with the new offensive coordinator system. So that's two positives right there that you didn't have last year. You didn't have an offensive coordinator with the system, really, and you know, you didn't have any kind of familiarity with the quarterback and we won't even get into the quarterback being who you took, but anyway. So the quarterback position was a positive. You know, I know you lost Crowman Hawk, but it is what it is, man. That kid wasn't showing you anything yet. That said, he was going to be able to win games, win ACC games, which is what you have to worry about right now.
Speaker 1:Yeah, you got gotta win games. Um. So the offensive line, any newcomers that you should know about and on the o-line, I mean the entire offensive line, are newcomers.
Speaker 2:Man, that's great. Yeah, everybody you know, you hope that they're good, let's just put it that way the entire facelift of the offensive line. I hope it works out. I'm not sure that anybody who started last year along that front is going to be starting this year. I mean, a lot of them are gone, but there are a few holdovers. We'll see.
Speaker 1:We'll see, we'll see, yeah well, you got Jalen Matthews, you got Joshua Raymond, a couple of names.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:You know, you got Mario Nash Jr, Andre Otto, Right, you got bodies Manassi At Atit.
Speaker 2:Jonathan Daniels, you're not void of talent. Lucas Simmons yeah, some guys, some guys that are that are still around from Atkins.
Speaker 1:You know that may have some talent we haven't had an offensive lineman drafted since 2018 right.
Speaker 2:I mean we've had a couple years there with Jimbo and when the offensive line kind of clicked a little bit, but really for about the last 20 years it's just been subpar for one reason or the other well, um, when you look at the O-line though, you got a new center, you got new guards, new tackles, new everything new coach new coach. Herb Hand right and when you're talking about probably the worst unit in any FBS conference any.
Speaker 2:FBS team, then there's really nowhere to go but up. So yep, making strides, man Well you didn't get.
Speaker 1:you know the playmaker that I was hoping to get on the edge. I was hoping to get another wide receiver on offense and maybe another edge rusher on defense. You didn't get that, but you're not usually going to get that after a two and 10 season.
Speaker 2:Well, you're not going to get that in the spring. You got the.
Speaker 1:O-line changed over. You got the new coach, you got a whole new system. Um, you got big biscuit out of there only because he came back. But that was. And once the new change was in, you know we want blockers and I don't think he was ready to do that with the weight loss and everything yeah, we need to have.
Speaker 2:Just well, he's back, I mean, you know.
Speaker 1:So back again, yeah back and back again, all right, so, uh, we got a lot of new additions, addition by subtraction, as we said, a whole bunch of names that that's got to be part of the problem. When you go off a two and ten season, you get everybody out and you got to want to be here and I'm happy that they did that and it looks like the coach did it too.
Speaker 2:I mean he's changing it.
Speaker 1:He's changed not only he changed the roster, he changed the coaching staff, he changed the roles within that staff. So he's done about everything there is to do. If he doesn't win, now you're fired. Is that what you're saying?
Speaker 2:well, I, I don't think that they can afford that right. Florida state's not going to fire him after this season. I mean, he, you know, you do two and ten again and then maybe we'll see um, but no, I, I don't I don't know man I'm excited about the line right? I think we need to. We need to get to the lowered expectations. Talk like all right, let's do it. Six to eight wins for the next three or four years. That that's what you're doing, all right, well, you got um.
Speaker 1:That's what you're looking. Let's look at the schedule. You open with alabama. You're looking at a loss there yeah all right.
Speaker 2:Then you have kind of an easy stretch there, um stretch where you got to accumulate wins well, you got two gimmies, supposed gimmies, you know, an fcs team and then kent state who had the only worse offense than we did last season and just fired their coach, so those should be two wins right there, both texas east A&M, kent State, then it's the big one at Virginia.
Speaker 1:That's really going to start the season.
Speaker 2:It's Norvell's career right there.
Speaker 1:Bowl or no bowl. I think if you lose that game, you're not going bowling. If you win it, you have a very good shot, correct. And then loss number two comes at home to rival Miami. I think this is a game you could win, but you're probably not. Um that's. Is that fair to say. You could win it, but you probably won't yeah sure we'll go whatever.
Speaker 1:And then you should win versus pittsburgh at home and you should win at stanford and you should win at home against way force. That gets you at six and two. You know we're losing at two home games, um to miami and alabama. So those two losses that you thinking that you should win, you'll have those opponents at home, so maybe you can get one of those right everything to everything, maybe seven and one, if everything goes uh yeah, I know that's.
Speaker 2:That's just looking at six and two. To me, though, would be like holy shit.
Speaker 1:Yeah, that's in your bowl. Eligibility out of the way you're not lose the rest of your games and still make a ball because you're beating pitts, then you're not just Because then you have at Clemson.
Speaker 1:That's the loss, the toughest game on the schedule. If you were to ask me right now, we'll do that here in a second. Then we got home to Virginia Tech and then at NC State, which is a tough place to play, always Florida State finds a way to lose. I want to count that as a loss too, then, but then if you win all those games seven and five at best, so we'll go over the five losses that we counted. The five in order of the season would be Alabama, miami, clemson, nc State, florida, but in rankings of which one's going to be the hardest to win, number one is Clemson.
Speaker 2:Yes.
Speaker 1:That's going to be the toughest game. I think they had the best quarterback that we're going to face all year.
Speaker 2:Best defense.
Speaker 1:Defense too, and then sat at the house and we don't have a special playmaker that it would take to win those type of games, as you did in Jameis or JT, because that's the only games we won.
Speaker 2:You need a lot of playmakers for that.
Speaker 1:Yeah, you need a whole team to just get out of there alive, so I don't see that happening. That's the number one game. What do you find the next most difficult game?
Speaker 2:Alabama based off roster based off first game of the season. So Florida.
Speaker 1:This is where you know. At Florida, some people might say, being on the road, you could go there, or Miami even, but you're going to go with Alabama. Number three is it.
Speaker 2:Number three I'm going Miami.
Speaker 1:Oh, wow Over Florida, so Florida on the road.
Speaker 2:I mean, you could argue a toss-up, but I just. I think Miami's got a better roster, so Florida four and that puts NC State five.
Speaker 1:So that's a If you were saying you probably I mean NC State's probably a coin flip, but I'm marking it down there.
Speaker 2:Right, nc State's probably a coin flip, but I'm marking it down there. Right, that's probably the same as that Virginia game.
Speaker 1:There's a big gap from four and five. Right right, but the four games you don't see any chance really. No, well Barring like an injury to the other quarterback. If everything goes, chair eight and four.
Speaker 2:Yeah, then that's what I'm saying that's about, but it's also the reverse way, where you could be three and nine. Yeah, I mean, you saw it last year.
Speaker 1:I think if you got somewhere eight wins, you had to nine to be a miracle. In the regular season you maybe get a bull win out of that.
Speaker 2:So there, you go Eight or nine would be pretty much coach of the year type shit man.
Speaker 1:Well, there it is. That's just a glimpse. Man, we got a lot to go. We had to go, With the transfer portal closing this week. Just wanted to take a quick glimpse of the pulse around the area you know you got to keep those expectations.
Speaker 2:Real man. We'll still be adding players throughout the week and weekend. The less we know the better it is.
Speaker 1:I like it, like this.
Speaker 2:Yeah, anyway, 2-10. Bro, you're going to have to just Major League One that shit.
Speaker 1:Open it up. Who are these guys? Right, there you go won that shit where they open it up who are these guys?
Speaker 2:right there you go, you gotta batten down the hatches.
Speaker 1:You gotta rally in the foxhole, but really everybody just needs to. That's it. Everybody just do your job. You understand that it's seven and five. If everybody just do your job, do your job, seven and five is achievement, but's 7-5. If everybody just do your job, 7-5 is achieving. But over the summer, if we're just slacking, you know, and you just run around and you get, then hey, you could be 3-9. We don't want to get. So everybody Good job. You understand that? Pretty simple.
Speaker 1:Nba playoffs Playoffs Are going on. The Lakers, the Knicks Survived. Beasley had 20 but Wasn't enough. As the Knicks Are off to the second round For like the third year in a row, they're gonna be battling the Celtics. The Cavs Are gonna be taking on the Pacers Over in the West, still battling it out as Game 7 upon us in the Denver Clippers Series, just like I said it would be. And then you have another Game 7. No, game 6. First in Golden State, up 3-2. A chance to close it out tonight. Winner of that series will take on the T-Wolves. The winner of the Clippers Nuggets will take on the Oklahoma City Thunder. So the playoffs are heating up every night. Entertainment stuff. Just wish they weren't on so late College baseball Big series for the Knolls.
Speaker 1:Yeah, clemson, we got our eye on that one, clemson coming into town. Knolls need a big series win after the disappointing effort in Louisville Both teams looked like shit last week, so we'll see what gives. That's about it, man. Kentucky Derby Get your gambling on, get your best hat, get your mint juleps, get your loot, and we'll watch it all and we'll react to it all right here on the North Florida Sports Network everybody just do your job.
Speaker 2:You understand that.
