Baseball Brackets and Buzzer Beaters
all right, welcome back.
Speaker 3:Happy holidays the north, it is the north florida sports network.
Speaker 1:We got a lot to get to. We got Jimmy Reno.
Speaker 1:Here we're going to go over all the college baseball seeds the regional hosts and all the seeds are going to be laid out for you here. I got a basketball extraordinaire Miami contributor, justin, to discuss what has been an amazing Eastern Conference. Final Western Conference is 2-1, but we're going to start at the college baseball regional sites and the seeds now have been released, so we're going to talk about that right away. Right here in North Florida, florida State, with the nine seed overall, they will be hosting the first regional and they will have teams Mississippi State, northeastern and Bethune-Cookman from the SWAC.
Speaker 1:Playing a tough game for FAMU, almost made it.
Speaker 2:Yeah, they walked FAMU off yesterday.
Speaker 1:Well, that's Bethune's, not someone to sneeze at, as the Noles have played them already. So they know that let's go from one. Start from the number one overall seed, which is Vanderbilt, who won the SEC tournament. Any surprise there?
Speaker 2:no, no, I mean there's no surprise. Sec was eight, eight or six of the top eight yeah, well, who's going to vanderbilt?
Speaker 1:well, louisville's going right state and eastern tennessee state. So let's go to number two, which is texas, and they will be hosting kansas state, utsa and, uh, uconn. Well, all right, hoop app houston. No, I'm sorry, dallas, baptist, dallas.
Speaker 2:Baptist it doesn't matter.
Speaker 1:UCLA. Let's go to number three, which is Arkansas, I believe.
Speaker 3:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Arkansas and they have North Dakota State, creighton and Kansas. Four is Auburn, who. I thought that was pretty high for them, but the RPI is really good.
Speaker 2:Yeah, there's a couple in.
Speaker 1:yeah, so Auburn's getting the four seed. They're going to be at NC State, though will be coming to town Stetson and then Central Connecticut.
Speaker 2:So this is the first region where I can see there being a potential upset. Yeah, and it's because NC State I can see there being a potential upset. Yeah, and it's because NC State, I can see it there.
Speaker 1:Okay, all right. Well, let's go to five. Moving on, five is UNC. Yeah, unc was five. Some people thought they'd get higher after winning the ACC and then big series went over the knolls. But they get the five. They'll be, uh, hosting oklahoma, nebraska, and holy cross, this should be a tough one yeah, they should be tough.
Speaker 2:They will, but they should win it yeah, um six goes to lsu.
Speaker 1:They will be. They have have Little Rock, rhode Island and Dallas Baptist. I'm sorry they have the one.
Speaker 2:Cake work for them.
Speaker 1:All right, that gives you to seven Georgia and.
Speaker 2:Athens, I thought they would be the four seed, Auburn the seven.
Speaker 1:but apparently not. Duke, blue Devils, oklahoma State Cowboys and Biggington Tony.
Speaker 2:Corners. This is another one. Yeah, there's another one that I think there's some potential shit ball to be played. Man Well eight.
Speaker 1:This is where it gets interesting.
Speaker 2:Oregon State gets the last eight seed Another one of those RPI things.
Speaker 1:They'll have TCU, usc and St Mary's. Then we are, like we said, florida State. The nine Get in Mississippi State, northeastern. Then Cookman, the 10 is it's Ole Miss, and this is where you're going to get Georgia Tech going Right, where you know your ACC regular season champ, sorry, no regional hosts. You're going to Ole Miss, dangerous lineup With Western Kentucky and Murray State. 11, you have Clemson, who will have Kentucky, west Virginia and upstate South Carolina. Twelve, oregon, with Arizona, cal Poly, utah State, utah Valley, sorry. And then 13, coastal Carolina, the Gators I got that one right With East Carolina and Fairfield. And 14 is Tennessee and they'll have Cincinnati, wake Forest and Miami of Ohio and 15. It's dynamite stuff right here. You like it. Who do you think? Oh, 15, there it is ucla, because they'll have arizona state, fresno, uc, irvine I know you haven't heard that yet because I've been waiting to the end as the 16 seed southern miss will host al, miami of Florida and Columbia.
Speaker 3:And there you have it, it's the only reason I come on the podcast.
Speaker 1:You made it, that's nine teams.
Speaker 3:I was about to get so mad. Nine teams from the.
Speaker 1:ACC. Nine teams from the ACC. Virginia is the left out there. Second most SEC led the way 13. Yeah, of course I mean they have half the regional hosts are in sec schools god between the sec and the acc.
Speaker 3:I mean it's pretty much just an acc. That's what it wasC invitation for the college world series.
Speaker 1:That's what it was. Yeah, so we'll see You're an FSU fan. What do you think, jimmy, you like?
Speaker 2:it. I think it's about the best you could have hoped for.
Speaker 3:Yeah.
Speaker 2:You avoided having Florida come in here at a number two, which was in a lot of the predictions, and you know, in terms of teams from the SEC, mississippi State is probably one of the weaker ones, so that's not a huge, but you got to focus on Bethune-Cookman, like you said.
Speaker 1:What about. Northeastern. Who the hell?
Speaker 2:I have no idea. One of those teams, though, right, never know, they probably played a lot of road games and won games, and that's really good for your RPI. Right, they probably played a lot of road games and won games, and that's really good for your RPI.
Speaker 1:They'll be the three, and Mississippi State the two That'll get kicked off this weekend. You expect, though, chalk mostly, and you told us the upsets. You wouldn't be surprised what Auburn.
Speaker 2:Yeah, auburn, the Ole Miss regional, southern Miss regional.
Speaker 1:I think that wherever Florida's playing, and don't be surprised Oregon State doesn't make it out.
Speaker 2:Yeah. With TCU there TCU was another team that was borderline host it's eliminated Florida State.
Speaker 1:if they win, they're hosting a super Right. The only way they don't host a super is if Oregon State wins. Their regional. So it's the best you could do without getting a top eight seed. Duh, because you're nine, but in terms of the matchup as well, if you're going to play anybody on the road, why not go across the country?
Speaker 2:Yeah, step up as well, if you're going to play anybody on the road, why not go across the country? Yeah, why not?
Speaker 1:Play somewhere you haven't played before. I'd rather do that than play at these SEC teams. Corvallis, I think they have a good shot to make it back to Omaha again.
Speaker 2:They have the opportunity. It could have had much, much tougher road. Some. Some schools got kind of kind of blamed on that one man well, it's like whatever it's baseball it is um, and there you have it a nine seed for the knolls.
Speaker 1:A good year for them, um, they'll be hosting the regional and their next matchup will be with the SWAC champion, bethune Cookman yeah, bethune broke FAMU hearts yesterday.
Speaker 2:Man, it was a real chance. It was going to be the Rattlers we were playing against.
Speaker 3:So that would have been really cool yeah, it would have been really cool.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it would have Jamie Shoup. He's actually turned them into a respectable program, not back to what it was, but they're not terrible yeah.
Speaker 1:Let's go to the hoops, man. How about game one of the Eastern Traverse Finals? We're the last person to talk about it. We almost did a show just about that game alone.
Speaker 3:Oh yeah, I mean, we probably should have that game was unreal?
Speaker 1:Yes it was. I've never seen anything like it. The Knicks had had what? So many leads. I mean they had like a nine point lead with 50 seconds left and then like a 20 point lead with two minutes and something left. It was incredible. Just the statistical anomalies that had to take place for the pacers to win that game. And then then the last shot itself hits the back of the rim and goes in the air and drops perfectly. That shit was crazy and down it was so nuts.
Speaker 3:It's like what those trick shot guys on the internet do.
Speaker 2:Yeah Well, just the sound of the arena to be like, I wonder how many people around the state of New York got punched in the face as just like a reaction of that people watching the game. That's that kind of shit.
Speaker 3:It reminds me of back uh, back uh in the strike season, with the Allen Houston shot against the heat to beat us in the first round when they were the eighth seed. Yeah, and the ball just bounced around the rim and just hung, and hung, and hung just long enough for you not to have another shot at it. And that Halliburton shot man. They wouldn't have even had to go into overtime if his foot was a half an inch back.
Speaker 1:That's what he was going for, but he double dribbled on the play too.
Speaker 3:Well, back because he ran. That's what he's going for, but he double dribbled on the play too. It's the playoffs, man, yeah, yeah, that's one thing that uh, uh, I've enjoyed um in the, uh, in the conference finals, man, they're letting these guys play um. The tiki tak fouls are gone. They're playing a more physical brand of basketball. I mean not quite the 90s, but a lot closer than you know, the steph shirk, steph curry three-point shooting contest that we've had for the past decade yeah, uh, it's, it's something, man.
Speaker 1:And then the game two you, new york, another hard-fought loss, as they're not being able to do it. But then game three they flip the script down. The whole game down 15 at half, down 20 in the second half. They turn it on, facing what would be a 0-3 deficit on the road. Come back, take game three.
Speaker 2:You say they, but I mean New.
Speaker 1:York Knicks take game three. Now it's 2-1.
Speaker 2:Pacers. It was one guy amongst Carl Anthony.
Speaker 1:Towns came to play at the end.
Speaker 3:I feel like Thibodeau must have hacked our phones, because I texted you after game two and I was like what the hell are they thinking not having Towns on the court in the fourth quarter and instead playing Mitchell Robinson to get rebounds? Then they go heavy cat in the court in the fourth quarter and instead playing Mitchell Robinson to get rebounds. Then they go heavy cat in game three. In the fourth quarter he dropped 20 and they win the game.
Speaker 1:Yeah, they needed it. Yeah, I needed every one of them. They have to yeah, they have to have him on the court. They have to have him playing aggressive and like a big man. Although he does have a good shot, he just can't fall too in love with it, Because you need him down low, you need him taking it to the rim when he's had his mismatch in size.
Speaker 3:Yeah, I mean, at the very least you got to be down there rebounding. You're seven foot tall man. You're getting benched for Mitchell Robinson, who can't hit a free throw. You know, get a rebound, bro, You're a stud.
Speaker 1:It's like the change in the game, though you know Like the game changes to where the three-point basket is, so you know it's so game-changing. A guy like Carlith in town, seven-footer, you don't want him out there shooting it, but he can also open up the court and when he's hot he can score 20 points in one quarter and win you a playoff game pretty much by himself.
Speaker 1:But I like the mixture of it he was aggressive and he's got to hit the glass. You know, because of the size and if you're going to spread the court and that's why you took them out you still have to be aggressive on the glass. You're not going to get as many rebounds, but you have to show.
Speaker 2:Some effort. Yeah, yeah, I got you.
Speaker 1:And when they're backwards against the wall they went. Will it be enough? We'll find out. The home team is yet to win In the Western Conference, it's the same, the road team it's the exact opposite, where the road team is yet to win as Minnesota one game, three by like 40. Um, it's only four fouls, or you got the calls at home, we didn't get them on the road.
Speaker 2:It just, I mean, it just feels like not enough man, Like one big win at home, maybe two, but they like everybody knows it's.
Speaker 3:Yeah. I kind of feel like we got two gentlemen sweeps coming.
Speaker 1:I don't know. Yeah, well, that means whoever wins game four wins the series.
Speaker 3:That's kind of how I'm looking at it. Oh, okay. Well, in that case, I don't see the Knicks. No way I could see the Knicks winning three in a row on Indiana at this point. If Indiana goes up 3-1, it's over.
Speaker 1:I'm with you there. I think they can get it to six.
Speaker 3:I could see Brunson coming out and dropping like 45, though, and winning game four.
Speaker 1:Yeah, if they win game four.
Speaker 3:It's going seven. If they win game four, four it's going seven. If they win game four, it's going seven. Dude, and we'll get game seven at MSG.
Speaker 1:That'll be a lot of fun definitely Minnesota and New York win game four, it's going to go seven. Until you're not going to say those teams would have to win it yet. So you're only going to be the safe only if Oklahoma City and Indiana win game four they're going to win it yet. So you're only going to be the safe only if Oklahoma City and Indiana win game four they're going to win. Now I'm saying whoever wins games four is going to win the series. That's much more.
Speaker 2:So how much of a chance do you give Minnesota for game four though?
Speaker 1:I think it's going to be like a really close game. I think Oklahoma City realizes that they need to grab this series now. And this game means everything, because if you led Minnesota back in a tie, it's going seven for sure and they could mess around and win game five and next thing you know you're out in six. But you said that means they win, that's what I'm saying. That's what I'm saying, that's my bold take.
Speaker 2:Whoever wins game four in either of these series is going to, but you're going to stick with it if Minnesota finds a way to do it. If they win, they're winning the series.
Speaker 1:They're winning it in six. They're going to go four straight. Now he's even getting bored. I'm not even going to say they're going seven. If I'm not even going to say they're going seven. If Minnesota wins, that's two out of the four that they're going to win straight To the finals. There you go, take it to the bank, all right. In the East I'd have much less faith in the Knicks, just because of the depth and Brunson's size, I guess. But you never know. I mean, I thought they were dead last night. They were dead.
Speaker 3:I actually stopped watching. I didn't know until this morning that they blew it.
Speaker 1:The Pacers that looked like they were going to. When they're ahead it's like uh-oh, watch out, but when they're behind they look dangerous.
Speaker 2:That's why I feel like that one's going to go seven.
Speaker 1:Both teams are the complete opposite. They don't know how to close, but they don't know how to die either.
Speaker 3:They're more evenly matched. I feel like OKC has just got more firepower than Minnesota.
Speaker 1:We'll see. It'll come down to game four, like I said like I said just like I told you. Well, happy memorial day weekend everybody we had to go. Yeah, happy Memorial Day. We gotta get on out of here, though, cause our ride's here. We're gonna get some hot dogs, maybe a little hamburger, maybe chicken, maybe a veggie burger, maybe a salad Veggie burger.
Speaker 3:What kind of coffee bullshit is that?
Speaker 2:Yeah, a salad, a veggie burger Fat, that's right. Extra Fat, that's right Extra.
Speaker 1:Fat. Today is fat America, the fat Fat.
Speaker 2:He got down right.
Speaker 3:Well no, no working load.
Speaker 1:Justin, thank you for your service. My man, yeah. And to all those who have served, thank you, and those who especially died. We remember you. When you eat that Fat, remember what you're doing it for. Right, here we go.
Speaker 3:Right. Anything you want to add to that, justin? No, because I'm sitting at my house in the AC, because I went to the A, went to the other day and got sunburned. I can't do shit today, all right sit back, enjoy all the uh.
Speaker 1:Maybe a pie, strawberry pie, apple pie? How about a key lime pie? That sounds good.
Speaker 3:And a Pacers Thunder final Key lime pie at public.
Speaker 1:I haven't had a key lime pie. I didn't like Not even lying. Some are better than others, but they're all good. Knicks will be on the road in game four. Oklahoma City on the road. I see Oklahoma City winning it in seven and losing all road games. I see that series could easily be like that.
Speaker 2:That ain't what you said, though.
Speaker 3:You said it, I know, I know, but that's.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I know, I know I'm just saying I could see that, but I don't, because I see Minnesota win the next four there you go.
Speaker 2:That's the heart.
Speaker 3:That's what the heart wants.
Speaker 1:The head thinks that every home team is probably going to win every game in that series and it will be Oklahoma City winning game 7 at home you mean like they just get as much rated money. We'll watch it we'll react to that and the college baseball playoffs and we'll talk to you next time right here on the North Florida Sports Network.
