Cursed Seminoles, Surging Pacers, and College Baseball Chaos

Austin Fletcher Season 3 Episode 364
Speaker 1:

all right, welcome back. How's everybody doing? It's great summer, it's hot, the north here, everybody's doing their job. We, we understand that and we're going to wind down. We're going to wrap up the baseball seasons as our teams Florida State and Miami got eliminated and the Super Regionals put a bow on that Big fucking bow. And then we have the NBA Finals are heating up right in the climax of that. Uh, we got game four tonight. We're going to talk about that. We're going to go over the series so far. It's going to be fun. We also who knows when we will talk a little recruiting. See what's going down as we're getting closer to the bottom.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's about to be the dead period. Maybe some ufc talk if we have time. But if you haven't done so, download, subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Podcast is available everywhere. So, uh, let's get started, we'll see you next time. Is that the excitement that was the air leaving the building after game one in Oklahoma City? Oof, as Halliburton did it again. As we come to you late in reactions, we're at the game one before game four and we react to the end of the Super Regionals a week later. First off, florida State went out to Corvallis Oregon State, three-time national champion. It was a good series. I guess the game one is where it was decided, as FSU blew a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the ninth.

Speaker 3:

With two outs and only one strike to go.

Speaker 1:

With one strike away. They just got, and then they were able to win game two.

Speaker 3:

You want to talk about everybody doing their jobs. Florida State baseball did their job, the same thing they've been doing for the last 35 years.

Speaker 1:

Right, I don't. That was a frustrating one, that game one.

Speaker 3:

They all are man.

Speaker 1:

They bounced back, but then they got shelled in game three.

Speaker 3:

They did. You saw your game three starter. Get his ass whooped in like the first two in the third inning.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, first inning.

Speaker 3:

Well, yeah, he didn't even last.

Speaker 1:

He scored two in that top of the first, but then that was over. They scored seven, right.

Speaker 3:

And that was it.

Speaker 1:

Yep, maybe you go to Joe Charles a little bit too soon.

Speaker 3:

There's all kinds of things you can nitpick.

Speaker 1:

Or you leave Valini in for one more. I mean when you go out there and you have to, when you go out there still in the seventh inning and you're expected to finish the game. That's a tall tale for any relief pitcher. They don't do that anymore. That's like 1970s baseball right there, yeah. Or maybe relief pitcher, they don't do that anymore. That's like 1970s baseball right there, yeah.

Speaker 3:

Or maybe even further back, and it was just like hey, you bring in the closer after the starter, the whole series, the whole super regional comes down to not having a bullpen the guy that pitched and uh on saturday, peyton prescott.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, who's now hurt? Right, he got injured in game three. Why don't you bring that guy in for a little bit, maybe an inning, and then you can have. But that's the Right, then you don't have him for game two.

Speaker 3:

That's what I'm saying, dude. It all comes down to not having a bullpen.

Speaker 1:

Well, what you did have was you had a good season. It's just something that happens consistently over and over for fsu baseball, but you know that they were. They had a really good team last year, and there wasn't the only last, last. This is the first time that not one team from the college world series made it back right in like 50 years right.

Speaker 3:

It's never happened. We'll also have to mention that, that there are only two sec teams right and there's only one.

Speaker 1:

So you have college baseball parody have all over the place. You got a team that's coach mows the lawn right in the in the outfield. That made it to the college world series. If that, if you don't have a dog in the fight, I'm sure that's got to be your team. I mean, that's just cool story. But miami, they lost to louisville, almost got almost snuck in the college world series. I'm so glad that didn't happen.

Speaker 3:

Got it one, run man god you would have been sitting.

Speaker 1:

so pretty you had to come on here in the college world series just like snuck in in the back door.

Speaker 3:

But Louisville makes it for the Louisville sneaks in in the yeah the lone representative from the ACC and so they had.

Speaker 1:

The ACC was a big loser in the super regional round. After being having the most teams in the super regionalals, they come away with just one.

Speaker 3:

Yeah it's not really surprising.

Speaker 1:

You got arkansas and lsu, the only two teams in the sec. They're going to face each other in the college world series, so right battle for the boot right. So on one side you got oregon state and louisville, and then you have arizona, arizona and coastal carolina, and then you on the other side, you have arkansas, lsu, and then you have murray state and ucla, ucla so who knows man?

Speaker 3:

and it one thing to note there. You know, three of eight coming from the west coast is kind of that's significant. It hadn't been like that the last few years, and Omaha has been dominated by the SEC.

Speaker 1:

Well, it's good to see honestly, yeah, because.

Speaker 3:

And I got to. I mean, you know, I think you grew up with teams from the West Coast, always there.

Speaker 1:

Right, you had your Stanford, your Santa Barbara.

Speaker 3:

Arizona State Pepperdine, all those teams. Fullerton, all those kind of teams.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, cal was late and I was going to throw out Cal State Fullerton. I always remembered them as a kid. They're like who the hell are these guys?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's like your baseball, because in baseball, if that's where you put all your money in, you can do something. And that's kind of what Oregon State. You can see that as being kind of like a state university, but that's their number one sport.

Speaker 3:

And they get the best players from California at Oregon State.

Speaker 1:

I mean, if you want to go, I don't see why not. If you're a baseball player, you want to go to. I mean, that's like you're the big man on campus. That's like not many places ever.

Speaker 3:

Right and the tradition. You know, in the last 30 years they've had the best facilities, the best coaches. So 30 years They've had the best facilities the best coaches.

Speaker 1:

So I would say they're probably the favorite. They're the favorite on that bracket.

Speaker 3:

And whoever comes out of.

Speaker 1:

LSU and LSU is going to be the favorite in the other bracket, so it's that's who you're going to have. It's going to be Oregon state LSU.

Speaker 3:

Personally rooting for Murray state.

Speaker 1:

Of course somebody like coastal of course just get weird with it, but you know coastal is a good team, so so is ucla, so I wouldn't be surprised if either of those two teams made it. So it'll be fun to watch. You don't really? You know, I'm kind of rooting against the big guys. In this sense, I would like to see murray state and, if not them, somebody who hadn't won in a while right at you know, dave van horn in ark, they've never won it.

Speaker 3:

Well, I can't have that. Yeah, can't have that.

Speaker 1:

If anybody's, that's Florida State's position.

Speaker 3:

That's what I'm saying.

Speaker 1:

They've been locked into that for like 30 years already. They've already got. It's fascinating. When you actually look at the College World Series appearances, they're number one by far and it's over teams that have won championships it predates.

Speaker 3:

Mike Martin, that's the thing. It went back into the late 60s and early 70s, so they've had just a ton Accursed Pretty much.

Speaker 1:

But anyway, good season, though it was fun to see some new faces.

Speaker 3:

Miles, bailey, man Miles.

Speaker 1:

Bailey, big freshman season.

Speaker 3:

He's going to play for team usa um jamie arnold yeah, player of the year arnold is and lodice farty, jamie arnold really, really got hot at the end of the year.

Speaker 1:

He really turned it up. Yeah, he'll go top five. So the program's in good shape and I like link. It's fsu baseball it'll. I mean it's almost like we got another Martin.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, it's pretty much the expectation is going to be the same. Yeah, I mean you got. If you don't make it super every year, people are going to be pissed. This is the expectation to at least get to that round For me like dude, I would take a couple of just like kind of dog shit seasons if I knew we were going to win some titles, right Like, but whatever.

Speaker 1:

Well, I mean they he's liked what. It's a shame that the injury bug hit it, but you're still getting players. They already got a guy committed.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, they got the putting them kid.

Speaker 1:

So I mean they're going to keep, keep rolling it in.

Speaker 3:

You got to keep giving it a shot. Yeah, they're going to get a freshman All-American arm, most likely from FAU, so they'll be new faces but they're still going to have a lot of their power back next year.

Speaker 1:

Is there any other sport that a program like Florida State baseball like? Is there one in basketball or football?

Speaker 3:

That has been so dominant and not won. No, yeah, the closest thing was when the Cubs couldn't win it or the Red Sox couldn't win it Well.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, but in college sports there's nothing like it, right, every team that's yeah I mean maybe Boeheim back in the day was there.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, you're right, that's a good comparison.

Speaker 1:

But you just don't see it. It seems to be that eventually you know you.

Speaker 3:

Eventually you got a breakthrough right.

Speaker 1:

Right, we'll see. There's your college baseball talk for the year. For the year, wrap it up. Well, we'll get back.

Speaker 3:

Unless Mary State wins it yeah.

Speaker 1:

We'll win the college world series.

Speaker 3:

I'm going to be too busy bitching about Mike Norvell.

Speaker 1:

Well, the NBA Finals are in. Game 4 coming up, indiana took a 2-1 series lead over OKC, which was the betting favorite, and it happens to be still the betting favorite. Okc and 7 is your most probable outcome, according to Vegas.

Speaker 2:

Oh, dude, hammer Indiana dude. That's such a good bet.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I mean you could get Indiana at plus before game three. You could get them at like plus four, something to win the series and that they had a home court advantage then, but still, I think it comes down to tonight. Whoever wins tonight will win the championship.

Speaker 2:

You love that game. Four is going to win it all I do.

Speaker 1:

I've been thinking that way since I was a kid man.

Speaker 3:

It's all about game four.

Speaker 1:

It is Because it's going to be 2-1. Somebody's going to be up 2-1. And somebody's either going to tie the series and it's usually that um team that can tie it, especially now with okc having the home court advantage. If they can get that back, they're going to win, and if indiana can go up three one with only having to win one game, they're going to win it in six, which one's more of a lock to you, though, indiana being up three, one, or the series being two, two.

Speaker 3:

What was the saying? Who's going to win tonight in six? Which one's more of a lock to you, though, indiana being up three, one, or the series being two, two what was I saying?

Speaker 1:

who's going to win tonight? Oh god, this, this is going to be an epic game. It's going to be like I'm saying if there was going to be a team, you're going to get, you're going to get okc's best tonight on the road but they're a different team on the road and they're a young team. They pull, they feed off that college atmosphere that they provide in okc. They're not going to have that. I don't think they're in a championship coach's house.

Speaker 3:

Who coached?

Speaker 2:

jj beret.

Speaker 3:

I was about to say man, I don't, I don't think the pacers give a shit about the best right and I, I, they're that.

Speaker 1:

You see, they're like halliburton their best player, he's going to the hot guy, he doesn't care. And they have more of a system in place where they're going to run it and they're going to run it no matter what, as, whereas sometimes okc you saw it in game one where at the end you're what do you get?

Speaker 3:

you get, you get your maybe this is a little bit.

Speaker 1:

Maybe this is the whistle's not going to blow at the end like that. They're not going to have that, and that's what how game one ended, and I think that that was kind of like how the series is going to be decided it. Okay, see, we'll have a chance to steal it back tonight is what I'm saying will they? Yeah, they got to do something about that indiana bench?

Speaker 2:

yeah, they. I mean they've got no answers for that indiana bench man, they did it. Game three the little guy Game was decided in the second quarter of game three dude, yep and with Obi Toppin, with Obi Toppin and freaking.

Speaker 1:

Dayton right.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, having a guy like him coming off the bench this dude at Dayton was insane.

Speaker 1:

As athletic as anybody.

Speaker 3:

That year, that COVID year, that team was for real and yeah, man he's been one of my faves for a while Anyway.

Speaker 2:

He's all gas, no brakes, dude. The way he plays man, he kind of reminds me of Birdman back on the heat, back in the day, where you bring him off the bench and he's just nonstop energy, pure energy, pure, yeah, with more offensive skills. Playing defense, grabbing rebounds, throwing down dunks, running all over the place firing up the crowd.

Speaker 3:

man Obi Toppin's fun as hell to watch man, that Dayton team was the one team I thought might beat FSU in 2020.

Speaker 1:

I just man, but they wouldn't have. This is a great story for you know, indiana, they're able to pull this off so yeah I mean just on. Nobody saw this coming.

Speaker 2:

If they're like they're the fourth best team in the east right, I mean rick carisle.

Speaker 1:

what he did now with Dallas in the West, then over the Heat, that first time with JJ Barrera and then now with Indiana, I mean this is Hall of Famer. Oh, definitely.

Speaker 2:

He's already in there, even if they don't. He's cemented.

Speaker 1:

Yeah yeah, oh yeah, he's cemented, I think so he's been a winner everywhere. He's gone and now he's.

Speaker 3:

If he goes on to win this, he's gonna have you got a guy like barrera backing for you.

Speaker 1:

Man, you, you got you, you, you establish championships in two franchises that never had it before, it's true. So there you go there you go I mean that's a statue right there in two places. If they're, where do you put the statue?

Speaker 2:

I don't know if you did it like Alabama football that's right you throw that statue at JJ Barea's house is where you put it.

Speaker 1:

That's right oh man, I'm kind of rooting for it now he's got a figurine indoors I picked. Okc, I believe, to win it. But I mean I'm, I want Indiana to pull it out. Yeah, the story's just too good.

Speaker 2:

I like the way they're playing oh, dude, it was great to see reggie miller. Uh, courtside, yeah, just going nuts for his pacers at game three man and I, you know I always loved reggie back in the day. I everybody loved jordan, I loved reggie miller well, I would just see how that it.

Speaker 1:

I remember the story like just a month or two ago and playoffs are starting, the story released about halliburton being the most overrated player on a player's poll in the league and just like there's a little like to see him kind of slap back and then I don't know, I just he's got a good attitude. I didn't complain. He was on the, he was on team usa, he didn't play, but he wasn't bitching about it at all. I mean, he's a confident guy.

Speaker 2:

He actually made a really funny tweet.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I think he's got a tweet yeah, I think he's very confident, but he's very humble in the same time and he wants to win overall and you kind of like that in a player oh, his tweet from uh, when they won the olympics.

Speaker 2:

He's got a picture of him holding his gold medal and he's like yep, when you do nothing on the group project and still get an a, that's right. I mean like that's just. That's a great attitude to have, for a professional athlete to just joke about himself, not getting any play time right.

Speaker 1:

But I mean that's, you don't mess up the winner. You know you can do that you can change your role. It's about the ultimate goal. That shows me maturity and that's a guy I want leading the team. And now he's kind of getting his you know flowers now and well, yeah, he keeps hitting game winners. But you saw it in game three he only had nine points right, he's not, he's not trying.

Speaker 2:

No, it doesn't have to be, it's whoever I mean.

Speaker 1:

Look who's the little guy, who's the guy? The spark plug off the bench, a little white dude. He calls him yeah, mcconnell takes over and it's just like, all right, let's go. Let's. I mean, that's what you need, you need. But it takes the leadership from your best player to have that attitude and he's got all of it and he can do whatever they need. He can rebound, he can assist and he can obviously hit the game winner. This is definitely a coming out party for Tyrese Halliburton. I'm gonna laugh my ass off.

Speaker 3:

Next year he's gonna be the most underrated player voted by the players. Well, yeah, he, he's already won that.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, oh god, he's already shoved that one and there's a little bit of I. Who knows what the players vote on. If that's actually more of just Hayden, maybe because of how he handles himself, who knows.

Speaker 3:

Man. I don't believe anything. That's anonymous. It's all made up by a journal. Who knows?

Speaker 1:

But it's 2-1 Pacers, they're going into game four. Like I told you, whoever wins tonight wins it all, so it's going to be a good one.

Speaker 2:

All right, what else?

Speaker 1:

we got Huh.

Speaker 2:

You got anything. You got something Anything. I got some WWF. I can talk, oh my God, or WWE.

Speaker 1:

We got to get on out of here, a ride's here, but before we go, before we go, high school recruiting hit, oh god.

Speaker 3:

It hit once. Do we have to?

Speaker 1:

No, we will.

Speaker 3:

It hit guy. It got a guy Right. Fsu actually got a guy.

Speaker 2:

That's what I was referring to Right.

Speaker 3:

I guess he's a four-star wide receiver, Brandon Bennett, out of Fort Lauderdale.

Speaker 1:

Yep.

Speaker 3:

We'll see if he actually shows up to play. All right.

Speaker 2:

I was just about to say he's going to transfer.

Speaker 1:

He'll transfer before the semester starts. Yeah, it's just totally wild wild west. They had the deal the thing with the Congress.

Speaker 3:

Right Congress. They passed a House settlement. It's already being sued and challenged. You know it was pretty lazily put together in terms of being bulletproof in court. So I think there's still a ways away from that shit happening. But whoever spends the most is going to be the best, right, right.

Speaker 1:

So I think there's still a ways away from that shit happening, but Whoever spends the most is going to be the best. Right, right. That's just bottom line. That's how you go.

Speaker 3:

But apparently Florida State is not the poorest in the conference. No, no, no, and they spent last year and they sucked Right.

Speaker 1:

So, it doesn't mean you're going to be good, so you Florida State fans out there.

Speaker 3:

you just got to worry about hiring somebody else to spend the money, and that won't be for a few years.

Speaker 1:

We'll see if Miami and Florida they spent the money. But we'll see.

Speaker 3:

I mean they got the quarterback.

Speaker 1:

It's going to be on the quarterback.

Speaker 3:

Right, same thing with Florida.

Speaker 1:

They'll both be in the conversation for the next few years, and that's how big the position is.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, it's premier.

Speaker 1:

They hit it with Cam Ward. They needed every damn throw they had with that defense. Will they get the same? I don't think he's as good as Cam Ward.

Speaker 2:

Well, he may. All you got to do is win the ACC.

Speaker 1:

So you're going to have to have a better running game and a defense. All you got to do is win the ACC, which is the worst.

Speaker 2:

Running game is not going to be a problem, dude, our backfield is stacked.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, miami's got the best offensive line in the country Top two, depending on what service you're fucking looking at Florida's number four.

Speaker 1:

Well, geez say it with some Florida's number four. Well, geez, say it with some. Just you know.

Speaker 2:

It's going to be a fun year in Tallahassee for you boys.

Speaker 3:

Right, I'm expecting some fireworks out of FAMU, you know.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, we have the AD getting arrested. All right, we'll watch the NBA Finals and we'll react to it, all of it, and we'll talk to you next time right here on the North Florida Sports Network. Bye.
