Austin Fletcher Season 4 Episode 371
Speaker 1:

The North Florida Sports Network. The North Florida Sports Network. The North Florida Sports Network. The North Florida Sports Network. All right, back again it's coming up on game week FSU Alabama. We're going to go over the game. We're going gonna go over the game. We're gonna go over the season. We gotta get Jimmy Reno's wins and losses for the 2025 losses. We'll put it on record. I'm gonna ask him. I won't give you mine. Maybe I'll give you mine at the end. We'll put it on record. I'm going to ask him. I won't give you mine. Maybe I'll give you mine at the end. We'll talk about other games, because there's a lot of big ones. This Saturday there's number one versus number two, texas Ohio State. You got Dabo playing Brian Kelly. I know I'll be interested in that one, but we're going to focus on FSU this episode Because we have to.

Speaker 1:

It's a six-win dream that was recorded not too long ago and we'll see. We'll put that down. We'll see if Jimmy Reno believes in the dream. As we go through the schedule, game by game, and predict the outcome of the 2025 season with all of the players that we have, the coaches that we have, the schedule, we'll go over it, try to tell you why and what the hell will happen. It's going to be fun. It's a dream, man. You try to feel positive, maybe not not at all no, no, no no well nfl pre-season's done great.

Speaker 1:

not really looking forward to anything in the NFL, really, except for a few players.

Speaker 2:

Hey, man Fitzgerald is the kicker in Carolina. There you go, kicker you keeps churning them out. We're going to go over the depth chart.

Speaker 1:

Figure out who some of these guys are.

Speaker 2:

I don't know anyone.

Speaker 1:

some of these guys are I don't I don't know anyone and see what the record is going to be this 2025 season. So if you haven't done so, follow the show, download, subscribe. But let's get started right there. You have a depth chart. It's been released for alabama the 2d. We'll go over it it's funny man we're gonna start with punter.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, there you go, hey, listen the last kicking specialist we had was the strength of the team out of daytona right was janikowski the punter last year and the kicker were NFL material. Yeah.

Speaker 1:

That was it.

Speaker 2:

Right.

Speaker 1:

But no, in all seriousness, we'll start with quarterback you have.

Speaker 2:

Little guy. Yeah, you knew it. I mean honestly, man, the depth chart looks exactly that's my quarterback, how I thought it would, except for the fact that you got two walk-ons on the two deep. But I guess there's been a lot of outrage online on the Twitter machine. People just, I guess, didn't really grasp just how little depth this team had until it was there on a screen in front of them.

Speaker 1:

But right, right, and then you know, you could we kind of could see that coming, but we'll go over it. Uh, you got tommy, tommy castellanos, backed up by, uh, kevin sperry or brock glenn, like how I did that yeah kevin's very first.

Speaker 1:

Well, I mean you know that's the kid they like. The one position I actually feel good about on offense is running back, where you have Roy Doe Williams back. If he can remain healthy, that's an inside type, you know running back. And then you have a Saul Chuck from out, you know, from Nebraska.

Speaker 2:

Oklahoma, oklahoma. Yeah, that's right, sorry, I mean both those guys. They're healthy.

Speaker 1:

And then you have that could be something I mean Lucas and the true freshman that I'm excited about.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

The one guy In terms of offensive skill players.

Speaker 2:

It's the two true freshmen that you could have a little bit of excitement about, boggs and Croma. Well, if Lucas can. Again if he looks like he did before he got hurt then yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1:

And then you're looking at out, at wide out. Squirrel White at one, micah Danzy. Behind him, or BJ Gibson, wide receiver of the nine, is Deuce Robinson, backed up by Gavin Blackwell or Elijah Moore. Ugh, what do you got there? It's just right there at top, and that's it.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, no confidence in. Blackwell Moore more. I have no confidence in a journeyman from unc that they had. No, no, uh right urgency to try to keep him more has apparently just continues to struggle. Um, you see more of the lack of development under Ron Dugans. With him, deuce Robinson is a good receiver. He's probably going to be in the NFL. He'll get a shot. Squirrel White, he's your burner.

Speaker 1:

But again the passing game is going to come down to up front, the offensive line Right and you've got running backs that can catch the ball, hopefully, and lucas and yeah, with pat.

Speaker 2:

I mean I look at, I look at boggs being that third receiver and that's they got guy boggs, and then there's chase, lofton, right and and lofton, and the tight ends being which?

Speaker 1:

is a tight end when you you got some some guys potential there. I mean you got the transfer, Randy Pittman getting the start.

Speaker 2:

Right. In terms of guys that have played for Gus and been productive, he's tops.

Speaker 1:

Right.

Speaker 2:

And you know that's going to be the best friend in the passing game, Right? Because, especially week one, I doubt there's going to be clean pocket many times when he's trying to drop back.

Speaker 1:

So then you got amari williams, which you've seen the upside of him, on both sides of the ball all right williams.

Speaker 2:

Little little surprise landed. Thomas seems to have slipped um, they got, or there, yeah, I, I just you know, it's all. It all comes down to the offensive line.

Speaker 1:

Man right everything and uh at left tackle, gunner hansen is your starter transfer from uh vanderbilt and he's going to be backed up by the big aussie, luc Simmons.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, big Swede, different country. Yeah, um, that that you know. Lucas Simmons actually looks like a, a power to conference offensive lineman. Um, you know it, it I'm, I'm hopeful there that maybe you get something out of both those guys.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and then and then this is where you know I think hopefully the strength will come is right there Richie Leonard, where you could see he was our best running offensive lineman, clearly last year, until he got hurt. He's at left guard, or Jacob Rizzi, and Jacob Rizzi is listed at right and left guard.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, he's kind of the Swiss Army knife on the offensive line. He could play center as well, if you need him to. So you have. That's basically your depth is Jacob Rizzi.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, andre Otto, he's still listed at two. I think this is one of the most important positions on the team this year, center Luke Pettibon in terms of Right that on the team this year Center Luke Pettibon.

Speaker 2:

That's an all ACC center.

Speaker 1:

Who you got behind him.

Speaker 2:

Right, he's got to stay healthy Right.

Speaker 1:

That's what I meant. I think this is right there with.

Speaker 2:

Tommy C and this quarterback. Yeah, that goes for your starting five, for the most part up front.

Speaker 1:

Yep, and then right guard Adrian Medley or Jacob Rizzi, and then Micah Pettis at right tackle, and Medley's listed his backup, so you pretty much got Rizzi.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, that's your depth. Yeah, so you got about six guys that you can play up front.

Speaker 1:

And then you get back into that territory of Jonathan Daniels or young guys, freshman guys, yeah, guys that don't have much experience.

Speaker 2:

Otto's played a little bit, but he's still he's raw. Yeah.

Speaker 1:

So this is going to be a thin O-line, but run the ball. Run the ball, so we talked about. And then a wide receiver too. You've got receivers, you've got, yeah, this is a. You have some guys that you've seen production, but it's all at other places. So you bring them all together and you're like, okay, maybe, but then Right, do what you did there here. But then what if something? There's no backbone, there's no depth, that's it. No depth.

Speaker 2:

You see it in the NFL and the way teams construct their rosters. When you get injuries, season is shot.

Speaker 1:

It's that fine of a line that we're talking about we're going to get to wins and losses, but going off this depth chart on the offense, I like it. If you just look at the starters, I think this offense is going to be just looked like a damn different animal. I mean, it was so bad last year, right, I think that we're going to have. At least we're going to score.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I think this team's going to score some points. Yeah, what you saw last year was the worst unit in football being the offensive line.

Speaker 1:

It was so bad it just got you into this lull With a quarterback.

Speaker 2:

That was probably. You could not have constructed a worse fit right for, so I like what they did and they went and just tried to just do do something.

Speaker 1:

And we're going to do it really good. We're gonna get guys that we want and we're gonna try to run the freaking ball yeah, try to get some big ass linemen, hopefully get a quarterback that can run, get a bunch of running backs, get some wide receivers. Maybe we can do a play action and then get behind the defense.

Speaker 2:

Keep the clock ticking, let's get through this season.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, but it's going to be staying healthy on both sides of the ball. Let's go to the defense, where you have first-year defensive coordinator Tony White From Nebraska. I've talked to him a couple times, you know he didn't let me really know what he was thinking. It was kind of before practice. Yeah, I just I mean, it's a tough situation Right, but we'll see who he's going to go with here, and he's going to start James Williams, this guy from Nebraska, at defensive end.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I mean, that's probably your best pure pass rusher.

Speaker 1:

He's backed up by Jaden Jones.

Speaker 2:

Right, a guy that's been injured his whole career essentially, but has really apparently looked pretty good now that he's healthy. I mean, it's a kid that was supposed to be, you know, one of those diamond in the rough types three or four years ago when they signed him but couldn't stay healthy. So we'll see there. It would be huge if he could give you anything coming off the edge. That would be and you also see Amari Williams at defensive end as well.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, yeah, okay, all right, so we got D-tackle. Daryl Jackson back.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, that was a given.

Speaker 1:

There's your size on the defense.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and Lyons is a kid that I mean, there's talent there, it's just consistency. The guy that's a little disappointing is KJ Sampson. You know this is a blue-chip recruit. They signed out of North Carolina and it just really has not come on yeah so that's disappointing to me that he's not even on the two deep. We'll see if it's motivational or if it's just that he's a guy that's just not going to ever give you anything.

Speaker 1:

Sucks. Yeah, the other. Well, you know this is a 3-3-5, so you forget, you got Daryl Jackson and like the nose guard. Yeah, yeah, and his backup. You know this is a 3-3-5, so you forget, you got Daryl Jackson and like the nose guard.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah, and his backup when healthy is probably going to be Kevin Wynn.

Speaker 1:

When healthy, okay. So then you got two ends. And the other end is Jason Jenkins Tennessee transfer, and he's backed up by Deontay McRae.

Speaker 2:

Right, the defensive line. I mean I think they'll be formidable, but again they're not very deep. You know people are freaking out about the weights it is. I mean you don't have a bunch of 300-plus pounders up front with this D-line, so it's not going to. You know it's going to look a little bit different than what you've been used to at Florida State, but I don't think that's the real alarming part of the defense. Where I start to really get scared is in the linebacker situation.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and that's where we're going to go next, elijah Herring.

Speaker 2:

Right, you know you got. I mean the guys that are journeymen. You know he's on his third school. Oh boy, he's played a bunch of football. Where did he play last he was at Memphis and Tennessee. Before that. You hope you just get something there.

Speaker 1:

Man, just solid play, because his backup is none other than.

Speaker 2:

AJ Cottrell. Yeah, former walk-on. Yeah, I'm telling you like, apparently the kid's been. You know he's a technician and makes plays and that's great man. I don't want to knock the kid and if he's played his way into you know the two deep, then good for him. But it's just. I mean, dude, it's a walk-on.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

On the two deep and at a position like linebacker. Yeah.

Speaker 1:

The other linebacker, Justin Cryer and Blake Nicholson. Instagram Blake. I got no confidence in him.

Speaker 2:

No.

Speaker 1:

I mean, I'm not saying he's, I'm sure he's a great kid.

Speaker 2:

No, well, you know, I just don't think he can play at this level. Yeah, there's a lot of having to get the bad taste out of your mouth from last year with a lot of these players.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Linebacker position especially.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's just been. You had a flash with a few guys that took a while to mature and get good and that was Deloach.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1:

But that was just a rare season and what's been? Just a graveyard, just like nothing. They haven't had nothing. They haven't had anything in linebacker.

Speaker 2:

It's what telvin smith yeah, yeah, I mean, you know, the northrop days reggie was kind of good, I mean it, I don't know. Justin cryer, omar, graham, all right. So omar graham's gonna be at the jack right, which will be a pass rush linebacker hybrid.

Speaker 1:

Backed up by Stephon Thompson.

Speaker 2:

Another transfer from Nebraska. I mean I'm just hoping that they can be solid Cornerback. You got Jeremiah Wilson, which is, I mean you got a stud on defense. That's probably going to be your guy, at least on paper. He doesn't lack confidence at all.

Speaker 1:

Real Rawls will be at the other side.

Speaker 2:

And he's again. In terms of high school recruiting and development, you know, in-home, in-house, the secondary is really the only spot that they've done anything Right because Charles Lester's still.

Speaker 1:

he's your backup, that's a highly touted recruit. Right, it's time to play.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah, it wouldn't shock me to see him. So you don't mind, you think the corners. I think the corners are probably the strength of the team. Shamar Arnaud and a true freshman who is done. You know he was highly recruited out of high school I like that.

Speaker 1:

If you got a guy that can play, to play him yeah especially there's no reason not to.

Speaker 2:

There's nobody. Nobody earned playing time from last season, right um you know the safety, safety edwin joseph, big fan, edwin Joseph. Big fan of his.

Speaker 1:

Backed up by KJ Kirkland.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, another guy that apparently has just worked his way up.

Speaker 1:

And Earl Little Jr at Rover.

Speaker 2:

There's the big if right. There Is if this kid is finally going to live up to his name yeah and what he was supposed to be coming out of you, we need him.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, this is a guy you need. His backup is none other than the donnie a bear know who the fuck this kid is man I?

Speaker 2:

I just, oh, good God, oh, donnie man, yeah, I mean, at least Kyler Hall was a scholarship player and I'm not again not knocking a walk-on. That's earned playing time, apparently. But to me, this right here is only because Conrad Hussey decided he was going to haul off and swing on the safeties coach.

Speaker 1:

Yeah. And then you have the other, the boundary as land Ashland, baker, barker, sorry, yeah. When then backed up by Shaheen Brown.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, Two kids that are, that I mean to me are just kind of disappointing for different reasons. Yeah, shaheen has just played himself, see him back. Yeah, nowhere to be found, right I, I mean again, um, if they had more depth back there, I wonder if he'd still be on the team.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, uh and then um, your kicker is going to be Jake Weinberg.

Speaker 2:

Kid's got a big leg, apparently it's you know. So, again, the strength of your team may be the kicking game, but I mean that's. And then the punter, max Chiamotto, yeah.

Speaker 1:

Chiamotto, daytona Beach and Mason Arnold is your snapper.

Speaker 2:

There we go, man, that's the squad.

Speaker 1:

Okay. Well, there's your two deep for 2025. Without further ado, let's get into the wins and the losses for this 2025 season from Jimmy Reno, and it starts Saturday.

Speaker 2:

Saturday, 3.30 pm.

Speaker 1:

Goddamn battered shit. They're playing Alabama right here at Doak, the newly renovated Doak Campbell Stadium.

Speaker 2:

Freshly sodded, unveiled 330. Going to be rainy Humid.

Speaker 1:

Alabama is a 13.5 point favorite.

Speaker 2:

I think they will cover it. My optimistic everything's not as bad as it seems. Maybe 27-16 Alabama, so loss.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, 0-1 on the season 27-16.

Speaker 2:

And that's if Alabama is stepping on their dicks and we're kind of surprised you got the running back and the guard, that's out.

Speaker 1:

But that it's the first game of the year. It's freaking alabama. I mean this is a team that's hadn't they were they had. They've recruited well every year, yeah you're talking about it.

Speaker 2:

They have backups at every position. 12 of the 17 years that Saban was there, they signed the number one class in the country.

Speaker 1:

So this is just the depth that they're going to bring in. Here is what has me not believing that the FSU can pull it off, so 0-1,. Jimmy Reno has them. Not believing that the fsu can pull it off, so oh and one. Jimmy reno has him, but it doesn't sound like a two. I mean, you never know. You know you're gonna hope for a victory. You know maybe get some turnovers. You got a new quarterback, you know yeah, he's new, great.

Speaker 2:

I just don't want anybody to get hurt. You know you got the entire season, especially up front on the offensive line. I mean that has the potential If you stay healthy. You're talking about a three or four game swing right there.

Speaker 1:

Well, alabama's got dudes on defense A lot of them and we'll see if we can right there. Well, alabama's got dudes on defense a lot of them, and we'll see if we can run through it. Yeah, okay, it's going to be a win against east texas a&m. It's going to be a win against kent state. Right, there's your two wins. Right, we're two and one. If, if either one of those to be a win against Kent State. Right, there's your two wins. Right, we're two and one.

Speaker 2:

If either one of those isn't a win, then you might as well just go ahead and cut the cord. All right, so you're two and one Give. Gus the interim tag, right then.

Speaker 1:

You're two and one You're going to Virginia. Yeah, I know that this is the big game, that this is the first test of the year that I think that you have to pass. Oh, without question, this is the one where you can win and you need to win.

Speaker 2:

Right, this is where the tune out and quit factor for some of the kids that are still on the team. This is where it will rear its head if you manage to go up to Charlottesville and lose this game. If we're healthy, I think they can win it. Okay, I think Virginia is a team that's a roster. The injuries they've already faced in their preseason, I think they can go up there and win Well, and if you're coming off two wins.

Speaker 1:

If you stay relatively healthy, you didn't lose bad against Alabama.

Speaker 2:

Even at this point, even if you do get your ass kicked against Alabama, if you're healthy, you're two games removed from that. You've had a bye week in between those two games, right.

Speaker 1:

So this is going to be the fight. Acc opener yeah, you got them winning three and one and then it's back home against Miami To lose. Miami's just got too much on the offensive line, Right In particular.

Speaker 2:

They're going to just plow the road, cross both lines, both skills. There are games that you're not going to win just because of what your roster is particular. They're gonna just cross both both lines, both skill. I mean it.

Speaker 1:

You know, there are games that you're not going to win just because of this is where crystal ball has put himself ahead of norvell in particular, and that's recruiting yeah, well, yeah, I mean he, he did that in year one, I know, and I'm just saying he, you had the portal with some special players and you could compete, but now you can't.

Speaker 2:

No, We'll get into that at the end of the season thing here.

Speaker 1:

All right. So three and two a loss to the rival Miami, then you're back at home against Pitt. Here's another game. And then you got your back at home against Pitt.

Speaker 2:

Here's another game. It's going to be really tough to win because of the depth on both lines.

Speaker 1:

After a loss against your rival Right. Where's the buy-in? This is where the transfers. What are they looking at? Why are they going to care?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and this is the game. Are you going to be able to keep holding up health-wise? Are you going to be fully healthy going into that game? After a road game against virginia, after a game against miami? Are you going to be limping in there with some people out, very, I mean, you know, pit isn't a, they're not a dominant team or anything, but they got enough to be able to beat you and I'm chalking it up to an L. All right, so that's 3-3.

Speaker 1:

And then they're going out to play Stanford. Right Stanford's awful, there you go, 4-3.

Speaker 2:

You can win. That's another game If you lose to Frank Reich, an interim head coach who has no. I mean, stanford is awful yeah.

Speaker 1:

You lose that game again.

Speaker 2:

That's a just go ahead and cut the fucking cord, man.

Speaker 1:

All right, so now you're four and three and you're coming home to play weight. You cannot lose the weight, so that's five and three. Yeah, you got them five and three, and then you're going to go on the road to Clemson. That's a guaranteed loss Five and four. Okay, so this is a huge game. You're coming back home. You're five and four. You got Virginia Tech coming in.

Speaker 2:

And this is it?

Speaker 1:

This is the game.

Speaker 2:

This is the swing game. Yep, you know Virginia Tech has they've got drones at quarterback and that's it. You know they've recruited horribly. They have first-year coordinators that have you know, never done this shit before at the college level. They are a program that has very little financial support. You know I'm talking like not even you know they struggle to have a support staff in place. Like you have to win that game. It's inexcusable.

Speaker 1:

Not six and four yeah, the six one dream is accomplished, that yeah, there you go this is. This is so. All right then then let's keep it. Then you're on the road to nc state yeah, you're in raleigh on a friday night. You're not winning that game okay, six and five, and then finish off at florida when you're not winning, you're not being six and six jimmy re 500.

Speaker 2:

Off to a bowl game, so you go back to it and you look at a game like Pitt.

Speaker 1:

I look at Pitt If we're healthy yeah.

Speaker 2:

If we're healthy going into Pitt, there's no reason why you might not be able to pull that one out All of a sudden. Maybe seven and five is doable, okay. But on the flip side, if you're beat to shit and you lose the pit and let's say something fucking crazy happens and you lose the Virginia Tech.

Speaker 1:

No, I got it Something about this week, man, it's not going to happen. No, but if it were, no.

Speaker 1:

If it did, telling me there's a chance. No, it's not going to happen. Florida State's going to be 0-1. I got them losing to Alabama, then they're going to win. I got them 2-1. I got them beating Virginia too. I got them fighting against Miami and putting, but it's just not going to be enough. Miami's going to be able to control the line of scrimmage and be able to. I think they're going to fight. I think it's going to be competitive, though it's a rivalry game. I don't think it'll be a blowout. And then, like you said, that pick game. This is where. Earn that check man yeah earn that check.

Speaker 1:

I mean, I want to see what you can do. I want to see if you can keep this team together after a loss to a tough loss to a rival, after you know, if you win that virginia game though you that's the key. And then you can beat pit. I got them beating pit right, and then I got them. You can beat Pitt. I got them beating Pitt Right, and then I got them beating Stanford, and then I got them beating Wake. So that's one, two, three, four, five, six and two. I have it. This is the peak. And then it's off to Clemson. Six and three. And then, if they can get this win against Virginia Tech, that's seven and three.

Speaker 1:

And then they're gonna break the curse man, they're gonna go beat NC State yeah and they're gonna be eight and three, yeah, and then they're gonna go down to to the swamp and probably lose that game. It'll be close again. I think they're going to give their rivals, miami and Florida, tough games. I don't know about Clemson, but no, clemson, dude. Eight and four, that is a dream season, yeah, and you just and the chances. When I look at it, that's very optimistic. I think there's certain games that we don't have a chance of winning, like alabama, miami, florida and clemson, and I have us winning every other game well I mean that just goes off to the, you know the roster right.

Speaker 1:

So the games that, so you better win those games. Yeah, that's all I'm saying is like, win those games and I think they can, but that that's with health, that's with morale, that's with everybody's yeah your health is gonna have to be, and that's, and then chances of that you know, and you could get an upset I think if there's a chance at an upset, maybe you could get Miami. Maybe you could sneak off and beat Alabama in this opener. No, that's not.

Speaker 2:

Or get Florida at the end of the year with Florida at the end of the year If Lagway is not playing right. And they don't really have anything to play for. But it all comes down to what you look like in game 12, who you have planned in game 12, who you have playing. But well, you're in year six and you got two walk-ons in that team.

Speaker 1:

Well, that's the bigger issue. Yeah, so six wins keeps his job.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I think he'd have to do a repeat of last season to lose his job.

Speaker 1:

Just can't afford it, that's why I said 6-1 dream, but I think if you don't go to a bowl game, I think they should fire him.

Speaker 2:

They should have fired him last year.

Speaker 1:

Well, they just signed him, I know, so that wasn't going to happen. I know, well, they just signed him.

Speaker 2:

I know, I know, so that wasn't going to happen. I know, so I'm just trying to, if you go 5-7. If you go from 2-10 and you make changes, and you go 5-7 and don't go to a bowl, you've still more than doubled your win total.

Speaker 1:

I don't give a shit.

Speaker 2:

Oh yeah, none of the fans are going to give a shit, but it's going to be a lot easier for him to justify not doing it.

Speaker 1:

I think if you do go 5-7, it depends on how you play. And I think if you look at certain games, like you said, the Alabama I mean if you were to lose a hard-fought game 30-27, you know, and you lose some tough games, but you can see, fight.

Speaker 2:

The optics of the alabama game are just not gonna matter, like it doesn't matter to anybody except the fans right, the sec's already made themselves they're gonna play nine games.

Speaker 1:

Right, they're canceling out everybody. Big tens at nine games. The acc's like now we like nah, we'll stay at eight.

Speaker 2:
