The Miami-FSU Power Shift: Week One College Football Reactions

Austin Fletcher Season 4 Episode 373
Speaker 1:

Yes, right, the North Florida Sports Network Football Monday.

Speaker 2:

Football.

Speaker 1:

Yes, right, it is just another Football Monday, first one of the 2025 season. We got Miami contributor Justin with us. We got Jimmy Reno with us, both happy as clams.

Speaker 2:

Beautiful day Big wins. Beautiful God.

Speaker 1:

it's always great to beat up on those Catholics yeah, miami coming off the big win over Notre Dame last night. We reacted to the FSU victory over Alabama right after that game. First reaction to what was your initial thought watching the game, justin, miami game. Yeah, offensive line best in the country.

Speaker 2:

What was your initial thought watching the game, justin Miami game yeah, offensive line best in the country they knew. The Canes absolutely mauled Notre Dame up front Dude. That offensive line is awesome and the defense leaps and bounds better than they were last year. I mean they actually tackled people.

Speaker 3:

So physically, yeah, that was my reaction. First and foremost. It was like dude Miami's better on both fronts offensive and defense than Notre Dame, just physically dominated them.

Speaker 2:

Really did dude. Reuben Bain looked great. I love that interception. He got off of the tip ball that our guy kicked up, and then Reuben Bain got the pick. That was great. And then, oh my God, the CJ Daniels catch.

Speaker 1:

Oh, that was incredible. I did see that. The highlight of that let's go over the numbers from miami um carson beck 20 of 31, 205, two touchdowns, zero picks, which is what you want to see when you have that kind of o-line. Just don't screw it up, yep. And then you had, uh, shared, you had shared carries here. You had Fletcher with 15 for 66. Then you had Brown, 15 for 54 and a touchdown. So we're able to get you know, grind for about four yards of carry between those two guys alone.

Speaker 2:

The other guy, lyle, looked really good too. Yeah, I was curious why he didn't get as many carries, because Lyle can fly.

Speaker 1:

CJ Daniels had five catches for 46 yards and a touchdown, as Tony had six catches, 82 yards and a touchdown Tony is. He looks good.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah, he's the real deal, dude.

Speaker 3:

The websites that had him as a three-star coming out of high school. That just goes to show you they don't know shit. Well, they can, they don't know anything.

Speaker 1:

They can. You can see what Cristobal has done on the lines. He's recruited well, and then they've added skill positions in the portal and yeah, and that that's what you saw Roster construction yeah. I mean what you saw, roster construction, yeah, I mean you saw them physically dominant and then we'll see if those decisions as you know, the important positions like quarterback, receiver, running back, and we'll see if they can, you know.

Speaker 3:

I mean, after just week one they got to be top of the power rankings in the ACC.

Speaker 1:

Oh yeah, definitely, especially with Clemson going down to LSU 17-10. Clemson can't run the ball, you know they.

Speaker 2:

Hey Austin, who told you Kade Klobnik sucked? No, I know, I called it.

Speaker 1:

Well, when you're one-dimensional and you take away his legs as well, he didn't look nearly as good.

Speaker 3:

No more one-tree hill to just beat to death.

Speaker 1:

Clemson looked vulnerable. Their defense is still really good, but LSU was able to get the win there.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, I mean it's power shift Right.

Speaker 1:

Florida State. Miami is looking like a classic game. It only took what? 20 years in the ACC, honestly?

Speaker 2:

It only took Miami 20 years to make that power shift in the ACC. Well, I think.

Speaker 1:

Miami looks the most complete and it's because of the lines and, you know, with Clemson's lack of able to run the ball, it really kind of put a hole in their offense. So, miami, you know, with the improvement on defense.

Speaker 3:

so Miami, you know, with the improvement on defense, yeah, which, which was what you were looking to see in it. Like the question mark if, if Miami and FSU isn't a battle of undefeated teams, it's looking like disappointed.

Speaker 1:

I mean it's looking like it. Barring any upsets, both teams will be favored until they get to Tallahassee to face each other.

Speaker 2:

Dude Miami's got that sneaky game against USF. Dude, USF has got a nice little squad this year. Man, yeah, it's one of those sneaky games you got to work on that. I worry about.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I know, but when you have the type of lines that they have, they just emball you yeah. And they have a quarterback. That's going. He's only going to get better. I mean he's only going to get better. I mean he's only going to get time to throw. The running game is going to. People are going to try to stop the run Right.

Speaker 3:

Well, with that kind of running game you only got to do so much. You have to try to stop the run against Monday.

Speaker 1:

So he's going to have windows to throw the ball.

Speaker 3:

He's not going to have to do what Cam Ward did.

Speaker 1:

No he war, did no he. Just what he has to do is just deliver yep when it, when it counts yep, but it won't be as hard, he won't have to like do it. It'll be different than the wide open. It's a different team, I think, a better actually chance to go further yeah that, oh, yeah no they, they look like.

Speaker 2:

They look like for sure a playoff team after that game last night. They look like a top five playoff team in the country.

Speaker 1:

All right. Well, you saw Ohio State take care of business in a 14-7 win over Texas. Yeah.

Speaker 3:

Their defense looked that game was boring, as hell.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it really was. It was just like a scrimmage against one-on-one.

Speaker 3:

You don't really know what either team has after it.

Speaker 1:

Arch Manning played really bad. He came on at the end, but your first start on the road, I wouldn't take anything away from it really. I mean I still think Texas can have a good year in terms of losses.

Speaker 2:

I mean you're going against a loaded defense at Ohio State and you have Matt Patricia as the defensive coordinator man.

Speaker 1:

So Ohio State's going to be your number one.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, they'll be your top. Georgia or Penn State will be two.

Speaker 1:

Georgia and Miami will be right up there.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, lsu, you got to will be right up there. Yeah, lsu, you got to get LSU up there, man. They got a lot of them.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you're right. I think LSU now will be top of the SEC.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

Georgia, Georgia.

Speaker 3:

LSU Georgia and LSU.

Speaker 1:

Looks like they're going to be the top of the SEC. We'll see. You know, watch out for South Carolina. They got the win over Vatek.

Speaker 3:

That was an ugly game? Yeah, it was.

Speaker 1:

And then you have some. What other game we got Belichick tonight.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, oh God, big belly. I mean really like just not a whole lot after the few games. I mean you know, you saw, I know Alabama still has a lot of good talent on paper but they just got their asses kicked. I have a hard time seeing them rebounding and contending for the SEC. I think the problems with Alabamaabama are a little bit deeper than, say, for texas or for notre dame, who you know played just a great team, because it's one game, I'm not going to go there yet.

Speaker 1:

And then, and if it does, they're just going to fire the coach right, well, they're already there.

Speaker 3:

Their fan base is already there.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's one game.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

It's one game I would take. You know they weren't ready for the smash mouth running game that Florida State brought and it's what we said. We said Florida State's the most. You don't really know what you're getting and if you think they're going to be good you take all the bets you can get now because you're going to get the best odds you can get.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, like it was plus 425, but they for them to win that game the way that they, the way they won, pushed around. Yeah and I there's going to be other teams on that schedule that can easily bring that physicality.

Speaker 1:

Not everybody's going to be playing in an opener like that. I'm hoping that FSU's made the changes and it can be a problem With the running game. It's the right medicine as far as turning it around quick. The quarterback that can run it a guy that can call the plays.

Speaker 3:

They're better than last year. You're going to smash mouth.

Speaker 1:

There's eye candy everywhere. You saw the big plays in the passing game straight off the running game. When he gets it humming he can put up points with anybody.

Speaker 3:

What surprised me the most was how bad Alabama's offensive line looked.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, the defense was the best, the biggest surprise, the best thing of all time, I'm sure. Justin agrees when he talks about Miami, even though your O-line is great, you probably are most happy about the defensive improvements.

Speaker 2:

Oh, absolutely, man. I mean that was the biggest thing. We knew the O-line was going to be great. I mean, cristobal, he can recruit and he can coach the offensive line we know he can do that but the defense, the much-improved defense, is the biggest thing, man, by far. I mean getting like critical stops, being able to just tackle the guy, force a turnover here and there. You know, I mean it was a really strong defensive performance. And I had a buddy that was down at the game.

Speaker 1:

Um, he sent a, sent me a video dude, and it was like shaking in that stadium yes yeah that's what you want to see and that's miami's last top 10 win was against the same team. What eight years ago?

Speaker 3:

right, but this is different. This is different than a brian kelly notre dame team. You know this was all offseason. You know people have been hyping notre dame up as you know, maybe the most physical team in football and they got pushed around yeah, they.

Speaker 3:

They got pushed around from the beginning to end and I do like cj car. Like I said, I mean that that kid's gonna be a good quarterback. Yeah, he definitely is. He impressed me much more than Ty Simpson, a guy that's just been sitting there waiting his time. That's the biggest difference to me.

Speaker 2:

I would say CJ Carr might have been the most impressive of the new starters at the big top ten schools, because the kid at Ohio State didn't look, you know, he just didn't look as bad as arch manning, right. But cj car, there's definitely something there, man how much unknown is there, especially this year?

Speaker 1:

this year is gonna, could be, has potential to be crazy yeah, I mean. You just don't know, from year to year, with the way you can flip it, it can be different every single year. Yep and Clemson and Alabama have potential to have what we experienced last year.

Speaker 3:

Oh yeah, oh yeah.

Speaker 1:

The thing with Alabama is the way that it snowballs Somebody this year is going to have one of those seasons that FSU had.

Speaker 3:

It's the way that the outside pressure just intensifies week by week. You could see that happening.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you could see them going 3-8 or 3-9.

Speaker 3:

Everything, nothing but being critical of everything in Tuscaloosa. Right now Every player interview is being met with a bunch of negative and it just reminds me a lot of last season here in Tallahassee Week by week. It just fell apart quick.

Speaker 1:

It can snowball, so that's it can be. You really don't know what to expect in terms of the power teams. I'm sure the rankings will reflect as much. As far as the ACC goes, I have much more confidence in Florida State based on what I saw.

Speaker 3:

Right, I mean, I thought Miami.

Speaker 1:

I had Miami in the championship. I had them right up there. I mean I just put them from two maybe to one right now, based on week one. I had them right up there. I mean I just put them from two maybe to one right now, based on week one. I have them bumping ahead of Clemson. But Florida State I have in the top five of the conference.

Speaker 3:

Well, and just looking at the schedule and the teams, the games like Pitt Pitt all of a sudden now.

Speaker 1:

When you have an identity and you have a confident, you have confidence it can, yeah, really do something, and you saw fsu.

Speaker 3:

They're gonna like the depth is gonna have you just yes, you can't afford injury.

Speaker 1:

Yes, but those guys played lights out.

Speaker 3:

Uh, little on defense was a difference maker yeah, I mean that that guy was out there just wrecking people for Alabama man.

Speaker 1:

I mean, I've watched it again. The physicality is what stood out to me and just it's like we know who we are and we're going to get you. I mean, they're going to lose some games.

Speaker 3:

Right, I feel better about making a bowl this year, though. Definitely yeah, oh oh, that's the.

Speaker 1:

That's the floor right, that's the new floor you.

Speaker 2:

It was the goal. Yeah, it's not a two, and ten football team no, I think.

Speaker 1:

I think the expectations are going to go up a lot higher when they should. Yeah, and with the money that you see you saw how much those eight suites are yeah I saw that there's eight of them.

Speaker 3:

You gotta have five mil up front 90k a season I just get this like beverly hillbillies thing just starts playing in my head, this tallahassee man, five mil, what?

Speaker 1:

I only have eight of them, so I guarantee you they'll sell them. It's about six too many Shit. I know they're really nice. You guys want to try to see if we can get a sponsor.

Speaker 3:

Hit that Powerball man. How much does Chili go you?

Speaker 1:

Oh man, we got NFL getting ready. We got a fantasy draft. After this that we got um, I'm, I'm excited yeah nfl. Um, I'm so happy after saturday having your team in it with just a different.

Speaker 3:

There's a different feeling yeah, I, I'm still just kind of shocked man, just stunned, but I say it was going to be that if we won it would have been the biggest upset of the season in week one. I'm gonna walk that back a little bit, but it feels like that it we'll see how the season plays out.

Speaker 1:

I mean, we'll see how good florida state is and we'll see how the season plays out. I mean we'll see how good Florida state is and we'll see how bad. Alabama is, or vice versa, and I think I think Miami is undefeated and if they lose it, I think they should be favored. They're going to be favored in every game.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

They're playing. Yeah, having the.

Speaker 2:

Gators at home. Having the Gators at home is nice.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, every game that it Having the Gators at home is nice. Yeah, every game. This is Miami. He's got it rolling and right now they look like the team to beat and they'd have to lose what two games at least to not make it.

Speaker 3:

So they can afford to slip up once. Right, it depends on where those losses are. If they're out of conference, it's not going to matter.

Speaker 1:

Well, that's what's so big about getting those week one games that you've been thinking about against top ten teams. It just puts you on the right path. It changes the locker room. I mean, geez man, that Miami-Florida State game is going to be crazy.

Speaker 3:

It's going to be.

Speaker 1:

It's going to be like it always is. We know it always is be.

Speaker 3:

It's gonna be like it always is right, we know it's gonna be as intense a game, an atmosphere, though, since jesus that I don't know maybe since james winston team yeah

Speaker 1:

yeah uh, it was good to see the fans showed up. Um, both places were rocking renovations and everything. It looked pretty good. Honestly, and if it's to get money to get players, that's what you got to do. Hey just keep winning. Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 3:

Winning gets people in the seats. Man it does.

Speaker 1:

Who's on. So you're happy about the defense, the running game for miami. Is there anything after monday that has you a little concerned, justin?

Speaker 2:

actually no no. I got no concerns right now. I mean we just beat Notre Dame, you know the defense being improved, the offensive line as dominant as I thought. Yeah, I mean we got Cam, not Cam Carson. Beck's got weapons all over the field and he's got all day to throw it. I mean it's just going to be whether when Chris the ball screws us Right With some of his stupid conservative bullshit play calling.

Speaker 1:

Yep, when he went like the.

Speaker 2:

I mean he tried to do it. He tried to do it last night. I mean we're up two touchdowns going into the fourth and we needed a last minute field goal to win yeah dude, it's like watching Dave Wanstead he does like to shit.

Speaker 1:

Yes, oh man.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I mean, that's my biggest concern and shit, I've been saying it ever since we hired him. My biggest concern is his game day coaching.

Speaker 1:

A little late on the Wanstead laugh.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, you gotta fire that producer.

Speaker 2:

But I mean, that's my biggest concern. Yeah, it's Cristobal. My concern, when we first brought him in dude, is his game day coaching and he's just being too conservative.

Speaker 1:

Okay, I ask you, Jimmy, the same question about FSU, Although I don't know how you're going to react, especially we were 2-10 last year.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, man, everything's got to be roses right now. Yeah, we just beat Alabama.

Speaker 1:

Right and the way you played Like. I said Linebacker was the biggest surprise for me yeah. Everybody played with. They knew what their job was.

Speaker 3:

I mean we had, you had freshman defensive linemen out there, you know, hanging with these five stars that have been fed the Bama table for the last four years. Yeah, you know, I'll get mad when we lose. When that time comes, then I'll start picking at it. But I mean, I guess, if there's a concern, it's just depth and staying healthy.

Speaker 1:

But screw that. I mean, I like the fight. Yeah, you could see if someone they're going to make teams drive, I think, down the field and you're going to have to do that over again. And I liked that approach because even if you score, it's like all right, well, that took up a lot of time. Yeah, we can answer it.

Speaker 3:

I I'm pleased. Week one I'm pleased with the coordinator hires, oh, yeah. All thumbs up.

Speaker 1:

It looked like I mean that team up in South Bend last year. It's just complete opposite. Yeah, I got it. I mean this is exhibit A as to what the transfer portal in this new NIL Look at no further than right in our backyard 2023-24, and then what you've already seen signs have definitely improved 2025. 18 transfers on the two deep Right. So I mean this is I mean you've got to roll with it.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

That's what I said. I was like you don't. I mean you've got to go out every season and try to maximize.

Speaker 3:

Well, when you can't yeah, when you can't recruit high school, you've got to just do it like that.

Speaker 1:

But you see the freshman in Cromwell, they went and got him that was a good pick.

Speaker 3:

Get a couple little freshmen in there, sprinkle them in. Hey Beat Alabama man yeah.

Speaker 2:

What I noticed the most dude is that the kids had passion again. Yeah, like they really gave a shit and like toward the end of last season, I mean, it just felt like they didn't give a shit.

Speaker 1:

Right, and I think that comes from the coaching changes. I think one thing in particular that's really I think it can be a really good thing for Norvell is that can be his kind of job. Yeah. Is what you just said, Justin, is you're just patrolled, watching every player and making sure he's given every, every bit of effort because you have coaches that you can rely on. Now, Right, and then you don't have to worry about. And this is a guy that's who he is.

Speaker 3:

Who's hired? He's just a motivator, yeah.

Speaker 1:

So he can go, be, be ready to make those kind of calls, you know, on the sideline, but we'll see if he can get. I mean, that's not guaranteed. I mean that's what Cristobal does and he's gotten in his own head.

Speaker 3:

Oh yeah, mike's got plenty of history of doing dumb shit.

Speaker 1:

So it's almost like I mean, when you take everything back, you're almost like I got to make a decision here.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, he just needs to to do what Brett Key does Sit there and think about your Waffle House order during the game. Let your coordinators coach.

Speaker 1:

It was good to see Well both teams looking good after week one. We got NFL picks coming up this Thursday. I'm ready, we'll have an over-under on each team when we do those picks. All right, I did promise that.

Speaker 2:

What else?

Speaker 3:

Oh my God, You're promising shit.

Speaker 1:

Promising we had to go. Uh-oh, we got to get on out of here. We got to shuttle, but shut up Before we go. I'm actually pretty excited for the NFL season and the fantasy season. It's wide open.

Speaker 3:

Yeah. I mean with injuries and I don't know, man, that Taylor Swift, travis Kelsey wedding during the Super Bowl, thinking it's scripted, it's going to be a hell of a halftime show man. Right, he's playing in the Super Bowl, she's performing, they're going to get married at halftime.

Speaker 1:

Mike McDaniel is the most likeliest coach to be fired. Next Is he. Yeah, Shit.

Speaker 3:

I'd take him back to San Francisco. Sounds about right.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that would be nice, Get the band back together.

Speaker 3:

We all got ball Bob back. We might as well just get old oh.

Speaker 2:

God, just give them. Kyle, you need to fire the owner.

Speaker 1:

I'm going to fire the owner? Yeah, you need to fire. I mean, the problem in Miami is the same as it is in Dallas. It's not as like, just not as right front and center as you can see. You know, but they're not winning.

Speaker 3:

No. As long as those guys are in charge, no.

Speaker 1:

Jerry is just a moron. He's a great businessman, sure I mean that's what we all keep hearing. Yeah, I don't care about the money, I just want to win. I just want to win.

Speaker 3:

But he just never does. He goes in his office.

Speaker 1:

God, I don't really care about the money. I'll just keep paying Dak, though I love Dak, he keeps me guaranteed not to be the best, they might as well just fold.

Speaker 3:

I agree.

Speaker 1:

There's no point.

Speaker 3:

No, there isn't. If I was Dak, I'd fake an injury. It's like you know what Quad hurts.

Speaker 1:

No way Washington wins as many games as they win. They're coming back. That's my pick. They're coming back to the pack. I think the Giants are going to surprise some people. I know their schedule is really bad.

Speaker 3:

My big prediction is somebody figures out how to stop the brotherly shove.

Speaker 2:

Some defensive coordinator finally tries my idea of throwing seven fat pieces of fat out there, all right. Well, hey, ohio state figured out how to stop it when arch manning tried it. We'll see, that's what jaylen hurts.

Speaker 1:

Maybe he can squat 500 pounds. You gotta give him some credit. Well, we'll watch it and we'll react to it, and we'll talk to you next time, right here on the north Florida Sports Network.

Speaker 2:

Everybody just do your job. You understand that Fact.
