What Happens When Money Runs College Football And Accountability Disappears
Let me ask you one question The North Florida Florida Florida The North Florida Netflix. The North Florida's bottom network.
SPEAKER_01:Hey, it is just another football Monday on Thursday. It was a bad one. Terrible football. Still managed to lose. LSU is fired, Brian Kelly. It's a move that never made sense from the beginning. No. Never. What the hell were they thinking? So they add Florida, Penn State, LSU, your top three schools looking for coaches.
SPEAKER_00:Still got UCLA, Stanford, and Arkansas, also with coaching vacancies. Not to mention Virginia Tech. Yep.
SPEAKER_01:So it's gonna be a crazy offseason. Well, there'll be more. And there'll be more. NFL was terrible. There were some bad games. The only good game there was was my Jets! Your Jets with a win! How about that? How about that? What a crap game. But they hung in there and a running back pass won it for him. How about it?
SPEAKER_00:Right?
SPEAKER_01:The top 25 is out, Ohio State, number one, Indiana number two, Texas AM number three, Alabama four, Georgia five. Oregon will miss Georgia Tech. There we go. At number eight, Vanderbilt number nine, Miami is number 10. BYU. Yeah, there was a tie at 10. So 12, Notre Dame. Notre Dame number 12. Wow.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, well, I mean, their only losses are the two top 10 teams.
SPEAKER_01:Texas Tech, Tennessee, Virginia, Louisville, Cincinnati, Oklahoma, Missouri, Texas, and Michigan round out. Oh wait, Houston, USD, Utah, Memphis. Memphis. Memphis. USF. So we're getting closer. The ACT's getting interesting.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, you got four teams that are gonna factor in there.
SPEAKER_01:How many teams can get in from that conference?
SPEAKER_00:They're not getting more than two.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. So you got Georgia Tech and Virginia right now on top. Undefeated. And then you have Miami, Duke, SMU, Louisville, and Pitt all with one loss. Right.
SPEAKER_00:Well, Louisville is the guy sitting there in third place. Yeah. They got the biggest win. The only team to beat them was Virginia. So you know, if Virginia were to lose, they slide right into the number two spot. Everybody else needs help.
SPEAKER_01:Realistically, um, Georgia Tech. I don't think Virginia can lose another game. And unless they win the league. Georgia Tech has a chance.
SPEAKER_00:Right. They got the end of the year against Georgia.
SPEAKER_01:Which they can beat them.
SPEAKER_00:On a national, you know, from a national perspective, if they beat Georgia and are undefeated going into Charlotte, there's a chance they can lose that game and still make the playoffs.
SPEAKER_01:Oh yeah. I think both, yeah, that game, you can lose that game and still make it. For sure. What the interesting will be if Virginia can hold on. And can they still got four conference games, but we'll see. Right. Texas AM's leading the way in the SEC.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, and they don't really play anybody. Yeah, they got Texas on the road, but you got Alabama and AM on top of the league. Yeah. Alabama's got LSU in a couple weeks. They have Alex Atkins calling plays for him. Oh boy. That ought to be a absolute dumpster fire. It's hilarious. Yeah. Some guys just fall upwards.
SPEAKER_01:Charlie Ward's number was retired. That was nice to see. In basketball. As that gets started this next weekend, thank God. Something else. Well, Florida State has Wake Forest coming up. Wake Forest beat SMU. Wake Forest did beat SMU 13 to 12. Right. So their defense is legit. And I think they're getting their quarterback.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, they got they're playing both of them. Yeah. Oh yeah. Don't expect to win, folks.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. You don't even think so, huh?
SPEAKER_00:No, no chance. No. Not no chance. It's a very good chance that Castellanos will not play. That's well, that I don't think he should. And he's probably hurt.
SPEAKER_01:Well, yeah, it's the concussion protocol thing. Yeah, the hit. So you'll get a look at the old freshman. Barry.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, yeah. I would imagine you'll probably see both quarterbacks. You're not gonna let that kid get his head kicked in for four quarters.
SPEAKER_01:Man, it's just what a bad weekend it was. I mean, there was no good games.
SPEAKER_00:No. There weren't. I mean, South Carolina and Alabama was competitive. Yeah. Thought old baby beamer might pull it out there, but no. I enjoyed watching Texas AM kick the shit out of LSU. Yeah. Um that that second half, like to to to go into halftime with a lead and then come out in one half just get absolutely destroyed.
SPEAKER_01:What was funny, you know, it's Brian Kelly's just arrogance is what lost him that. He comes in there, and when you're at a place like LSU and you come from Notre Dame, the strength coach was there under Saban, under the three previous coaches. No, Tommy Moffat is and then he he fires him.
SPEAKER_00:Right.
SPEAKER_01:And then AM's like, all right, come over here.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. And this this is a guy that has been regarded as the best in the business for at least two decades now. Pretty much an institution at LSU in his own right. And the first thing he does is tell him to hit the road. That's that's that should have been on sign right there. Well, I'm I'm sure there were people in Baton Rouge who are like, well, we We're screwed. Yeah. And it I mean You could see it. Yeah. You let a guy like Corey Raymond, the defensive backs coach, who again had been there two decades, coached a number of all Americans and first round draft picks, you know, Patrick Peterson, Honey Badger, yada yada, all of them. And he lets them walk to Florida. Again, like, what the hell are we doing here? Yeah. And it never, never got any better, man. It just, you know, and I've never seen a head coach that loves to verbally assault his assistant coaches on the sideline more than Brian Kelly. You know, it like doesn't matter who it is. Special teams coach, you know, the guy kicks a bad punt, I'm going over there and cussing him out. You know, offensive coordinator, I'm gonna start cussing at you. Well, Notre Dame was happy to have him leave.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. That was your first sign right there.
SPEAKER_00:Right.
SPEAKER_01:Oh man, what a crap weekend. I mean, the NFL just that was one of the worst like Sundays I've seen in a while. I mean, I was just Panthers, ugh, and they just got destroyed. The Ravens are gonna get fine because they're playing coy and thinking that they can fool people. Right. Because there's no talent. I'm sure that the Bears were preparing for Lamar Jackson. Yeah, got Huntley, and they were but they still got beat. The the defense for the Ravens is finally getting back to what we expected.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, and it, you know, Caleb Williams is still just kind of you never know what you're gonna get from him.
SPEAKER_01:He's just a talent.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, the the only the only young QB that looked good that played this weekend in the NFL was Drake May. And Drake May looks the part. Yeah. Now it helps when you're playing the Browns, but again, five sacks for Miles Garrett. Like it's not.
SPEAKER_01:He's just been consistent, too. Yeah. Drake May's been consistent. And you know, uh you gotta give Jaden Daniels the benefit of the doubt going against the Chiefs. Well, he didn't play. Yeah, another one. You know, it was Mariota. Well, we knew that was gonna happen. We knew that Mariota wasn't gonna be able to hang in there. The Packers were able to out Jordan Love, stepped up, made the throws, played really good.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. Aaron Rodgers just looks old, man.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. Yep.
SPEAKER_00:He still got an arm, but it's it's everything else.
SPEAKER_01:Right. You gotta be able to run around. You can't do that anymore. The who's the MVP of the league right now, it's gotta be Jonathan Taylor.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01:What has he got like 15 touchdowns already? Yeah, and he's ridiculous. He's doing it, you know. The Colts are just monster. Their offense is a machine. Yep. And it's because they got Daniel Jones. If they had another quarterback, they would be just hyping it up, I guess. But record, I mean, they're on pace, they're shattering all Manning's teams. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:I mean, it's a different game. It's different. But it's what happens when you come into the season without any preseason hype or they just balance team, and Jonathan Taylor can just all around running back.
SPEAKER_01:He can score from 80, which he did. He can score short yardage, which he does. He's a threat in the passing game. He's a threat in the passing game. The guy's a machine. He's putting up a season for all time, and I think right now he's your clear favorite for MVP. Yeah. Because before it was already, you were looking at what, Baker Mayfield and Baker, Pat Mahomes is gonna be there. Right. He's gonna turn it on here the rest of the season. They might not even lose. That's probably who they'll give it to. But I mean, if if the Colts keep it up and he keeps it up at that position, because I mean it just makes everything hard to stop. Yeah. Because you have Pittman, you got some Pierce, they got Warren, you know, you have weapons to throw to, and it makes really it makes Daniel Jones' job really easy. You're gonna have to outscore him. Yeah. And get lucky like the Rams did. Yeah. It's gonna be you kind of start seeing the Colts and the Chiefs.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, yeah, that game's gonna be that game coming up here in a few weeks is gonna be a big one.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. Can't wait for that. College. College.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. It's shit cannon season, man.
SPEAKER_01:Everybody's getting fired. Right. I mean, it's it's the wild, wild west. There's no regulation. No. Um it's all about money. Yeah, people are eating buyouts. So what does that tell you? It tells me that Florida State's not a real player. I mean, in in terms of just the cash part. We don't have the money. If we did, we'd have fired them.
SPEAKER_00:It you know, it doesn't go down if you wait three games, four games, however many games it is, it's still gonna be the same amount of money.
SPEAKER_01:Well, there's just so many, there's other coaches. You're who are you gonna be able to get?
SPEAKER_00:Right, because there's more firings that are gonna happen. Right. Are you Auburn is dude? It I would be shocked if Auburn hung on to Hugh Freeze. That's just not gonna happen.
SPEAKER_01:Jimbo, he's gotta be liking what he sees in terms of getting another opportunity.
SPEAKER_00:Right. Somebody will somebody will probably take a swing on him. Um, you know, Lane Kiffin's gonna be the the guy that makes out ridiculously. Florida wants him bad. Yeah. Um LSU's gonna have to do it. LSU's gonna go after him too. Ole Miss will pay him a lot of money to try to keep them. You know, other jobs are gonna come open when when the vacancies now start getting filled. So it's gonna be crazy. And and if you know Florida State, like who the fuck are you gonna hire?
SPEAKER_01:Right. And then that it's not like you have the money. If you did, you don't have much. Well, you need to hold on to it. Right exactly. Well, then it's you just re-hauled the coordinators. You gotta, you gotta just like I was saying last week, you gotta just eat it.
SPEAKER_00:Right. You gotta just hope that suck it. Fans still care in three years after losing seasons.
SPEAKER_01:It's a six-win dream, man.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, that dream died. Yeah, it did. That that shit ain't happening this year.
SPEAKER_01:Four wins in a row. Well, you're gonna have to win. You gotta win this game. This is this is the must-win.
SPEAKER_00:It's there's for the six-win. No shot. These kids have tuned him out. You don't get that back once you lose the locker room. Yeah. Edwin Joseph is is starting this week. That that tells you how much accountability there is going on in the program. Kids fighting at practice. Well, that's because they don't have any depth.
SPEAKER_01:They don't have guys that are even physically. They can put guys in there that are showing up, but they're just gonna get burnt. Right. And they'll get beat.
SPEAKER_00:So it it you know, it comes about like I can do whatever the fuck I want because this guy doesn't want to get fired.
SPEAKER_01:Well then the players now can do whatever they want. Right. It's a player, it's gonna be a player's uh knowledge football.
SPEAKER_00:Whenever you gotta find the right you you could still kick kids off the off the team. You can still bench them, even if you're paying. Who cares, dude? You know, you you run off the field after you get an offside penalty. Yeah, yeah. I thought I thought there's no accountability here. Nah, there's none. And I don't think anybody in that entire program to be accountable for themselves.
SPEAKER_01:I don't understand it.
SPEAKER_00:I think he's just going through the motions at this point. He knows he's not gonna last. At some point, he's gonna be told to get out. Like, well, I'm still getting paid, I still gotta show up and say the same goddamn thing every week after every practice, after every loss. Yeah. It's gonna be the same thing. This is why you get code speak.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. Same crap.
SPEAKER_00:Right. He, you know, the the guys like Ira ask him the same questions every every postgame, you know, because they're not gonna lose my credential for this shit. You know, just ask him a softball question and we'll move on. You know, go play ragged ball, they'll be here next week, coach. Yeah. Whatever. You know, Wake Forest got a good defense, they got enough on offense to be able to score enough points.
SPEAKER_01:In terms of giving up, this is your bye week. Um, this is where you have to try to this is you have to rally and we'll see if they have any buy-in. Yeah. Night game.
SPEAKER_00:Night game, you got then you go on the road up to Clemson for another night game, and it it you know, it doesn't get easier. Even Virginia Tech looks like they have found a way to actually not be terrible.
SPEAKER_01:So like you said, you're not gonna win another game.
SPEAKER_00:No, you're losing out, man. Oh what I expect is three and nine. And that let's last year was the worst season ever that most of us alive have have witnessed, right? This season really isn't any different at the end of it. It's just you played one shittier out of conference game. You if you would have played Memphis this year instead of Kent State, you'd be finishing two and ten. It's weird that one of them's Alabama, but it's the same thing.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:You didn't draw as weak of a conference slate as you did last year. Nothing's changed. Nothing. Which is, you know, despite all the changes, despite all the changes made, nothing's changed in terms of the results. So it's pretty obvious that it's not gonna work. My whole thing is like, where do they start with the firings? Like, do is Mike the highest they go, or do they just tell the AD, like, hey man, is that the comprehensive assessment, though, that they're talking about? I I mean it it's the people that have enough money to write checks being like, all right, who do we really want to give this guy our money to go hire another coach?
SPEAKER_01:And I think he got he got fleeced on that on the signing bonus, man. That has to stop. Well, whoever you sign, you can't you can give him give him give him all the money in the world every year, right? Give them everything. Yeah, but there's no but if it doesn't work out. The buyout is the buyout that's gotta be the buyouts are not no. They're gonna be like one or two years, there's gonna be like one year salary or something. Or one or two years' salary, that's it. Or not this 10-year shit.
SPEAKER_00:Some language in it that you know just these 10-year contracts. If you aren't performing, like yeah, like I like listen, if he was doing what what Brian Kelly was doing, and you know, like going eight and four, and he was just an asshole, and people wanted him out because of that, like that's one thing. But just want to just be you're talking average, right?
SPEAKER_01:You're talking about oh and four in the ACC. You can't even be two and two? No. You can't beat Pitt in Stanford, no, you know, it it Stanford? Right, Stanford. Stanford. Get to a bowl game, man. Get to a bowl game. Wow, man. That that get to a bowl game. You would uh you would have to be a big thing. You have to start incentivizing these things like that. Like, all right, well, we're gonna give you, you're not getting the money unless you get to a bowl game. Or the players, guess what? You're not getting the money unless you get to a bowl game. Yeah, yeah. And then you're getting a lot more, right?
SPEAKER_00:You know, that well, that's how they do it in the NFL, but that that's when you know you have to have collective bargaining. I know, you don't have that now. So it's all just cash up front.
SPEAKER_01:Right. And then how much can you pay me? Right, and then it's just well, you want me to work hard. That's gonna cost you even more money.
SPEAKER_00:Oh my god. Yeah. I I expect it can be done though. The athletic director to to be somewhere else in the pretty near future.
SPEAKER_01:But look at Jimbo, though. I mean, look at what Mike Elko's doing. Right. Yeah. He's winning. Yeah, well, he's a good coach. He's different. It's different.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. You know, he he he won at Duke. He's you know, you could see why Jimbo wanted him as his defensive coordinator so so many years. But again, you know, he's You gotta find that guy. Sure.
SPEAKER_01:I mean it it But it's not that thing, is it? It's it's more.
SPEAKER_00:I mean, you just kinda you gotta get lucky, man. Yeah. Timing, it's luck, it's all the shit that goes into it. But you also have to protect yourself. You can't promise more money than your school is willing to pay if everything goes to shit. And that's what Florida State did. So AD's gotta go, everybody's gotta leave. I would be, you know, if he is the coach next year, you start to run the risk of fans around here just starting to check out the same way the players have. If you're not gonna sell anything to be excited about and have a lame duck head coach, then I mean good luck having any engagement. And next year's schedule's hard. Yeah, oh yeah. It is hard. Playing Notre Dame again. You gotta go to Tuscaloosa. You know, you gotta go two pit. You got teams that are good play NC State. All right. That's another school you could see an opening at. Um, they're not having the season, the normal eight and four type David Dorn season.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. So well, that's the thing, man. It's it it's changed where it's gonna be the haves and the have nots. Yeah, there's not a lot of eight and fours around.
SPEAKER_00:Not in the ACC, but I mean, you know, there's there's also guys that have pretty clearly run their course at spots. Yeah. You know, Dabo being one. So it'll it'll be interesting to see. I'd kind of interested to see if he moves on. Looks for another opportunity. You got Sarkeesian flirting with the NFL. If Texas comes open, holy shit.
SPEAKER_01:Why wouldn't you want to be in the NFL if you're a coach?
SPEAKER_00:Right. Well, I mean, you look at Texas, dude.
SPEAKER_01:I mean, if you're a coach, you get you get salary cap at least. I mean, it's more just about you can actually scheme, I guess, and it's not about all this other crap.
SPEAKER_00:Right. Well, you don't have to you don't have to pay guys to come be a part of your team. You draft them.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:You know, like you, you know, yeah, we gotta pay you, but it's gonna be the same that everybody else is paying their rookie.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, it there's gotta be something something similar being done in college. I mean, you're paying these guys, it's otherwise it's just gonna get worse. But I mean, is it getting worse because more people are watching it? It's uh it's still gonna be the same teams at the end that it always is. You have it, but you got teams like Indiana.
SPEAKER_00:Right. You know, and well, there's always always a team that nobody expects that's gonna, you know, imitate a title contender. It used to be Boise State. You know, when there wasn't a playoff, there was only a BCS. So yeah, now with a 12-team playoff, technically you could get these underdogs that are gonna make title runs, but they're not. You know, Indiana's they'll lose in the Big Ten championship. It's gonna be interesting to see.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, is that our ride? It's here finally. The ride! Oh, why yippee. Just ready for basketball season.
SPEAKER_03:Our ride is here. We gotta uh shuttle. Get it, dude.
SPEAKER_01:Well, we gotta get on out of it. Our ride's here. Yeah, we do have basketball season. That's right.
SPEAKER_00:Oops, baby. I think they can finish better than 15th in the ACC.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, yeah. Why not? I mean, why not? Nobody knows what to expect. Those those preseason rings, you can throw them. Like, those are those are more bull crap than they've ever been. Right, right. Like, they don't know. Like, you're restructuring these college. There's a few teams that you do know that are gonna be good. Right. Yeah. But other than that, you don't know.
SPEAKER_03:No, you don't.
SPEAKER_01:Because you go out and you there's five guys on a court, right? And you can go buy a whole new roster. Florida State's got a whole new roster. Shit, you can get kids from the G League now, just like Louisville. So this team is gonna be good. It's gonna be up tempo. It's gonna be fun to watch. It's gonna be, you know, what's scoring.
SPEAKER_00:Both teams. Yeah. They're gonna give up a lot of points, but you know, they're gonna score. So yeah. It'll be Balcorn State. November 4th. There it is, man. They're fighting Steve McNair's. The Luke Lauk season gets underway. I'm excited for it. Hopefully, wash that lost to Wake Forest out of the pallet.
SPEAKER_01:Ugh. It's gonna be awful. Six-win dream continues Saturday night. Climb on down, baby. Campbell Stadium. As the Florida State Seminoles are favored. Favored. To beat the Wake Forest Steven Dinkins again.
SPEAKER_00:Again, a chance to make a lot of money. Towards that buyout, FSU big wigs. Yeah. You hammer that line, dude. You kidding me? You kidding me? Man, they're just they're trying to give us a way out. I really hope somebody's paying attention.
SPEAKER_01:Uh NFL got a lot of work to do after that crap. Hopefully it'll get better. It was just awful. Too many teams on the World Series, 18 innings last night, continues. 2-1. Dodgers lead. We'll react to them, and we got picks coming up right here next time on the North Florida Sports Network.
SPEAKER_03:You gotta give us a shot, you don't want to.
