North Florida Sports Network Podcast

Statement Win In Tallahassee

Austin Fletcher Season 4 Episode 397
SPEAKER_01:

Let me ask you one question.

SPEAKER_00:

The north floor is bone floor is bored floor. The north floor is bono network.

SPEAKER_01:

You gotta give us a job!

SPEAKER_00:

You know what you do the north floor is bono networks.

SPEAKER_01:

Next day. Till next week. 42. Wait for it. Seven. Oh my!

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah. Just like I predicted, this team came out ready to fight for their coach.

SPEAKER_02:

Rally around that asshole. Big win. Big win. Good job by both sides of the ball. Good game plan. Best in Tlabama. Maybe they just need more than a week.

SPEAKER_03:

Ow.

SPEAKER_02:

It helps, I guess. It helps when the other team's quarterback sucked. Yeah, wait for offense wasn't good, but you know, the Florida State defense looked like they were timing the blitzes a little better. We're playing a little with you know more confidence. Taking the hit, the fight, too.

SPEAKER_03:

The offense probably should have had a shutout.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, Brock Glenn came in, does what he does, fumbles, land scores, but 42 to 7. A much needed victory for Mike Norvell and the seminals as they improved to 4 and 4. And one and four in the counter. Oh again. This means for the rest of the year. We're also gonna look around the country. And there's gonna be more open seats probably at Albert's goodness great.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, I would I would expect that to happen today. Yeah. Call it a meeting, dance with coaches meetings, they've called a meeting with the entire coaching staff. Wow. Most likely gonna let him know he's back up for shit. You just go click off. I mean, I got a low buyout. It's like 15 million to buy him out of his contract. They'll they'll eat that.

SPEAKER_02:

Yep. So we'll have a Alburn probably added to the list of jobs available.

SPEAKER_03:

Yep. Two names to keep an eye on there. Who? John James Fisher. Yep. And Dapney Coleman Dabo Sweeney.

SPEAKER_02:

Yes. Clemson lost to Duke. Manny Diaz. Yeah. But let's go back to FSU. The big 42-7 win over Wake Forest. Wake Forest had a really good defense and a good game plan by Gus Malzon and the Florida State offense as they came out with 421 total yards, 271 through the air, 150 on the ground, averaging 7.4 yards a play. Um, that's really good. And uh I didn't expect that. No. And they needed it.

SPEAKER_03:

I think the uh Castellano's looked the best he's looked all season throwing the football.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah. Yeah, he did.

SPEAKER_03:

That was a big boost.

SPEAKER_02:

Six twelve of sixteen, two hundred and seventy-one yards, very efficient, and and then a touchdown. Sam Singleton with some big runs. 14 carries, 91 yards, and a touchdown as he got the start. Uh he was pretty much your only running back that made any plays. Um, but Deuce Robinson continues his good year. Yeah. From the five catches, 148 yards, and a touchdown. He's a matchup problem for anybody. So you gotta continue to utilize that. And the defense stepped up. I know Wake Forest doesn't have a you know good offense, but with this defense, you'll take whatever you can get. Yeah. As they held uh Wake Forest to 247 total yards and uh only 85 yards rushing, 3.5 yards per play. So you doubled them up on yards per play, you know, and you had some big plays, 7 of 11 on third down for the uh Knowles. And because they didn't run that many plays. You know, they Right.

SPEAKER_03:

We ran like 50 something plays.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, 57.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

They lost a fumble, but uh had an interception, had a fumble.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, it was a big you know, big chunk plays. They're just kind of they didn't have an answer for for Deuce.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah. There were some mistakes by Wake Forest or some missed throws too. They could have kept it closer.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, they their quarterback played really bad.

SPEAKER_02:

You know, um they hey hey man it was it was good to see. It was like this team had built up some frustration and they let it out.

SPEAKER_04:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

They took it out on Wake Forest. And it wasn't a bad it was a legit defense. Best defense in the conference according to the numbers. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03:

And uh they came out I mean they you know they held SMU to 12 points last week.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, they came out with a plan and they executed that. Yeah. So uh you know that's Mike Norveld now 26 and 8 in November. Hey, there you go, man. He got himself a conference win. It only took 400 and something days. If you can hold teams under 20, they should be able to win. 21 and 2 now. Yeah. When he hit when he does that.

SPEAKER_03:

I mean that yeah, unless you're Auburn, man, you hold teams under 20.

SPEAKER_02:

The FSU has now gained over 400 yards in seven consecutive games. That's the second longest active streak in the ACC. And the longest streak since 22 and 23.

SPEAKER_03:

Right. The yards gain thing is gonna be there every week with Gus. It's putting the ball in the end zone. That is just a mixed bag with hit with his offense. But they finished drives this time.

SPEAKER_02:

Five rushing touchdowns for FSU and eight touchdowns for Sawchuk on the year.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah. That's good. I like I liked what they did with the running backs.

SPEAKER_02:

He's got now uh Deuce Robinson has three hundred and forty yard receiving games. That's the most in the country that's tied for most in the country. He's putting some good film on. Yeah, I mean, he's he should get a shot. A seminal receiver had 140 yards since 2000. Two minutes.

SPEAKER_03:

There you go. I mean, you know, he's your mismatch. I I like that uh, you know, the receiver, you know, it was Deuce, it was Danzi, and it was McCoy, and that was pretty much it.

SPEAKER_02:

Well, Castellanos has not turned the ball over, he hasn't thrown a pick in three straight games. That's the first time in his career. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03:

I mean, that's a good sign. It is, I guess. Still lost two of those three games.

SPEAKER_02:

I mean, he's first in the country with yards per completion.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, yeah. I mean, he he's gonna chunk it downfield. You know, this isn't crossing routes type of offense. It was surprising. It was a nice change, man, to see him actually have some success. Um what I what I what I'm afraid of is that he's gonna go five and seven, and it's it's not they're just gonna balk. It's a chance to get rid of him.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah. Well you hope you can you're gonna have to win one of those games on the road.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, yeah. And it, you know, it what's crazy is So next week. Next week might be your best chance.

SPEAKER_02:

Which what I which before the season I thought was gonna be the the hardest game of the year. Yeah. So you'll have I mean, you got probably your two toughest places in the history to play on the in the conference on the road. Right.

SPEAKER_03:

Dude, you're going up to Raleigh on a Friday night. You forget that shit. Like, unless they have an all-time.

SPEAKER_02:

It might come down to. Right. I mean it because right now you got four. You got four wins, and then you got Virginia Tech at home. Hopefully you can get that one that's five. So then it's gonna be on the road at Florida, NC State, or Clemson. It's it's you gotta win one one of those.

SPEAKER_03:

Right. It's just one of those things. Like you can you can beat all four of them. You can also go O for. Yeah. That's the But you're saying one and three, probably. Saying that's probably the most likely. Which would be five and seven. This team's yet to win on the road in two seasons.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah. That's not good. I I think four I if the if he gets to five, I I I fire him. I don't I don't think they're gonna fire him because they can't afford it.

SPEAKER_03:

Right. They just bought the well this was this this game last night was huge. Yeah. And they apparently every every big check right in Mofo at Florida State was gathered at this game. You know, homecoming. All right, wanted to see it. Right. Like this guy falls flat on his face. We're gonna like he's done. You know, you get your ass kicked at homecoming by wake.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03:

You're going in three and five. We don't have any confidence you're gonna get a road win in death value.

SPEAKER_02:

They came out and they were prepared. It was the best game plan that we've seen since the Alabama game. Yeah. You know, both sides of the ball were prepared, both sides of the ball played well, and they took care of business against a capable opponent.

SPEAKER_03:

Right. I mean, they're five and two.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, they're five and two, and you beat them 42-7, and you should have shut them out. Yeah. That's nothing to sleep on. Let's see what you can do with that. Right. Because you have a Clemson team that they're on quit watch, man. Yeah. And you have Dabo.

SPEAKER_03:

That game yesterday yelling. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Yelling. You could hear them. It's like yelling.

SPEAKER_03:

And you could see the faces of the players. And it's like, I mean, you can read it on their face. It's like, is this dickhead serious? It's like, bro, we got a whole nother half, and you're over here just cutting it. Three and five now. Yeah, three and five. They just got beat by Duke for the first at home for the first time in 45 years.

SPEAKER_02:

You might have a must-win game for a bowl for both teams. Yeah. Next week.

SPEAKER_03:

But I'm telling you, man, like his tone this entire season has been a lot. It reminds me a lot of Bobby Bowdon at the end of Jeff's tenure, you know, in 05 and 06, where he was very, you know, you guys are lucky to have me. Kind of I I don't know. Dabbo just seems like he's getting to the point where he's gonna pack his shit and go somewhere else. Watch for Auburn. It's another reason I think Well, the way you yeah, Norvell is gonna be safe.

SPEAKER_02:

Is there's just there's just too many going on. The games change too much. I mean, it sucks that he lost. And then if you look at the games, and it it it it matters how you lose. Last year was pathetic. Yeah. This year's aggravating, but it's not they're not giving up. Right. There might be some times where you look at it. Hey, he just doubled your win total. Yeah, you just doubled your win total. You've had the Stanford loss was sad. The Stanford loss got screwed on that. You know, that you know, you you Virginia loss doesn't look that bad anymore. The defense gave that up. The defense gave up the pit loss.

SPEAKER_03:

The Virginia and the pit and the Miami loss. You I mean you look at that. You were the you fought.

SPEAKER_02:

All three of those teams are you know one possession games. You could beat all those teams. So this team can easily win the rest of their games. Yep. But they could lose them too.

SPEAKER_03:

Fall flat on the face.

SPEAKER_02:

And that's why it was a six-win dream.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah. You know, he beat Alabama and got ahead of our skis, man.

SPEAKER_02:

And the way Norvell does it. We all bought into it. Well, hopefully he can go on another streak. And this is the start of it. Yeah. I mean, you know, he loses games in chunks, and then so maybe they can get some momentum, maybe they can build on this for next year and like get start a nice run, maybe get some camaraderie, have both coaches return. You know?

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, I I don't think there's any chance of that.

SPEAKER_02:

Where are they gonna go?

SPEAKER_03:

I mean, I think Tody White's gonna get a head coaching job somewhere. Really? There's gonna be a desperate enough coach. I mean, nobody's taking that UCLA job. Nobody wants that job.

SPEAKER_02:

James Franklin will take it.

SPEAKER_03:

James Franklin's going to Virginia Tech. That's his wheelhouse.

SPEAKER_02:

Well, I mean, that was the that was a season low for Wake Forest.

SPEAKER_04:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

That was that was some good, a good game, much needed. And the way they did it, the way they dominated the game, that was good to see. If you were, you know, those boosters and the homecoming people watching. It is you want to see by and you want to see the players fighting.

SPEAKER_03:

What I saw like and Wake's quarterback, Robbie, he just looked intimidated the the entire game.

SPEAKER_02:

Which means that's what you want, though. That's what you kind of saw in the Alabama game. That's when the defense is taken. That's what Tony White, when his defense is going well. They blitzed. They blitz, they time it. Yeah. They attack the offense and make them kind of have to play on their heels.

SPEAKER_03:

Saw Omari Williams get get 20 snaps on defense. So I think they've uh I think he's officially gonna be on that side of the ball. I think they've kind of chilled out on the tight end experiment.

SPEAKER_02:

Well, that's because you got Pittman. Yeah, you got Pittman. You don't need him. Pittman's an animal. You got you you need pass rushers. Yeah, and you need it. You need him on defense. Yeah. Right. Well, what else? We got uh Vanderbilt lost to Texas. Yeah, that was disappointing. So the SEC will you know it's gonna get interesting as far as who's gonna have a shot, but you know who's not gonna have a shot, it looks like that's the you. Miami lost the SMU and just a crystal ball special.

SPEAKER_03:

It it really was. It really was.

SPEAKER_02:

It was a Mario Crystal Ball special.

SPEAKER_03:

You know, and and the The way they lost that game. The officiating in that game was just laughable. But yeah It's the ACC. They've been in the ACC for 20 years now. You gotta just know what you're getting into. That game, they had a chance to put the game out of reach to end the game. It was third and one, and they couldn't do it. The physical ball from from, you know, and a couple times where they only needed a yard.

SPEAKER_02:

And then just a stupid penalty.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Hit the quarterback late. Right. That's fourth down. Yeah. Where the game's over. Well, it it would have been fourth down. It would have been fourth down. Right. They called a timeout before he got to playoff, um, and then he hits them. So it's automatically first down. But even all of that. And then you have a tie game and you have a timeout. Right. That's that's my thing is you know, if there's 25 seconds on the clock. You got a timeout, you got a guy like Malachi Tony who can get open. Right. He can catch a four-yard pass and turn it upfield for 30 yards. But what do they do? They kneel it. Now he takes a knee.

SPEAKER_04:

No, no.

SPEAKER_03:

Now he takes a knee.

unknown:

No, no.

SPEAKER_03:

And I mean, it you it it it honestly just sucked the energy out of that team. Yeah. Out of that sideline.

SPEAKER_02:

Well, that's what I'm saying. Like, you're you gotta go down fighting, man. You're on the road, like you, you're tied, you have a timeout. I know you just you just gave up a stupid play. Go back and steal the momentum.

SPEAKER_03:

He has no confidence in Carson Beck.

SPEAKER_02:

And I I don't blame him. Because you saw an overtime a terrible interception late. Late. Let the line.

SPEAKER_03:

Tony was wide open if he just throws it on time and he double clutched. And that's ball game. Right. And then SMU just runs it in the end zone. Six straight running plays. They didn't like it. Get down on the four-yard line. No, I'm not kicking a field goal.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03:

Like that. I'm running it right up their ass. We're gonna win by a touchdown. And that, you know. Yeah. Miami is and then they rush the field.

SPEAKER_02:

Miami now is six and two, two and two in the ACC.

SPEAKER_03:

And and you know that that early season win over Notre Dame means as much as Florida State's win over Alabama. Yeah. Nobody cares anymore.

SPEAKER_02:

Right. They're not. I mean, at the end of the year, the way they're playing, Notre Dame's on a roll.

SPEAKER_03:

You're gonna start seeing those kind of games just disappear. Those out-of-conference games early season.

SPEAKER_02:

Because at the end of the year, say they both are 10 and 2. I'd tell you what. Miami's not getting in. No, they're not.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, they're not getting in. Notre Dame. Notre Dame took care of business. Miami's, you know. They squandered it. Yeah. That's what they do. Right. You've you've lost to you lost to a team that got beat by Baylor.

SPEAKER_02:

You beat Florida State. You had a bye week, and you all you had to do was just not lose twice the rest of the year. And you've lost twice. Yep. And the last three games.

SPEAKER_03:

You've lost two out of the last three games. Right. And that's you know, also it's you know, first road game. First first game out of the state of Florida for Miami. Yeah. So you know, the national media is gonna be down on them. I I don't see them getting in.

SPEAKER_02:

No. They're about nine percent right now. They're gonna need a bunch of bunch of stuff too.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, everybody's gonna just start have to start beating shit out of each other.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, you're gonna need a crazy scenario where they can somehow get to Charlotte. And they have to win out. Yeah, they're gonna have to get on the road to Blackbury to Pitt. I don't think they lost it. And it and it's just oh my god, it's frustrating if I'm a Miami fan. Oh yeah. They're pissed. Because you got players. Yeah, the roster's better. It's bet it's got one of the best rosters in the nation. Yeah. And with the schedule they had, it's penciled into the playoff this year.

SPEAKER_03:

Right. It was set up perfectly for them. And it's just oof. You look at that. The one hard, you know, you did what you had to do and beat Notre Dame. Florida State and Florida are both dog shit.

SPEAKER_02:

So Florida, man, they they they probably should have beat Georgia.

SPEAKER_04:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah. And that game down there is looking like it's gonna be tough to win.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, I mean, you know.

SPEAKER_02:

But whatever.

SPEAKER_03:

We'll see. We'll see where it is. They still got other games to play. You know, they gotta play Vandy. They gotta go go on the road to Kentucky. Stoops is coaching for his job if he even wants to be there. It's just who knows. And again, you're you're starting to get into quit watch season. Yeah. Where kids are gonna start packing it up and thinking about their next stop.

SPEAKER_02:

Which was really good to see if you're an FSU fan, if you're if you're Mike Norvell. And to see that we we gave, we fought hard, and that we still want to play for this guy.

SPEAKER_03:

Well, and we we we want to win. Yeah, we want to go to a woman. I'm tired of going out here and and and losing losing, man.

SPEAKER_02:

Like an ACC game finally has been won.

SPEAKER_03:

Hang the banner. There it is. And you know what? I'm glad, because Belichick. Man. He got his win. He got his win and we still went Ofer. I was gonna be so pissed. We don't get to play Syracuse in there. Walk-on lacrosse player quarterback. You know, Georgia Tech goes down.

SPEAKER_02:

Georgia Tech, yeah, they lost.

SPEAKER_03:

It'd be interesting to see. Virginia. Virginia. And how pissed are you if you're NC State, man? You beat Virginia, doesn't even count as a conference win. Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_02:

Georgia Tech falls to 14 and the coach is full. Louisville up to 15. Vanderbilt falls to 16. Miami down to 18. It's gonna be Ohio State, Indiana, AM, Alabama, Georgia.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, we'll have the playoff rankings coming out.

SPEAKER_02:

Yep.

SPEAKER_03:

Georgia's a team that I I can't figure them out, man. Yeah. Well, they look like they should be good. Just don't know, man.

SPEAKER_04:

Shut up.

SPEAKER_03:

Well, we gotta get on out of here. I mean, dude, uh, Ohio State's a machine.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah. Matt Patricia, they got an NFL defense.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, they got an NFL defense. They got three NFL wide receivers. Um quarterback is ridiculous. Just a machine. You got something's gonna have to break up that Death Star. Brian Hartline gets a job somewhere.

SPEAKER_02:

Well, some state will probably try to get him if they're smart.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, they're they're gonna they're gonna keep after Elko until he finally tells them to eat shit. Like, I'm not counting. He's from Pennsylvania. Or actually, he went to Penn, he's from Jersey. Like, that's his that's his stomping ground, but I I just can't see him pulling him out of Texas.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, I mean, dude, if you're a football guy, where why would you want to leave a place that has everything you need?

SPEAKER_03:

You've already, I mean, that yeah, we'll see. I don't I don't expect it to happen, but I mean it it it is a little bit easier in the Big Ten. When you're at Penn State, you're one of maybe three or four elites. Texas AM, you just got a lot of money in the SEC.

SPEAKER_02:

Yep, it's gonna be interesting to see the coaching carousel as it gets started. Where the chips fall.

SPEAKER_03:

Right? It's gonna be you have like half the SEC with open jobs. Yep. They should all have to just switch coaches like in Uno when you gotta reshuffle the deck. Everybody just change coaches, pull it out of a hat. Lock it. We got hoops Tuesday night.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah! As the Seminals open up their 25-26 season by hosting Alcorn State Tuesday at 7 p.m. Can't wait.

SPEAKER_03:

I know. Looking forward to that. Loop Lox Era.

SPEAKER_01:

Era. Era.

SPEAKER_03:

Oh no, man. Let's finish top 10 in the ACC.

SPEAKER_02:

It's gonna be a fun watch because they're gonna play fast.

SPEAKER_03:

Right. You know, shoot the shit out of the ball.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah. Well, NFL games today. We'll watch them. We'll react to them. And we'll talk to you next time on a football Monday. Right here on the North Florida Sports Network.

SPEAKER_01:

You gotta give us a shot. You know what?
