Welcome And Draft Agenda

SPEAKER_01

Let me ask you one question.

SPEAKER_00

You gotta get like a shot. You know what?

Hurricanes Highlights And Giants Win

SPEAKER_04

Welcome back. We're back. I got Justin back with us. I got Jimmy Reno with us. And we got draft to get to. We got baseball to talk about. We got NBA playoffs to talk about. A lot to get to. But um the draft happened. I'm not gonna lie. This was not really a big draft for me. But Justin's here to talk about it. And I am pretty sure it's because a lot of Miami Hurricanes were drafted. Is that correct?

SPEAKER_01

Yes, sir.

SPEAKER_04

Yes, a good draft uh for the Miami Hurricanes. And uh it started off with uh the offensive tackle. Right? See the first one draft?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, Maui Noah was the first one off the board to the Giants. Great pick, dude. Giants killed it in the first round with Reese and May Noah.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. I mean they got the best linebacker and the best offensive tackle. And then uh that's those are good hardball type picks. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And then you um I can't believe Bain fell to the Bucks to the 15.

SPEAKER_01

Well, you can thank the Dolphins for that one.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. What do you think about the Dolphins pick?

SPEAKER_01

Uh dude, we the kid's name nickname is crispy because he's addicted to crispy creams. He's constantly overweight and immensely talented. He's gonna suck. Great. You I I mean, yeah, I thought Alabama couldn't run the ball all season. You can't be a first-round pick on the offensive line for a team that had like the worst running game in like the power five.

SPEAKER_02

Right. And the the criticism on on Ty Simpson, their their quarterback, was that he never had a clean pocket. You know, like so it's hard to judge him fairly because the offensive line was such a mess. And the Florida State game, we like, dude, our fresh the freshman kid.

SPEAKER_04

Enough right there.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I was shocked to see him go that high. How did it happen because of potential up? Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I you know, time and time again, you see this happen. And these coaches, I mean, I don't know what the hell who they think they are. But I mean, you don't think all right, so I couldn't block a freshman at a bad on a bad team. Do you I'm gonna go to the NFL now?

Dolphins First Round Pick Debate

SPEAKER_02

Right, right. I struggled, I struggled past protecting in the SEC my entire career. They could. I mean, he's but again, like he's not a guy that's been able to stay in shape, even at the college level. Now he's a professor. Yeah, he's lazy.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Well, and uh I mean, how how's he gonna block David Bailey for the Jets? How is fat Caden Proctor gonna block David Bailey if he couldn't block the terrible Florida State offensive or defensive line? It's not gonna happen.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. So what else were you excited about from Miami?

SPEAKER_01

Uh for the Dolphins, I love the second round uh pick of uh Jacob Rodriguez, even though technically linebacker might have been our strongest position on the team. That was one where they just watched the game film and they took the best player on the board in Jacob Rodriguez. And I love that pick. I can't wait to see what that kid can do. And I'd be lying if I was saying that uh the fact that Zach Thomas was his mentor didn't play a role in the Dolphins drafting him.

SPEAKER_04

All right. I'm not I don't have a problem with that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that that uh that kid's good, man. Started off his college career in Virginia. But as a quarterback. Yeah, when he got to Texas Tech. That's crazy. Yeah. If you watched any Texas Tech last year, their defense was the story, man. It's like he was the guy.

SPEAKER_01

He was everywhere, dude. Every time there was a loose ball, a tipped pass, a big play needed to be made. That Rodriguez kid was everywhere.

SPEAKER_02

Right. And the only reason he didn't go first round is because he didn't test with freakish numbers, but it you you put him on the field, turn on, grind the tape.

SPEAKER_04

Well, so you like the draft overall in terms of roster building for the Dolphins.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I actually do. They really I think they killed it in the late rounds. We uh in the later rounds, we got the uh the big freakish wide receiver, uh Douglas, who you know, a combine freak. You know, that's worth a later round pick.

SPEAKER_04

Exactly. Yeah, I don't mind that.

SPEAKER_01

I love the Chris Bell pick, the wide receiver from Louisville.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's another kid that's just gonna see.

SPEAKER_01

We saw I got to see a lot of Chris Bell because Miami, you know, obviously in the ACC, and and the kid can play, man. I don't care about his measurables. I'm big on game film. I freaking hate the combine.

SPEAKER_04

Right.

SPEAKER_01

Um, and and Chris Bell, when you watch the game film, the kid can play. Um, and then I really think you hardly ever hear this, dude. Seventh round. The Dolphins drafted the kid Llewellyn, the pass rusher out of Iowa. That's another one that if you just watch the game film, the kid is a player. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I mean, dude, defense from Iowa, it first of all, you know he's gonna his technique is gonna be flawless. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

And he's not lazy. Well, yeah, and I mean that's a trend too. I mean, you gotta I want guys that love football. If you're you're about to give them a lot of money in a in a city like Miami, where it's all year round there's stuff to do. Temptations out there, and you when you need to be training and sleeping, and and that's tough. And I don't think that's I don't think that's go that's probably a reason. I mean, this team hadn't won a damn playoff game in three decades. Freaking reason.

SPEAKER_01

Hey, it's only been two and a half.

SPEAKER_04

Jesus. So I mean it's it's bad right now with football.

Late Round Steals And Culture Fit

SPEAKER_02

No, but I mean those defensive picks with Jeff Hafley, like that that Dolphins defense is gonna be gonna be nasty here next year or two.

Quarterback Plan Malik Willis

SPEAKER_01

I'm ready to see Llewellyn dominate Caden Proctor in OTAs, our seventh round pick, just manhandling our first round tackle.

SPEAKER_04

What do you think about the quarterback pickup? I haven't asked you about Malik Willis. I I I hate it. Yeah, me too. I mean, really? He could have gotten somebody better for cheaper. He's going with familiarity. Yeah, that's what he's going with. Familiarity.

SPEAKER_01

What we should have done is just road with Quinn Ewers and draft the best quarterback next year. Because Malik Willis ain't it, Quinn Ewers ain't it. We need to, I mean, we need a top quarterback. We we screwed up the last time we did it when we took Tua. And next year's quarterback class is looking to be quite freaking loaded. And if you're in the top five, I think that any of the top five quarterbacks coming out next year are gonna project higher than Malik Willis does currently.

SPEAKER_04

Especially with all the wide receiver talent he has to throw, too.

SPEAKER_02

Question though. If if Miami's picking in the top five next year, do you pass on Jeremiah Smith if he's there?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Yep, I do. Um, I mean, he's awesome, but he's gonna throw him the ball.

SPEAKER_02

Exactly. I've seen a lot of early mock drafts that have him going number two to Miami. I'm just like, man, I mean that'd be idiotic.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, it's like let's let's slow down on next year's mock draft.

SPEAKER_02

Right. Well, we you always gotta hold on now. You got to Arch Manning, number one overall.

Rams Reach And Draft Shockers

SPEAKER_04

All right, so the big story in this draft was the Rams taking Ty Simpson at 13. Uh, and then Sean McVeigh's on camera reactions or he looked like he was getting in the BMV, man.

SPEAKER_02

It's like, dude, I d don't ask me about this kid. I didn't want to.

SPEAKER_04

It is what it is. A friend of uh friend of the GM is Ty Simpson's father. Right.

SPEAKER_02

Right. Yeah. Had a lot of conversations with his dad about Typha.

SPEAKER_04

Another thing, familiarity there. Right, sure. And I mean he's I got another word for it. He's got talent, but it I mean, yeah. When you have when you're that close and you saw last year the Rams were like the only team that could move the ball in Seattle. Yeah. You think with the talent available out there, like Justin said, you could have added to make your defense probably the best in the NFL with just studs everywhere. Or you could have gave Matt Stafford some protection, or you could have given him another weapon, but you chose to take somebody that's gonna have no compete with Stetson Bennett scenario. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

It was I thought if they did the Rams did get they did get Stafford a uh weapon, I think, in the fourth round.

SPEAKER_02

CJ Daniels Yeah, they did draft CJ Daniels. They got they got him one offensive weapon, really the only pick from the Rams that I liked.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, that'll be good.

SPEAKER_02

They had you know they had limited with yeah, they've been killing it in the draft the last couple of years.

SPEAKER_01

I I'm so uh like their draft was really surprising.

SPEAKER_04

Right, this is the way they uh I think you just take the best player, and if you like, if you do like Simpson, trade back up and get him. Yeah, yeah, because he'd have been there. Yeah, I don't think that's why I I it seems a little bit of an a reach, but we'll see. You know, he won't.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, you're hoping to it's a great situation for him. Yeah, for Simpson. It's a great situation, man. I mean, you got Matt Stafford to watch every day in practice, you got Sean McVay to teach you how to play quarterback. I mean, if if Ty Simpson's gonna succeed, it's gonna be a uh with the Rams.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Yep. Um, what else do you like about this draft? Mendoza, obviously number one. No shock there.

SPEAKER_02

Um, I was surprised to see the Cardinals take a running back that high. Jeremiah Love at number three.

SPEAKER_04

I like it. I mean, when you're the Cardinals, I kind of do too. When you're the Cardinals, they need something. They do a lot. You know, but this is at least gonna give the fan base. This is gonna be highlight material. This is I mean, this is a game breaker guy. I I actually don't mind the pick. They got Carson Beck in the third round. Right, that's not a bad pick. Yeah, they're good at quarterback. Yeah, so Jacoby Brissett's decent. If they they need it, you he threw the ball like 60 times. He threw the ball so many times last year. It was insane. And like because they had no running backs.

unknown

Right.

SPEAKER_04

They all got hurt. So now you add love, and then if you can get some of these guys back, like Trey Benson, and then uh do they still have the the Terminator out of there? Yeah, Connor's still there. Well, then that then you have, I mean, then then you're flipping the tables, and you have a loaded backfield.

SPEAKER_02

I yeah, love's walking in right now the starter taking taking Trey Benson's carries.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's true. Oh, yeah, they're in a doubt. He's taking everybody's carries, right?

SPEAKER_04

Benson is is an after. But as much as as much as they needed running back, especially that team, they have the best tight end in the game. So um right now, who who's McBride? So that's they got some receiver town. So we'll see. I mean you got Marvin Harrison Jr. But I I mean, I think they're gonna be better than people think.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you build out that offense. I mean, you look at that offense, like say you're playing Madden. Yeah, it doesn't mean anything. I mean, you got Trey McBride.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

You got Trey McBride at tight end, like you said. You got Harrison Jr. at wide receiver. Uh, you got Jeremiah Love at running back. There's something to work with there.

Jags Depth And Bucs Clean Up

SPEAKER_04

That's right. That's what you can expect. Arizona Cardinal draft analysis here at North Florida Sports Network. What do you think about the Jags?

SPEAKER_01

I honestly don't even know any of the Jags picks. That's how uh irrelevant I feel their draft was. I can't even name a Jags draft pick.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Um, I know they didn't they didn't have a first-round pick. That was the first time ever.

SPEAKER_02

They never had took it tight end with their first pick that not even it was more of a run blocker. Yeah, wasn't even a real receiving threat. Nate Brockmeyer. Brock kicker. Something.

SPEAKER_04

Robert Reed just thinking Brockmeyer. Two Aggies with their first pick. Yeah, yeah, no, I took Brock. I knew that was gonna happen right when I said that. I was like, oh god.

SPEAKER_01

Oh god, all I can think of is the show Brockmeyer.

SPEAKER_04

Barcatcher. Nate Barge catcher, and then uh they got and then then they got two Aggies from and then Albert Regis from uh AM at D tackle, and then they got another offensive lineman, Prejan from Oregon, uh DB, Husky. It's a I mean it's a depth draft for them. They got their splash pick last year, you know. They traded up to get out and really started doing well as soon as he got hurt. Yeah, so I mean what you're thinking there is it's he's gonna get hurt again and they'll be right back in the playoffs. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

They'll just club him in the leg like Tanya Harding style as soon as they start out one and three.

SPEAKER_04

I think he should play receiver. I I I think I've thought that from day one.

SPEAKER_01

I think he's I thought the opposite. I thought DB from day one.

SPEAKER_04

That's fine.

SPEAKER_02

And I I'd be fine with that, but I They lost ETN, right?

SPEAKER_04

Uh yeah. Yep, ETN's gone. To the Saints.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I know they got that little guy and uh was it Tank Bigsby? Is he still there? I kind of wonder about what they're gonna do with Big Bang.

SPEAKER_04

They didn't draft a running back. Yeah. So they're happy with what they have. And um they might pick up one in free agency. Um but the Bucks, I know that you like the Bucks draft with the Hurricanes.

SPEAKER_01

I love the Bucks draft, man. I love the Bucks draft. Uh I mean, almost, I mean, dude, Ruben Bain was the I I know this is definitely biased, but I've been saying it on this podcast for three goddamn years. Ruben Bain was the best defensive lineman in this draft. I don't care about his T-Rex arms. You watched the freaking game film, and nobody wrecked the game like Ruben Bain wrecked games. Not David Bailey, not Arvell Reese, none of these D-linemen wrecked games like Ruben Bain did. Right. And even with those short little stubby arms, man, people couldn't block him.

SPEAKER_04

He's gonna have a lot to thank to Ruben Bain. Oh, absolutely. Got a lot of single teams for Messi.

SPEAKER_01

Well, Mesador, if you look at not this past season when we made our playoff run, but the season before where Bain was injured the majority of the season, nobody knew who Mesador was when Reuben Bain wasn't on the other side.

SPEAKER_04

He's already 25. But he went in the first round as well.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but not only the Ruben Bain pick, I also I think the Bucks got, I mean, potentially the steal of the draft with Keontae Scott. Really? Keontae Scott is sick, dude. I mean, I he's another, he's a ball hawking safety that can also blitz. I mean, he can come down and play the run. I mean, Keontae Scott is just freaking awesome, dude. And like after the playoff run, I don't know how that did not improve his draft stock because during the playoffs, Keontae Scott, again, all over the field.

SPEAKER_04

Um they Jason Light, he'll draft the corners early and play him right away. So this is he he knew he knew what he was doing there. He'll probably play immediately.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, he he'll definitely play, dude. Dude, Keontae Scott is really, really good, man. I mean, he he he's everywhere, he's all over the field. Again, kind of like Jacob Rodriguez. He's a big splash play guy. Well, they got a lot of things. But he's also discipline that doesn't give up big plays.

Giants And Jets Draft Winners

SPEAKER_04

They obviously they went linebacker on in round two as well. So they went Bain, and then they got Josiah Trotter from Missouri, and then they got Ted Hurst from Georgia, and then Keontae Scott on the defense. DeMonte Cape, another D-tackle from Clemson, and then they got a guard from Notre Dame. Yeah, that's a really solid draft. Yeah. I like the Giants draft.

SPEAKER_01

Giants was another really great draft, dude. Both teams out of New York actually had a good draft. I hate to say the Jets actually had a really good draft.

SPEAKER_04

I I like Arvell Reese. I think he's uh um and then I like Francis. I like Francis. He's a big I mean he's a in a I like that a lot better. I wish the Dolphins would have got him.

SPEAKER_02

Um yeah, he's gonna be just like uh that dude for Detroit Sewell, Pinet Sewell, where you just put him at him at right tackle. Well, yeah, and he's gonna start immediately. Right.

SPEAKER_04

You put him at right tackle, road load. If you got to move him to left later on, then so be it. But you play him right there right away at right. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Even saw him catch a touchdown pass on a screen play, on a screen pass. Now we know who can do it all, dude.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he he's he's got the the athleticism that people wish Caden Proctor had. Well, you just get the relatively the same size, but but Francis can.

SPEAKER_04

I like both their first picks, and then they got um a DB out of the Omar Cooper Colton Hood in the second round, and they got Field, the wide receiver Fields.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he's Malachi Fields and the Jets. Oh, yeah, yeah, Malachi Fields, that's right. Yeah, they got him in like the fourth or something, didn't they?

SPEAKER_04

They went to the third to get that. Um, but not a bad draft for the Giants and the Jets.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I love the Jets draft, man. I mean, uh Sadiq at tight end, and they got Omar Cooper at the traded back end of the first round to get Omar Cooper at the end. I mean, like the the Jets are building out that roster so they can draft a quarterback next year.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

They're playing the long game, man.

SPEAKER_02

Right, that was probably their one iffy pick. No, I think that's a solid pick, man.

SPEAKER_04

He's a he's a block, he's a he take he eats blocks, man.

SPEAKER_02

Right, when he doesn't get run over by yeah, 50% of the time he eats blocks.

SPEAKER_04

Well, I think when he I just think he's a body man at that position. Hopefully, you he had to do a lot more at FSU than he's gonna have to do it for an NFL team.

SPEAKER_02

Right, and it's a fourth round pick, so you know, whatever. Like, yeah. And they I see him as a Kade Klubnick. Oh, they picked Cade? Oh god. Yeah. Somebody's got a good one.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we addressed Klubnick. We addressed Klubnick at the beginning of last season and how I feel about Kate Klubnick, and it looks like I was right.

SPEAKER_04

Who's the quarterback?

SPEAKER_01

Gino.

SPEAKER_04

They went to the city. Yeah, yeah, Gino.

SPEAKER_01

I was gonna say they got a placeholder guy.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, I think Klubnick might play. Maybe. I I am not, I'm out on Gino, man. Right. Well, nobody's expecting them to do anything. I just don't know why he made that.

SPEAKER_02

Well, because you got a placeholder. You gotta have somebody.

FSU Baseball Spiral And RPI Talk

SPEAKER_04

All right. There's your draft. Um, how about them Knolls, Jimmy? They went and got swept by Stanford. Yeah, they're awful. A two-one run losses and then a walk-off.

SPEAKER_02

Walk-off grand slam to uh to the sumo guy.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. They're gonna need a sweep this weekend if they're gonna have shot at hosting or what? I I don't think they're gonna host, man.

SPEAKER_02

Really? I think I think it's it, you know, I think not even the first round? No. I think they'd probably have to at best maybe lose only a game at Clemson for these next three weekend series. Um but no. They they they're playing their way into number two seed in Gainesville.

SPEAKER_04

Oh God. Right. I don't think so, man.

SPEAKER_02

I think No, I mean they're they're RPI, they're sitting at like fifteen or sixteen right now.

SPEAKER_04

You gotta assume they'll get they'll host a regional.

SPEAKER_02

No. No. It's because half the half the the the sixteen is gonna go to the SEC. So you're talking about eight slots to fill. And you gotta look at teams out west. You look at two of the teams in the Midwest that are having really good seasons this year. You look at Southern Miss, Coastal Carolina, both in the top ten. No. They would have to go eight and one over their next three weekend series.

SPEAKER_04

Well, we'll see.

SPEAKER_02

And that's not happening. Nah. That's not happening. I'd be shocked if they won the series this weekend against Pitt.

NBA Playoffs Scoreboard Check

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. It was really just sad to see. They can't hit. Miles just not gonna be able to overcome that. Alright. Well, NBA playoffs promised it. Let's update the series. Um in the East. The Orlando Magic are up 3-1 on the Pistons. There we go.

SPEAKER_01

Right!

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, how about that? Well, the Magic are getting healthy at the right time, and the Pistons were you know we're still a young team. They haven't really played a lot of playoff basketball. It's a different season.

SPEAKER_02

Cade Cunningham has just done nothing but turn the ball over, man.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. That defense the Magic uh played the last few years where you didn't see this year's points, it has now showed up in the series. They need one more.

SPEAKER_01

And they've still they've still been playing without Franz.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, well, Franz, no Franz came back, but he was he didn't play in the fourth quarter. He's back out again. Game time decisions. Oh boy. Yeah. Well, that was a big difference because they matched him up uh in spots on Cunningham. He was able to shut him down. Over in let's uh in the other series in the east, you have the Celtics and the Sixers. The Sixers actually won in Boston down 3-1, but they took the game in uh Boston handily. So that one's 3-2 now, going back to Philly.

SPEAKER_03

Uh you got um Knicks, Knicks, Hawks is that tie to two or I'm not even sure. Oh, I know.

SPEAKER_04

What are you talking about? Nobody pays attention to the Knicks. Yeah, a lot of people do. I know. It's a joke. No, the Knicks actually won game five. They're up three-two. And then uh 3-2 Boston, and then Minnesota has a 3-2 lead over the Nuggets. Um, they lost both their starting guards, though. The Timberwolves did.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, they didn't go last.

SPEAKER_04

I see the Nuggets coming back in that one. And then the Lakers are up 3-1. Watch out there.

SPEAKER_01

With no Luca and no Austin Reeves, man, that's crazy.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. See if they're able to hold on.

SPEAKER_01

You know, it's I mean, dude, the Rockets were everybody's darling coming into this season with that young talent, and then they brought in KD, and then they show up and they can't beat a 45-year-old LeBron James with a bunch of scrubs.

SPEAKER_02

LeBron's out there giving it his off. Playing directly basketball. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And as much as I hate LeBron James. Oh, I hate LeBron James, you gotta give him so much credit for basically carrying this team into the second round. Yeah. Dude, that that's here. We gotta uh shuttle.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, sorry, man. We gotta go. Yeah. Oh, yeah. What were you saying? Saying is Bron's. Oh, the Bron? Yeah, the Bron. Yeah, man, he's good. Spurs Advance. Spurs advance. Um that's looking to be a showdown. OKC swept. So that they have one more round to get through. We'll see if uh Denver will probably get the Spurs. That'd be a good one. Yeah, and then um Dev.

SPEAKER_02

Whoever Toronto's playing. Who they playing? Scavs.

SPEAKER_04

There you go. That'll be your man. The Raptors were able to tie that series up. That that's tonight, they'll have game five. And then Sun and then Nuggets. Who's the four or five in the West? Rockets, Lakers. That's right. 3-1 Lakers. There you have it, folks. What else did we miss? Anything else?

Tournament Expansion And Bigger Brackets

SPEAKER_02

Nah, man. I think that's it. I don't even think there are any other sports. Well, there are.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, yeah. The bat the tournament's gonna go to 76.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, going to 76 teams now. All right. We got a shot.

SPEAKER_01

God, I hate that. I hate it so much, man. They're taking like the most perfect thing in sports and fucking it up.

SPEAKER_04

Well, that's it was inevitable, man. Right. And then when you think about it, though, there's a lot of teams. They're gonna do it to everything. It'll still be dramatic. It'll still be people on the bubble.

SPEAKER_02

You're still gonna have Danny Hurley headbutting referees once you get the final four weekends. That fucking psychic.

SPEAKER_04

College football, that's the next one to expand.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, that that that sport stupid. It's the dumbest sport of all time.

SPEAKER_04

Nobody even cares about college football until I'm I'm I'm ready for hoops, man. Right. Transfer portal finished.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. We got our guys. Lost Basong at the end. He's in Mississippi State now.

SPEAKER_04

Miami got some guys.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

Transfer Portal Notes And Sign-Off

SPEAKER_04

I like both the coaches there. I think basketball programs are gonna be good. They're gonna be upper echelon ACC programs, I think, in the future. Yeah. But we'll see it. We'll watch it. We'll react to it. And we'll talk to you next time, right here on the North Florida Sports Network.

SPEAKER_00

You gotta give us a shot. You know what?
