Summer Sports Kickoff And Agenda
SPEAKER_02Let me ask you one question.
SPEAKER_01The notes blow this bowl floor this bowl floor the notes blow this bowl.
SPEAKER_00You gotta give us a shot, you know what?
SPEAKER_05Summer rolls through. The World Cup is about to start. We're gonna look forward to that. Special 3D. So we gotta take a look back at baseball season. And then we have our final eight baseball. Over the final eight oh mall, NBA finals is eating up. 2-1 right now, next in control. Get to some recruiting. Some college football. Yeah. So catch up.
College World Series Bracket Talk
SPEAKER_05The College World Series said half the bracket is the SEC. Oklahoma, Alabama, Georgia, and Texas.
SPEAKER_03And then the other side, North Carolina. Oh miss Troy in West Virginia. Troy. Now didn't I sit here on this podcast and tell you that Troy was a giant just waiting in the wings? No. Sleeping monster.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. They took Mercer's spot. No.
SPEAKER_03Hey, listen, they they listened and they took my words personally. And they met the challenge. Now they're in the College World Series. Right. First time ever playing another team that's making their first ever trip in West Virginia.
SPEAKER_05Who do you like?
SPEAKER_03Uh, I mean, overall, I I don't know, man. Texas, Georgia. Who cares? It'll be somebody from the SEC.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Maybe North Carolina. Probably not, but whatever.
SPEAKER_05Well, they have a favorable matchup on that side of the bracket. Being that they should be able to get to the championship game. Maybe.
SPEAKER_03You gotta start off playing Ole Miss.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, like the ACC is not. Yeah. How many teams they sent to the postseason? Like nine? One of them still left.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03You only added two of them make supers. Wait, one make a super regional. That's right. Georgia Tech got beat. Yeah, they got walked off by Oklahoma.
SPEAKER_05That was. I mean, what you knew what would get them would be the pitching. Didn't know it would be as bad as it was.
SPEAKER_03I really didn't see anybody beating them twice. That that's crazy to me. Um, but yeah, yeah, the pitching killed him. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Florida State lost at home to St. John's twice.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, it wasn't even an instance of, you know, not playing well. St. John's
Florida State’s Baseball Fallout
SPEAKER_03better.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Better at winning when it counts. And then got smoked by Alabama. It you know, just disappointing into the season, but you knew once Miles got hurt that it was gonna be tough.
SPEAKER_05So what's next for this team?
SPEAKER_03Well, there's it's a lot of um turnover. Yeah, a lot. You got maybe I think maybe three lineup guys from the lineup that are that are gonna be back next year as it stands. Um there'll be a lot of new faces. I it I don't expect Miles Bailey to be back.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um I imagine he'll get over seven figures to sign, and and you might as well go ahead and take that because your arbitration starts. Yeah. So we'll see, man. We'll see. I'm gonna have to figure something out. Know a lot more once the draft rolls around next month. See who they're gonna actually be able to get on campus.
SPEAKER_05Alright. Yeah! Baseball.
Recruiting Fatigue And NIL Reality
SPEAKER_05Baseball is over. So, what's going on in college football and recruiting world? What's up?
SPEAKER_03Uh recruiting world, it is pretty much not even worth paying attention to.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yep. Um you know, same, same, same old.
SPEAKER_05It's just gonna get worse and worse, isn't it?
SPEAKER_03Right. If you if you don't have money, you need to be able to sell on field success or some kind of positive momentum. On the flip side, if you you don't have any on-field success or positive momentum, you need to have a shitload of NIL coming. Florida State has neither.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um, so they're just pretty much a non-factor going forward. I think they're like the 50th ranked class right now. Who cares? Like I said, there's no no recruits or anything like that that's gonna get me excited about this coming football season. Um I remain where I always have been with this guy. I'm just hoping he gets fired in week seven. The big news out of college football Brendan Soresby, who had been declared ineligible because he
Gambling Injunction And NCAA Power Vacuum
SPEAKER_03was gambling, betting on football, two previous stops. Yeah. Texas Tech quarterback has now been granted an injunction by a local judge that will allow him to play, be eligible this season. Now he still suspended the first two games. The Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire says that it's not a foregone conclusion that he'll be back for game three, which to me is just lip service, you know, trying to cover his ass on that. Um but the rest of the college football world is is appalled. You know, Big Ten Commissioner, Big Ten athletic directors, big twelve athletic directors all over the country. You know, they're crying foul.
SPEAKER_05So well, this is I mean, the bed that they sleep in.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_05For me, it's kind of there's really no any time, any type of deal that you have the SEC and the Big Ten want the Congress to get involved, but then when they hear the idea, they're like, no, they don't they don't want to hear any of that Sharon Poole. Right.
SPEAKER_03Well, and and what they're really angry at is that you know the NCAA has no power to do anything, but this is what they wanted to begin with. You know, they were tired of playing by the NCAA's rules. So it's just gonna be whatever judge you can get. Right. And and for me, it's like, yeah, you know, he's he he did. He broke an NCAA rule. So it it you know, if they if they still ran things, then he would be ineligible, but they don't run things, they have to run things. Right. And it it's not news, it's just and for me, like all the athletic directors that are that are sitting here and bitching about it. Um, like, dude, they what are you what are you afraid of? Like they talking about they don't want to play Texas Tech, you know, this banned all our athletic programs from from competing versus Texas. Listen, dude, the one that's taking the risk is Texas Tech. You play a kid that gambles on football, that can only hurt you. He's not gonna go out there and and you know, he's not Clark Kent and like, all right, all of a sudden I'm gonna use my superpowers and see that we win. The only thing that impacts is losing games.
SPEAKER_05Look. I think it's polarized because of what it used to mean.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_05And this generation of kids grow up betting is so out in the open. I mean, you have gambling sites sponsoring college football games.
SPEAKER_03Right. He has a b he has a problem. He he is a textbook gambling addict, like problematic gambling.
SPEAKER_05And so yeah, I It's almost like you can't do it's not fair to do anything because you haven't agreed upon anything. So you're almost just like a free person to do whatever the hell you want as long as you're not breaking any laws.
SPEAKER_03Right, right. And they he did he did break laws, so there's still that aspect that's remaining, it's out there, it hasn't been resolved yet.
SPEAKER_04But to that effect, like this is just gonna use I'm just gonna use the bargaining.
SPEAKER_05This is why this is just another example of when you have all these schools, all these conferences, all trying to eat, but they have no rules, they can't agree on any kind of right, any kind of set rules. Any kind of they that's what they have to do. It's a league.
SPEAKER_03I mean, you have you have schools that play athletes that are either directly or indirectly involved with people dying.
SPEAKER_05You need to have salary cap, you need to have Yeah.
SPEAKER_03It it it needs to be run like
A Blueprint For Fixing College Football
SPEAKER_03a pro league because that's what it is now.
SPEAKER_05Rules, you need to have guidelines, discipl disciplinary guidelines that are set forth and agreed upon by all the people that are playing in the league. Yeah. And it's just gonna make the product better. And until that happens, you're I mean, you're gonna push it. It's still college football with all the passions.
SPEAKER_03It's still what's holding that up is they want to cap the earning ability of players. And that's never gonna fly. Well, if they have the coaches, but you want to make them employees and stop this this this myth that they're student athletes like everybody else. Yes. Right.
SPEAKER_05Then we can talk about it.
SPEAKER_03You have to have a cap.
SPEAKER_05Right. So you can pay all, you can pay, give it all to one player if you want. Right, right. But there has to, it's not a cap on the player, it's a cap on the team. That's the easiest way to do it, is make them employees. Like, hey, making employees, this is the cap you have to do for the employees. Here's your coach's pool, too. Shit. You want to make one for coaches, make one for players. Here's the money that you you can't go over.
SPEAKER_03Right. And no matter what, no matter what a player is making, you know, minimum, league, league minimum, whatever, they still get every every employee gets that benefit.
SPEAKER_05When other than that, it's pro wrestling. Yeah, that's all it is right now. I mean, because you're just having TV networks backing on the and it's not even even current pro wrestling. It's and honestly, they don't this these are just these conference align, like just get rid of the conferences.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, they don't need them. Exactly. Like like in pro wrestling.
SPEAKER_05I don't understand conferences in the old days when they had territories. Now you have playoffs, have divisions, right? Have divisions. If you want to do that, that's fine. Because it's regional and whatever. Yeah. But then you have playoffs and do it like that. You don't need conferences. This is just it's stupid. It's just another way for people to get people that have it don't want to give it up. Right, because they're getting money. They're getting filthy rich. They're getting the money, but they're getting more than the other schools. They don't want to have to share it with other schools. No. But why do you have why do you get to share it with schools that are in your own conference that shouldn't get that much anyway? Well, that that's so just like go out if you just have it where every school is out there. And they make agreements to the each network.
SPEAKER_03Right. That's what's if the networks were the ones driving it, being like, you know what, Big Ten, you know what, SEC, we don't want to pay you anymore unless you guys just go regional and and we're just gonna pay that. We're gonna, you know, we're gonna have northeast divisions, Midwest divisions, and that's what Fox is gonna pay. ESPN, we're gonna have the South and the Southwest and the West Coast. Like, we're gonna pay that. And then they'd be like, all right, cool. As long as we're still getting money, as long as we're still getting that that big check. That's not going away. But it's not gonna get rid of that. It's not. Because they, you know, ESP when ESPN got involved and bought the SEC, like, all right, we have an interest in the SEC being this mythical beast in every single sport. Just the the best athletic conference there is because it will be ESPN's athletic conference. And we're the worldwide leader in sports, so we're gonna have the best athletic conference. We're just gonna sit here S in our own D over and over again. That's that's that's all it is. It's not getting any better.
SPEAKER_05No, not fixing this shit. You at least have to have the illusion. Even if it's like they say they all the conspiracies with the NFL, that that they could be all be true, right? But they do have the illusion that they have rules and they have a draft. Yeah. And enough to where you can buy competitive interest. And when you don't, you know, you can get angry at certain decisions and be like, well, damn it, this was a bad move. We shouldn't have done that. Yeah. You know, instead of just being able to throw money at it again and again and again.
SPEAKER_03Right. Or it's insane to me that there's actually something that is more corrupt and run worse than the NFL. And it that's college sports. Every single college.
SPEAKER_05Well, that's because they didn't take care of it.
SPEAKER_03Right. They there's no oversight, nobody's in charge.
SPEAKER_05No, well, they they ruined it by letting it get to where it got. And then once the the once that Ed Obannon case went, it was that was it. Yeah, the day the NCAA finally that that you would have had rules in place where you made a guy like that not ever even think about it.
SPEAKER_03Or just actually been like, you know what, he's right. He was exploited. We do need to like figure out a way to make these guys. No, Miles Brandt just just doubled down on it. Right. And then when he finally got beat in court, he got butthurt and just said, you know what, fine, we're not gonna do anything. You guys figure it out for yourselves. It's like, dude, like it was either he he he said, it's either my way or we're not doing shit. We're just gonna be a faceless, powerless organization that puts our logo on stuff.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So here we are. And the billionaires took over.
SPEAKER_05We well they didn't it just says the egos of these people in charge. I'm not being able to foresee that and come up with something, because I I I it it shouldn't be as bad as it is. No. And if you would have if you would have started this decades ago, you would have it would have, it would have, it would have morphed into something where you it would have came out of their own creation and they would have all agreed upon it.
SPEAKER_03And you like do you watch it?
SPEAKER_05Now we're backwards now, so now we gotta go through all this crap until it might it might never be fixed. Yeah, I don't see a good thing. I just don't I don't see because it's gonna be as long as you're paying the players and you don't have any kind of competitive balance. I mean, what what are we doing here? Right.
SPEAKER_03I mean, seriously, what are we doing here? And a guy like Nick Saban goes in front of Congress and bitches about paying players, but he's missing the point.
SPEAKER_04It's the coaches, yes.
SPEAKER_03Right, but it's like, dude, you're you're you're sitting here talking about the dangers of the rising cost of paying these players.
SPEAKER_05That's because there's way more players, right?
SPEAKER_03But it's also like, dude, you're not saying, hey, we need to make them employees and have X amount of dollars, but have every single player take care of.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, like I'm getting, I'm a I'm an employee, I have all these things. They need to be employees.
SPEAKER_03I don't know why they're they are right, and like Nick, Nick, how much money did you make a season coaching? Like it kept going up. How how much money are you paying? Are they paying Signeti? And he knows it. He's like, dude, this thing's cooked in a couple years. Like, there's gonna be four teams playing each other over and over again. That's it.
SPEAKER_05Done. I mean Miami versus Indiana.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you'll get you'll get one one team.
SPEAKER_05Ohio State versus Miami.
SPEAKER_03Right. The teams with billionaires, you know, and Texas Tech's not going anywhere. That dude's worth $30 billion and damn damn sure set on spending money as long as he has to. It just doesn't.
SPEAKER_05It's it's but I mean you you gotta do it, but you gotta make him employees. Right. That's all. And you give them all like nobody's buying into that anyway, so no one's gonna nobody's gonna it's not gonna change anything. If anything, it's just gonna make it more of a sport.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_05You can sell it even more.
SPEAKER_03Exactly. You cap the amount of money each school can spend on rosters and on athletes, you but every single athlete has health insurance.
SPEAKER_05You could take the transfer portal and make it some sort of event like the draft, you know, and try to make some sort of like oh that would solve the transfer portal problem too. Yeah, you take it and make it some sort of TV event, right? And it's like, you know what, it's a league. You could trade, you could trade. What about that? College trades? Why not? Hey, if they're under contract, I mean that's what I'm saying. Like, we're but instead we're doing all this BS where you can transfer every single year without getting anything, yeah, and you're paying all this money, and then you can get no return on it. Right. So when at least, like, hey, this guy's not working out, but hey, let's move him over here and we'll get this guy that they got. We talk to their, you know, coaches know each other. Yeah. This, I don't that's why you have coaches that are to get out of it.
SPEAKER_03They go to the NFL to be a coordinator.
SPEAKER_05Just give me a word, coach. I don't have to worry about that. We have a GM, they have and GMs and agents, right? They do that. They deal with that. And then the players and the coaches show up on the rules they all agreed upon.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_05And and then I have to, you know, and then we get to have our little practice where we sit.
SPEAKER_03I don't have to worry about whether or not a player is there to actually. And if he's late, I can find him. Right. I can find his ass. Yeah. If he sucks, I can tell him he sucks and that he's not playing instead of playing him every week. But now it's it's so ridiculous.
SPEAKER_05N I L. Yeah. Open market. And what's I mean, what is it that is keeping them from being employees? Is it just the traditional schools don't want to pay for it? They don't want to pay for all the well, you gotta give them health insurance.
SPEAKER_03You gotta get everything that you get in the NFL as an employee, as as you know, well, why can't the same money that why can't the TV networks pay for it?
SPEAKER_05Because they can, but that's what to. Yeah, but that's that's who needs to pay for it. Right. Because that's who you guys are selling, right? You're paying, they're your employees, you're putting them on the screen, yeah, to hit each other, so why don't you pay for it?
SPEAKER_03Right. Or you know what, like all the schools that are that are building hundreds of millions of dollars worth of facilities and and fancy cool stuff. Well, that's because that was the old way to do it. Right. But again, like eventually you'll generate that much money again in a couple of years, especially if you're a Big Ten school, your TV contract's gonna give you about Well, that's what that money has to go, that money has to be delegated to those type of things first. Right.
SPEAKER_05And it it and I would just say the athletes are the ones you take it out however you want to take it out, whatever school, whatever. But it it's gotta come out. And it's gotta go back into the guy. Right. The men and women that are actually yeah, all on a they agree upon it as a league. You're playing, it's there. Right. It's really not that complicated. Yeah, like you still have a job in school, right? You still not that complicated at all, it's not that complicated, but again, like somebody's gonna lose money here. Like there's a couple people like down the road that are like Yeah, it's
SPEAKER_03It's networks. It's like, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, dude. I'm not hold on. I got three houses. You telling me I might have to give one of them up? Yeah. Cause because nah. Screw that. We'll just we'll let it die. And you know, I'm an old misgrad. I like the fact that we can buy players.
SPEAKER_05Well, they just they know that it's because people are gonna wa the people are still watching it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. We'll see how long it takes. We'll see how long it takes. I mean, I'm you know, I'll still watch it, even though I don't give a shit about it.
SPEAKER_05That's what I it's just gonna be a long, slow, slow death because money drives everything. So as long as the TV people are still being able to sell the ad dollars, right? Then they're still gonna push whatever. And that's why it'll be the the the two conferences. But once you turn that the other way, if you say, you know what, this is stupid. Not not saying it's stupid, I'm just saying it's not the NFL. Like this is competitive sports, man. Yeah. What do I want to watch this pre-arranged contest where one side has all these things, and it doesn't have to be, oh, they have all these things. No, they both have good players, they both have coaches, things can happen, it's gonna be who's better. Right. It would mean even more.
SPEAKER_03Right, it'd be better. You used a wrestling analogy. Eventually, it was just WCW and WWF.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Because when they had all the territories, like, well, we start running out of money, we gotta sell out to Vince. Yep, we gotta sell out to Ted. Yep. That's the SEC and the Big Ten. Yep.
SPEAKER_05Until well, that was the AFL and the NFL. Yeah. So they're gonna that that's down the line.
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_05And whatever the stragglers are, they'll they'll join whatever. And you can call it the Big Ten or the SEC, but whatever. Just call it divisions. Right.
SPEAKER_03And the ones that don't want to buy in, you guys go be ECW. Play a little, play a little footy football on your uh But that's stupid, man.
SPEAKER_05That's the glory of football, though. It's a yeah, it's the league, it's the league and one in the glory of the title. And they killed it. And having what everyone wants and covets, but now it's just becoming they killed it. Like an auction.
SPEAKER_03Right. So hey man, at least we got to watch three national titles.
SPEAKER_05It's more than a lot of people. Well, the SEC didn't like it. They loved it when they could just pay under the table. Yeah. They were dominating like nobody else. Right. Because these Big Ten schools, they don't care that much.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_05And they're not gonna do that. They don't have the they don't they just don't have that. You look at a guy like Nick Saban. But once the once the NIO went out, boom. Yeah. Even playing field. It's like, oh, we'll spend money, you know. Right. We'll have we have lawyers and stuff that we'll just hire to do that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we got we got a guy that's got fucking 120 billion dollars. He'll pay for whatever. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like, oh, that's not fair.
SPEAKER_03We don't want to cheat.
SPEAKER_05So they didn't do that. Right. But once it's legal, but when Indiana just won, yeah, they're not. So instead of having Clemson versus Alabama, right?
SPEAKER_03Church versus church. That's the whole ironic thing. It's like when Saban was at Michigan State, a school that didn't cheat, couldn't do it. He couldn't beat Purdue.
SPEAKER_05I mean, that was it. That was, I mean, down in the South. Right. I'm gonna go to LH. It mattered more, but still it was more fun that way. Yeah. Because they were still, you had to, you know, you couldn't go crazy because you still had this. Right, because there were rules.
SPEAKER_03If you got popped for paying somebody too much.
SPEAKER_05You gotta have rules now. Now that the cat's out of the bag, you gotta have rules.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_05And they're just gonna sue and sue and sue, and then like, we'll just you gotta agree upon it. And then if you get players that don't want to play, good luck. You don't have to cat. Let them go to the NFL, too. Right. If they're 18 and they went and they want and then get drafted, and some team wants to draft them, let them go. Right?
SPEAKER_03Like dude, Jeremiah Smith, I mean, this is a kid would have gone top five this year.
SPEAKER_05Right. I don't understand.
SPEAKER_03Shit, he might have gone number one overall. Yeah. That it whatever, man. It just That's all I got. Fart noise for football, man.
SPEAKER_05I mean, you say that, and I I will ask Justin about it, being, you know, he's a Miami fan and they're doing really well. But does it compare? No, it makes a difference.
SPEAKER_03No, it makes a difference, man. It makes a difference. I'm sure it's fun and have teams of fans that have money and and can compete, they're gonna they, you know, they'll be like, yeah, it sucks, but I'm still, you know, let's eat it up. Yeah, I'll eat it up. Ohio State fans, they'll eat it up, dude. It doesn't mean as much.
SPEAKER_05No. I mean, you're buying your team. I mean, I'm damn I I would be glad if I was one of I'm just right.
SPEAKER_03If we had a billionaire, it'd be great, man. If Florida State had somebody just throwing money and we could go pay $10 million for a really good quarterback and all that, it'd be great. But we don't.
SPEAKER_05So, all right, cool. I guess. Well the fact that you even have the billionaire admitting that it's kind of like BS. Right. But I'm gonna do it. So see that like that that's where it comes in. Like the but that's like investing in business. But this is not a business, it's supposed to be a sport, and now it's just you didn't you didn't regulate it, and now it's just a right, it's gonna keep going up, man.
SPEAKER_03It's crazy, man. Forty, forty, fifty million dollar rosters are the thing this year.
SPEAKER_04So what's the last roster this year? LSU?
SPEAKER_03Probably Texas. Not LSU, Texas. Well, yeah. Texas, dude. That guy's so desperate to win anything. And it they won't, they won't, it'll be the same thing. Like they that's that's what you'll figure out, is like, you know, it it it we can see.
SPEAKER_05You have to have the money, but still, that's just to get in. Right. And you still have to wait. Well, you got a guy, you have to have somebody race and beat the other people in the channel.
SPEAKER_03And you have to have somebody in charge that knows how to spend the money the right way.
SPEAKER_05Right. Exactly. So there's still things to watch and there's still things to compete upon, even more. It makes this sport even better. And I they but I don't see any end in insight. Not anytime soon.
SPEAKER_02We had to go. Our rod was here. We gotta uh shuttle.
SPEAKER_05Well, shuttle tag. We gotta get on out of here.
NBA Finals Check In
SPEAKER_05NBA finals. Oh big one tonight. Yep. Luke was a game three. No home team has won. Luke Laux. Coach Laux, yeah. Well, the sells in there.
SPEAKER_03Ah, it's his boy, De'Aaron Fox. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and he's got a guy.
SPEAKER_03I know it, but it Fox dude flew him out to his honeymoon, man, to work out with him. Nice.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, like that's well, he's getting a lot of money. Makes like 50 a year.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So it's gonna be a big
World Cup Preview And Wrap
SPEAKER_03one.
SPEAKER_05Wu Tang. Also got the biggest sporting event in the whole world about to get underway. We're gonna I need to look into that. We might do that next time. What kind of chances do the US have? I know they're in the same group as Australia. Alright. Joe. It's not. They're favored to get out of the group, but it's it's like one of those eight-nine type of things. But you could not, you could easily not make the elimination round. But I think they should. They will. We'll see.
SPEAKER_03We'll see. Favorites, France, Spain. You mean all the teams that have been doing it forever? England. Argentina. What about Jamaica? How's your squad, man? Oh. What about the Welsh? It's Wales.
SPEAKER_05I don't think they know it.
SPEAKER_03No?
SPEAKER_05We're gonna hold on, man. We're gonna get into all the groups. It's the biggest World Cup ever. The knockout round will be 32 instead of 16. Oh, okay. So the biggest field ever. The couple of three countries across North America. We'll go over it. Expansions. We got the NBA finals. We'll finish that up. We'll react to that. And we'll try to make sense of all the craziness in college football. It all sucks. Talk to you next time. Right here on the North Voters.
SPEAKER_00You gotta give us a shot. You know what?
