Quarterback Outlook And Backup Battle
SPEAKER_00for FSU woo Jesus try to figure out who the hell is gonna be playing on this team and what uh what can we expect so alright it's gonna be fun yeah fun let's start right off at quarterback you know who the quarterback is yeah but I'm gonna treat this as I don't know anybody and you're gonna tell me who it's gonna it's gonna be Ashton Daniels okay um they paid for him they're not gonna not start him hope to God he's better than what he was at Stanford and Auburn what kind of quarterback is Ashton Daniels I mean he's you know he's he's a lot more like the Jordan Travis Thomas Casolanos brand of quarterback dual threat I don't think he's got I mean he doesn't have the speed is either one of those guys but he's bigger he's bigger uh you know he's experienced and that's about all you got there man I mean I I don't know it's a mixed bag if you look at his time at Stanford So let's go over what do you got behind him behind him well you got Deuce Robinson that's your you know he's if there is another guaranteed starter on the team or on the offense after Daniels it's Deuce Robinson he's healthy he's gonna be out there he's gonna be your main threat in the passing game you got Danzi back look for him to be more of a complete receiver this year not just you know deep throws and and end of rounds and stuff but that again that's real Olympic speed that you have at the receiver position then you got a bunch of question marks guy like Wade J Von Box some of the freshmen Devin Carter Jason Lopez you know some of the kids that redshirted last year to Sean Gelsey Gesley Gelsey whatever his name is I don't know um so let's go back to quarterback I wanted to finish that up real quick when it comes to the backup who are the guys I see Malachi Marshall and Kevin Sperry tell me about those guys well you know about Sperry's been here um he can play a little bit I don't think you know everybody was why don't we just hand the reins over to Sperry?
SPEAKER_01Why are we taking a transfer QB? I mean there's a reason you know the kid may have some talent but he's nowhere near ready to be a primetime quarterback you know he's gonna have to learn you start him if he's starting expect more you know growing pains Marshall Malachi Marshall Juco kid got a really live arm very very tiny in terms of weight I think he's about 175 pounds maybe if that 6'1 he's a kid that can move around a little bit but again his arm is probably the best of the three in terms of pushing the ball downfield it's just how much is he gonna get accustomed uh anxious to see who's gonna be coming out with that second team that's gonna be a big spot right that that's the battle right there is between those two to see who's gonna be I'd like to see one of them take the lit take the reins there because yeah because I mean you know you've got to find something to build around it'd be nice to not have to go and and pay a hundred or one point eight million for a QB that's a giant question mark every year. Yep
Receivers And Playmaker Predictions
SPEAKER_01so and then you I mean so let's go to running back running back you got this might be one of your better positions. Yeah you got Chroma coming back singleton apparently those two have looked the best um the transfer Wisner from Texas he'll probably be your third you know that'll be that three headed monster and then maybe the freshman from Bluntstown but hopefully there's a lot less rotation of running backs this year. You know the guy gets hot you stick with the hot hand instead of just bringing in a new running back every series but I think that the main two that you'll see at least what it sounds like right now are going to be Chroma and Singleton.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01So and then you have the the transfer Wisner to you were just he's kind of um sort of your gadget back you know they've always you think I gotta go back in Memphis when Norvell was at Memphis and he had a that Kenneth Gainwell guy who's kind of a jack of all trades um that's I think that's how they're looking to use Wisner. So it and again you got Danzi who's kind of your wild card he came in as a running back they moved him receiver I wouldn't be surprised to see right now he's probably your other receiver that's starting at opposite Deuce Robinson.
SPEAKER_00Yeah and we we know that you got a Deuce Robinson you'd like to see more sure hands maybe right next year but yeah you know if he continues on the projection he's been going with you know you could see him be a first round pick if he yeah I mean the size and the speed combination is is he can if he can show that he can snatch that ball you know and score.
SPEAKER_01I mean if he cuts down on the drop like you know you you take half the drops away from last year he's probably not coming back right he's probably going top two rounds um so all right so let's go behind those two guys who are the who's who's behind that who's in the depth you got tayshawn kelsey he's another big body another big body receiver um you know they the Lorne McCoy took off he's at Louisville now so they're really looking for that that middle of the field guy crossing route like Javon Boggs you know he got a lot of hype going into the season last year couldn't quite put it together you know had some injury issues he's a guy they want to see step up to the the two freshmen though Devin Carter and Jason Lopez Devin Carter it sounds like they're gonna be factors like they're gonna get on the field um and honestly you know with the the reputation they had coming out of high school that they they should why not yeah you have to get the playmakers on the field look what Malachi Tony was able to do as a freshman I mean if you got it you got it and you've got to find someone right and that the you know wide receiver is a is a position where they need people to step up.
SPEAKER_00So that's the guy to watch Devin Carter um Jason Lopez the basketball player
Running Backs And Tight End Roles
SPEAKER_00yeah he's the I mean I re I know it's practice reports and but it the players themselves talk about him.
SPEAKER_01It's like this this kid is you guys are going to be surprised.
SPEAKER_00You have your guys then you have your guys like Deuce Robinson and then the backup for him Tayshawn Gelsey but the other guys all are guys that you won't be surprised where they touch the ball you could see him coming out of the backfield lining up in the slot.
SPEAKER_01Yeah and these are interchangeable and that's what you want to be able to do try to get these guys in space right I think tight end is is a spot that will also factor in into this passing game. You got uh let's go to there Desario Ryles the transfer from East Carolina they like him he he was banged up a little bit in the spring um they're excited about getting him back and you know Chase Lofton Landon Thomas yeah you got Landon Thomas but I you know if you get anything out of him great but I'm not like at this point I'm looking at the other two guys right seeing what they can give me and Chase Lofton was getting playing time last year as a true freshman until he got hurt that's another kid another big body target he can you know he can move from that tight end position so you may even see him kind of in that slot flanked out a little bit so that that you know let's get into where it's going to be decided this year and that's up front on the line they lose a lot of guys from last year this is pretty much right did see what you can put together it's what Florida State is now is go and piece together an offensive line from the transfer portal.
Offensive Line Rebuild Through Transfers
SPEAKER_01At center you got Braden Welsh joyner. Yep transfer there Chavez Thompson is a guy in his second year they just want you know eventually Thompson's gonna be the guy but he's got to keep adding size joyner is a powerful kid. Nate Paps yeah looks like he's gonna get the nod at right guard right you know you have Andre Otto who you liked yeah I mean I I you know the kid's a big strong kid need him to step up this year.
SPEAKER_00Yeah you know I know he loves Florida State and but he it it's time for him to you know make that make it count yeah and then uh Xavier Chaplin at the left tackle position yep transferred from Auburn originally from Virginia Tech this is the kid that you know I I like his backup I like Jonathan Daniels yeah not a lot of experience I but where's Dan what's Daniels where is he from is he out of high school he's out of high school he's he's out of Pensacola you know when you look at the backups there there's a lot of and then yeah like Chim Dia Yeah I don't know how to say his name that's another WaWu Waiwo and Paul Bowling like another transfer I mean it it's you know if it were baseball it's a bunch of guys to be named later that they've kind of just gone and collected through the transfer portal Chaplin was a big one at left tackle yeah but that they went and made a focal point to get him yeah um so you got to keep him but there's power there's power at the guards man these kids are big big strong guys you hope that they can move so the offense can kind of function honestly like I don't really see a huge well you need the guards to step up two guys that have been here yeah you know you need them to really show that physicality and maturity to really lead this unit if you can get Chaplin to stay healthy and then you have Otto and Pat's that can right live up to that potential tell me a little bit about the center well he I he's another kid that's that's Brian Wells joiner big kid big strong kid I think he's from uh shit hold on I got it here I want to say Auburn no he's from Auburn to high school that's where he went to high school I believe he signed with yeah so he he he signed at Auburn originally transferred last year to Purdue and we went and got him from Purdue again so Auburn Purdue now to Florida State right and that's kind of a theme with your transfers on the offensive line they're journeymen you know guys that have played a lot multiple schools business like approach at offensive line you know just go out there and do it do your job everybody do your job you know like I don't see any reason that right right out of boom's mouth I don't see any reason why the offense should take a drastic step back from last year like you you look at the guys that actually performed you know you lost you lose Sawchuk but hopefully you can you can make that up you know singleton's back chroma's back you brought Wit Wisner in looking at Ashton Daniels man right you you can't well need to be hero yeah and Castellanos was a mixed bag you got I want to see easy plays made I want to see flow I want to see the right decision I don't want to see trying to make huge plays those will those will happen yeah I I'd like to see you know the right read maybe the guy breaks a tackle and runs it's a little bit a little bit more middle of the field in the pack I want to see more consistency to be able to let that defense rest who's going to be the question mark as we go to that side of the
Defensive Front Questions And Scheme Shift
SPEAKER_00ball.
SPEAKER_01Yeah that's a giant question mark man um mainly because you you don't really know what what the scheme is going to look like uh you know you there's gonna be 335 there's gonna be a four man front at times and you've gotten smaller on the on the defensive line you know no more Daryl Jackson I think you got one guy that's over 300 pounds and Kevin Wynne and he's very inexperienced though highly touted coming out of high school you paid for the the Desir twins to come back you hope that they can build on what they did last year you got some guys like Daniel Lyons and you know Demontre diggs that need to actually put some production up so that that to me that's where the question is oh yeah is on the defensive line. The secondary like it I'm cautiously optimistic with the secondary especially the safety position I mean you're gonna be playing three safeties most of the time and three down your three starting you'll probably go with Kennedy from Texas AM. Right well he'll be the pass rush guy Daniel Lyons and win in the middle and then that'll be your three man front and you have DeSur and McCrae you still got McCrae yeah you got McCrae you got digs you got I mean bunch of guys in the 280 290 range um they I guess they wanted to get a little bit biggest question mark of all the units on defense yeah okay so let's go to the secondary which is hard to believe we're knowing the history of our linebackers what you would say well I mean I it it it's not so much a question anymore with the linebackers like I kind of expect them to be you know I know we we brought in Chris Jones um you brought in another guy from from Nebraska Gabor so you got condor condarius jones right and Nehemiah Chandler the kid from Waucula and then you have Dabrille Rawls Charles Lester we'd like to see Lester to do something.
Secondary Stability And Linebacker Wild Cards
SPEAKER_00You would you you'd like to see him actually and then do something safety you got Mikai Jones yeah the transfer from Duke and then CJ CJ Ricard Ashland Barker to have a really big year.
SPEAKER_01Yeah Barker's Barker's you know he's the guy that's got to be your leader out there CJ Ricard is has really been turning heads he's another transfer and then KJ Kirkland as well yeah KJ Kirkland he's he's an experienced guy so the depth's the problem there on defense depth yeah I like the safety position I think might be what should be solid. I think that's probably going to be your most solid unit on defense. Linebacker you have experience now athletically you may be limited with some of that experience.
SPEAKER_00Jones is a tackling machine but he's also a blockier athlete you know he's not going to be some kind of speed demon I mean you still have Blake Nicholson as depth but you're looking at uh Gaber yeah Nicholson Chris Jones Omar Graham's back you kind of know what you got with Graham I mean that kid's been in college for six years it's it's time for him to I will say the wild card at linebacker is freshman Isaiah Williams coming off an ACL tear um you know before that ACL tear he was the top ranked linebacker in the country coming out of high school he's a kid that is you know if if Chris Jones is a little bit limited athletically this kid is the opposite it's got serious speed serious power it's just about getting him how much can he get acclimated and get his feet wet you know oh man well there you have it folks right we had to go our rod was here we got a uh shuttle we gotta get
Kicking Game And ACC Season Range
SPEAKER_00on out of here before we go we got an Australian kicker is about 30 right yeah man social media presence yeah was it Daniel Hughes so hopefully we won't have to worry about that Danny we got a a kicker an Irish guy who likes to fight so that's that's good hopefully that that can be a strength you know if you can kick the ball and get the points when you're close huge yeah I mean it's dude it you can go anywhere from three and nine to seven and five dude it wouldn't surprise me like it's it's the ACC well I mean I don't see us blowing many teams out so you're gonna need a kicker and you're gonna know how the best this team can do you're gonna have to win close games so this is that'll be a big position and we'll see what happens there. Well we went over the positions maybe next time we'll start to get into the schedule we'll look around college football who the who's expected to do what I know uh muschamps back in Texas yeah at the D coordinator you know they mean Texas if not now when honestly just just look at the teams that were in it at the end last year and they'll be the same ones in half million for quarterback.
SPEAKER_01Yeah they went and got him so we'll try to make sense of it all I mean that and they had spinning the most they had to buy him out so it's closer to 10 million spent overall it's ridiculous. Right well they're they're banking on it man this is this is nattier bust for them watch out for Notre Dame trying to go to the win the ACC maybe I mean it would have been better if they would have last year.
SPEAKER_00They gotta have a chip on their shoulder you gotta can't let any hiccups early in the season now they got they got two games on their schedule the rest of it is just straight up yeah straight up dog trash I know man goddamn month away we went through it tried to go around the ACC maybe look up and down the schedule go through some of the the opponents see what our chances are and we'll map out our wins and losses for you before the year gets started and we'll do that for the other teams too still got a soccer post world cup show to get to so a lot to go over we'll watch it we'll react to it and we'll talk to you next time right here on the North Florida Sports Network
