Portal Quarterbacks Change Everything
SPEAKER_03like the fact that they went back to the portal to get another quarterback. Well that's I mean that's just the way it is right look at look at every good team that's what they do look at Miami I mean look at Texas Tech I mean look at Notre Dame. I mean this is what you have to do you have to build your roster and then but you can't build your roster and then like just hand it over to some young kid that might not be ready or it it just won't ever so they're gonna you're gonna go out and pay that one position if and it could and it could be a transfer so it's just a it's just a different game. Right and the people that don't like that are probably need to I mean that's just well they're used they need to hope this resolution comes goes through Congress and there's some sort of No it's not going.
SPEAKER_05It's already dead yeah it's dead on arrival man yeah they're not passing shit it's not gonna you know well there's nothing there's people that are stuck in the way that they used to recruit quarterback at Florida State where a guy that they would pull out of high school would be counted on to develop and then be the future that's not what goes on anymore. No they sign a kid just saying hey we'll take a flyer on somebody and if they turn out good great if not we're probably just gonna go get a starter in the portal anyway.
SPEAKER_03Right because you have to pay yeah so so if you're gonna pay you're gonna want to pay someone at least who's proven right and and love it or hate it you need you're gonna go after guys with experience. So every year recruiting a kid out of high school doesn't even mean anything. No if you can't honestly you're probably he's gonna end up transferring and going somewhere else.
SPEAKER_05Yeah unless you can get a a blue chip kid a kid that you know is is considered an elite high school prospect you're gonna just see the same thing happen. Who's gonna start by year two Sperry Brock Glenn go down the list the kids they sign out of high school will be here a couple years never start and then end up transferring to finish their career.
SPEAKER_03That's just how that's how it is at everywhere. Week Zero Win And SMU Test
SPEAKER_03Mexico State going into the ACC opener on Labor Day. This is a huge game I got us winning New Mexico State too so we both have us at undefeated one and oh probably for the second time in a row hey man this is the second time in a row that we are one and oh this is the huge game and this is a conference game this is a a strong opponent in the conference a team that's predicted to be at the top of the conference yeah one one at the very top but towards the top one of the only teams that scares Miami one of the top quarterbacks in conference yeah we're gonna see what this defense has in store I feel good that it's the first kind of game here I mean if you look at in terms of just this game they're able to prepare Mike Norvell's had a good history on preparing for the first game now the seasons haven't gone well but look back to the LSU games I mean he's beat he beat Alabama you know uh these are big games in the beginning of the year I'm hoping that Florida State can bring an environment that can you know confuse that quarterback and hopefully get some turnovers and get a lead and you know play off that and I'm I'm thinking the Knolls upset the Mustangs here and I got them going two and oh Jimmy I do not yeah well you know I that's that's that's understandable I mean there's obviously you know the SMU isn't dismal they'll be under they're not like some wildly more talented but it will be like under three I'm sure yeah so I I think out of the the conference games this one is one they could win I mean it's winnable it's just it's the environment you still have that early season optimism.
SPEAKER_05Yeah and and SMU lost quite a bit I mean you know they lost some skill talent they still got the quarterback coming back Lashley's a pretty good coach.
SPEAKER_03This game when it is is why I'm picking FSU if this was probably later in the season I wouldn't you know Lashley with the guys they have after film's been laid on you know yeah I might not pick it but this is the kind of game I'm I'm hoping that they can come out and team should hopefully still be relatively healthy.
SPEAKER_05Lots going to depend on what what the offensive line looks like.
SPEAKER_03This is one of those games the fork in the road type of games of your season. Yeah I mean it you because it's in the conference now the Alabama that was just well you're talking I mean dude we've won three conference games in two years. Yeah so if you win this to start you're man you're you're really when a bowl game is the goal yeah you're looking really good there. So last time they won a conference over was 23 right but I you don't you know you don't want to get boat raced you want to see you want to see the defense play with some enthusiasm make some stops and you don't want to have them looking confused.
SPEAKER_05Right I hopefully you know if you're gonna get beat get beat I'm hoping the back end of that secondary is the strength so if SMU is going to do something they're gonna have to to run the football and and grind it.
SPEAKER_03That's what I that's what you got to you don't want to see any big plays. Make them have to earn it. Yeah so that you know again did it's a winnable game. On the offensive side of the ball you have one of the best receivers in the country establish him. Yep you got you got a running game that should hopefully give you something and then you have a threat out there that where they if they bring enough guys in the box boom it's not that hard just run it deep. If he has one on one I'm throwing to him every time it's a winnable game.

Right just you know be Jake Coker back there. Just just manage the shit. Alabama Reality Check Then Virginia
SPEAKER_05just put me on the loss because until I see it I'm not gonna I'm not gonna believe I got I gotta believe it to see it.
SPEAKER_03You're not putting you don't put it at toss up we don't have that no so we're one and one going into Alabama's two and oh going into Alabama I have us lose in that game it's on the road yeah I mean it's a road game it's you know um you know it's it's gonna be tough I mean you want to see it honestly what it you just don't get hurt don't don't do anything to get guys hurt because you I don't see this year as any kind of playoff any kind of chances I know that's hard you don't want to say that but I'm trying to go to a bowl game yeah I mean win the games that you have a chance to win and it doesn't seem like you have a chance to win this game this game doesn't mean if you win anything to either team it doesn't matter yeah it's more of like you don't want to lose if you're Alabama and even if you do it's not gonna it doesn't have to keep you out of the playoffs last year doesn't mean shit. Yeah um so I got two and one you got two and what do you got a loss here? Yeah it's a one and two playing Norvell's team central Arkansas right put them at two and two I got three and one and then we have another huge conference game at home so you got two of your biggest conference games of the year starting off the season at home. So you're gonna find out Taylor made to try to go two and oh and come if you can get these two and oh against Virginia is the next game against Virginia who's gonna be pretty good yeah I mean and the ACC coming off a solid year they they are and coming off a just a sting of a loss a loss that turned the whole season if you win that game you probably go to a bowl game but but I what I want to say about what I want to say about Virginia you're talking about Florida State's loss last season to Virginia yeah yeah and and Virginia's season last year are number one I don't think they're gonna have the same quarterback I think he's done um but you know they also really got helped out by being able to play NC State and have it not count as a conference game. Yeah so their appearance in the title game every you know all of that and I you they will be good they're still gonna be good but you got us winning I think I I think they'll win Epps trophy I think that's a game that they will win I think you got this is a personal game man you you're on that if you're any if you're rock if you're on that field if you're Deuce Robinson this is your game to step up in the locker room right and make sure we get I mean they had they had it last season you dropped and they just gave the game back well he had yeah he needs to come out and I would like to see a dominant win here. This is going to be I got us winning this game that's two and oh in the ACC four and one overall what do you got I got us winning that one all right I got us sitting at three and two three and two one in the ACC though that's that's still solid that's when it gets that's when it gets that's that's your you don't want to start less than that no three and two one and one in the ACC you have to get one of those games right you start off oh and two in the AC if you say SMU that's gonna put a lot of pressure on that Virginia game yeah yeah and vice versa you win SMU that's gonna hey what you can do if you're sitting at four and one and and the only loss is on the road in Tuscaloosa like that there's still gonna be God forbid there there's gonna there's gonna be some excitement well then you go on the road and you're going to Louisville and this is one of those tight this is one of those games kind of like the SMU game yeah it's on the it's it's on the road I got Florida State stubbing their toe here I you know losing their first conference game on the road to Louisville
Road Worries At Louisville And Miami
SPEAKER_03like I'm gonna have to see this guy like string together wins on the road before I'm gonna trust that he can do it. Because we haven't won on the road in the ACC since 23 since the pit game where I was at that was a long time ago. Yeah so I would really I really want to see a win here.
SPEAKER_05This is gonna be one of those Friday night games and you know Louisville's got arguably the best running back in conference coming back.
SPEAKER_03That's what I'm worried about. Florida State is weak yeah there you know Louisville's big up front Florida State isn't big home game against Virginia yeah and then you got to go on the road to Louisville and it's before the Miami game so I got us losing this that's gonna be two and one in the ACC four and two overall what about you I got I got us dropping it it'll three and three one and two in the ACC this is where I this is where the spiral starts for me. Well then yeah well because Miami's next in in Coral Gables uh the road teams have had a history of playing better you know except for that one game where Florida State got shlacked but they usually yeah um two years ago and in 24 I mean they hung in there they did the best they could you know they sacked Cam Ward what like five times which is a game they had no shot. Yeah it was never really close.
SPEAKER_05That's this kind of game I think it'll look the exact same as it did two years ago.
SPEAKER_03I think Florida State will come out fired up hopefully they make it competitive but Miami's just too good.
SPEAKER_05They got too many weapons they got too many guys all over the roster yeah it's in the trenches it's a mismatch right and they'll be able to wear Florida State down that's why you hopefully you can come out and get some big plays and get a lead and yeah I mean you know we watched what Jaden Ball from Florida did to Florida State last season. Yeah I see Mark Fletcher and their running backs doing the same thing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah they just you know that's why you're gonna have to need some sort of special teams or some sort of big play and try to get a lead and you because you if Miami gets ahead on you could it's over all right um I got us losing that game to Miami so you're two and two in the ACC you're four and three overall this is this is check yourself type.

Clemson Pressure And Coaching Stakes

SPEAKER_03Right this is this is job on the line because you're coming home Halloween against your rival Clemson. Yep and this is this isn't the dominant Clemson of all depending on what how the Miami game goes and how some of these games go like you said I don't I don't know if they even have the money to fire him. So if it goes like we said so far in the records are what they are they're not gonna fire him if he's one game under 500 or one game over 500.
SPEAKER_05No my my dream of him being fired before Clemson it like you're gonna need to get embarrassed. Right you're gonna you're probably gonna have to lose to one of those two all the all the games that are hard you just lose. Right.
SPEAKER_03And one of the ones that's not hard oh god yeah then you're fired yeah yeah that would but I I don't see that happening this is a game where you'll see if there's buy-in or not yeah this this is make a break like if if you come in and you you because this is Clemson they're probably gonna have the same type of season yeah I mean that they're not the dominant team that they were they they still got to have talent yeah who's gonna have the most buy in here um and I'm gonna go Halloween night I'm gonna take FSU here I think hopefully you know they're coming off two losses but two hard fought losses and they get home and get right against Clemson. But this is a tough stretch I got him winning this game that's five and three three and two in the ACC and if they do I mean if you're if you're right uh me loss yeah I don't trust I don't I don't trust the defense I don't trust Tony White I don't trust the D

SPEAKER_05This this to me is This is one of the games where This is the must must win for the team. Yeah, if you could lose this. Right. You're looking at maybe a four-win season if you're lucky, if you lose this game.
SPEAKER_03Well, uh, I got him winning this game. And six and three, four and two in the ACC. Bowl eligible. I got him, yeah. That'd be huge. I got them winning this season. November. November 7th. And then so that sets up another short week on the road. Mm-hmm. And that's the second time, you know, you come this time you're on the road in Boston College and you have flip it and go back to pit. Yeah, this is gonna be a tough one. And I don't have us winning this game. No. It took Jared Verse and Jordan Travis to go up there and win, and it wasn't easy. Last time in 23. No, it wasn't. Narduzie, they're not great, but they're tough.

Florida Rivalry And Final Records

I think Bo elgibiti could be on the line for both teams. Yeah, so this yeah, so this I I don't see it looking so seven and five, five and three in the ACC. All right, I'll take it. Yeah, I got it. SPEAKER_05Three and five in the ACC. Yeah, and I think that's it. I think that'll be what saves his job is that they won three ACC games. You know, as as many in this season as we have in the last two. So technically, you can sell progress.
SPEAKER_03But when reality is I'm being honestly, I I went through this probably a couple weeks ago, and I had it where you are. I had it five and seven, and I couldn't get out of it. So I I talked myself, and it was it's pretty much the SMU game and the Virginia game.

SPEAKER_03It starts off right there. If you lose those two games, give up. It's over. Yeah. If you lose, you gotta win. If you lose them both, it's it's done. Yeah, if you gotta win at least one of those.
SPEAKER_05Right. If you go on the road after losing to SMU, lose to Alabama.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, you got two ACC home games to start off the conference against two teams that you can win. You need to you need to step up and win. That's it. Yeah. And you need to win both, I think. But I I agree with you. I think if you want to go to a bowl game, you need to win both those games.
SPEAKER_05I I don't think that it it has any bearing on Mike Norvell's job, but I think in order to keep your team locked in for the entire season.
SPEAKER_03You want to go to a bowl game and have postseason at your and I and I really want that, man. I hate I hate not going to a bowl.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it'd be nice to win some games. So like you said, dude, he's he might as well win as many games as you can because he's not going anywhere.

SPEAKER_03But to their, I mean, I think the ACC's from top to bottom not nearly as bad as the reputation that they have. Like Pitt, Louisville, these games are not easy. No, they're not easy. But Miami shouldn't lose to any of those teams this year. They shouldn't have the stumble against what are they losing? Who did they lose? NC State? No, Louisville and SMU.
