During a Teenage Leadership Retreat in Buffalo, New York, my wife and I had the privilege of serving as Scholars in Residence. In one of my sessions, I explored the profound question of why G-d created us and how to uncover our individual life purpose. I shared that when we truly listen to our souls, we receive signs that reveal our unique gifts to the world. Many people experience a deep emotional reaction—what I call "the tingle"—when witnessing nature’s grandeur, like the Grand Canyon or Niagara Falls. Similarly, I feel that same tingle when teaching topics that ignite my passion, as if my soul is affirming, “This is what you were meant to do.”
The very next day, we visited Niagara Falls and took a ride on the Maid of the Mist. As the teenagers rushed to the top deck, eager to immerse themselves in the mist and power of the falls, my wife and I stepped aside for a moment of quiet. Then, suddenly, a thunderous chorus of voices rang out: “Rabbi Dave, we feel the tingle!” In that moment, I realized the depth of the lesson I had shared—the recognition of purpose can be a deeply felt experience. This realization led me to create a mini-series dedicated to helping others manage their time better while identifying their unique life mission.
Finding your purpose begins with discovering your "why." When a goal is so compelling that achieving it excites you beyond measure, you will push past obstacles to make it happen. Businesses call this a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal)—a vision so bold that it seems almost impossible at first, yet it inspires relentless effort. Whether in business or life, understanding why you strive is the first step. In this episode, I dive into what drives us to accomplish great things, and in the next episode, we will explore how to leverage your unique talents to fulfill your mission. Your purpose is waiting—will you listen to the tingle?
