Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, this is Culture Court, my name is CJ and here are the three sports stories you need to know today. First, in the NBA, in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Boston Celtics beat the Indiana Pacers to complete the sweep. Here's the crazy thing With six minutes left in the game, the Pacers had an 89% probability to win the game, but Jalen Brown, justin Tatum and Drew Holliday quickly closed that gap. Derek White hit the dagger to seal the deal. In the NBA Finals, the Celtics will play either the Dallas Mavericks or the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Mavericks can close out their own sweep tonight with a win at home. If the Mavs sweep the Wolves, this would be the first time ever that both of the NBA Conference Finals ended in a sweep. I think the Mavs are going to win tonight because Luka and Kyrie, kyrie and Luka they're just too good. If the Mavs do sweep. The part that sucks as a fan is that there's going to be an eight-day break between the end of the conference finals and the NBA finals. That, of course, kills the excitement and then, from a business standpoint, the NBA is going to lose out on advertising money for the additional games.
Speaker 1:Second, major League Baseball umpire Angel Hernandez is retiring. Fans and baseball players think Angel is one of the worst umpires in the entire sport. Last season he missed 161 calls in just 10 games. He's had numerous issues numerous issues this year, but one of his worst games was back in 2018. Angel was working a playoff game between the Yankees and the Red Sox. Three of his calls at first base were overturned, three of them. After the game, yankees pitcher CeCe Sabathia made clear that he was not a fan of Angel.
Speaker 2:I do need to say this, though I don't think Angel Hernandez should be umping playoff games. He's absolutely terrible. He's terrible behind the plate today. He's terrible at first base. It's amazing how he's getting a job to pitch and to play in these, to umpire in these playoff games.
Speaker 1:What did you say to him?
Speaker 2:This is a conversation for us, but he shouldn't be anywhere near a playoff game. Is that sentiment shared by many of your teammates? Everybody, I think? I think, if you go ask them on the other side too, cece was his strike zone tonight. It's always, it's always he's bad. I don't understand why he's doing these games.
Speaker 1:Angel says he's retiring to spend more time with his family, but sources say that Hernandez and Major League Baseball finally settled the racial discrimination lawsuit that he filed in 2017. Angel alleged that MLB refused to give him World Series assignments due to his race. He never considered that maybe he's just bad at his job. His lawsuit was dismissed in 2021 and he lost an appeal last year after MLB proved that there was essentially no difference in promotion rates between white and minority umpires. So good riddance, angel Hernandez.
Speaker 1:Third NFL kicker, brandon McManus and the Jacksonville Jaguars have been sued. Two women have accused McManus of sexually assaulting them during a charter flight to London last year. Mcmanus now plays for the Washington Commanders, but last year he was on the Jaguars and the Jaguars played a game in London. The women are seeking more than $1 million in damages and they have requested a jury trial. If this is true, obviously McManus will have to pay damages, but there are two things that are a little less obvious. One, the NFL might also hand down a separate punishment. Two, keep an eye on whether McManus gets charged for a crime. Crimes committed on planes usually get prosecuted in federal court, so McManus could be facing prison time.
