0:49
hosts Amy Wald and Kathy Maguire welcome
0:52
back everyone to the sustainable
0:54
Hospitality podcast we are excited today
0:57
to be live at the junto in Columbus Ohio
1:01
in brass eye which is their Rooftop Bar
1:05
um it's really changed the game for
1:08
Hospitality here in Columbus Ohio but
1:11
more importantly our guest of honor is
1:14
Kevin Cary hi Kevin how are you hello
1:17
I'm happy to be here good to see you
1:19
good to see you also we've got a lot of
1:21
exciting things to talk about with Kevin
1:24
um we are here for the Ohio Hospitality
1:25
show which is going to take place in a
1:27
couple of hours and Kevin you are the
1:30
acting president of of ahla right now
1:33
American Hotel and Lodging Association
1:35
how's that been going uh it's great uh
1:38
it's it's an honor and a privilege uh to
1:40
lead this organization which has such a
1:42
significant impact representing the
1:44
industry as a whole uh the diversity and
1:47
impact the hotel and lodging industry
1:49
has on the economy on local communities
1:52
and as a source of mobility and job
1:54
creation is is just such an economic
1:56
Powerhouse so having the opportunity to
1:58
engage with the industry the industry
2:00
leaders uh and help to advance its
2:02
interest uh is just an honor and and
2:05
something I enjoy doing every day and
2:06
have been working with this group for uh
2:09
next month will'll be seven years wow
2:12
but you had a breadth of experience
2:14
prior to that and I was curious you know
2:17
you were with American Express American
2:19
Express Global Travel how did that
2:22
really parlay into the work that you're
2:24
doing now Kevin um so at American
2:27
Express I had a a range of roles I
2:29
actually started as a summer intern um
2:31
while going to undergraduate uh at Penn
2:34
State which I can say here in Columbus
2:36
Ohio um but was able to advance uh
2:39
through the organization and a number of
2:40
roles in Communications and government
2:43
Affairs and then ultimately moving on
2:45
the commercial side of the business um
2:47
but the business uh at American Express
2:49
whether on the payments or on the Travel
2:51
side always had a deep connectivity to
2:53
the travel and tourism Industries and so
2:55
my interaction with the lodging industry
2:58
was as part of that that connection and
3:01
where the card members and spend so
3:03
supporting those relationships
3:05
understanding the the global impact of
3:06
travel and tourism um was always very
3:09
key to the company's positioning and in
3:11
a number of roles I worked representing
3:13
the company um with industry
3:15
associations um so through that um role
3:18
in representing the company was the
3:20
exposure I had to US Travel and the
3:23
National Restaurant Association and
3:25
ultimately to the American Hotel and
3:27
Lodging Association so it was a natural
3:29
kind of jump over the tracks if you will
3:32
but so you were on the supply side
3:34
essentially yeah that it's interesting
3:37
isn't it to look back on a career
3:39
journey and never really know you know
3:42
at the time but it all makes sense it
3:45
does uh the the the lodging industry uh
3:47
the diversity of it um Beyond just the
3:50
economic impact of my experience when at
3:52
American Express um was principally
3:55
through working with the large brand
3:57
companies coming into the industry and
3:59
working for ahla you get to see the full
4:01
scope of the industry uh the important
4:03
role that owners play third party
4:05
management company just the range of
4:07
vendors who Supply the industry um but
4:09
also um importantly given the property
4:12
we're at here in in Columbus the the
4:14
junto um independent hotels um also play
4:17
such a vital role in the industry so um
4:20
I I've certainly broadened and and
4:22
deepened my appreciation uh for the uh
4:25
the reach and impact that this industry
4:27
has over the last several years and you
4:29
mentioned a couple of things that I
4:30
think are really important you know that
4:32
family tree if you will of hospitality
4:34
is um a complex one it is and I think
4:38
it's so important for hotel
4:40
organizations hospitality and travel
4:42
organizations to seek out associations
4:45
like ahla to help them navigate um and
4:48
and you know really figure out where
4:51
everyone lies in that family tree
4:54
couldn't agree more the the the role we
4:56
play promoting the industry serving as a
4:58
convening entity for all segments uh in
5:01
working to broaden the understanding
5:04
across so many different stakeholder
5:05
groups of what the industry represents
5:07
but part of the reason we're here in
5:09
Columbus is to engage local employees um
5:13
GMS a vital role that GMS play in the
5:17
industry and local owners and other
5:19
leaders it's it's important that we
5:21
partner um with our colleagues at a
5:23
state state level the Ohio hotel and
5:25
Lodging Association plays a
5:27
fundamentally integral role here and
5:29
we're delighted to partner with them
5:31
locally but also on on issues at a
5:33
federal level as well and you mentioned
5:36
when you first came up here that you're
5:37
now going to start you know socializing
5:40
a little bit more of bringing in that
5:42
independent which is what the junto is
5:44
it is it is right and I think that's an
5:47
exciting phase of now where ahla will go
5:50
absolutely certainly from a personal
5:52
level uh that I've uh worked uh to
5:54
develop and and working closely with our
5:56
our membership team uh the independent
5:58
segment um is significant and and as you
6:01
think at a local level um independent
6:04
owners and GMS um are leaders in their
6:08
communities uh and they also invariably
6:11
as we find out when we engage them
6:13
they've got key relationships with local
6:15
elected officials uh so harnessing their
6:18
power um the the the impact they have on
6:21
communities through their operations the
6:23
guests they serve but also many of them
6:25
we find are involved in local
6:26
philanthropic efforts as well so that
6:29
independent segment uh is a Powerhouse
6:32
uh that we're um affirmatively trying to
6:34
engage more and you'll see more from us
6:36
uh so I was thrilled uh to find out that
6:39
our event here was going to be at a new
6:41
uh and beautiful independent property
6:44
yes I it's we could really dive deep
6:46
into this but we have a mission here but
6:49
I do want to mention that you know the
6:51
junto is doing all of those things that
6:53
you said they are really um infusing
6:56
this kind of left alone Community for a
7:00
long time giving it a lot of new life uh
7:04
creating Community spaces and they're
7:06
owned by a Powerhouse we all know
7:09
Rockbridge and make ready their operator
7:12
um so they're doing a lot of great
7:13
things for the Columbus Market so if you
7:15
haven't been to the junto and you're in
7:17
the area you have to come and check it
7:19
out I know I'm coming back and you're
7:21
lucky enough to stay here I haven't
7:23
stayed the night here so I'm sure that's
7:24
just as wonderful great great experience
7:27
well thanks for that intro and I hope
7:29
that that our audience um was able to
7:31
learn some more about you and the great
7:33
work that ahla is doing in conjunction
7:36
with the Ohio hotel and Lodging
7:38
Association
7:40
ohla but you know the reason we're here
7:42
today is because I really wanted to talk
7:44
to you about this groundbreaking new
7:46
partnership right that has happened
7:48
between
7:49
ahla excuse me and green key correct and
7:53
so um let's talk a little bit about
7:56
Green Key you know they are they they
7:58
started in 19 1994 did right by the
8:01
hotel association of Canada uh so I
8:04
think it's a natural fit right here in
8:06
North America and they were actually
8:08
created by Hotel owners correct correct
8:11
so these are not people that just know
8:13
sustainability they understand inner
8:16
workings and the struggles and the
8:18
barriers and the challenges of the hotel
8:20
industry as well talk to me about what
8:24
those those conversations were like
8:26
behind the scenes and and how that is
8:29
going going to help Propel um the
8:31
responsible stay initiative through h
8:34
ahla a lot a lot of acronyms there um so
8:37
the hotel association of Canada as you
8:39
said did start the the Green Key
8:41
initiative and we've had an ongoing
8:43
dialogue um with the hotel association
8:45
of Canada for many years um their
8:47
president and C CEO Susie grenell um is
8:51
outstanding is a terrific leader and
8:53
representative on behalf of the industry
8:55
um we partnered together just in
8:57
comparing notes on advocacy related
8:59
issues on membership issues on how we
9:02
engage the industry in our respective
9:04
areas um during the pandemic uh the uh
9:09
HC um took one of our saf stay
9:12
initiatives and leveraged it uh in
9:15
across Canada so there had been an
9:17
active building discussion um we
9:20
observed certainly the growth and the
9:22
momentum in the marketplace around
9:24
sustainability and third party
9:26
certifications um and the conversation
9:28
with Su and her team uh and her
9:31
leadership progressed and as we learned
9:33
more um about the program they had um
9:36
the fact that it is designed by hotels
9:39
for hotels um and the momentum around
9:42
this whole area of sustainability but
9:44
also um third party certifications um
9:47
the conversation led to is there an
9:49
opportunity here for us to co-manage and
9:52
co-own this business um but do it in a
9:56
way that that really not only drives
9:58
member value value uh but also helps to
10:01
advance uh this initiative around
10:03
sustainability and and third party
10:05
certifications and I think it's
10:07
important that you mentioned third party
10:08
certifications because although there's
10:10
momentum out there um there is a big
10:13
push from some of the OTAs online travel
10:16
a agencies Google to only promote a
10:20
hotel if you are verified by a third
10:23
party accreditor and so they are but you
10:26
know one of the things I love about
10:28
green key is that it's very accessible
10:31
corre um it's easy to implement and they
10:35
give you a road map to really deepen
10:37
your commitments if you can't do that in
10:39
the beginning they let you know how you
10:42
can do that moving forward I'm sure
10:44
that's one of the reasons why you found
10:46
that a good partnership it is uh again
10:50
that that principle of being designed by
10:52
hotels for hotelier um is fundamental to
10:56
to the value proposition in the offering
10:58
and and um many hotels are at various
11:01
stages in their Journey around
11:03
sustainability um and many have
11:06
initiatives that they've been
11:07
progressing over time um so while some
11:10
may be entering it from the first time
11:12
uh some may be far along in that Journey
11:15
but that road map as you said um and the
11:18
uh ability through the self assessment
11:20
and to receive that certification and to
11:22
continuously look to improve uh meeting
11:25
customer needs uh is is really something
11:27
we saw as great value relevance um and
11:31
creating a a very viable program uh for
11:33
individual hotels but the industry as a
11:35
whole and it's really exciting to me
11:39
that not only does it do all of those
11:41
other great things it also organizes
11:43
your efforts right uh and it also you
11:46
know really allows you to kind of have
11:48
that kickoff with your team allow them
11:50
to see the commitment you are making and
11:52
now that's that buy in that you want to
11:54
get from your employees and your
11:56
stakeholders and being able to tell that
11:58
story you know I think that the
12:00
misconception is out there that if
12:02
you're not doing um you know deep
12:04
sustainability work you can't acquire
12:07
this and that is not the case one of the
12:10
greatest things about green key is that
12:12
many people would be surprised to find
12:14
out they can receive a certification
12:16
correct right out of the gate and then
12:18
again receive that road map well you
12:20
touched on a couple things uh at an
12:23
employee level uh Associates um and and
12:27
colleagues are interested in
12:29
contributing towards the industry but
12:31
their property and their employer
12:33
efforts in this regard um we're having a
12:35
conversation um with the ohla today
12:38
around one of H's key initiatives called
12:40
forward advancing women in Hospitality
12:43
uh and there was a young woman on stage
12:45
uh who's a student at Ohio State who was
12:47
talking about her career interest and
12:48
sustainability was one of the drivers
12:51
that she mentioned uh about the
12:52
attractiveness of entering the industry
12:54
so it's not only relevant with today's
12:57
employees and Associate base but also
12:59
the future Workforce coming into coming
13:02
into the industry so you see it at so
13:04
many different levels it it's relevant
13:06
to employees um it's about capturing
13:09
business uh where you see that uh from
13:12
Leisure Travelers who are increasingly
13:14
looking more frequently for sustainable
13:16
practices from properties they select uh
13:19
business Travelers and corporations are
13:21
building these requirements into their
13:23
rfps um that they have with large hotels
13:26
and chains and the other category of
13:28
group meeting planners as well um this
13:31
is an important decision criteria not
13:33
only are they looking at sustainable
13:35
practices but also looking to see if
13:37
that's confirmed through a third party
13:38
certification as well that validation is
13:41
important gosh that's interesting that
13:43
you say that because we talk a lot about
13:45
right capturing that traveler that upand
13:48
cominging traveler especially that are
13:49
looking for those aligned values with
13:51
somewhere they stay but it's also that
13:54
upand cominging employee absolutely
13:57
Absolut man then the section between
14:00
also women you know I forget the
14:02
statistic but it's like women women tend
14:05
to care a little bit more about these
14:07
initiatives sometimes as well so really
14:10
bringing home kind of that win-win win a
14:13
younger generation women and
14:15
sustainability um could be a powerful
14:17
tool to have for a hotel all those
14:20
things really answer the question of
14:21
what's the business case for this right
14:24
uh and so it it's not only a dimension
14:26
of how you position yourself as an
14:28
employer
14:29
uh to to retain and develop your
14:31
existing Workforce but attract the
14:33
future Workforce but ultimately this is
14:35
a this is a business decision that that
14:38
properties and Brands uh are making
14:41
properties again whether they are
14:42
branded or independent see this as
14:45
fundamental to their ability to serve uh
14:48
and meet their customer requirements so
14:51
there's a business case and a rationale
14:53
here in addition to it being a social
14:56
good and advancing something we all care
14:58
about in terms of the climate uh in our
15:01
world and thanks for bringing up the
15:03
business case because it's not just
15:05
these other levers it's also literal
15:08
bottom line business cases when you
15:11
think about a Sustainable Building or a
15:13
green building that operates on average
15:15
20% better you know just someone who is
15:20
looking at that p&l is is going to make
15:23
these moves right but there's so many
15:25
pressures uh today on the bottom line uh
15:29
often times um in this environment
15:31
there's been a lot of recognition around
15:33
how average daily rates have grown up um
15:37
but um the bottom line is being
15:39
pressured um we still need workers in
15:41
the in the industry um costs for
15:44
Commodities uh paying uh our employees
15:47
uh has gone up which is terrific um but
15:50
also insurance cost in other areas so
15:53
this is uh the profitability um
15:55
pressures that the industry faces are
15:57
significant um but this is a way to to
16:00
ensure that you're capturing that
16:01
business um and whether it's a Leisure
16:03
traveler or a business traveler or a
16:05
group traveler that they're making an
16:07
affirmative decision that this is a
16:08
property that they're going to to uh to
16:11
to frequent and and honestly the proof
16:13
is out there I mean when we look at
16:14
emerging Brands like one hotels six
16:17
senses in soneva who aren't emerging but
16:19
they're entering the US market Regent is
16:22
on its way back those are higher end but
16:25
Best Western aore IHG um High and
16:29
Crescent even you know management
16:32
companies and independent Hotel
16:34
companies are even looking at this like
16:38
this is time it's time now that we take
16:40
take a hold of our assets well You'
16:42
mentioned uh a number of uh existing uh
16:46
Hotel Brands uh and management companies
16:48
who are already participating in the
16:49
Green Key business um just in the week
16:53
in one day since we made that
16:55
announcement since we we entered and
16:57
officially became a joint business in in
17:00
North America in the US and Canada we've
17:02
had numerous outreaches from other
17:04
brands other management companies um who
17:07
uh have had some level of discussion or
17:09
others who are noticing it for the first
17:11
time so the momentum again around the
17:13
existing customer base that green key
17:15
brought into this collaboration but uh
17:18
the elevation of awareness and interest
17:20
uh our teams are already engaging with a
17:23
number uh who um we expect will join the
17:26
program um and become a part of the
17:28
Green Key global program very soon
17:30
that's great to hear but you know what
17:32
Kevin I we say all of these things out
17:35
there right these these great things
17:37
about the sustainability movement and
17:39
and taking on the Green Key initiative
17:42
but the fact of the matter is daily
17:45
operations still have barriers they
17:47
still have struggles they're still
17:49
trying to figure out how to juggle it
17:50
all um you know from High interest rates
17:55
to you know capturing that employee
17:59
um and and many other uh you know
18:01
Financial barriers what advice would you
18:05
give someone how do you you juggle all
18:07
those things and still make time for
18:10
something that should be a priority yeah
18:12
yeah it's a great question and and and
18:14
really um I I mentioned at the outset
18:17
that our involvement in in green key is
18:20
given our role as a as a member-based
18:22
organization um some of the largest uh
18:25
and we're fortunate to have some of the
18:26
largest global brands in the world world
18:29
who are very active in ahla but we also
18:31
have small Independents um bed and
18:33
breakfast Mom and Pops um who don't have
18:35
the resources of some of the global
18:37
Brands um and who can work with us uh uh
18:41
I I I probably didn't address your your
18:43
question earlier on about how does this
18:45
fit with responsible stay um which was
18:47
our our overarching commitment to
18:49
sustainability that we launched uh in
18:52
2022 um which brings together a number
18:55
of Industry efforts programs best
18:57
practices and access through resources
18:59
and solutions for for all segments of
19:01
the industry so wherever you are from a
19:04
a size of operator uh to stage of
19:08
sustainability awareness or
19:10
implementation um our responsible stay
19:12
initiative and certainly green key is a
19:14
component of that um are tools and
19:16
solutions uh that we're eager to make
19:18
available and serve as a a clearing
19:20
house and and an entity uh from a member
19:23
value proposition standpoint that we can
19:24
bring to the industry yes so I think you
19:27
bring up a good point remember how many
19:30
good free resources there are out there
19:34
to you for you to get on board and I
19:36
think that's why it's important anytime
19:38
you're taking on a new initiative
19:39
regardless of what it is there has to be
19:42
someone in charge of it inside of the
19:45
hotel and then they are going to be the
19:46
one to lead that and do and make those
19:49
Communications to the rest of the team
19:51
well we're trying to make it easy uh one
19:53
of the things that that that our team um
19:56
does effectively uh in my judgment um is
20:00
serve as an efficient uh provider to the
20:02
industry so whether it's our responsible
20:05
stay website and access uh to that
20:08
information we've got a very active
20:10
sustainability committee that brings
20:12
together industry leaders across all
20:14
segments to focus on these issues and
20:16
then certainly now adding Green Key
20:19
Global to that overall package of of
20:22
services and information and access to
20:25
cost-saving measures um is really uh
20:28
something something we we want to make
20:29
it easy because we know uh uh operators
20:32
um their time is precious they've got so
20:34
many different demands uh from guest and
20:37
and Associate demands on them uh giving
20:40
them an easy way to access this
20:42
information is is something we uh try to
20:44
keep very much top of mind yes so you
20:48
know looking ahead emerging Trends gosh
20:52
I just feel like the the industry is
20:54
like just ready to burst right with with
20:57
all kinds of things not just sustainab
20:58
that's where I keep my head but
21:00
Innovation and new BRS and Independence
21:04
where do you see you know the future of
21:07
travel heading and whether that's
21:09
Innovation sustainability right right
21:11
boy there's so much uh there um
21:14
personally uh U experiences I believe
21:17
are are at the the Forefront um you can
21:20
you can want to travel uh to a community
21:22
like Columbus if you're here on business
21:24
if you're here to attend a football game
21:26
a lot of great golf courses around here
21:27
as well um so how you look at the
21:30
experience and whether um you're here
21:33
and you or you're staying in a property
21:34
that your corporation mandates uh or
21:36
you're looking for a unique new property
21:39
like the junto here uh those experiences
21:42
um are essential and I think that is
21:44
what you see um providers whether you're
21:47
a brand or an independent owner trying
21:49
to cater and identify those those
21:51
emerging customer needs uh certainly
21:53
within that uh the technology experience
21:55
how customers engage uh make payments uh
21:59
on property um get offers on a
22:02
pre-arrival or or or post arrival basis
22:06
um is really uh areas that that I think
22:08
you'll see more uh from the industry
22:10
trying to harness establishing those
22:13
experiences serving the the customer
22:15
life cycle uh whether you're here for
22:17
leisure or business purposes but but
22:19
also the experience on property and and
22:22
Technology being such a a key driver of
22:24
that your Tech stack exactly gosh when I
22:28
think about that that's you know that's
22:30
a whole another animal you know right
22:33
they they really do have their hands
22:35
full so I can see how it becomes some
22:38
sustainability sometimes becomes
22:39
something that you're just like I'll get
22:41
to it I'll get to it but stay
22:42
sustainability is is is linked uh to
22:46
technology um uh as you look at uh cost
22:49
savings opportunities whether that's the
22:51
operations or where technology from a
22:54
sustainability standpoint falls in the
22:56
customer experience there there's no
22:58
device or separation there
23:00
sustainability is linked very
23:01
inextricably with technology decision
23:04
and future investment great point you
23:07
are absolutely right so for the sake of
23:10
time we know you have a busy day one
23:12
last question talking about Hospitality
23:15
workers and maybe there's some
23:16
Hospitality workers out there that are
23:18
already really passionate about
23:19
sustainability but I really believe that
23:21
you also start to see those those
23:24
workers start to elevate too whenever
23:26
they align with something they feel very
23:29
passionate about as you start to
23:31
formulate your strategy but you know
23:34
what advice would you give them on how
23:36
can they contribute or maybe how can
23:37
they start to influence their hotel and
23:41
to start engaging in some of these
23:42
practices well I'd be remiss if I didn't
23:45
uh put in a plug for ohla and ahla uh
23:48
getting engaged uh with your industry
23:50
Association we talked about how I did
23:52
that in my career before coming to HLA
23:55
uh it's an opportunity for you to
23:58
network uh to connect with your industry
24:00
peers across segments of the industry
24:03
and get access uh to resources and tools
24:05
that you can leverage not only from a
24:07
professional development standpoint
24:09
individually but also on an
24:10
organizational level so that engagement
24:13
uh I think whether it's looking at it
24:15
through your own career Journey uh or
24:17
ways that you can enhance value for your
24:19
your employer or your property is
24:21
certainly a great starting point that's
24:22
great advice and I you know I partnered
24:25
with ohla and I was blown away at really
24:30
all the different resources that are
24:32
available it's from a professional and a
24:36
personal standpoint I just think there's
24:38
so much to gain from from aligning
24:40
yourself with one of those well Kevin
24:43

24:45
