00:40 Disclaimer Attempt/Lauren Arrives via PORTAL
Dave: This is Dr. Dave McCarty. Empowered Sleep Apnea is an educational podcast…which is a bit different from a medical advice show.
Clinical decision-making in Sleep Medicine can be…complex! Even EMPOWERED PATIENTS need a partner and…hold on…wait a minute!
Forgive me, listeners, the entire Empowered Sleep Apnea knowledge bunker is awash in color…and there appears to be a doorway opening that I’ve never seen before. Let me go and see if I can open it up…
Wait…what?? Listeners, I can’t believe my big brown eyes! Standing here before me, in the Empowered Sleep Apnea knowledge bunker is Airway Health Solutions founder, Airway-Palooza mastermind, and fellow PULMONAUT Lauren Gueits!
Lauren! How did you get here?
Lauren: I signed up for the portal! Took two seconds!
Dave: The portal?! Sheesh! Ellen must have installed that when I was away in Reno. So cool! Well, I was just about to start a show, maybe you can help me?
Lauren: Sure! What’s it about?
Dave: “Empowered Sleep Apnea” is an educational podcast where we learn about Sleep Apnea through the power of stories…
Lauren: (Interrupts, laughing) NO silly, I know what your PODCAST is about, what’s this EPISODE about?
Dave: Oh, yeah, see…right! Well, this episode is a little challenging!
Lauren: How so?
Dave: Well, you know how I’m interested in the—I’ll call it: the ANTHROPOLOGY of idea change? You know? How is it that scientific paradigms can shift? What happens, on an individual basis, that allows a new idea to take root?
Lauren: It has something to do with being ready. Being receptive.
Dave: YES!
Lauren: There’s a moment that happens just one step beyond fearfulness, where we admit to ourselves that we don’t know …that we are receptive to something new…
Dave: Yes! It’s the moment of revelation when you realize that there is a lot going on, outside our own little silo! When dealing with the enormous LEVIATHAN commonly known as Sleep Apnea, I’m talking about the moment in the journey when one realizes that it’s just too big.
You know? Too complex.
Lauren: I’ve been thinking about the same issue! Sleep Apnea is simply too enormous of a problem for one person, inhabiting one silo of thought, to sort out.
At some point, one recognizes just how much there is that we don’t know yet. This is the territory of complexity.
Dave: Yeah, complexity! A complex navigational space begs us to engage. To probe. To explore.
Lauren: To LISTEN!
Dave: Yes!
You know, at some point, the admission feels like relief. It’s the admission that, underneath it all, all the bluster and jingoism, we all really do have a lot to learn, you know? This idea has got me thinking about…you know…everything…
Lauren: I know! And you say everything, right? With our current political climate of drastic contrast, you have to wonder about the magnitude of extremes. How is it that half the population is “right” and the other half “wrong.” The divisiveness kinda reminds me of the current climate in the orthodontic and Sleep Apnea worlds.
Could it be that perhaps what we don’t know is the culprit…
…That ignorance isn’t bliss?
Dave: YEAH! Complexity can be SCARY! As a result, we dig in our heels into dogma and habit and turn a blind eye to new ideas and developments. The question is: how comfortable is it, living with blinders on?
Lauren: What I know is THIS: friction requires growth, and all growth results from expansion--which means that we have to be receptive to ideas that aren’t our own if we are going to grow. Perhaps the first step is in reconciling that we know that we don’t know everything….
Dave: Yes!
If we accept that collaboration is key, then listening is paramount to change!
Well, how do you want to tell this story?
Lauren: Well, in my best life, I live in a musical, as do you!
Dave: The musical alternate-universe solution, eh? I like it! Do you think the portal can take us there?
Lauren: I bet it can!
Dave: Well, all right! Very well then, listeners! I will find the big red button to push, and then I hope you will enjoy this very special POP SONG episode of Empowered Sleep Apnea: THE PODCAST…follow us as we step into a little ditty Lauren and I co-created that we’re calling: …AND YOU KNOW…
It’s a fun little earworm about that nagging voice we had in our heads…you know…that voice reminding us to pop our heads out of our silos…because…well…you know…
As always, listen to the end to access the treats at the bottom of the crackerjack box…we’ve got a CARTOON and a DAD JOKE waiting for you there!
Now, Lauren, let’s you and me step into the portal here, and…see if we can find our way to the musical alternate universe…
Now where’s my big red button? Ah here we are!
Hope you enjoy it…here we go!
Lauren: Let’s go!

Empowered Sleep Apnea: THE PODCAST is a production of Empowered Sleep Apnea, LLC. Today’s show was written and performed by me, David E McCarty MD, FAASM and Lauren Gueits, RDH.
The cartoon for today’s program was found curiously tucked inside a tumbleweed, blowing across the San Bernardino Freeway at exactly 12 o’clock midnight, on David Bowie’s birthday!
It’s an image that ended up in our Beautiful Blue Book--Empowered Sleep Apnea: A Handbook for Patients and the People Who Care About Them, a little picture called The New Patient…in it, we see our pal Claudio…as he is asked to try to tell his story…
…to share his complexity.
You can see from the look on his face…it would help to have a little structure here…something to help him discover what he does not yet know that he DOES NOT YET KNOW…
I want to thank my PULMONAUT musical sister, the magnificent Lauren Gueits for lending her voice and her talents to today’s episode.
To learn more about Lauren and what she does when she is not being awesome on this program, check out the show notes, or go to www.AirwayHealthSolutions.com.
I also want to thank YOU, listeners, for helping the Empowered Sleep Apnea project grow! The language of the project continues to inspire and enlighten. I’m delighted to report that the Five Finger Approach, along with some of the cartoons from this project—including the Circadian Rhythmo-Wheel! --will be featured in two different textbooks offered by the iconic textbook publisher Springer, which means there’s another avenue for EMPOWERMENT to occur, on a world-wide scale.
If you want more details on the project, use your INTERWEBS to go to our website at www.EmpoweredSleepApnea.com , click on the tab that says WHO, and you can find my most recent CV, which I’m doing the best I can to keep up to date.
Dr. Ellen Stothard will be back next time, when we encounter our next STORY FROM THE FIELD…until then, I’m back on board the Beautiful Blue Balloon and I’m…casting off…I’ll catch you next time, Life Fans!
Stay tuned next…for your Sleep Medicine Dad Joke.
