SPEAKER_01Welcome back to 10 to win the podcast, the podcast focusing on how to create a winning mindset in 10 minutes. This is part three of our Creating a Brand series. If you are just tuning in for the first time, this is the interview portion. And today we have a very special guest. Jason, why don't you tell the listeners who is joining us today?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, buddy. Today our guest is Brian Scott, or otherwise known as B. Scott. Brian was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio. He graduated from Meadowdale High School and began attending the International College of Broadcasting. In addition to that, he also began attending Sinclair Community College, where he graduated from Fire and EMS schools and has been a career firefighter for the Miami Valley Fire District for over 22 years. Brian owns and operates his own business called Brian Scott Innovative, which oversees his DJ business, photography business, and woodworking business. He's a published model for companies such as Hampton Fitness, Wear Proper, Lion Apparel, LED by Iron, and Job Alliance. He's also a published photographer, a CPR and first aid instructor as well. He's currently married to his beautiful wife of 16 years and has three beautiful daughters as well. Brian, that's quite the resume, man. And honestly, perfect for this episode of how to create a brand for yourself. But before we dive into that, man, how are you, my friend?

SPEAKER_02Doing well, doing well. Been looking forward to this one. Super excited to have you on the podcast. I follow you on social media. You're constantly posting and promoting your brands, which I thought was just amazing for you to have on here. So thanks again for coming on here, man.
SPEAKER_03Hey man, you're welcome. Thanks for having me, buddy.
SPEAKER_02Of course. So listen, this week we have dove deeply into creating a brand for yourself. That's what we've titled this thing. And we feel as though someone who's on a winning mindset path at some point, Brian, needs to be able to market themselves and create a brand around what they do best. Why do you believe creating a brand for you or your company is so important?
SPEAKER_03Well, people need to see you. You know, in the beginning, I wasn't posting anything or I wasn't very active of letting people know what I have to offer. And then I, you know, I hooked up with some people that had their brand and they were winning with it. And so I started just promoting myself, taking pictures of myself and my gear, or taking pictures of myself when I'm doing um DJing weddings or anything I do. I make sure I take pictures and I post it. I'm not the type that I never like really advertised like on Google or anything like that. Everything I've done is pretty much word of mouth. And it's you have to put yourself out there to to let people know where you who you are, even if it's uncomfortable.
SPEAKER_02No, that's a good point. And I think that in itself is people's biggest fear, right? Because they don't know what people are going to say about them. They don't know how people are going to judge them. Maybe people don't have the self-confidence that you have had. And let me ask you this real quick before we get to anything else. Did you always have self-confidence, or was that something that you developed over a course of time in order to allow you to feel better about yourself when you're promoting you or your brand?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, listen, I was I really had to learn self-confidence. You know, um, like I said, we went I went to broadcasting college, as you mentioned, and um I was a DJ. I've been a DJ for 35 years now, going on 36. And when I would DJ, I would not, I would my worst fear was talking in front of people, but I had to overcome that fear, in which now I am very comfortable talking in front of everybody. I teach classes of CPR like 35 to you know, 35 people, up to 35 people sometimes. And right, yeah, it's an uncomfortable position to be in, you know. But I was not always like that. I had to learn how to do it. Um, and broadcasting college helped me because I had to do a lot of public speaking, you know, speech classes and you know, things like that. It's helped me tremendously with what I've done and you know what I continue to do.
SPEAKER_01That's great. Always working on it, right? Yeah, yeah, always. So, Brian, let me ask you this. So, you and Jason and I were all entrepreneurs, and Jason and I have been talking this week about what brand or branding stands for, especially in terms of like a business. And what I tell uh so I teach entrepreneurship courses to college students, and I tell these college students when you're an entrepreneur, your reputation is your brand, at least in the beginning, right? Because you're coming up with a new thing, or or maybe you know, it's not like you invented DJing or photography, but all people know about your DJ or photography or woodworking business is is you, at least at first. I mean, where what do you think about that? Where does reputation fall in line with like creating a brand for you or for anyone that's gonna start a company?
SPEAKER_03Reputation is everything uh when it comes to creating a brand. For myself, I always tell people this like people will remember you how you treat them. Kindness goes a long way. Jason can attest to this. I've I'm I'm a kind guy and I overly kind sometimes. And I believe that has helped me so you know, so much with my reputation because you know, I I go when I go out and meet people, you know, at networking events, you know, I shake the hand and have strike up a conversation with them and really get to know that person. And then I tell them about my business or my businesses that I have, and um, and they always remember me, you know. I wouldn't even have to pass a business card. It's it's one of these things like, hey, take down my number, you know, things like that. Like I'm Brian, you know, Brian Scott, this is what I do. Um, just being nice to people and and then carrying out being nice when I arrive to whatever event that I'm doing for them, you know. Um, one thing I like to tell the people is that if you're gonna do something, you better be that same person throughout the event or throughout that process because people will remember you. And if you're not, they won't call you back. I got a lot of repeat customers, you know. I got sure I've I've DJed weddings and I've ended up DJing the wedding for a brother, then a the sister, then the dad might get married to somebody else. Then I end up doing a fan reunion from that same family. Then it it it's I got stacks and layers and layers of repeat customers just because that simple thing, kindness, kindness goes a long way.
SPEAKER_01Well, I think it's really interesting. Like you what you just described is like it you can't fake it, right? I mean, you might be able to get away with that like once, right? But but like you said, like then the brother hires you, and then the sister hires you, and then the best friend hires you, and and then it's like if you weren't really that way, like you would they would find you, figure you out quickly, right? And so, like to me, I think that's really important when we talk about branding or building a brand, is that it it has to be authentic to you, and that doesn't mean, right, like not for all the listeners, they can't just go out and be the nicest person around, like you have done for yourself, and that works for you because authentically you are a very nice guy, but they have to be authentic to the thing that is their thing. I mean, that's their brand, whatever that brand is, that's their thing, right? So absolutely.
SPEAKER_02Brian, let's take it a step further here because we're talking about reputation. You go out and you do the DJing and you do the photography, and then the next day you're at the firehouse, and everyone sees that you have these multiple gigs going on. You can't be mediocre in one, leave that, and then expect to have you know hundreds of customers in the other because you're gonna step your game up, right? Like reputation is a day-to-day thing, it's not a pick and choose thing, it's not an hour-to-hour thing. And so you have to be a great fireman. When you leave that, everyone there knows you're a great fireman. Hey, guess what? He's so good at this. I bet he's a pretty awesome freaking DJ. I think I'm gonna hire him for this too, right? And then same for the photography. So I think reputation is is of course what you said and being nice and being authentic to Kevin's point, but I think it's also something that you have to display every single day of your life because it doesn't really matter what you're doing, people are always gonna look back and be like, Well, last week that guy was a dud. Why would I want to hire him for this now? You know? So it's good stuff, man. Really is so so. Let me ask you this, man. What do you feel are the most important things you can do to create a brand for yourself or for your company? I mean, have there been things that have been successes for you, things that have been failures for you? Elaborate.
SPEAKER_03You know, um, I will tell you, pretty much everything I've done is I started out failing, you know, but it was something I'm I'm I was passionate about, you know, with DJing, you know, with the whole thing I explained earlier. Like I was terrified to talk on the microphone. I come from when I first started DJing, I was DJing in my mother's, I had a walk-in closet that I set my DJ equipment in, and I would DJ and play music. I got really good at DJing, right? Yeah, but when it came talk time to talk on the mic, I was a failure. I was stuttering, messing people's names up. I mean, it was it was a disaster, you know. But uh it's one of those things I just had to keep at it, you know, and and I was passionate about because I wanted to be a DJ, you know, and then firefighting. That's another thing, you know. I wanted to be a firefighter, I had to be passionate about that. I had to put myself out there, I had to be the best I can be. Nobody starts out the best fireman, right? I'm not saying that I am, sure, right? So, you know, you got to keep working at it, keep working at it. Um, you know, with my photography, man. I I I look back at some of the pictures that I took when I first started, and I look at them now like, oh my god, did I have a you know a Fisher Price camera? You know, what the what was I thinking about? It's just like, you know, once you here's the thing once you create something and you create a brand, you can't just stop there. You got to keep learning. I mean, uh, Jason, you know, with the with firefighting, you can't just stop learning. You learn every day. Of course, right? You have to learn every day. Um I with me, photography, I'm I'm watching YouTube videos constantly, like, how can I improve this? Well, how is this person doing this? How are they how are they setting it lighting up? You know, things like that. But man, you gotta fail to succeed. That's that's that's the big thing. You really have to fail to succeed.
SPEAKER_02And the only way you can do that is to put yourself out there. Yeah, right. You gotta put yourself out there. Yeah, yeah, 100%.
SPEAKER_01And keep working at it, right? Keep identify what it is that you need to be better at and then work on that thing specifically, right? Like you you were good at some of the aspects of the job and and some you needed to work on. It's it's important, right? We talked about that stuff with Ted Karash Jr. where he was like, make sure that you're getting better at the things that you you need to get better at, right? And so like I think that's really good too. Let's let me change lanes on you for a second, Brian. So on Wednesday, we were talking about content production, and we talked about why videos are are really important in today's kind of digital marketing strategy. Um, for someone who's just getting started with a business or you've just even trying to create a brand for themselves. Uh, you know, I mentioned before I've got a bunch of college students, and they they may not be trying to start a business, but they are trying to get a job. And so they're going out on their social media and they're using things like LinkedIn for someone who's just trying to start this brand or start this start a business, what kind of content should they be trying to produce? How often should they be producing it? What you know, what should they be putting out there and and how much?
SPEAKER_03Well, one thing I would tell them if they if they are going to be serious about doing some type of you know, creating some type of brand, they have to be all in. You can't half-ass this. You gotta be you gotta be all in these days. And you know, as far as how often the frequency of producing content, every moment that you can, like seriously, get yourself, you know, a second cell phone, get yourself a camera, a nice uh mirrorless camera or whatever type of camera to capture content that's away from your phone. So you don't have to be a connector to your phone. Um, but it has to be you have to be all in with myself. I can be all in more than I am now, way more than I am now. But I have a lot of stokes and you know, I've got a lot of fires going on. I got a lot of things. Um, but you have to like that you have to really, I can't say this enough, you really have to be all in and believe in your product, and you got to be showcasing it all the time, like constantly. I would say every day. I mean, you know, one of those things like just put up a you know a blank screen, not a blank screen, but uh, you know, some type of super over a picture, you know, saying, hey, this is what I do or whatnot. And and it's as simple as that, you know, Instagram stories or the uh Insta Instagram reels and stuff like that. Because those things get noticed, especially if you put it with some nice uh some type of popular music, you know, some branding music, or what do you what do you call it, the um the music that everybody uses that when you scroll in through your reels and it pops up, and like, oh, let me let me check on who else used this music or who else used this sound. Yeah, and it will pop up. Like, I'm still I have I I did a video a couple of weeks ago um of my DJ equipment, and it had like the movie from um uh what was the movie, Bella Hill's cop, when he was in the furniture store with the uh with the one guy, and was like, How much did this cost? He was like a hundred, you know, a hundred thousand dollars. He's like, get out of here. I used that, and I am still getting like like 10, 12, you know, likes from that a day. I mean, it's crazy. I mean, nice something simple like that. And if I had put myself out there and put like, you know, this is how you get in touch with me, um, I DJed, blah, blah, blah, then that would have been like that's free advertising. It's basically free advertising. You know what I'm saying? It's free. I mean, I am blown away. Had this social media platform been around when I first started, bro, it would have been amazing.
SPEAKER_02Well, you're obviously doing well now, you know. So, I mean, you probably didn't need it, but obviously it would have been nice to have back when you started this. But you bring up a good point, man, because I had heard this one time, which from a from a YouTube creator, and his advice was don't worry really about the content, just keep uploading. Like every day, upload something. And eventually all of that collectively will go farther for you than just one well-thought out piece of content a week. And I find myself struggling with this as well, right? You know, you how you said you could be better with the content. I mean, I see you put out stuff all the time, and you could still be better. And I think a lot of us are like, oh man, I'm gonna put out this, I'm gonna do a really well thought out Facebook post right now, and that's surely gonna get me some business. And it's like I put it out, I get 50 likes. I'm waiting and waiting and waiting for my phone to ring, and it's like nothing, nothing, nothing. Right. And I was like, what the hell am I thinking? Nobody's gonna take, you know, take me up on this. I gotta be doing this stuff every day. No wonder companies hire social media folks to do this all day, every day, right? To promote their stuff. It's that important. 100%.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's a full-time job.
SPEAKER_03It is, it really, it really is, man. I mean, I am like the head of the social media uh for my uh fire department. Um, I got a one of my battalion chiefs is over, you know, over me. He's he's the final say of what we post and everything like that. I got like um what was it, 10 people now that work that help me do post and everything, but it is still a full-time job for me. Like it's still a lot of work.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you guys are posting all the time, you're doing a great job with it.
SPEAKER_03I'm putting I'm putting stuff together, you know, daily with for, you know, we're doing our employees employee spotlight. I've been taking pictures of every every employee, and I've been uh putting a little you know spotlight, you know, saying how many years they've been in the fire service and all this. And that's you have to think about some things, you know. You contact them, then you got to get more information from them, and then you got to do the you know, the super over the black screen and everything, and it's it is really a full-time job, man.
SPEAKER_02It there's no doubt. And and once again, I think it really just goes back to probably planning and scheduling things out. I mean, Kevin and I have hit this a number of times, and yet I look at myself and I still struggle with this. I know that I need to do more than what I'm doing. And you know, you mentioned having a million fires going right now in your life, all the businesses that you're doing, and we're no different, but in reality, it's just an excuse. We we just we just gotta get better, we gotta get scheduled out, yeah, we got to plan better um to do this because repetition is the key here and getting yourself out there. Listen, we've talked about social media in depth and at length here, and we know that it is it is free advertising potentially, it works if you can continue to do it. But if someone hasn't been on social media very much, or they I mean there's literally people out there, Brian, that still do not want to have a Facebook account and things like that, right? So for those listeners who are trying to create a brand, someone who's trying to create a company, is there anything else that you recommend that they do in order to try and promote themselves if they don't have access or they don't want to deal with social media?
SPEAKER_03I mean, you know, that goes to what type of business they have. Um in the beginning, as far as me pushing myself as a DJ, I used to have business cards back in the day. You know, I will go and pass them out at different like schools. I used to DJ at a lot of uh Dayton Public Schools for like school dances and stuff like that. I would go to every school and like, hey, my name is Brian Scott, I'm a DJ. Here's my card, give me a call. You know, you got to do some footwork because it's it's it's a lot harder not being on social media and trying to promote yourself. It is a lot harder. Um, another thing is you know, meetups. So they have meetups everywhere, social events, uh, networking events, things like that, to get yourself out there and start talking to people. And here's the thing when I tell you for my DJing, I've really never advertised outside of you know having passing out business cards. Word of mouth, man. Word of mouth. You know, even if it's a family member telling a family friend or another fan, a friend of theirs and blah, blah, blah, hey, my cousin DJs. Oh, really? Is he good? Yes, he's good. You know, make sure you're good, right? And that's how it goes. Word of mouth is is the one of the best things, it's the oldest form of social media, right? Yeah, word of mouth. You good?
SPEAKER_02But that goes back to your reputation, right? That goes back to the reputation that we talked about 100%. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_01And and your reputation is your brand, right? When you when you ask, when you ask Aunt Sally to recommend you to her friend, she's gonna look at you and she's gonna say, Oh, sure, yeah, I'd love to do that for sure. And then she's gonna turn around, and either one of two things is gonna happen. She's either gonna do it because she believes in you, or she's not gonna do it because in her head, even though she looked you in the face and said, Yeah, sure, I'll do that for you. In her head, she was like, Yeah, right. Like, you're just gonna screw that up, like you screw everything up because you're right, you're lazy or you're whatever, right? Because that's your brand, and that's why it comes back to that that reputation and that brand. I mean, that's what it's all about, right?
SPEAKER_03That's what it's all about, man. That's what it's all about.
SPEAKER_01So, Brian, the goal. Oh, no, go ahead.
SPEAKER_03Uh, I was just gonna, you know, just say your reputation is everything and put yourself out there, don't be afraid.
SPEAKER_01So, Brian, what I was gonna say is the goal of the podcast is to get people on this winning mindset path. And something that Jason and I have talked a lot about is building more relationships and and building those, those furthering those relationships. And so I was glad to hear you say, you know, word of mouth is is the oldest form of social media. When when we're trying to create a brand for ourselves, uh, can you give us some advice on why it's so important to build these relationships with other people and and what they can do ultimately do for you?
SPEAKER_03That goes back into you know word of mouth. But um for instance, this is one thing that's really uh this is very new into me right now. Um, it just happened last week. Um, I sold a guy a camera on um on marketplace, met up with him, cool guy. We used to say in camera system. We started talking, networking together. Um he sold some equipment for me because he had that's what he does for you know for a living for the most part is selling buy and sell cameras and everything. Um, it turned out to be this guy. I got contacted by Walmart to do um do uh uh portrait pictures for Walmart employees. He didn't want to do them. He was like, Hey man, are you interested in doing these photos? I'm like, for Walmart? Yeah, he's like, Yeah, yeah. He said, I could send you the information to you and tell them that you're a good photographer. No, not he's I send your work, I trust you. I was like, uh yeah. Oh yeah, are you kidding me? Walmart, man? Come on, yeah. So, you know, that friendship right there, building that relationship. That that's the thing. Building that relationship right there, that takes me that much further.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's a great story, man.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, just like my wife works for Wendy's, right? And my wife knows I've been DJing, I've met my wife DJing, right? So she knows my my work, my product when I DJ. I've DJed part uh wedding receptions for her uh co-workers. I've done their fresh games events at the Wendy's headquarters here in Columbus. I mean, man, things like that. And from that, I've DJed wedding receptions from that. I mean, it's just it's just like uh it just trickles down. I mean, I like to say I'm lucky, I fall in the right places, you know, sometimes, but man, I I gotta you know I have to really say it's my reputation, you know, me being that person, showing up on time, um, being courteous, you know, helping out. If somebody, like if I'm at an event and um I'm breaking down, I'm done breaking down, and somebody's cleaning up, I'll go help them clean up. You know what I'm saying? I've been there longer than everybody else, but I will stay and help a person clean up. That right there would make a person think, like, man, that that guy was really cool, you know. Yeah, I'm gonna go tell, you know, next time somebody's like, hey, I'm getting married, or hey, I got this party, or I need this event DJ, or I need photos for this, this, this, this, and that. Well, oh, Brian Scott, you know, he's a good guy, you know, blah, blah, blah. Get him to do it. And I can send them, they're like, Yeah, show them my work. It's as simple as that. I don't have I'm out of it. Boom. They call me, there it is, you know, meet with them, and that's how it is, man.
SPEAKER_02But but I feel like Brian, let you know, you've been a DJ for over 30 years now. You take yourself back at the beginning of stages, and you mentioned this already. You weren't great at talking to people then, right? But that's something you've developed over the course of a matter of decades. You've gotten really good at it. It's allowed you to build relationships, be nice, talk to people, and all of a sudden, boom, you know, your brand is exploding, your business is exploding just because you worked at something that you weren't great at at the beginning, and now all the hard work's paid off. So, congratulations to yourself, man.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's I mean, it's continually playing off, dude. I mean, seriously, like like even when I'm teaching CPR, um, I'm pretty much everything I do, I'm pretty passionate about it, right? Um, even when I teach CPR, I I might teach at a new company and it'd be my first time teaching there. And that company will request me. They will wait until I'm available, until next time they need their training, they request me. And there's a lot of lot of companies that do that. Just because one thing, I bring the realness to CPR. You know, I'm not one of the CPR instructors that sit in front of a computer, um, play the video certified. Oh, I got a certification now, and never put my hand on a body, you know what I'm saying? Never put my hand to CPR manually or on a patient for real. You know, that's the way I bring it, you know, and I I tell stories, you know, and people remember that and they they they love it. They really love it. I mean, I'll read some of my my evaluations from these classes, man, and it's like, well, I guess I am a good CPR instructor, you know. You know, it's it makes me feel good, man.
SPEAKER_02You know, of course, man. But the but that's all the hard work that you've put into it, right? To get to this point.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, yeah. I mean, you know, again, you gotta put yourself out there. You you can't be shy. You you gotta go for it, man. You gotta be gun-ho. I'm serious. Like, I this day and age, if you sit down and let things and say, I'm gonna do something tomorrow, or I'm gonna put myself out there tomorrow, and then it's gonna be the next day, and like, oh, say the same thing, and it's gonna build up, build up, and you're not gonna do it. Well, somebody else is gonna do it, right? 100%, man.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely, absolutely somebody else is gonna do it.
SPEAKER_03And then you're gonna be sitting there watching somebody else do it, like, when I had that idea, I should have done it. Nah, you should do it now. That's what you're couldn't agree more.
SPEAKER_02Couldn't agree more. Well, that is pretty awesome advice. Do you have anything else? Any other advice before we close this out, Brian, for our listeners on how to create a brand, how to market themselves better, anything at all before we close this out?
SPEAKER_03I I think we hit a lot of things, and I just can't, you know, say it enough. It's like put yourself out there, even if it's uncomfortable, um, it will pay off in the long run. Simple things, simple posts that you might have to, you know, you start dwelling on, like, man, should I put this out? Ah, what a bit, what you know, like you said, Jason, like, well, what are people gonna think about this? Forget what they're gonna think about it. You're putting it out, and then you're consistently putting things out. People are gonna be like, okay, I I like this, I'm gonna give this brand a try. I mean, that's it's as simple as that. I mean, I I happen to think that it's easy, you know. I have to think that it's easy. And and like I said, I'm as busy as I wanna be. You know, I'm as busy as I want to be. I'm not the type to post every single day because I'm crazy busy, you know, but I know if that day comes that I I need that the social media platform or any type of platform to you know boost my business. I know exactly what I have to do. Consistent, be consistent, and believe in myself every single day.
SPEAKER_02It's good stuff, man.
SPEAKER_03Really is.
