On our final episode before we take a break for the rest of summer, we invited Stephen Brown back onto the podcast to cap off Season 2! Stephen was our very first guest and it's fitting to have him back on to finish out what has been a great topic to end Season 2.

When we began looking back at our own journey and how far the podcast has come, we wanted to finish this season out with someone who started the journey with us. Stephen gives us his insight on why it's important to take in the present and why even in our darkest days, the journey still taught us something and put us in the position we are today.

Stephen gives great examples of his own life on how his journey has mattered so much and without that journey he would not have excelled the way he has in business and in his personal life. Please tune in and listen to Stephen wrap up Season 2 on why the journey matters!

Thanks and enjoy!

SPEAKER_04

Welcome back to 10 to Win the Podcast, the podcast focusing on how to create a winning mindset in 10 minutes. Today is our last episode that we will record before we take a break. As we've mentioned throughout this week, we are blessed to have been able to record a hundred episodes now, and this past eight months have been amazing, filled with laughter, education, motivation, and inspiration. We've had some amazing guests since the beginning of this journey, and why not end season two with the person we started this journey with? Kevin, I'm excited to once again have a guest on who laid the groundwork for this journey and why it's mattered so much. Kevin, who's here again with us today, man?

SPEAKER_01

Jason, today, Stephen Brown is back. He was the very first guest that we hosted when we talked about attitude. Uh so he was on episode three. So check that episode out. And he's back. He's the first double guest, Steven Brown. Yeah, that's right. Welcome back, Stephen. Steven's uh he's a local businessman, he's a former president of the Rotary Club. Steven is well known within the community and comes, you know, like I said, he comes back for a second go-round with us. So if you're a first-time listener, um go back and and give the the episode on attitude, episode number three. Uh, listen to Steven's thoughts on attitude. Um and he's back here to conclude our second season, and we're gonna be talking about Steven's insight on our topic all week, which is the journey matters. Before we get into that, Steven, welcome back. How are you, buddy?

SPEAKER_03

Good, good. Glad to be back, guys. Appreciate the invite.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, man, glad to have you back. Uh had a lot of good comments about that first uh interview, man. So we're excited to have this one again with you.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, absolutely.

SPEAKER_01

So, Steven, we were ending this season and we're gonna take a break for the summer. Um, you know, Jason and I are both busy and we're just trying to enjoy the rest of the summer before it fades away. And, you know, we were really talking about how awesome this this whole podcast journey has been, and that kind of brought into focus the the topic, the journey matters. And so uh relishing on on the present because once it's over, you you can't get it back. And so many of us are are focused on the future and how we can get better, and why, while that's definitely important, we can't forget that you know all the things we encounter along the way, which is our journey, um, really matter. So, what does it mean to you? This the statement journey matters.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, absolutely. Um, you know, I have to say, uh, from where you guys started and and where you're at now, uh, you can definitely see the journey. You guys have done a great job come a long way. So I love this topic, especially for you guys. When you get big and popular and you're in Hollywood doing these podcasts, I would love for you to put out the uh the first episode of this one uh without the edits. Um, but yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Um good, man.

SPEAKER_03

Um yeah, obviously the journey, you know, journey matters whether it's personal through business, but uh it's hard luck coming from a single guy who's not married, probably the only unmarried guy on this podcast. Um, well, here for sure. But um yeah, I mean it's hard not to correlate it with the relationships. So can you imagine a wedding? You know, the biggest celebration of your life. Um, you're there, you're you're talking about all of the situations you've been through, you're thinking all the memories you spent together. Some of it's good, some of it's bad. Um, but at the end of the day, yes, the end result, the marriage is a celebration. Um, but none of that stuff would mean anything without the journey that took you know took you there. So um that's kind of the best way I can think of it is in my head, um, but more on a personal level. That's a great analogy, really.

SPEAKER_01

It is, you know, you're right. Like the journey of falling in love and and all the things that come with that, all the feelings, uh, bring you to the the culmination of let's let's spend the rest of our life together. And you know, yes, the goal is to be married forever, but it's really about the the steps that you take along the way, right? That's great.

SPEAKER_03

If you guys aren't watching this video, uh Kevin's crying right now. So yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I'm coming up on anniversary number 15, boys. So that's good, man. Very important, and uh, you're right, you know.

SPEAKER_04

All right. Well, let me ask you this, Steven. So so so many of us set out for specific goals in our lives, and whether we want to have a family or get a promotion or make a certain amount of money, you know, during our journey to achieve these things, you encounter hardships, obstacles pop up, the road becomes rough. If you eventually get to your goals, how does that statement the journey matters fit in with this, especially when we're faced with adversity along the way? The road's never smooth, man. There's always going to be obstacles. And we get frustrated and we find that adversity, but but why does journey matter, you know, relate to that adversity and those obstacles?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, uh, great question. Honestly, you don't even um you don't get to that point that journey matters uh in the specific situation you're in until you're there. Um, you know, all that heartache and uh pain and you know, the back and forth, uh, when you're in the middle of it, you're feeling it, it's tough. But then when you finally get to where you were going, you're like, wow, you know what? I really appreciated, you know, all the hardship that I had to go through. And it makes it more worthy. Um, you know, I think about, you know, I went to a Catholic school, I grew up around a bunch of kids who were parents, bought, you know, their cars and everything for them, which, you know, it's great. Um, my parents made us work for everything. Um, and you know, at that time I certainly did not appreciate that. Um, probably had the junkiest car in the lot. But as I got older, I started really appreciating, okay, you know, I that that journey was tough for me to be around that. Um, but I appreciate it a lot more now, and I understand what my parents did by making us work for everything uh that we owned.

SPEAKER_01

So, Steven, you know, Jason and I and you have have all been friends for a really long time. And you know, we thought it would be really cool to invite you back on to bring like full circle the first, you know, the first guest to the most recent guest before we go on a a bit of a sabbatical. But uh, this also, you know, this topic relates to you. You know, we invited you to come on the very first week because we were talking about attitude, and Jason and I just every time we're around you, and we stated this um on episode three, you just always have the best attitude, and you you're just you're all smiles and you're ready for whatever is coming next, and you know, I think that just says a lot about who you are. But one of the things with Journey Matters that I that I was really excited to talk to you about is you know, you seem to be enjoying everything around you at all times because you have a really good attitude. How do we balance you know the things that we know we have to do, the necessary items that need to get done, versus being the way that you are, where you you seemingly are enjoying every minute of every day, you know, every time I'm around you. Um is it enjoy everything and worry about the other stuff never? Or you know, what's the balance?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, uh, I mean it's it's a tough balance for sure. Um, I mean, I gotta give my parents uh a big blessing. Uh for you know, I have amazing, loving parents, and and I think a lot of that uh just carries out, you know, without me even trying, as my dad's calling me right now. Um so you know, that's definitely a blessing, but uh also a lot of the hardships that I went through my life, I kind of made my life harder on myself with all the trouble I got into, um, which kind of goes back to the uh appreciate the journey. Um, you know, my proudest moment is being uh honestly being a Rotary president for Beaver Creek. Um, you know, I kind of went as, you know, an I don't want to say an outlaw, but just you know, a troubled child in trouble with the law over 18 and just really put barriers in in front of me and knew I had to work harder. So I was motivated to work harder because I had to. You know, I was not only challenging people who had a college degree, um, but and and you know, I didn't, but I'm also you know challenging with with having a uh a criminal record. Um so huge barriers. I had the motivation, but at the end of the day, to see the end goal, I had to have the determination to actually succeed at what I wanted to succeed. It wasn't easy, but again, the journey matters. Um, you know, I was able to work extra hard, go the extra mile, um, and not only show people that, okay, this is who I am, you know, my past isn't uh uh necessarily show or reflect who I am today. Um, but you know, um just working harder and finally getting to that goal of getting people to know me and um just being successful in business, you know, having good work decades. So um yeah, I mean it was a challenge, but uh probably the proudest thing I've done for myself as far as uh jumping barriers.

SPEAKER_04

That's good, man. I mean, Kevin and I had a a former WNBA head coach, two-time NBA, WNBA champion for two WNBA teams, and he referenced a book when we were recording with him, and it was called The Obstacle is the way. And in that book, and I've begun reading that book, and I think it's very fascinating, is that when we're faced with obstacles, we have a couple of choices. Number one, we can get frustrated and we can stop, we can turn around, or we can look at that obstacle as an opportunity. You mentioned some of the hardships that you've had in your life and some of the obstacles that you've had in your life, maybe this chub of childhood, or you know, not being as privileged, you know, when you were a student as some of the other kids around you. And although in those moments, it's hard for us to look at why the journey matters and why in those frustrations they shouldn't be, right? We should look at those as opportunities. And do you think that when this is all said and done and we look back at the journey matters, that we should be better at trying to make something an opportunity and not a frustration while we're going through it rather than looking back at it five years later, or one year later, or ten years later? Does that make sense?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. And honestly, I think this correlates to probably all of the podcasts that you've had is um kind of the same rhythm at the end of it. Your mind's a very powerful tool. Um, you can utilize it to overcome things, um, you know, almost impossible things, um, or you can let your mind take over and and kind of put more roadblocks in front of you that um you're preventing yourself to get where you want to go. Um and honestly, again, it's those challenges that um really test you. Uh and then when you overcome those challenges, you know, that that's a sense of pride to yourself, like, okay, I didn't think I was gonna be able to do that. And then when you do that, I mean you should be getting better and better at it. Uh, you know, you're counting yourself out, and then when you finally succeed that, that should be fueling you more like, okay, you know what? I, you know, I I was doubting myself, but this whole time I had the ability to do it. Um, so yeah, absolutely. And every chat with every challenge, you know, is an opportunity to just be a better, you know, better you. Um, and I think every day, just in every asset of her life, if if we can do that and have that mindset, we'll be better each and every day. And I mean, I think that's the goal for should be the goal for everyone.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, there really has kind of been our motto on this podcast, which is you know, how to create a winning mindset. And and so many of us are presented obstacles of which we could fail at any given time. We could stop, we could, we could turn around. But what we're trying to establish here is that those obstacles can be opportunities. And that's really what I think this is a this is a great uh topic to conclude season two with with The Journey Matters, because in those moments we all become so frustrated on why things are occurring. But if we just put our frustration aside and said, Okay, how can I look at this differently? Yes, I'm a little bit pissed off about what's going on right now, but how can I turn this around to make it an advantage for me? Or how can I learn from this? Or how can I make this an opportunity? That's really what the essence is of this podcast and what's so cool about wrapping season two up with you, Steven. So Kevin, what else you got, man?

SPEAKER_01

I think I got nothing. Steven, you got anything else you want to add about why the journey matters? Last bit of advice for the listeners.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, like I said, uh, you know, obviously it's definitely a mindset and it's easier, easier said than done. But um, you know, this might be a little bit different because a lot of this mindset's really challenging yourself, and that's where where it's really um really challenging and really matters. But um another thing that I learned is it's definitely surround yourself around people, like-minded, successful people. If that's you know, if that's the type of person you want to be, that's who you need to surround yourself with. I mean, I hated when my parents used to say, oh, you are who you hang out with. And uh, you know, I love his friends, had great memories with them, but uh, you know, I absolutely I 100% believe in that. And uh, you know, that's why I love you guys. And we've got along well. And our our group of friends, you know, they're they're they're all successful people coming from different backgrounds, and um, you know, surround yourself around the people that uh you want to be. Um and and and hopefully those people are better than you, uh, because then you're in the best situation to uh better yourself.

SPEAKER_04

That's a great point. Yep.

SPEAKER_01

I love it, buddy. That is a I couldn't have said it better myself, and that's a perfect place to wrap up part three. Why the journey matters. Thank you very much, Steven, for coming on the show again and giving us your insight on why the journey matters as we wrap up season two. There couldn't have been a better topic to discuss than this.
