that"},{"startTime":102.39,"endTime":106.47,"body":"we've defined for our system,"},{"startTime":106.47,"endTime":109.53,"body":"but on another level, there's"},{"startTime":106.47,"endTime":109.53,"body":"so much friction in it."},{"startTime":109.53,"endTime":112.92,"body":"And, you know, what we"},{"startTime":109.53,"endTime":112.92,"body":"mean when we say pathways"},{"startTime":112.92,"endTime":115.89,"body":"is kind of redesigning the system"},{"startTime":115.89,"endTime":118.38,"body":"in a more learner-centered way"},{"startTime":118.38,"endTime":120.48,"body":"to take their perspective into account."},{"startTime":120.48,"endTime":122.64,"body":"So, if you're in a kind of supply all my education."},{"startTime":140.16,"endTime":143.94,"body":"And it's just kind of an artifice"},{"startTime":140.16,"endTime":143.94,"body":"to say K-12 is one that?"},{"startTime":146.91,"endTime":149.25,"body":"That's kind of a historical artifact."},{"startTime":149.25,"endTime":154.25,"body":"The way people experience"},{"startTime":149.25,"endTime":154.25,"body":"education is as a pathway I think."},{"startTime":154.41,"endTime":155.37,"body":"It's as a journey."},{"startTime":155.37,"endTime":160.37,"body":"And I think we, as designers"},{"startTime":155.37,"endTime":160.37,"body":"of learning experiences,"},{"startTime":160.59,"endTime":162.51,"body":"would do well to take that perspective"},{"startTime":162.51,"endTime":163.773,"body":"more fully into as an institution"},{"startTime":243.21,"endTime":245.22,"body":"that was dedicated to educating"},{"startTime":245.22,"endTime":248.61,"body":"the sons and daughters of California."},{"startTime":248.61,"endTime":250.17,"body":"Part of what makes this place distinctive"},{"startTime":250.17,"endTime":252.51,"body":"is that it was co-ed at the beginning."},{"startTime":252.51,"endTime":254.52,"body":"We had free tuition at"},{"startTime":252.51,"endTime":254.52,"body":"the beginning of Stanford."},{"startTime":254.52,"endTime":256.53,"body":"For the first few decades"},{"startTime":254.52,"endTime":256.53,"body":"as an institution,"},{"startTime":256.53,"endTime":257.88,"body":"it was free tuition."},{"startTime":257.88,"endTime":259.8,"body":"And the founding grant of the university"},{"startTime":259.8,"endTime":263.01,"body":"that was put in place"},{"startTime":259.8,"endTime":263.01,"body":"when we were established"},{"startTime":263.01,"endTime":266.31,"body":"says that we have to take"},{"startTime":263.01,"endTime":266.31,"body":"into account the public good"},{"startTime":266.31,"endTime":267.78,"body":"and that we should be dedicated"},{"startTime":267.78,"endTime":269.94,"body":"not just to the interest"},{"startTime":267.78,"endTime":269.94,"body":"of our own community,"},{"startTime":269.94,"endTime":271.59,"body":"to our own students and faculty,"},{"startTime":271.59,"endTime":273.72,"body":"but to the broader public as well."},{"startTime":273.72,"endTime":275.82,"body":"I think that's a very powerful idea."},{"startTime":275.82,"endTime":279.81,"body":"Not every institution has"},{"startTime":275.82,"endTime":279.81,"body":"that history, but we do."},{"startTime":279.81,"endTime":282.54,"body":"And I think, you know,"},{"startTime":279.81,"endTime":282.54,"body":"as we look to the future,"},{"startTime":282.54,"endTime":284.85,"body":"it's valuable to draw on the past."},{"startTime":284.85,"endTime":285.96,"body":"And so it's important"},{"startTime":285.96,"endTime":289.17,"body":"to understand institutional"},{"startTime":285.96,"endTime":289.17,"body":"DNA and the roots"},{"startTime":289.17,"endTime":294.17,"body":"as we try to design frameworks"},{"startTime":310.29,"endTime":312.99,"body":"for thinking about"},{"startTime":310.29,"endTime":312.99,"body":"innovation that is rooted,"},{"startTime":312.99,"endTime":316.32,"body":"that does not feel that it's implanted,"},{"startTime":316.32,"endTime":318.66,"body":"that does not feel like"},{"startTime":316.32,"endTime":318.66,"body":"it's being imposed."},{"startTime":318.66,"endTime":320.79,"body":"So, yeah, that's kind of"},{"startTime":318.66,"endTime":320.79,"body":"the Stanford perspective."},{"startTime":320.79,"endTime":323.61,"body":"The broader higher education"},{"startTime":320.79,"endTime":323.61,"body":"perspective, I would say,"},{"startTime":323.61,"endTime":325.32,"body":"is that our sector,"},{"startTime":325.32,"endTime":326.85,"body":"whether you're in a private university"},{"startTime":326.85,"endTime":327.9,"body":"or a public university,"},{"startTime":327.9,"endTime":330.126,"body":"is subsidized by the public,"},{"startTime":330.126,"endTime":334.11,"body":"you know, and if you are"},{"startTime":330.126,"endTime":334.11,"body":"at a private institution,"},{"startTime":334.11,"endTime":335.64,"body":"you're not paying taxes,"},{"startTime":335.64,"endTime":338.67,"body":"you know, much of the funding"},{"startTime":335.64,"endTime":338.67,"body":"comes from federal agencies,"},{"startTime":338.67,"endTime":340.23,"body":"everybody chips in for that."},{"startTime":340.23,"endTime":342.93,"body":"Every taxpayer in our"},{"startTime":340.23,"endTime":342.93,"body":"country chips in for that."},{"startTime":342.93,"endTime":344.55,"body":"And I think it's not enough to say"},{"startTime":344.55,"endTime":347.13,"body":"that we contribute to the"},{"startTime":344.55,"endTime":347.13,"body":"commons, to the public good,"},{"startTime":347.13,"endTime":348.39,"body":"through the research enterprise."},{"startTime":348.39,"endTime":349.29,"body":"That's fine."},{"startTime":349.29,"endTime":352.65,"body":"That's kind of a common answer to that."},{"startTime":352.65,"endTime":353.7,"body":"It's absolutely true."},{"startTime":353.7,"endTime":356.01,"body":"I think that's necessary,"},{"startTime":353.7,"endTime":356.01,"body":"but not sufficient."},{"startTime":356.01,"endTime":358.47,"body":"And I think on the educational"},{"startTime":356.01,"endTime":358.47,"body":"side of what we do,"},{"startTime":358.47,"endTime":362.16,"body":"we also have an obligation"},{"startTime":358.47,"endTime":362.16,"body":"to contribute to the public."},{"startTime":362.16,"endTime":365.493,"body":"And the selectivity of institutions,"},{"startTime":366.51,"endTime":367.74,"body":"we're not designed for that."},{"startTime":367.74,"endTime":369.48,"body":"Nobody really wanted that."},{"startTime":369.48,"endTime":372.48,"body":"And I think we need to"},{"startTime":369.48,"endTime":372.48,"body":"find ways to redesign"},{"startTime":372.48,"endTime":375.42,"body":"and to circumvent some of the bottlenecks"},{"startTime":375.42,"endTime":378.54,"body":"that we've imposed in"},{"startTime":375.42,"endTime":378.54,"body":"the admissions process"},{"startTime":378.54,"endTime":381.033,"body":"to provide more educational public goods."},{"startTime":382.2,"endTime":383.85,"body":"- I really love this conversation"},{"startTime":383.85,"endTime":386.94,"body":"because too often we talk"},{"startTime":383.85,"endTime":386.94,"body":"about public versus private,"},{"startTime":386.94,"endTime":389.64,"body":"and there is this sense that sometimes,"},{"startTime":389.64,"endTime":390.93,"body":"this matter around elitism"},{"startTime":390.93,"endTime":393.24,"body":"and not focusing on the common good."},{"startTime":393.24,"endTime":395.1,"body":"So, I appreciate your focus"},{"startTime":395.1,"endTime":397.05,"body":"and feedback specific to Stanford,"},{"startTime":397.05,"endTime":399.48,"body":"but then talking about"},{"startTime":397.05,"endTime":399.48,"body":"the ecosystem as a whole,"},{"startTime":399.48,"endTime":402.36,"body":"that we all collectively"},{"startTime":399.48,"endTime":402.36,"body":"have this responsibility."},{"startTime":402.36,"endTime":407.1,"body":"And hearing about Stanford's"},{"startTime":402.36,"endTime":407.1,"body":"DNA around educational access,"},{"startTime":407.1,"endTime":411.03,"body":"I really was reminded of the co-ed piece."},{"startTime":411.03,"endTime":414.45,"body":"I just hadn't remembered that"},{"startTime":411.03,"endTime":414.45,"body":"piece of this conversation."},{"startTime":414.45,"endTime":416.91,"body":"And so as we think about the concessions"},{"startTime":416.91,"endTime":418.56,"body":"that Stanford made in its history,"},{"startTime":418.56,"endTime":419.58,"body":"I think one of the things"},{"startTime":419.58,"endTime":421.83,"body":"that I remember from the conversations"},{"startTime":421.83,"endTime":424.17,"body":"in looking at some of the historical data"},{"startTime":424.17,"endTime":427.62,"body":"is Jane Stanford's solution"},{"startTime":424.17,"endTime":427.62,"body":"was to allow learners"},{"startTime":427.62,"endTime":428.453,"body":"to take classes"},{"startTime":428.453,"endTime":430.23,"body":"without even becoming Stanford students."},{"startTime":430.23,"endTime":432.0,"body":"- Exactly."},{"startTime":430.23,"endTime":432.0,"body":"- And so, you know,"},{"startTime":432.0,"endTime":433.53,"body":"that was one way the institution"},{"startTime":433.53,"endTime":435.09,"body":"could maintain its admission standards"},{"startTime":435.09,"endTime":436.475,"body":"and support the mission."},{"startTime":436.475,"endTime":437.31,"body":"- Exactly."},{"startTime":436.475,"endTime":437.31,"body":"- And so I guess"},{"startTime":437.31,"endTime":439.35,"body":"I wanna talk to you more a little about,"},{"startTime":439.35,"endTime":441.69,"body":"more about online"},{"startTime":441.69,"endTime":443.85,"body":"and, given your experiences,"},{"startTime":443.85,"endTime":446.22,"body":"how do you see this modality helping"},{"startTime":446.22,"endTime":448.68,"body":"to support these various college pathways"},{"startTime":448.68,"endTime":450.21,"body":"that you've talked about?"},{"startTime":450.21,"endTime":454.17,"body":"- So, when I started"},{"startTime":450.21,"endTime":454.17,"body":"here in the fall of 2021,"},{"startTime":454.17,"endTime":457.65,"body":"I launched a new team called"},{"startTime":454.17,"endTime":457.65,"body":"Stanford Digital Education."},{"startTime":457.65,"endTime":461.13,"body":"And we are in the central administration"},{"startTime":461.13,"endTime":463.08,"body":"reporting to the provost,"},{"startTime":463.08,"endTime":466.5,"body":"and we do mission-driven"},{"startTime":463.08,"endTime":466.5,"body":"digital learning at Stanford."},{"startTime":466.5,"endTime":468.6,"body":"And so we are the central office"},{"startTime":468.6,"endTime":471.27,"body":"that coordinates the"},{"startTime":468.6,"endTime":471.27,"body":"efforts across the schools,"},{"startTime":471.27,"endTime":474.69,"body":"but we have a mandate to rethink the goal"},{"startTime":474.69,"endTime":478.47,"body":"and to position learning opportunities"},{"startTime":478.47,"endTime":481.02,"body":"for those who've been"},{"startTime":478.47,"endTime":481.02,"body":"historically underserved"},{"startTime":481.02,"endTime":482.523,"body":"by higher education."},{"startTime":483.36,"endTime":485.28,"body":"And the way we've thought about that"},{"startTime":485.28,"endTime":487.35,"body":"is to build this program that's focused"},{"startTime":487.35,"endTime":489.27,"body":"on low-income high schools"},{"startTime":487.35,"endTime":489.27,"body":"across the country."},{"startTime":489.27,"endTime":490.98,"body":"We use this criterion of Title 1."},{"startTime":490.98,"endTime":493.47,"body":"It's sort of a federal criterion"},{"startTime":493.47,"endTime":496.71,"body":"that defines a free and"},{"startTime":493.47,"endTime":496.71,"body":"reduced lunch percentage"},{"startTime":496.71,"endTime":500.1,"body":"of 40% or more."},{"startTime":500.1,"endTime":503.88,"body":"And we built a model that actually taps in"},{"startTime":503.88,"endTime":507.06,"body":"to that provisional student"},{"startTime":503.88,"endTime":507.06,"body":"category that you described"},{"startTime":507.06,"endTime":509.85,"body":"and reimagines it as an opportunity"},{"startTime":509.85,"endTime":512.91,"body":"for non-admitted students"},{"startTime":512.91,"endTime":515.01,"body":"to take courses from Stanford for credit"},{"startTime":515.01,"endTime":516.54,"body":"through a hybrid
