The Broken Pack: Stories of Sibling Loss
A Sister, a Nephew, and the Grief That Had to Wait
Apr 03, 2024 Episode 32
Dr. Angela Dean / Heather Mercer

In this episode of The Broken Pack: Stories of Sibling Loss, Dr. Dean talks with surviving sibling, Heather Mercer. Heather is Melissa's big sister. Melissa was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age eight, a walking miracle her whole life, who became a nurse, a single mother of two, and a drummer in high school. On September 25, 2021, eight weeks after moving into Heather's home for the independence she had been waiting for, Melissa died at 36 from postpartum heart complications, leaving behind a ten-year-old and a newborn still in the NICU.

Heather and Dr. Dean talk about what it means to be prepped for a sibling's death your entire life and still be blindsided when it comes. They discuss the compound losses that followed: the nephew Heather is now raising, the nephew she may never see again, the two-year custody battle that put her grief on hold, and the loss of her mother to pancreatic cancer less than two years after Melissa's death. They also discuss ambiguous loss, the chaos that gets left behind when someone dies without warning, and the slow work of finding ways to carry Melissa forward.

In this episode you will:

  • Hear Heather's story of being Melissa's protector since childhood
  • Becoming the sister who found herself raising her nephew after Melissa died.
  • Learn about the specific grief of losing a chronically ill sibling
  • The ambiguous loss of a nephew cut off from the family, and what it means to grieve when circumstances won't let you.
  • Be inspired by Heather's honesty, her community, and the small ways Melissa still shows up
