Welcome to the Truman Charities podcast. I am Jamie Truman, your host. Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there and especially my husband, jerry Truman, who is also the co-founder of Truman Charities. Without Jerry we would not have Truman Charities. You know, truman Charities began because Jerry had a good friend who was in remission from leukemia and she was participating in the Light the Night Walk in Rockville and she asked if he would be a sponsor and he said you know, let me see if I could do something a little bit better than that and let me see if I'll throw a party. He just threw a simple party to see how much that he could raise and turned out that that night he raised a little over $8,000 for LLS. And since then it has continued to grow and we have three events per year. We've raised a little over $2 million, which we're really happy about because we are 100% volunteer-based organization. So every single dollar that is raised through our events go directly to the charity that it is benefiting. So I want to say a special happy Father's Day to Jerry.
Speaker 0:But I did want to talk to all of the men out there and let them know just how important they are within the family unit and I felt so strongly about that that I decided to write a book Vanishing Fathers the Ripple Effect on Tomorrow's Generation and I decided to write this book after Iishing Fathers the Ripple Effect on Tomorrow's Generation. And I decided to write this book after I had started my podcast in 2021. And I've interviewed gosh 140, some different nonprofits and just people that are doing some great things within the community, and I noticed this common thread that seemed to be having a major impact on the rate of high school dropouts, use with substance abuse, homeless teens, teen pregnancy and then also women being exploited, and I couldn't believe that this one issue was causing so much destruction within our society, one issue that had such a profound impact on the outcome of a child, regardless of their background, and one issue that no one is talking about. I never really understood what a large impact that fathers had on a child. Now, if you know me personally, I had a complicated relationship with my father. He had substance abuse issues and passed away when I was 20 years old and I knew that that had an impact on myself and my family, but I never considered the impact that fathers had in society. Let me paint a picture for you, so you have an idea of some statistics behind this, of some statistics behind this. So 71% of high school dropouts do not have a father, 70% of youths with substance abuse issues do not have a dad, 90% of homeless youths do not have a father, and one out of every three teenage girls that grow up without a father will become pregnant, and that's opposed to less than 5% of girls that grow up with an involved father being pregnant as a teen.
Speaker 0:Fathers have such an impact on their child's lives and I don't feel like it is very much recognized. I grew up with a single mom and I have the utmost respect for single moms because in my opinion, they're left with the hardest job, which is having to be two people, and a father and mother each bring unique traits to that child, so it's an impossible job. So I wanted people to become aware of what I learned and that's why I wrote the book Vanishing Fathers, and I spoke with people from all different backgrounds to learn what it was like growing up without a father, the challenges they faced, how they were able to overcome those obstacles. A couple individuals that I spoke with for the book was I don't know if you remember this 90s rock band but they were really famous and they sang the single Father of Mine. I spoke with the lead singer, art Alexakis of Everclear and why he decided to write that song. We got the story behind it and he even said that people now which is, oh my gosh, I guess like 30 or 20 some years ago still come up to him and tell him the effect that that song had on them growing up. And then I also spoke with Peter Grumble and that story I'm going to re-air next week because that was actually our most downloaded episode out of the entire series. So if you don't know this already, everyone that I interviewed for the book I actually had aired those interviews on a Vanishing Fathers podcast series and Peter Grumval's episode was the most downloaded and most talked about episode. Now Peter grew up in a cult and then was able to overcome all of these obstacles and the things that he had to experience as a child were unimaginable. He was able to overcome that, graduate from Yale Law School and now is a loving husband and a father of three children and good friends of Jerry and I. So get excited. If you go back, the series is in the 90s episodes. Go to like episode 90-ish and then you'll see the entire Vanishing Father series, if you want to hear. There's so many more people that I interviewed and it was, as I mentioned, people from all different backgrounds, and so it really is very interesting.
Speaker 0:And at the end of the book I say if young men can only take one takeaway from this book, it is that you are not only wanted, you're needed, but, most importantly, you are loved. I also wanted this book to help children growing up without a father. We wanted to pay it forward, and so all of the proceeds from the book are going to charities that help at-risk youths. So now so far, which I'm pretty proud of, we've been able to raise a little over $80,000 from charity from the proceeds of that book. So I wanna end with that. I want all the fathers out there that just know how important that they are within the family. We love you and we appreciate all of you. Today I hope that you're sitting around and you're enjoying your family as you should. I actually am right now at my father-in-law's house with my entire you know, all of my in-laws and we're celebrating my husband, my brother-in-law and my father-in-law today picking crabs at the beach. I recorded this a few days ago. So I hope you guys are enjoying yourself as much as I am with my husband and our boys. So happy Father's Day to everyone.

Speaker 0:And we have our next event. As I said, we have three events per year. Our Family Fun event is going to be September 7th, the Knights of Columbus, 2 to 5 pm. It's going to be benefiting Just Trying it, just Trying. It is a local charity that helps families that have children in treatment for pediatric cancer. They do that by hosting a kids triathlon. Both of my two younger boys and a lot of their friends are going to be doing this triathlon together, and so we're going to have a really family-friendly fundraiser. We're going to have Marazzi pizza truck, clayboy shaved ice and Moon Bounce open bar all the good stuff for everyone to enjoy.
Speaker 0:So please make sure to come by that. But if you want to register, or if you can't make it, but you just want to be a part of Truman Charities and you want to learn about our upcoming events that we have, because we also have our annual Halloween party that will be benefiting Salute Military Golf Association. I did a podcast with them for Veterans Day, so please go back to our Veterans Day special to hear about all the wonderful work that they're doing for our veterans. And then we have our annual Derby party, which is obviously in May. And don't forget Bethesda's Best Happy Hours. We have about four or five of those per year. They're not charitably inclined, but they are a really great way for people to come together in the community, learn about each other. It's just a fun, casual happy hour. So thanks again for tuning in to another episode of the Truman Charities Podcast Until next time.
