00:11:36.960 The present of peace. 00:11:37.120 --> 00:11:56.080 And for the remainder of my time, what I want to do is I want to focus our hearts and our minds on three takeaways, three simple takeaways, three simple theological truths that I think we find in our passage that we could take with us, not only for this season, but for the seasons to come. 00:11:56.559 --> 00:12:01.759 Here's the first truth I have for you: God is sovereign. 00:12:02.639 --> 00:12:03.679 God is sovereign. 00:12:03.919 --> 00:12:10.639 Another way of saying that is that God is all powerful and always in control. 00:12:11.360 --> 00:12:14.240 We see this in our first seven verses. 00:12:14.399 --> 00:12:20.320 Looking at our passage, we learned that the Roman leader of the day was requiring a census. 00:12:20.799 --> 00:12:28.080 Theologians point out that when Rome required a census, there was really only two reasons why they were required census. 00:12:28.320 --> 00:12:38.960 The first reason was that they were trying to see how many men and boys they had that were war-ready because maybe they were on a conquest again, and they needed to see what their firepower looked like. 00:12:39.440 --> 00:12:43.519 And the second reason was for taxation purposes. 00:12:44.240 --> 00:12:52.559 Either way, the backdrop of those reasons is a loss of autonomy, a loss of self-regulation. 00:12:53.440 --> 00:13:03.120 It's a reality that someone or something outside of yourself, uh, some circumstance that you can't control is directing your life. 00:13:03.440 --> 00:13:13.440 We learned that for Joseph and Mary, this man had to leave Nazareth at what seemed like the absolute worst time to travel. 00:13:14.240 --> 00:13:21.519 The Bible tells us that they had to go up to Bethlehem to be registered with Joseph's family line. 00:13:21.840 --> 00:13:29.840 And this is interesting because when you look at a map, when it says go up to Jerusalem, when you look at a map, Jerusalem is actually south of Nazareth. 00:13:30.159 --> 00:13:31.600 So it was confusing, right? 00:13:31.679 --> 00:13:35.360 But then you have to understand that Jerusalem sits on top of a mountain. 00:13:36.080 --> 00:13:45.840 So here comes this pregnant woman at the worst time in her pregnancy, having to travel 90 miles, and she didn't ride on a donkey. 00:13:46.240 --> 00:13:48.720 I know that, and that would be terrible anyway. 00:13:48.960 --> 00:13:49.200 Right? 00:13:49.360 --> 00:13:51.919 Riding on the donkey for 90 miles and you're not my pregnancy. 00:13:52.080 --> 00:13:52.639 00:14:12.080 Verses 6 and 7 tells us that while they were in Jerusalem, the time came for her to give birth. 00:14:12.559 --> 00:14:20.720 And when she had delivered Jesus, she wrapped him tightly in cloth and laid him in a manger or feeding trough. 00:14:21.919 --> 00:14:28.480 When looking at it through the lens of what's convenient and maybe what's comfortable, the situation seems to be a mess. with modern advances, last-minute travel with the baby on the way is a disaster. 00:14:39.840 --> 00:14:41.200 It's a nightmare. 00:14:41.919 --> 00:14:55.440 Yeah, what is a nightmare to our sensibilities and what's a nightmare to what we think, these why God moments, we find out Jesus used to be a butt God moment. 00:14:56.960 --> 00:15:02.639 And this butt God moment changed the course of human history. 00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:07.200 Galatians 4, 5, 4 through 5 says this. 00:15:08.080 --> 00:15:11.919 But when the right time came, catch that. 00:15:12.000 --> 00:15:19.120 But when the right time came, God sent his son, born of a woman, subject to the law. 00:15:19.360 --> 00:15:31.440 God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us by his very I'm sorry, so he could adopt us as his very own children. 00:15:32.879 --> 00:15:35.759 I love that that scripture says at the right time. 00:15:36.399 --> 00:15:40.799 Because when I read that story, I can scream, God, this is the wrong time. 00:15:43.039 --> 00:15:47.200 This family is leaving home, going to a faraway place. 00:15:47.360 --> 00:15:49.919 A lot of people are traveling into town. 00:15:50.879 --> 00:15:57.279 Apparently, when they get there, they're trying to find a place to stay, and every place is. 00:15:58.159 --> 00:16:00.879 Now, I don't think it was dramatic as the cartoons, right? 00:16:01.039 --> 00:16:04.159 It wasn't a rainy night and it was 2 a.m. 00:16:04.399 --> 00:16:08.080 and they're going from door to door, like trying to figure out what place to get into. 00:16:08.399 --> 00:16:09.440 I don't think that's what it was. 00:16:09.600 --> 00:16:14.080 Most theologian historians say that they actually uh were there for a while. 00:16:14.399 --> 00:16:17.039 The Bible said uh while they were there. 00:16:17.279 --> 00:16:20.639 So it implies that they just didn't roll into town and she went in labor. 00:16:20.799 --> 00:16:22.480 They had to be there for a little bit. 00:16:22.720 --> 00:16:26.240 And they were probably staying at a family member's house. 00:16:26.639 --> 00:16:30.879 All right, but but it's clear that this family member wasn't a wrench, a rich family member. 00:16:31.120 --> 00:16:32.159 They didn't have a palace. 00:16:32.240 --> 00:16:38.320 And the way that they they describe it is most homes had uh kind of two stories. 00:16:38.879 --> 00:16:39.360 All right. 00:16:39.600 --> 00:16:45.679 So they had a main level, all right, that will sometimes be called the upper room. 00:16:45.759 --> 00:16:47.440 That's where the people hung out. 00:16:47.759 --> 00:16:55.840 And then you go you went down three steps, and this was the area that housed the animals. 00:16:56.879 --> 00:17:04.960 And so what historians believe is actually being portrayed here is that they were staying at a family member's house along with other people. 00:17:05.200 --> 00:17:12.079 When it came time for Mary to have a baby, they needed to find a place that could accommodate a woman pushing out a baby. 00:17:12.240 --> 00:17:18.559 And hanging out in the family room with 20 people doesn't lend itself to push out a baby. 00:17:37.519 She had a baby, and likely there was a speeding trough filled with fresh hay that this loving, caring mother wrapped her child tightly in and laid them there to rest. 00:17:38.319 --> bad seasons. 00:18:24.559 --> 00:18:32.160 And if we want to learn from Mary, if we want to learn from Joseph, if we want to rest in the reality that God is sovereign, we have to believe that here in our hearts. 00:18:33.359 --> 00:18:56.000 So when we look at it again, what seemed like a tyrannical leader calling for a census that produced unexpected travel and induced labor for a mother in a less than adequate accommodation was actually the God who is above all earthly power, using human decisions to bring to pass what he had promised years ago through the prophets. 00:18:58.480 --> use anything, anyone, any season, in any circumstance for his kingdom purposes as he calls us. 00:19:21.839 --> 00:19:24.160 I know some of you might need to tug that away. 00:19:26.079 --> 00:19:29.680 Maybe you just came out of a season, or maybe you're in a season. 00:19:30.559 --> 00:19:36.559 But that is hard to believe, and I just want to promise you that like the seasons don't determine the character of God. 00:19:38.640 --> 00:19:42.160 What you're going through doesn't define who God is. 00:19:43.680 --> 00:19:58.000 And the Bible declares over and over and over that God can and will use everything that you've experienced in your life, good, bad, and ugly. 00:19:59.440 --> 00:20:02.880 For kingdom good if we're willing to give it to Him. 00:20:04.799 --> 00:20:13.359 Now, what we can't do is we can't step into these moments and point at God and say, God, why are you doing this? 00:20:14.160 --> 00:20:16.400 Because oftentimes that's what we do, right? 00:20:17.680 00:20:31.759 And I think the posture that we gotta take here is God, what are you doing here? 00:20:35.279 --> 00:20:43.680 The second truth that I want to give you this morning from our passage is this is that the good news is for all people and all seasons. 00:20:44.319 --> 00:20:48.000 The good news is for all people and all seasons. 00:20:48.160 --> 00:20:52.240 We see this verses 8 through 12. 00:20:52.640 --> 00:21:12.960 You know, one of the biggest issues with how Jesus and the gospel has been presented over the years is that somehow, in some way, the simple message that God has interrupted our plan of self-destruction with the way of escaping his son Jesus has become a complex members-only proposition for a special few. 00:21:15.519 --> 00:21:19.599 We like to put barriers in front of people and make the gospel complex. 00:21:20.319 --> 00:21:23.119 But but the good news is simple. 00:21:24.240 --> 00:21:39.680 In our passage, we were introduced to some nameless and faceless, poor and unimportant shepherds that were somehow worthy enough to receive the good news and to experience the glory of the Lord shining around them. 00:21:41.279 --> 00:21:44.880 Now, as I read that, my mind ran back to another moment in scripture. 00:21:44.960 --> 00:21:48.640 It ran back to the moment in scripture in Exodus when Moses was with the Lord. 00:21:48.720 --> 00:21:50.799
