here in our church and what the Lord has provided to us and thankful for it. 00:00:22.879 --> 00:00:45.119 I don't know if you've ever had an experience before where you've had a health scare, but I'll never forget being a high school student when I got word that my father had had a widowmaker heart attack, rushed to the hospital, cracked his chest, open heart surgery, quadruple bypass. 00:00:45.200 --> 00:00:47.280 We didn't know if he was going to live or die. 00:00:47.840 --> 00:01:02.719 As a high school student, you can imagine the fear in that moment for my family, for my mom, the people who supported us in our church. 00:01:03.520 --> 00:01:28.640 I don't know if you've experienced something like that before or you've had some type of a scare like that before, but not too many years ago, in January of 2017, I led a group of college students to this conference, this massive conference in Atlanta, Georgia, called the Passion Conference. 00:01:28.879 --> 00:01:49.840 And we took a hundred students or so from different colleges, and we went into the dome there, and there were some 70,000 college students present, and this whole couple of days that kicks off the year is filled with worship and preaching from some of the best, most talented preachers and speakers, and the best worship. 00:01:50.000 --> 00:02:02.799 And to my surprise, midway through the conference, there was a lady who was brought on the stage in a wheelchair by the name Catherine Wolfe with her husband Jay. 00:02:04.159 --> 00:02:09.919 This woman, Catherine, began to speak and she spoke with the slur. 00:02:10.719 --> 00:02:18.400 She didn't have full control over a part of her or half of her body. 00:02:18.800 --> 00:02:22.719 And that was due to the fact that she'd endured a massive stroke. 00:02:23.039 --> 00:02:46.879 See Jay and his wife Catherine early, early in their life and in their marriage, when they were just 26 years old, college sweethearts, after they got married and were doing all the things that young couples do, having children. 00:02:47.360 --> 00:02:55.919 One random day, Catherine was making a meal for some other couple of families that also had had children, and she had a headache. 00:02:56.319 --> 00:03:03.599 And just like most moms would do, she just kept bearing through that headache and knew that it was gonna go away. 00:03:03.759 --> 00:03:10.879 And she was making the meals, and it got to the point where the pressure was so much on her eyes, she said, You know, I'm just gonna lay down for just a second. 00:03:10.960 --> 00:03:17.919 I'm just gonna take a little snooze, take a little nap until this this headache goes by. 00:03:18.639 --> 00:03:25.280 But the headache didn't stop, and instead, she was experiencing a massive stroke at the age of 26. 00:03:28.319 --> 00:03:31.039 She realized that she couldn't move her body fully. 00:03:31.120 --> 00:03:37.360 She began to scream and yell for her husband Jay, who came and frantically called the ambulance to come. 00:03:39.280 --> 00:03:42.159 He was still in school to become a lawyer. 00:03:42.560 --> 00:03:52.639 And the last thing that they ever would have considered happening would be that his wife Catherine would be fighting for our life on that just normal day. 00:03:53.360 --> 00:03:54.800 Rushed to the hospital. 00:03:55.520 --> 00:04:00.639 Doctors and nurses crowded around and escorted Jay out of the room. 00:04:02.879 --> 00:04:16.879 The doctor came and spoke to him and said, Your wife has had a serious stroke, and she's entering into surgery, and it may be unlikely that she survives the surgery. 00:04:18.800 --> 00:04:36.720 About that time in the hallway, he saw a gurney with someone being pushed down the hallway, and he noticed that it was his wife Catherine, and he went and grabbed her hand as she went by, and he thought to himself, Is this the last time that I'll ever be able to say I love you to my wife? 00:04:36.879 --> 00:04:41.839 As she was wheeled past him in the hallway to the surgery. 00:04:44.560 --> 00:04:50.399 Now, some years later, Catherine has endured surgery after surgery after surgery. 00:04:52.639 --> 00:05:10.480 And even though she's not able to fully function like she once did before, the Lord has used her to begin to speak, even with slurred speech, across the country and nation, of the fact that it's her hope in Christ that has brought healing to her. 00:05:10.560 --> 00:05:13.360 So much so that she's written a book called Hope Heals. 00:05:26.160 --> 00:05:27.839 Now, I know this. going through, something that somebody did or hurt you. 00:06:05.680 --> 00:06:15.360 Maybe right now you're in the room and you're very skeptical of even what we're doing or the word of God because there's a bitterness that's taken root inside of you. 00:06:15.759 --> 00:06:24.800 And that bitter bitterness, you'd rather hold on to it because you can actually control it versus letting it go and giving vulnerability to the Lord for Him to do a work in your life. 00:06:26.879 --> 00:06:33.120 Maybe you've come in today and you've said before, you know what, I'm I'm against organized religion. partnership, I love her dearly, and God loves what we're doing right now. 00:07:14.319 --> 00:07:16.319 He loves us gathered. 00:07:17.120 --> 00:07:31.439 Maybe you've turned your mind off to religion, and religion being man's attempt to get to God, but instead you haven't realized that Jesus didn't come for religion, but Jesus came and is this his attempt to come to us and to get us. 00:07:32.319 --> 00:07:44.399 Not that we can work our way, not that we can get anything on our own, that we can earn our way into good graces, but instead that Jesus has devised a master plan to get it is to be called to as a believer. 00:08:34.720 --> 00:08:46.320 Romans 15, 13 says, May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:08:46.639 --> 00:08:58.399 See, it's the work of the Holy Spirit, the the fruit of the Holy Spirit, joy and peace that that produces a hope inside of us that we're called to as believers to be overflowing with. 00:08:59.440 --> 00:09:10.559 That we would not have a life that is just going with the flow, but instead there would be an overflow of hope in the gospel and hope in the power of God. 00:09:11.120 --> 00:09:30.399 That you would be a person who's known as someone who has high hopes and situations and not always a naysayer or a pessimist or the glass half empty, but instead for you to be overflowing with the joy and peace because you've been saved, bought with a price by the one and only Jesus. 00:09:32.320 --> 00:09:33.840 See, that's our calling. 00:09:34.080 --> 00:09:47.279 Our calling for us is that we, that we may allow the God of hope, the God that gives us hope, to allow it to overflow out of our lives. 00:09:47.759 --> 00:09:53.840 And today we see a story of a woman in Scripture who didn't give up hope. 00:09:54.639 --> 00:10:01.759 A woman who was going through something very difficult and hard, a physical ailment. 00:10:02.720 --> 00:10:08.480 But even in the face of the physical ailment that she was experiencing, she didn't give up hope. 00:10:10.159 --> 00:10:11.679 Instead, she continued to work. 00:10:11.840 --> 00:10:19.919 Now, this story is this story of a woman in the scripture, it's recorded in three of the four gospels, but she's never named. 00:10:20.639 --> 00:10:22.159 She's a nobody. 00:10:24.080 --> 00:10:31.919 And she's dealing with this issue, and she's dealing with an issue of bleeding, of constant bleeding that she has experienced for 12 years. 00:10:32.080 --> 00:10:52.879 Now, we don't know if this is a feminine bleeding or if this is another type of bleeding that it's not it's not clear in the scripture, but we know is this is that if you have any kind of ongoing illness like this or any kind of issue with blood, by way of the Old Testament and the laws of the Old Testament and of the Levitical law, because this the temple and the synagogue was set up for this place of purity, it was a foreshadowing. 00:10:53.039 --> 00:11:02.000 We weren't yet in the freedom that Christ has given us because of her issue, she was not allowed to be in the temple in the synagogue because of her physical ailment. 00:11:02.080 --> 00:11:03.519 She was an outcast. 00:11:06.399 --> 00:11:10.320 Dealing with this issue for twelve long years. 00:11:12.480 --> 00:11:25.279 Not only was she an outcast because she couldn't enter the temple, but anybody that she touched would be then deemed unclean and would have to go through a ceremony purification until the following day. 00:11:26.000 --> 00:11:36.159 No one could sit on a couch with her or on a bed with her, no one could give her a hug without then also being called unclean. 00:11:37.759 --> 00:11:44.399 But this woman, in a whole 12 years, she never gave up hope. 00:11:44.879 --> 00:11:48.480 Look at Mark chapter 5, verse 25. 00:11:49.840 --> 00:11:59.200 Jesus is coming through a crowd of people, and uh the the scripture records a woman in the crowd had suffered for 12 years with constant bleeding. 00:11:59.360 --> 00:12:10.000 She had suffered a great deal from uh from many doctors, and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had not gotten better. 00:12:10.159 --> 00:12:12.720 In fact, she had gotten worse. 00:12:14.799 --> 00:12:17.039 She had heard about Jesus. 00:12:17.279 --> 00:12:21.840 So she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe. 00:12:23.679 --> 00:12:32.720 And she thought to herself, if I could just touch his robe, I will be healed. 00:12:33.120 --> 00:12:35.200 Immediately, everyone say, immediately. 00:12:36.320 --> 00:12:37.759 The bleeding stopped. 00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:44.639 And she could feel in her body that she had been healed of this terrible condition. 00:12:45.759 --> 00:12:54.720 Jesus realizing at once that healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, Who touched my robe? 00:12:56.159 --> 00:12:59.759 His disciples said to him, Look at the crowd passing around you. 00:12:59.919 --> 00:13:01.519 How can you ask who touched me? 00:13:02.000 --> 00:13:05.519 Disciples saying, What a silly question, Jesus. 00:13:05.679 --> 00:13:07.039 Look at all these people. 00:13:08.559 --> 00:13:09.840 Verse 32. 00:13:10.879 --> 00:13:13.600 But he kept on looking around to see who had done it. 00:13:13.759 --> 00:13:23.039 Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. 00:13:23.120 --> 00:13:27.200 And he said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well. 00:13:27.279 --> 00:13:28.240 Go in peace. 00:13:28.399 --> 00:13:30.559 Your suffering is over. 00:13:32.639 --> 00:13:35.440 There was a crowd pressed around Jesus. 00:13:36.720 --> 00:13:48.159 He's walking through, and there's many people, so many people touching him, so many people around him in the crowd that the disciples even think that it's a silly question for him to ask who touched him. 00:13:48.320 --> 00:13:53.519 But there's a difference of being around Jesus and being in touch with Jesus. 00:13:54.799 --> 00:13:59.360 And today I'm wondering: are you in touch with Jesus? 00:14:00.559 --> 00:14:07.519 Some of you have been around Jesus for too long without being in touch with him. 00:14:09.600 --> 00:14:21.279 You've been around the church, you've been around people of faith, you've been around things that are happening in peace, but you don't have it and you don't have the healing and you don't know why. 00:14:21.440 --> 00:14:25.120 You've been riding on grandma's faith for way too long. 00:14:26.080 --> 00:14:38.799 When somebody asks you about your faith or where you go to church or whatever, you say, Oh, yeah, my grandma took me to church when I was a kid, and I went to a VBS one time, but you know, it didn't really work out for me. 00:14:39.039 --> 00:14:41.600 You know, it didn't really work for me. 00:14:44.960 --> 00:14:48.559 Did it not work or were you not truly in touch with Jesus? 00:14:49.440 --> 00:14:50.720 I never forget the story. 00:14:50.879 --> 00:14:52.720 My first assignment in ministry was in Somerset. 00:14:52.799 --> 00:14:58.879 I talk about it a lot, and a part of a church there, and there were it was a large church, and there was, it was multi-generational. 00:14:58.960 --> 00:15:02.960 There were young people, there were young families, there were lots of older people in the church. 00:15:03.120 --> 00:15:11.919 And Ann Gover, she married a man named Oakley, and Oakley was at the time that they got married, both widdeders, they got married in their 70s. 00:15:12.080 --> 00:15:29.360 He began to attend church with her in their 70s, and and they were attending church every single week, and every time the doors would open, Oakley was there, and and I remember many services that they were a part of, and they would be coming so consistently, and along the way, we heard the fact that Oakley was not a believer. 00:15:30.080 --> 00:15:39.759 And Oakley in his late 70s continued to come to church and continued to come to church, and he was there every single Sunday, but had not received Jesus. 00:15:39.919 --> 00:15:43.200 He was around Jesus, but he wasn't yet in touch with Jesus. 00:15:43.440 --> 00:15:52.159 And I'll never forget the Sunday in his early 80s that he accepted Christ as his savior and was baptized. 00:15:52.399 --> 00:15:54.559 Oldest person I've ever seen be baptized. 00:15:54.799 --> 00:15:58.399 Oakley Gover, 80, early 80s being baptized. 00:15:58.559 --> 00:16:02.559 Today, Oakley is 91 years old and is walking with Jesus. 00:16:04.720 --> 00:16:08.240 You can be around Jesus without being in touch with him. 00:16:12.320 --> 00:16:15.679 And you can certainly be around Jesus without trusting in him. 00:16:17.840 --> 00:16:22.399 Jeremiah 29, 11 says, For I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord. 00:16:22.559 --> 00:16:26.000 Plans to prosper you, not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. 00:16:26.080 --> 00:16:32.559 And this is a declaration to those in the Old Testament, but this is a true statement that rings true through the New Testament as well. 00:16:33.279 --> 00:16:35.840 That God has a plan and a purpose for each one of you. 00:16:36.080 --> 00:16:46.799 That there are good works that He's designed before you were even born, for you to walk in and to walk in as His masterpiece that He's created you for. 00:16:50.000 --> 00:16:55.840 Sometimes that's hard for us to imagine and think with the tragedies of life that we experience. 00:16:56.480 --> 00:17:03.039 A second assignment in ministry was in Charleston, South Carolina, where we became friends with a young lady now named Emily Kerr. 00:17:03.519 --> 00:17:10.559 Emily, when she was a college student at the College of Charleston, she was engaged to a young athlete named Chad. 00:17:10.799 --> 00:17:14.000 They were engaged to be married and everything seemed to be going well. 00:17:14.079 --> 00:17:30.400 And Chad, one day playing basketball, an athlete on the court, one random day playing with his friends, shooting basketball, working hard, had a massive heart attack in his early 20s and died there on the floor. 00:17:31.839 --> 00:17:36.559 Set Emily into a tailspin, not knowing what to do. 00:17:37.519 --> 00:17:46.799 This young woman who had a whole life planned out ahead of her with her soon-to-be husband now completely changed. 00:17:48.880 --> 00:18:10.880 We met Emily a couple of years after Chad's passing, and as she began to work through the grief of losing the love of her life, she began to go into the work that she had intended for her to do work in the nonprofit world and for her to be in education and to serve Title I schools, and she began an organization called Chad's Hope. 00:18:11.119 --> 00:18:13.119 Today it's known as Charleston Hope. 00:18:13.279 --> 00:18:14.559 Everybody say hope. 00:18:28.960 --> 00:18:31.440 And that the enemy was trying to pull her into despair. 00:18:31.519 --> 00:18:41.440 And Emily, my Emily, looked at Emily Kerr and she said, I want you to know that you are not living God's plan B for your life. 00:18:42.319 --> 00:18:44.079 You're living God's plan A. 00:18:44.240 --> 00:18:46.960 It was never intended for Chad to be your husband. 00:18:47.039 --> 00:18:50.880 You need to move forward in what God's called you, a hope and a future. 00:18:51.759 --> 00:18:55.359 Church, today, you're not walking in God's plan B for you. 00:18:55.519 --> 00:18:57.200 You're walking in his plan A. 00:18:58.480 --> 00:19:03.359 The tragedies, the things of life that you've experienced have gone through. 00:19:03.680 --> 00:19:06.400 The struggle is what makes us stronger. 00:19:06.799 --> 00:19:12.559 The struggle is what allows us to be able to walk in the hope of who Jesus is. 00:19:12.880 --> 00:19:23.759 See, this lady who's dealt with this blood issue for 12 years, never gave up hope. 00:19:23.839 --> 00:19:24.480 She continued. 00:19:24.559 --> 00:19:53.839 She went to doctor, and doctor, she spent her entire wife's money and was trying to find a cure so that she could then stop being this outcast from society, but that she could rejoin with the life and family that she wanted to be a part of, and she was not letting go of hope, but she was holding out hope, and she heard of this man named Jesus, and she said, I've got to go touch him. 00:19:54.799 --> 00:20:00.240 If I could just touch his robe, I'll be healed. 00:20:01.279 --> 00:20:11.200 You know, Jesus, when he was speaking to this woman, he didn't say, Woman, your touch has saved you. 00:20:11.440 --> 00:20:15.279 He looked at her and said, Daughter, your faith has made you well. 00:20:19.200 --> 00:20:22.640 And I don't want you to miss this right here. 00:20:24.079 --> 00:20:26.720 The King James Version says, You've been made whole. 00:20:26.799 --> 00:20:27.759 I love that. 00:20:28.720 --> 00:20:30.400 You've been made whole. 00:20:31.200 --> 00:20:33.680 You've been healed, you've been made complete. 00:20:34.079 --> 00:20:38.160 But there's something very special about this woman and this story. 00:20:39.519 --> 00:20:45.680 That she was saved, she was healed by the faith that she had. 00:20:46.799 --> 00:20:51.279 That she would say, if I could just touch his robe, I know that I will be healed. 00:20:51.359 --> 00:20:54.079 I believe in who he is, I believe that this is the Messiah. 00:20:54.160 --> 00:20:55.920 I believe that he can do the miraculous. 00:20:56.079 --> 00:21:00.000 And Jesus looks at her and says, Your faith has made you well. 00:21:00.559 --> 00:21:04.079 She didn't give up hope, but she placed her hope in the right place. 00:21:04.160 --> 00:21:09.440 And when she did, not only was she healed physically, but she was also healed spiritually. 00:21:10.640 --> 00:21:12.799 She put her hope and trust in Jesus. 00:21:12.880 --> 00:21:13.839 And how do I know that? 00:21:14.000 --> 00:21:17.839 It's because Jesus responds to her and he says, daughter. 00:21:18.000 --> 00:21:19.119 Everybody look at me. 00:21:19.359 --> 00:21:20.559 He says, daughter. 00:21:21.200 --> 00:21:28.799 This is the only recorded time that Jesus ever calls a woman daughter. 00:21:30.319 --> 00:21:40.720 This is the only moment in the scripture where Jesus speaks to a woman and doesn't call her by her name or call her woman, but he calls her daughter. 00:21:41.200 --> 00:21:51.839 She moved from being in a place and she came to Jesus despised and in despair, but she left a daughter of the king. 00:21:52.160 --> 00:21:59.839 She came of a place, came in a place of hurt and of brokenness and of despair. 00:22:09.599 --> 00:22:10.720 The family of --> 00:23:16.880 She said, My experience has called me, has caused me to redefine healing and discover a hope that heals the most broken places, our souls. 00:23:17.759 --> 00:23:20.160 What has happened to me is extreme. 00:23:20.480 --> 00:23:23.279 However, it's not different from what everyone deals with. 00:23:23.519 --> 00:23:26.799 I'm sort of a microcosm of what we all feel. 00:23:27.039 --> 00:23:33.680 I can barely walk, even with a cane, but who feels free even if they can? 00:23:34.720 --> 00:23:40.960 My face is paralyzed, but who feels beautiful even when they look normal? 00:23:44.160 --> 00:23:56.079 I have no coordination in my right hand, so I can't hold things, even my child, but who feels like a competent parent, even if they have all their faculties intact? 00:23:57.440 --> 00:24:02.319 For months I could not eat and even today have difficulty swallowing. 00:24:02.559 --> 00:24:08.319 But who feels fully satisfied even if they can enjoy every delectable treat they desire? 00:24:08.960 --> 00:24:11.519 I'm tired almost all the time now. 00:24:12.400 --> 00:24:16.240 But who always feels energized and engaged fully in their life? 00:24:16.559 --> 00:24:23.680 My voice is messed up, but who feels understood even if they can speak plainly? 00:24:23.920 --> 00:24:29.119 I have double vision, but who sees everything clearly even if they can see normally? 00:24:29.279 --> 00:24:32.319 My future is uncertain, but whose is it? 00:24:34.079 --> 00:24:38.240 So no matter the situation, universally, people feel what I'm living out. have been blessed to suffer greatly at such a young age because it informs the way we live the rest of our lives. 00:25:17.599 --> 00:25:24.640 We have learned that when everything else is gone, hope 00:25:55.200 Are you overflowing with hope? 00:25:56.079 --> 00:26:07.519 Or is the enemy trapped some area of your life that you're still feeling a darkness and a hopelessness attached to it?
