this uh this new future home multiply, and we don't see it as a destination, but instead we see it as a tool for the gospel so that we can be a blessing and to become a ministry center for all the Lord's doing, and along the way, um, as I update you on uh some of the things that are happening, um, one thing that is extremely encouraging is that this large project that our our uh young church has now stepped into, uh, we are right now almost four-fifths of the way there financially, which is incredible because the cost of this project is just over half a million dollars. 00:04:02.240 --> And we fall into the trap of complaining and bickering about the issues and the and the and the evil and the the difficulty of the day versus us stepping into the mission with Jesus, his mission, and being a part of the action of the restoration that he wants to bring. 00:05:52.800 --> 00:06:01.040 I'm thankful that uh this last week I got to lead the second Bible study at K-State football with 30 players in the field house. 00:06:01.279 --> 00:06:08.240 Don't tell me that we can't have an impact on teens and on kids and college students and schools here in this community. 00:06:08.399 --> the trap of the complaint or of the holy huddle that just sits out and talks about how bad the world is, we are going to go out and we're going to believe the promise that the gates of hell will not prevail against his church and be a part of the restorative work that God's called us to. 00:06:50.399 --> 00:06:53.920 Now, there's somebody in the scripture who did that exact same thing. 00:06:54.160 --> 00:07:01.120 And we're going to take a look today at the life of a man, a governor, a leader, a name of Nehemiah. 00:07:01.279 --> 00:07:06.720 And in weeks from now, we're going to go more in depth in this story of Nehemiah in the Old Testament. 00:07:06.879 --> 00:07:16.480 But to set the stage for you, to not be all talk, but to be action and to take action with the Lord. 00:07:17.120 --> 00:07:28.319 At this point in the story of the Scripture and the Old Testament, the people of God, the Jewish people, have been under captivity from the Babylonian Empire. 00:07:28.480 --> 00:07:35.920 Essentially, they were taken over, they were overtaken in war and then taken as slaves to a foreign land. 00:07:37.360 --> 00:07:44.720 And after their captivity and after their enslavement, they are allowed to go back to Judah, back to Jerusalem. 00:07:44.800 --> 00:07:59.759 And when they get back to Jerusalem, they see that the city, the place, the temple where so many, such an important and central part of the Jewish faith has been torn down. 00:08:00.079 --> 00:08:02.160 And the walls are in rubble. 00:08:02.399 --> 00:08:08.639 And so the people of God, they come together and they rebuild the temple in 516 BC. 00:08:09.360 --> 00:08:21.439 And but in the midst of the temple being built, for still 70 more years, the walls of Jerusalem lay waste and rubble. 00:08:22.879 --> 00:08:30.000 And these walls that now have been torn down for almost 150 years. 00:08:30.240 --> 00:08:35.039 Nehemiah is talking to some of his family members, and he hears about the fact. 00:08:35.279 --> 00:08:43.279 After his enslavement, his captivity in Babylon, and he's hearing about what's happening, getting a report about what's happening in Jerusalem. 00:08:43.440 --> 00:08:52.559 And some of his family family members tell this they said to me in verse chapter 1, verse 3, they said to me, Things are not going well for those who return to the providence of Judah. 00:08:53.120 --> 00:08:55.440 They're in great trouble and disgrace. 00:08:55.600 --> 00:09:01.039 The walls of Jerusalem have been torn down and the gates have been destroyed by fire. 00:09:01.759 --> 00:09:09.840 The first thing we need to see as we take action, as we take action like Nehemiah did in this first verse, is that we need to define the disgrace. 00:09:11.440 --> 00:09:24.240 He gets a report from his family members that things are not going well, that there's trouble in the land, that what was a place of prominence and a place of glory has now been laid into disgrace. 00:09:25.200 --> 00:09:28.799 I think about the words of John Dewey. 00:09:28.879 --> 00:09:32.000 He says, A problem well stated is a problem half solved. 00:09:33.440 --> 00:09:42.480 How about Albert Einstein when he said, Given one hour to save the world, I would spend 55 minutes defining the problem and five minutes finding the solution. 00:09:42.799 --> 00:09:44.159 Here's what I'm saying. 00:09:44.399 --> 00:09:48.559 You can't fix a problem that you're not willing to name. 00:09:53.279 --> 00:10:04.480 And so when whatever is going on right now in your spiritual life, in your personal life, you can't fix it if you don't speak up, confess it, and tell someone. 00:10:04.960 --> 00:10:07.120 You've got to name your nemesis. 00:10:08.159 --> 00:10:11.440 Some of you have walked in today and you're in great trouble. 00:10:12.159 --> 00:10:18.080 You're in some level of brokenness, of maybe it's finances, maybe it's some type of sin that you're entangled in. 00:10:18.240 --> 00:10:19.200 Maybe it's an addiction. 00:10:19.360 --> 00:10:31.519 Maybe it's a relationship that is broken in your life and it's not yet being fixed, but you're not willing yet to speak out and to find to define it and say, I'm in trouble. 00:10:32.000 --> 00:10:41.039 There is disgrace, and I need Jesus to confess it to and correct it. 00:10:42.879 --> 00:10:44.240 Nehemiah. 00:10:44.960 --> 00:10:49.279 He sees and hears of what's going on in Jerusalem. 00:10:50.399 --> 00:10:53.120 He hears it and it and it impacts him. 00:10:53.840 --> 00:10:55.840 It deeply moves him. 00:10:56.240 --> 00:11:02.559 Because he knows that Jerusalem, the city of God, should not be in disgrace. 00:11:04.879 --> 00:11:09.759 In verse 4, when Nehemiah heard this, he sat down and wept. 00:11:11.200 --> 00:11:17.120 In fact, for days he mourned, fasted, and prayed to the God of heaven. 00:11:17.679 --> 00:11:20.240 Here's what I want to encourage you today. 00:11:20.720 --> 00:11:41.679 Don't be satisfied with broken relationships that are around you, the way that you've sinned against someone and you've not yet forgiven. 00:11:42.000 --> 00:11:51.919 Don't be satisfied with being entangled or entrapped in the sin that is entangling you right now, but instead be ready to reach out to heaven today. 00:11:53.919 --> 00:12:01.840 Here's the thing every single person who's come into the room today has some level of brokenness that's in their life. 00:12:02.480 --> 00:12:05.360 I don't care if you've been a believer for a long, long time. 00:12:05.600 --> 00:12:09.679 Each one of us are walking in today with this thing called sin and a brokenness. 00:12:09.759 --> 00:12:22.159 And it's only by way of us reaching to heaven and asking God to restore us, to redeem us, to change us, and to move us to action are we going to be healed. 00:12:23.440 --> 00:12:25.759 That brokenness can come in many different forms. 00:12:25.919 --> 00:12:32.000 It could be by the fact that maybe today you've walked in the room and you were sinned against, maybe decades ago, maybe even as a child. 00:12:32.240 --> 00:12:37.679 And there's a brokenness, there's a wound there that you so desperately need Jesus to heal. 00:12:38.879 --> 00:12:49.200 You gotta define it, you've got to name it, you've got to give it to the Lord, and you've got to allow him to build into Nehemiah rallies the people of God. 00:14:30.399 --> 00:14:35.600 And we see in uh Nehemiah 2, 17 and 18. 00:14:37.519 --> 00:14:44.159 Nehemiah speaks to the people of God, and he says, Now I've said to them, You know very well what trouble we're in. 00:14:44.399 --> 00:14:47.919 Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire. 00:14:48.080 --> 00:14:52.480 Let us rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and end this disgrace. 00:14:53.120 --> 00:15:07.200 Then I told them about how gracious how the gracious hand of God had been on me, and about my conversation with the king, and they replied at once, Yes, let's rebuild the wall. 00:15:07.440 --> 00:15:10.159 So let's begin the good work. 00:15:12.720 --> 00:15:16.639 When we defined the problem that's going on in ourselves, that's holding us back. 00:15:16.799 --> 00:15:24.799 We then allowed Jesus to address that brokenness and to build us into the new creation and the person that he's called us to be. 00:15:24.960 --> 00:15:28.480 Then we get to begin the good work that he's called us to. 00:15:28.799 --> 00:15:31.519 See, it wasn't just a good idea for Nehemiah. 00:15:31.759 --> 00:15:41.039 He genuinely knew that God's hand had been placed on him for him to be the one to take up the leadership to restore the walls in Jerusalem. 00:15:41.759 --> 00:15:53.840 He knew that the hand of God had come to him and was walking along with him and helping him to lead the people of Israel to rebuild the wall. 00:15:54.000 --> 00:15:57.679 And in doing so, begin this good work. 00:15:59.120 --> 00:16:10.240 And in the same way, we get to be a part of the good work of seeing restoration come to other people through the power of Jesus. 00:16:14.080 --> 00:16:31.840 That whatever it is that is that brokenness that's in your life as God redeems it and restores it, then he gives you a testimony, and that testimony is to share and to love and to care for somebody else, to see them walk out of whatever it is that is point we were cut off with no way to God, but through the power of Jesus on the cross, that he built a way, he built a pathway, he built a bridge by the way of his bloodshed on the cross, that we would be able to be restored, rebuilt, in connection with God that we weren't before, and he did it by dying on the cross in your my place because the wages of sin is death, and he took it on his back
