WEBVTT 00:00:00.560 --> 00:00:01.439 Good morning. 00:00:01.760 --> 00:00:04.639 Forrest Coleman, lead pastor here at Multiply. 00:00:05.120 --> 00:00:06.480 If you're new here today, welcome. 00:00:06.639 --> 00:00:07.519 Glad that you're here. 00:00:07.759 --> 00:00:14.080 As we jump into the next week of our series, Revival Come, and a sermon entitled One True God. 00:00:14.560 --> 00:00:22.399 You know, the last week we jumped in and we're talking about the history and the rich history of revival that's in this nation. 00:00:22.719 --> 00:00:29.679 Talked about the first Great Awakening and uh Jonathan Edwards and George Whitfield and the colonies and a return to God. 00:00:30.239 --> 00:00:40.320 There was another move of God that happened out on the frontier, out in places like Kentucky. 00:00:40.640 --> 00:00:42.799 Called the Second Great Awakening. 00:00:43.119 --> 00:00:49.280 And this came about in 1800, 1801, 1802. 00:00:49.840 --> 00:00:55.439 And it happened just 50 miles from here in central Kentucky. 00:00:55.920 --> 00:01:00.960 Now, I'm not expecting that anybody coming into the room today necessarily knows any of this history. 00:01:01.039 --> 00:01:15.200 You'd have to be a church nerd or have gone through some Bible classes at some point to know about the history I'm going to tell you about today, but I'm telling it to you to be an encouragement and to show you what the Lord has done in this area. 00:01:15.519 --> 00:01:20.079 See, there was this place called Cane Ridge that's about 50 miles from here. 00:01:20.239 --> 00:01:27.840 And basically what happened in the turn of a just a two or three years was this moment that now is deemed as the second great awakening. 00:01:28.079 --> 00:01:38.000 What happened was back in that time, it's estimated that 23,000 people came through revival meetings there and around Cane Ridge. 00:01:39.040 --> 00:01:52.480 If you were to imagine that being today, that would be imagine every single resident of Lexington attending one single revival for percentage-wise. 00:01:53.680 --> 00:01:55.040 So what happened? 00:01:55.280 --> 00:02:14.400 What happened at this Great Awakening, the second Great Awakening, was people came into this area of Cane Ridge and they came to this camp meeting, they experienced the preaching of the word from Methodists, Baptists, Presbyterians that were hungry for God, seeking after him. 00:02:14.719 --> 00:02:26.639 They even said that the crowds at one point were so large that there were no microphones, no amplification, that seven or eight pastors would be standing on tree stumps at one time preaching to the crowds. 00:02:27.360 --> 00:02:31.840 Also, at this point, it included black preachers. 00:02:32.080 --> 00:02:37.520 And it's one of the first recorded instances of black preachers teaching white people at the time. 00:02:38.080 --> 00:02:39.759 Was at this move, this moment. 00:02:40.080 --> 00:02:53.199 And this great awakening that happened of these people who came from Kentucky and from outside of Kentucky to experience God, to learn of Him, to worship Him, to experience the Holy Spirit. 00:02:53.360 --> 00:03:07.680 What was birthed and inspired out of this second Great Awakening was a host of abolitionists to see the end of slavery, to plant the seeds of what would come in the Civil War in 60 or 70 years. 00:03:07.840 --> 00:03:10.400 The American Bible Society came out of this time. 00:03:10.560 --> 00:03:13.360 Mission boards and foreign mission boards came out of this time. 00:03:13.439 --> 00:03:18.000 And what I'm trying to tell you is that Kentucky is a special place of revival. 00:03:21.360 --> 00:03:32.560 See, as we think about this region being somewhere where the seeds of revival have been planted and an outpouring of revival and worship. 00:03:32.719 --> 00:03:36.639 A few years ago, Emily and I actually got the chance to go over to Cane Ridge. 00:03:36.719 --> 00:03:40.319 You can visit the site of the meeting house there. 00:03:40.960 --> 00:03:54.960 And you can go inside and it's it's still there today, and you can visit it and you can take a look at different places, but it wasn't just in that building where this revival happened. 00:03:55.039 --> 00:04:02.080 It poured outside of this meeting house to thousands and thousands and thousands. 00:04:02.400 --> 00:04:05.520 This outpouring of revival, this outpouring of worship. 00:04:05.599 --> 00:04:06.800 Why is this important? 00:04:08.479 --> 00:04:17.199 It's important this outpouring of revival, this outpouring of worship to God, because the enemy, Satan, wants you to worship anything else than the Lord. 00:04:19.439 --> 00:04:27.040 See, you've come in here today, and you've come in today to a house of worship for us to give praise and glory and honor to the Lord. 00:04:27.120 --> 00:04:43.279 And you've stepped into a heritage that is even from the last couple hundred years in this state, in this region, just 50 miles from this place where God has moved powerfully and helped us shift our nation. 00:04:43.360 --> 00:04:51.839 And I wonder today, have you come into the room and the enemy has convinced you to worship something other than the one true God? 00:04:53.120 --> 00:05:06.399 See, the the the way that the Bible describes, the New Testament describes is that if there's anything in our life that, even something that's a good thing, that we make a God thing, a little g God thing, then it becomes a bad thing in our life, and that's called idolatry. 00:05:06.720 --> 00:05:09.040 Well, yeah. 00:05:09.519 --> 00:05:10.879 Something that's become an idol. 00:05:10.959 --> 00:05:19.279 When we think about idols, we think about something that's, you know, something made out of wood or a statue or something that people long, long time ago would worship and bow down to. 00:05:19.360 --> 00:05:27.360 But can I tell you that just a few years ago, I visited in South Korea Buddhist temples where they are worshiping golden statues of Buddha. 00:05:27.759 --> 00:05:29.519 Right now across this earth. 00:05:29.759 --> 00:05:39.120 Idolatry, it's live and well, and not just in the worship of a statue, but worship of anything that the enemy would convince you to put before God. 00:05:39.519 --> 00:05:40.399 Wealth. 00:05:57.199 --> 00:06:10.639 That God is just something that has been over the millennia in a crutch of religion, that we're too sophisticated now, that we're too enlightened, that that we're beyond the need for God. 00:06:11.199 --> 00:06:13.199 But you know that's nothing new. 00:06:13.519 --> 00:06:16.639 Last week we jumped into the story of the prophet of Elijah. 00:06:17.040 --> 00:06:25.839 This man that called man called out by God in a time in Israel that they had experienced 19 consecutive evil kings. 00:06:27.360 --> 00:06:28.480 Nineteen. 00:06:29.759 --> 00:06:38.560 A long time of evil that ultimately led to the split of the southern and northern kingdoms of Judah and Israel. 00:06:38.879 --> 00:06:46.639 And God calls out Elijah to go and to confront and stand up to the evil king Ahab and his wife Jezebel. 00:06:47.120 --> 00:06:50.639 The Bible says the e the most evil of those nineteen. 00:06:51.759 --> 00:07:05.040 And Elijah in a stand before the Lord goes in front of him and as a proclamation says to him that there will be no rain for three and a half years, or no rain for years, unless they turn to God. 00:07:06.000 --> 00:07:07.680 This was catastrophic. 00:07:08.319 --> 00:07:12.720 This was a title, an entire shutdown of their economy. 00:07:13.040 --> 00:07:19.279 An agrarian economy focused in need of farming in an arid area of Israel. 00:07:19.519 --> 00:07:20.800 Rain was essential. 00:07:22.240 --> 00:07:40.000 And so we see that Elijah takes a stand and steps up to this evil king and Jezebel, who had brought in the worship of false Syrian gods into the land of Israel and to God's people. 00:07:40.319 --> 00:08:03.120 See these false gods of Baal or Baal and Asherah, these Syrian gods that people began to worship and to worship these statues and to begin to go to temples, even sacrificing their children to these false gods, engaging with temple prostitutes and all kinds of sin and evil was happening at the time. 00:08:03.360 --> 00:08:16.959 And Elijah stands up with the Lord as a prophet and stands up to this evil king and queen, and then immediately God takes him into this isolated place, the Karif ravine. 00:08:17.600 --> 00:08:27.839 This place called the cutting place, where God molds him and makes him into the person and the man that God wanted him to be and the power of God to work through him. 00:08:27.920 --> 00:08:32.000 And we see multiple miracles happen, and we spoke of this last Sunday. 00:08:32.320 --> 00:08:44.559 Culminating in the first time in the scripture that someone was raised from the dead as Elijah raised the son of a widow who had passed and raised him from the dead. 00:08:44.960 --> 00:08:48.320 An unbelievable show of God's power. 00:08:48.399 --> 00:08:50.240 But it was just the beginning. 00:08:50.879 --> 00:08:55.120 It was just the beginning of what God had planned to do through Elijah. 00:08:55.360 --> 00:09:03.200 Just the beginning of the revival that was to come through his work and through God's hand on him. 00:09:04.559 --> 00:09:22.159 See, we go to the next part of the story as Elijah has a full-on confrontation, showdown battle with the false prophets of these false gods of Asherah and Baal. 00:09:22.320 --> 00:09:23.600 Here's what happened. 00:09:24.080 --> 00:09:27.440 This is in 1 Kings chapter 18, starting in verse 19. 00:09:28.799 --> 00:09:39.600 Elijah says, Summon all of Israel to join me on Mount Carmel, along with 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah, who are supported by Jezebel. 00:09:39.919 --> 00:09:44.240 So Ahab summoned all the people of Israel and the prophets to Mount Carmel. 00:09:44.480 --> 00:09:50.720 Then Elijah stood in front of them and said, How much longer will you waver, hobbling between two opinions? 00:09:50.960 --> 00:09:53.279 If the Lord is God, follow him. 00:09:53.440 --> 00:09:56.559 But if Baal is God, then follow him. 00:09:57.200 --> 00:10:01.279 But the people were completely silent. 00:10:02.799 --> 00:10:11.120 Elijah speaks right to them and says, You need to follow the one true God. 00:10:13.759 --> 00:10:19.919 But if you want to follow these false gods, then follow them and see where that gets you. 00:10:22.879 --> 00:10:25.200 But stop wavering between two. 00:10:26.480 --> 00:10:32.159 You know, this happens in our life as well when we have Jesus plus something else. 00:10:32.480 --> 00:10:36.320 We want to worship God, but also worship wealth. 00:10:37.120 --> 00:10:43.840 We want to worship Jesus, but we also want to worship an addiction that we have. 00:10:44.559 --> 00:10:54.720 We want to worship Jesus plus something else in our life, and we can even take a good thing and put it in the place of God in our life, and it becomes a bad thing. 00:10:56.320 --> 00:10:58.240 That's what idolatry is. 00:11:00.879 --> 00:11:04.639 And so Elijah sets up a showdown. 00:11:05.360 --> 00:11:08.960 He says, Call these prophets to the top of Mount Carmel. 00:11:10.240 --> 00:11:15.360 And what we're going to do is we're going to put your false God to the test and mine. 00:11:16.080 --> 00:11:26.799 I want us to build an altar for a sacrifice and then call down fire from heaven for that sacrifice to be burned up. 00:11:27.200 --> 00:11:30.159 You'll get your chance, false prophets. 00:11:30.399 --> 00:11:33.600 I'll get my chance with the one true God. 00:11:33.919 --> 00:11:40.879 And so what happened was they set up the offering, the false prophets, they went first. 00:11:41.120 --> 00:11:43.840 They started to worship their false idols. 00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:50.159 They began dancing and worshiping and doing these worship dances and all these things that they were doing. 00:11:50.240 --> 00:11:54.320 And they did it on and on and on and on and on for hours. 00:11:54.639 --> 00:11:58.000 And Elijah just stood by, watching. 00:12:06.240 --> 00:12:07.919 For surely he's a God. 00:12:08.159 --> 00:12:11.440 Perhaps he's daydreaming or relieving himself. 00:12:11.600 --> 00:12:13.200 Going to the bathroom. 00:12:13.600 --> 00:12:19.039 Or maybe he's away on a trip or asleep or needs to be awakened. 00:12:19.519 --> 00:12:21.120 Isn't that hilarious? 00:12:33.919 --> 00:12:37.279 These false prophets, they began to worship harder. 00:12:38.639 --> 00:12:39.279 Dancing more. 00:12:39.360 --> 00:12:46.399 They even began to cut themselves and bleed as a sacrifice to this false God. 00:12:46.960 --> 00:12:48.159 But nothing happened. 00:12:50.480 --> 00:12:52.080 Then it was Elijah's turn. 00:12:54.320 --> 00:13:04.559 In verse 33, Elijah said, He piled wood on the altar, cut the bull into pieces, and laid the pieces on the wood. 00:13:04.879 --> 00:13:14.480 Then he said, Fill four jars with water, and pour the water over the offering and wood. 00:13:15.200 --> 00:13:20.240 And after they'd done this, he said, Do the same thing again. 00:13:21.440 --> 00:13:25.759 And when they were finished, he said, Now do it a third time. 00:13:26.879 --> 00:13:34.320 So they did as he said, and the water ran around the altar and even filled the trench. 00:13:35.279 --> 00:13:38.480 Elijah soaked the wood. 00:13:40.399 --> 00:13:45.039 Do you remember the fact that they're in the middle of a drought? 00:14:29.759 --> 00:14:44.799 One of our small groups this week had uh had a time where they were uh had some s'mores and had some fires going this last Tuesday, and I was talking to some of the guys, and some of the wood was wet, and they were trying to light the fire to get some s'mores to be cooked and everything. 00:14:44.960 --> 00:14:48.799 It took forever, and they weren't even able to light some of it because it was wet. 00:14:49.120 --> 00:14:50.799 You've ever been there before. 00:14:52.000 --> 00:15:02.879 I don't know if you've ever had life put a wet blanket over you where all of a sudden you feel soaked too. 00:15:03.519 --> 00:15:05.360 You ever felt like you're drowning? 00:15:06.879 --> 00:15:14.720 You ever gotten to that point where you feel like nothing's going right, you feel like you can't keep your head above water? 00:15:17.360 --> 00:15:23.759 The bills are piling up, the health thing is going on, the relationship with the boyfriend, girlfriend's not going right. 00:15:25.919 --> 00:15:31.679 You feel like life is just covering you over, dousing you. 00:15:32.559 --> 00:15:40.320 Maybe you're in the room today and you've walked in and you don't even feel worthy to be here right now because you feel like your life is saturated in sin. 00:15:41.039 --> 00:15:46.399 Can I tell you that God wants you to be here and he loves you?
