and different journalists that are all looking at who's upset at who, who's in, who's out, who's fighting, what positions and titles are being passed on, who's next in line. 00:01:09.040 --> 00:01:47.519 And we're looking to forge families that are fit for the fight, to come against the enemies and the evil that would try to conquer us and take over and destroy and take, take, take a lot of them. 00:02:12.560 --> 00:02:17.199 The title of my message today is Passing on the Past. 00:02:17.439 --> 00:02:26.400 See, the family that we're looking at has a bloodline from a covenant that God made with the grandfather Abraham. 00:02:27.199 --> 00:02:38.479 This grandfather that was promised by God to be blessed, to be a blessing, to be made in this mighty nation called Israel, the people of God. 00:02:38.800 --> 00:02:55.120 And over and over and over and over again in the Bible, God refers to himself in introduction, and God is referred to as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 00:02:55.439 --> 00:02:59.120 The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 00:02:59.199 --> 00:03:00.479 But there's one problem. 00:03:01.680 --> 00:03:08.240 It was supposed to be the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Esau. 00:03:10.639 --> 00:03:11.919 Not Jacob. 00:03:12.400 --> 00:03:15.919 Just a little participation here for a moment, just a quick show of hands. 00:03:16.080 --> 00:03:25.919 Yep, just about everybody in the room wants to be blessed. 00:03:26.080 --> 00:03:27.599 You come to church and say, hey, you know what? 00:03:27.680 --> 00:03:30.319 I'm coming to church this morning because I want to receive a blessing. 00:03:30.400 --> 00:03:32.159 I want to be blessed in my life. 00:03:32.240 --> 00:03:38.639 But here's what's true: that everybody wants to be blessed, but not everybody wants to do what it takes to get the blessing. 00:03:39.680 --> 00:03:50.000 See, there's a reality that we have to leave behind the baggage of our past to be able to move forward in the blessing that God has for us. 00:03:50.159 --> 00:03:58.719 So put it like this: you've got to leave the old you behind, receive the you that is blessed in the future. 00:03:59.199 --> 00:04:07.919 See, the family that we're talking about today is the family and the children of Isaac and Rebekah. 00:04:08.319 --> 00:04:10.159 Isaac, the son of Abraham. 00:04:10.319 --> 00:04:13.520 And Isaac and Rebekah, they had twin sons. 00:04:14.159 --> 00:04:20.240 These twins, Esau, who his name means red because he had red hair. 00:04:20.560 --> 00:04:24.959 And then Jacob, which means heel grabber or deceiver. 00:04:25.519 --> 00:04:28.959 But Esau was the older of the two that were born. 00:04:29.120 --> 00:04:37.199 Now, I don't know if you've ever known any twins, but I grew up with uh some friends that were a set of twins, and they were obsessed with which one was older, okay? 00:04:37.439 --> 00:04:46.639 Even just about like one minute, because one of them was like one minute older, and he'd always be saying to his brother, respect your elders, listen to your elders. 00:04:46.879 --> 00:04:52.399 And then even though it was like one minute of time, they they they were all about it. 00:04:52.480 --> 00:05:02.480 And here's the thing: the who was the oldest was important even in the Bible and in this story, because the oldest son was the one that would receive the birthright. 00:05:02.639 --> 00:05:04.240 Everybody say birthright. 00:05:04.560 --> 00:05:18.720 See, what the birthright was was that when the inheritance came, when it was time for the inheritance, and the inheritance was being split up, that the one, the oldest son who had the birthright, that he would be the one that would receive a double portion. 00:05:19.519 --> 00:05:23.839 He would see receive a double portion of whatever the inheritance was. 00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:31.040 Not only that, but then as having the birthright as the oldest, he would then become the judge of the family. 00:05:31.759 --> 00:05:36.480 Not only that, but he would receive the blessing. 00:05:37.040 --> 00:05:54.639 And what this was in the Old Testament was literally that the father would place a hand on the son and would transfer the blessing of God over his life for their family to the next generation. 00:05:56.240 --> 00:06:00.959 But there was an issue with the brothers. 00:06:02.079 --> 00:06:07.439 Jacob, the younger son, he wanted to steal the birthright. 00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:16.079 This is kind of how it began in Genesis chapter 25, verse 27. 00:06:16.240 --> 00:06:20.319 The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the open country. 00:06:20.480 --> 00:06:29.600 While Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents, Isaac, who had a taste for wild game, loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob. 00:06:30.319 --> 00:06:37.120 Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished. 00:06:37.360 --> 00:06:41.519 And he said to Jacob, Quick, let me have some of that red stew. 00:06:41.600 --> 00:06:42.319 I'm famished. 00:06:42.399 --> 00:06:44.160 This is why he was also called Edom. 00:06:44.399 --> 00:06:49.600 And Jacob replied, First, sell me your birthright. 00:06:50.399 --> 00:06:52.639 Look, I'm about to die. 00:06:52.959 --> 00:06:57.279 Esau said, What good is the birthright to me? 00:06:57.600 --> 00:07:00.000 But Jacob said, Swear it to me first. 00:07:01.040 --> 00:07:05.519 So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob. 00:07:05.759 --> 00:07:06.639 And verse 34. 00:07:06.879 --> 00:07:10.000 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. 00:07:10.160 --> 00:07:14.000 He ate and drank, and they got up and left. 00:07:14.480 --> 00:07:18.959 So Esau despised his birthright. 00:07:19.279 --> 00:07:21.519 Now we look at a story like this. 00:07:23.360 --> 00:07:32.800 You have Esau who is coming in from hunting, and all he's got on his mind, he just got a one-track mind of like, I've got to have something to eat. 00:07:33.040 --> 00:07:37.360 And he's being completely controlled by this mindset of his desire. 00:07:37.519 --> 00:07:43.519 And he comes into the house and he asks for Jacob to give him some of the stew that he was making. 00:07:43.600 --> 00:07:49.199 And Jacob, the cunning deceiver, conniving schemer, thought, this is my moment. 00:07:49.920 --> 00:07:51.120 This is my moment. 00:07:51.519 --> 00:07:58.000 And he said, Well, sell me the birthright for this bowl of stew. 00:07:58.240 --> 00:08:00.000 And Esau said, Okay. 00:08:01.360 --> 00:08:08.399 And now, thousands of years later, we all look at this story and we all think the same thing. 00:08:08.720 --> 00:08:10.879 That is so dumb. 00:08:12.240 --> 00:08:13.839 That is so dumb. 00:08:14.319 --> 00:08:24.160 You just gave up your entire birthright, a double portion, you gave up all that for a bowl of soup. 00:08:24.879 --> 00:08:26.399 Who does that? 00:08:26.879 --> 00:08:29.279 And the truth is, we all do. 00:08:31.839 --> 00:08:33.600 We all do at times. 00:08:34.399 --> 00:08:49.679 See, the reason why we have dysfunctional families is because at some point somebody chose to choose drugs over their family. 00:08:50.799 --> 00:08:57.440 Someone chose to choose a fling of a affair over their family. 00:08:58.799 --> 00:09:08.080 Somebody chose an unhealthy habit or chose a career of workaholism over their family. 00:09:09.039 --> 00:09:20.879 And I don't know about you, but I think personally in my life and the family that I have, and I think about the addictions and the different brokenness and challenges that are just in my family alone. 00:09:21.039 --> 00:09:29.440 And I think to ourselves, and I think to myself, that all of us at times we're prone to taking the shortcut, aren't we? 00:09:31.120 --> 00:09:35.679 But when we take it, we cut off our future. 00:09:36.639 --> 00:09:41.679 See, Esau gave up his future. 00:09:42.480 --> 00:09:47.440 And in doing so, he despised it, is what the scripture says. 00:09:49.279 --> 00:09:50.399 He despised it. 00:09:51.039 --> 00:09:53.120 The future that he was supposed to have. 00:09:54.559 --> 00:09:55.600 He hated it. 00:09:56.799 --> 00:09:57.919 He destroyed it. 00:09:58.879 --> 00:10:08.080 And for us, we we we don't need to destroy our future by being controlled by our desires. 00:10:08.399 --> 00:10:09.360 Here's the thing. 00:10:10.399 --> 00:10:20.399 We don't need to get trapped or captured by fleeting sin over a fruitful future with the Lord. 00:10:22.879 --> 00:10:30.159 See, Jacob, he wasn't quite finished living up to his name as the deceiver. 00:10:30.879 --> 00:10:34.240 He had another trick up his sleeve. 00:10:35.279 --> 00:10:44.879 He wanted the blessing too, and he was willing to deceive his father and his family in order to get it. 00:10:45.919 --> 00:10:47.519 But he had help. 00:10:48.960 --> 00:10:52.960 He had help from his mom, Rebecca. 00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:59.759 His mom, Rebecca, helped him, not just because she loved him more, is what the scripture said. 00:10:59.840 --> 00:11:01.679 He was a bit of a mama's boy. 00:11:02.399 --> 00:11:23.679 But also because in Rebecca's past, with her husband Isaac, earlier in the story of their family, there had come a time where Isaac actually deceived some people into thinking that Rebecca was not his wife in order to save their skin, the same thing that his grandfather Abraham had done with Sarah at one point in the past. 00:11:23.759 --> 00:11:29.120 And so there was this past of deception in their family. 00:11:31.200 --> 00:11:36.000 There was a past of lying, of trickery. 00:11:36.799 --> 00:11:46.559 And so Jacob and his mother devised a plan that they would deceive. 00:11:47.519 --> 00:12:11.440 Not too long ago, somebody who was in my who was uh in our church and in a group that I was hanging out with said something that struck me so strongly, and I haven't been able to forget what they said, but we were they were talking about the people that you hang out with, your friends, your family, the the environment that you're in, and the statement was said this you will be what you see. 00:12:13.519 --> 00:12:16.399 You will be what you see. 00:12:20.080 --> 00:12:31.679 Here's the thing we have the opportunity to change our examples, to change our circles, change our role models. 00:12:32.639 --> 00:12:38.240 I think about just in my own life and some of the things that just in my own family. 00:12:38.320 --> 00:12:48.399 And I think, Lord, please help me to be able to have some other examples and different examples for the future of my family. 00:12:49.840 --> 00:12:54.159 I think about my grandfather who I never met because he took his own life. 00:12:55.759 --> 00:13:05.600 I think Lord, help me to change that example for the future for my own family. 00:13:07.200 --> 00:13:15.759 See, Jacob and Rebecca, they devised this plan of deceit to trick Isaac. 00:13:15.919 --> 00:13:18.000 At this point, Isaac is an old man. 00:13:18.480 --> 00:13:23.759 His eyesight is failing, he's in a bed and is ailing. 00:13:23.919 --> 00:13:33.840 He can't even see very well, and so they devised this plan to have Jacob to go in to be an imposter of Esau. 00:13:34.639 --> 00:13:35.360 There was a problem. 00:13:35.840 --> 00:13:37.600 Jacob and Esau didn't look alike. 00:13:37.679 --> 00:13:56.080 And Esau was again had red hair, but apparently the Bible said he was very hairy, and so they went out and got a goat and got some goat skin, and they put the goat skin on his arms and on his neck, and then Jacob went to his father's bedside and asked for the blessing, posed as Esau. 00:13:58.639 --> 00:14:01.840 And Isaac placed a hand on a Jacob. 00:14:03.360 --> 00:14:23.759 And he spoke over, and he gave to the younger son only one time transferable blessing, birthright of his family to the younger son. 00:14:25.600 --> 00:14:27.759 And then fireworks ensued. 00:14:29.279 --> 00:14:39.759 In chapter 27, verse 30, after Isaac had finished blessing him, and Jacob had scarcely left his father's presence, his brother Esau came in from hunting. 00:14:40.240 --> 00:14:50.639 He too prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father, and he said to him, Father, please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may uh give me your blessing. 00:14:50.879 --> 00:14:52.320 And verse 32. 00:14:52.720 --> 00:14:56.080 His father Isaac asked him, Who are you? 00:14:57.360 --> 00:14:58.559 I am your son. 00:14:58.879 --> 00:15:01.440 He answered, Your firstborn, Esau. 00:15:02.080 --> 00:15:08.799 And Isaac trembled violently and said, Who was it then that hunted game and brought it to me? 00:15:08.960 --> 00:15:14.240 I ate it just before you came, and I blessed him, and indeed he will be blessed. 00:15:14.720 --> 00:15:25.759 And when Esau heard his father's words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry and said to his father, Bless me, me too, father. 00:15:26.639 --> 00:15:32.320 But he said, Your brother came deceitfully and took your blessing. 00:15:33.120 --> 00:15:39.120 Esau said, Isn't he rightly named Jacob the deceiver? 00:15:40.399 --> 00:15:42.879 This is the second time he has taken advantage of me. 00:15:43.039 --> 00:15:46.159 He took my birthright, and now he's taking my blessing. 00:15:46.720 --> 00:15:51.200 And then he asked, Haven't you observed any blessing from me? 00:15:52.639 --> 00:15:54.399 Which Isaac had not. 00:15:54.720 --> 00:16:04.559 And then Esau walked out of the room with a plot, a desire to kill his brother. 00:16:07.440 --> 00:16:15.440 He walked into this room expecting a blessing, and he walked out of the room with a new enemy. 00:16:17.120 --> 00:16:22.879 You know, in this story, we have both the deceived and the deceiver. 00:16:23.519 --> 00:16:30.080 And what is true about our lives is that we also, too, have an enemy. 00:16:30.320 --> 00:16:41.360 That in John 10, 10, the scripture tells us that this enemy, that the thief, that this enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy us, our enemy, Satan. 00:16:41.840 --> 00:16:46.320 But Jesus says, I have come that you may have life and have it abundantly. 00:16:46.480 --> 00:16:48.960 See, Satan goes by several titles. 00:16:49.759 --> 00:16:51.279 Deceiver is one of them. 00:16:52.080 --> 00:16:56.480 His native tongue is lies, is what the Bible says. 00:16:57.279 --> 00:17:02.240 Lies like just take the money. 00:17:03.440 --> 00:17:07.519 You know, it's just a it's just a little white lie. 00:17:08.799 --> 00:17:10.799 Well, everybody else is doing it. 00:17:12.559 --> 00:17:16.640 Or God just wants you to be happy, not holy. 00:17:20.160 --> 00:17:31.359 See, we have an enemy who wants to come against our families and wants to destroy us, wants to take us down. 00:17:32.880 --> 00:17:46.079 And I think about a room this size, and I know that just in past stories, that there are people in this room that at one point or another have been deceived by somebody else. 00:17:47.200 --> 00:17:50.640 You've been sinned against in the past. 00:17:51.359 --> 00:18:00.880 It was just a few weeks ago that I was having a conversation with someone in our church and had just gone through a serious betrayal. 00:18:01.279 --> 00:18:16.799 Somebody that they trusted betrayed their trust and betrayed them, and we were having a conversation, and as the conversation was going, we were talking about what this person needed to do to try to mend the situation, try to have a conversation to address the betrayal. 00:18:16.880 --> 00:18:32.559 And this conversation ensued between us a few weeks ago where I was telling them, hey, you may talk to this person who's betrayed you, and you may you may never get an apology from them. 00:18:33.440 --> 00:18:38.400 They may never acknowledge the wrongdoing of what they did. 00:18:38.960 --> 00:18:56.880 But then I told him, but for the sake of your future, even though you may not get the apology, you can't for your own sake and for your future's sake walk in unforgiveness. 00:18:58.960 --> 00:19:13.920 See, because when we walk in unforgiveness, what the old adage says is that when we have unforgiveness or bitterness in our heart, it's like drinking deadly poison and expecting the other person to die. 00:19:16.000 --> 00:19:35.440 That even though that we've been hurt, we've been sinned against, because we have freedom in Christ and we have his forgiveness, that then we can, whether or not that person ever asks for our forgiveness, we can choose to forgive them so that we can walk with Jesus and we can be free. 00:19:37.279 --> 00:19:39.920 And sometimes this is very serious. 00:19:40.160 --> 00:19:44.880 And it doesn't mean that there isn't consequences to the sin. 00:19:45.279 --> 00:19:49.920 There isn't consequences to the betrayal or maybe the abuse. 00:20:39.839 --> 00:20:50.400 But in the meantime, you have to then receive the forgiveness of Christ that He's given you and extend it so that you can be healed. 00:20:53.599 --> 00:21:04.480 And I also know in a room this size, there are probably some people that at one point or another you have done something that you are ashamed of. 00:21:05.519 --> 00:21:10.400 Something that you feel guilty that happened and that you did in the past. 00:21:11.440 --> 00:21:19.839 Maybe it was a way that you deceived someone, or you let somebody down, or you were the one that future. 00:21:41.599 --> 00:21:53.759 Last Sunday, when we started this series, we we we talked about a passage in the scripture that says, let's not get tired of doing what is good, but at the right 00:22:00.240 --> 00:22:00.960 Don't be misled. 00:22:01.039 --> 00:22:03.279 This is Galatians 6, starting in verse 7. 00:22:03.359 --> 00:22:04.400 Don't be misled. 00:22:04.799 --> 00:22:07.279 You cannot mock the justice of God. 00:22:07.519 --> 00:22:10.240 You will always harvest what you plant. 00:22:10.640 --> 00:22:17.440 Those who live only to satisfy their sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. 00:22:17.519 --> 00:22:25.119 But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. 00:22:25.359 --> 00:22:29.519 So let's not get tired in doing what is good. 00:22:29.839 --> 00:22:37.440 At just the right time, we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up. 00:22:39.039 --> 00:22:45.039 And then a statement was made if you do the right thing right now at the right time, you will reap a reward. 00:22:47.119 --> 00:23:06.640 And for those that choose to not walk in the spirit, but walk in the sinful nature, truth. 00:23:32.960 --> 00:23:37.359 Jesus wants to fully forgive you today so you can walk into your future. 00:23:39.920 --> 00:23:42.640 Jesus wants to completely blot it out. 00:23:42.880 --> 00:23:44.160 I'll put it to you like this. 00:23:44.319 --> 00:23:57.680 It was uh when we first uh moved to Frankfurt, and I was getting around town, and and uh and what ended up happening was it was kind of a misunderstanding, and I ended up with a minor traffic ticket, okay? 00:24:00.160 --> 00:24:06.880 And this this minor traffic ticket, I knew that this was a misunderstanding, and I'm like, okay, I I've got to figure this out. 00:24:06.960 --> 00:24:20.880 Like, I've got a I'm I got a court date, so I'm like, okay, I'm gonna go to court, and so I went up to the courthouse and I'm standing at the big long line of people, and I've like got my tie on and everything, and it's my time to go in front of the judge. 00:24:21.200 --> 00:24:41.039 And so the judge gets my folder and opens up the case, and he asked me what my testimony was, and so I was telling him my side of the story, and there was some some some legalese back and forth, and he's like, Are you you know wanting to take this further? 00:24:41.200 --> 00:25:00.160 And and and I was just kind of like, I don't really know what's going on, but no, I didn't do this thing, and then he just said, All right, case dismissed, closed the folder, handed it to the person, and I got out of there as fast as I possibly could. 00:25:02.799 --> 00:25:20.960 And in the same way, for your future and for your future family, the things and the mess-ups that are in the past, Jesus looks to you, and not only does he forgive you, but the Bible says that he tosses those sins as far as the east is from the west. 00:25:21.200 --> 00:25:28.400 And so he looks at you and he doesn't just say, Oh, well, oh, oh, okay, well, well, here's some, here's some, here's some of this, and here's some of that. 00:25:28.480 --> 00:25:32.799 He looks at you and he says, You're forgiven, it's dismissed. 00:25:34.319 --> 00:25:42.880 You're forgiven, you can walk freely forward in your life as you walk out the change that God has called you to give. 00:25:43.359 --> 00:25:51.039 The case is dismissed, the baggage is gone, the briefcase is gone, it's dismissed. 00:25:52.960 --> 00:26:05.359 And so do not be deceived like Esau to despise the future that God has for you and the destiny. 00:26:05.599 --> 00:26:12.880 Do not be deceived, and trade your destiny hating what's in the future. 00:26:12.960 --> 00:26:16.319 Can you just just imagine with me for a moment? 00:26:18.799 --> 00:26:48.079 I know there's some of you in the room that there's family dynamics, there's things that have gone on at generations in your family, and you're wondering, God, what if I carry that same baggage on to my kids or my grandkids or a future? 00:26:49.440 --> 00:27:03.680 But what if, what if, what if from right now you begin to write a better story for your future and your future family? 00:27:05.599 --> 00:27:22.000 What if from right now you take the Jesus that the Bible calls the author and the perfecter of our faith, and you allow him with you and walking with him to write a better story for your future? 00:27:22.160 --> 00:27:26.000 Is there anybody in the room who wants to write a better brokenness? 00:27:46.400 --> 00:27:58.240 Or are we allowing God to enter in and to redeem and to write a new story and a new path so that you can walk in forgiveness and freedom with Him?
