00:03:51.039 --> 00:03:54.719 What do you mean that there's a price to pay? 00:03:54.879 --> 00:03:57.439 No, that's not how that's not how this works, right? 00:03:57.680 --> 00:04:07.360 I'm reading the biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was one of the only pastors in war-torn Germany during World War II that defied Hitler. 00:04:07.599 --> 00:04:09.039 And it's a long read. 00:04:09.280 --> 00:04:10.879 I've got lots of thoughts about it. 00:04:11.199 --> 00:04:19.439 But one of his most prominent quotes from his works is when Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die. 00:04:20.319 --> 00:04:23.360 And ultimately Dietrich Bonhoeffer was hanged. 00:04:25.120 --> 00:04:29.759 That he defied Hitler and wanted to follow Jesus. 00:04:31.120 --> 00:04:39.279 So I wonder today for you, as you think about, and maybe you've stepped into the room, maybe for the first time, trying to wonder what is this Jesus thing all about? 00:04:39.839 --> 00:04:52.639 Maybe you've come into a moment where you're desperately wanting to get some success in life, to find some happiness, to find some wealth, to find some harmony. 00:04:52.959 --> 00:05:08.720 And Jesus is gonna speak directly today in our text to what the cost is and what the price is of following him as his disciple, as a pupil, as a learner, as someone that wants to follow him. 00:05:08.879 --> 00:05:11.519 And Jesus is speaking to this large crowd. 00:05:11.759 --> 00:05:22.399 And he addresses this large crowd, but he's only speaking to a few of them in the crowd, and the ones that he's speaking to are the ones who actually want to be his disciple and the ones that want to have eternal life. 00:05:23.040 --> 00:05:28.879 And he gives some analogies of what the cost of being a disciple truly is. 00:05:29.199 --> 00:05:30.480 Y'all ready for this? 00:05:30.879 --> 00:05:36.560 Just a disclaimer: this sermon this morning is not the five happy hops to heaven today, okay? 00:05:36.959 --> 00:05:43.600 We're gonna be looking at Jesus and his teachings and some of the things that he said that uh not on the bumper sticker, not on the Christian t-shirt. 00:05:43.759 --> 00:05:45.519 These are the words of Jesus. 00:05:45.759 --> 00:05:49.279 This is Luke chapter 14, starting in verse 25. 00:05:49.519 --> 00:05:51.680 A large crowd was following Jesus. 00:05:51.839 --> 00:05:58.399 And he turned around and said to them, If you want to be my disciple, you must, by comparison, hate everyone else. 00:05:58.720 --> 00:06:04.240 Your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, even your own life. 00:06:04.959 --> 00:06:07.360 Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple. 00:06:07.600 --> 00:06:14.879 And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple. 00:06:15.519 --> 00:06:19.199 Now, this is about the worst sales pitch of all time. 00:06:20.879 --> 00:06:24.959 This, if Jesus was a salesman, he needs some coaching, he needs some help. 00:06:25.199 --> 00:06:30.959 As you've never had a salesman say, hey, if you want to get this, then your life's gonna be really tough. 00:06:31.120 --> 00:06:35.439 It's gonna break all the time, it's gonna be tough on some of your relationships. 00:06:35.600 --> 00:06:37.360 No salesman says that. 00:06:37.600 --> 00:06:39.040 That's not their pitch. 00:06:39.279 --> 00:06:42.480 But maybe that's because Jesus isn't a salesman, he's a savior. 00:06:43.439 --> 00:06:52.000 Who's guiding us through this life and not lying to us and giving us a bill of goods or a bait and switch, but instead he's telling us the truth. 00:06:52.480 --> 00:06:54.480 And he's telling you the truth. 00:06:55.279 --> 00:07:03.040 See, Jesus says that you should, by comparison for your love for God, that you should, it should look like that you hate others. 00:07:03.439 --> 00:07:13.920 And you know that word hate, you know, I can say, you know, I hate to eat apples with the peel on them because I do get the peel off of those apples, okay? 00:07:14.160 --> 00:07:15.360 I hate that. 00:07:16.079 --> 00:07:20.160 Peel that apple before you put it into that caramel, okay? 00:07:20.800 --> 00:07:25.120 Uh and I also could say, you know, well, I hate my coworker. 00:07:25.360 --> 00:07:27.439 That's not exactly the same thing, right? 00:07:27.759 --> 00:07:34.720 Jesus is using this language, language that he uses at other times too, that like in Luke chapter 16, he says, No one can serve two masters. 00:07:34.879 --> 00:07:38.959 Either you hate one and you love the other, you'll be devoted to one and despise the other. 00:07:39.120 --> 00:07:41.439 You cannot serve both God and money. 00:07:42.879 --> 00:07:56.160 And then in Luke 18, he says, indeed, it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, big camel, big humps, through a small eye of a needle, than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. 00:07:56.720 --> 00:08:01.120 And what is Jesus doing by saying all of these things? 00:08:01.439 --> 00:08:06.480 My wife and I, we traveled to Colorado a few weeks back to go visit some friends, and we had a great time. 00:08:06.560 --> 00:08:09.600 We went up to the top of Mount Evans and looked all over the Rockies. 00:08:09.680 --> 00:08:15.040 And one of the things that they have out there in Colorado is uh is uh panning for gold. 00:08:15.360 --> 00:08:28.879 And basically you get down, you get this this great, this sieve thing, and maybe you've done this before at Gatlinburg, like I have, where they have those little fake gems and jewels in there, and you're in the water trough, and it's like, hey, you know? 00:08:29.120 --> 00:08:37.840 And the whole purpose of it is that you have this have this sift, and you're sifting out all the other sediment and all the other things, and what's left is the gold. 00:08:37.919 --> 00:08:41.200 And Jesus, with these statements, is sifting for gold. 00:08:42.000 --> 00:08:47.919 He's sifting to say, who in this crowd really actually wants to follow me? 00:08:48.559 --> 00:08:52.639 Who in this crowd actually wants to be my disciple? 00:08:52.960 --> 00:09:01.759 Who in this crowd actually wants to worship me and move into eternal life one day? 00:09:02.080 --> 00:09:11.200 See, Jesus, with his statements that we've just begun, he speaks to two of the most prominent idols in our life. 00:09:11.440 --> 00:09:14.480 Things, an idol is something that we put before God. 00:09:14.559 --> 00:09:17.919 And God commands us in the Old Testament we should have no other gods before him. 00:09:18.080 --> 00:09:19.759 We should not make these idols to ourselves. 00:09:19.840 --> 00:09:25.679 And in 2024, it's still possible for you to have an idol, something that you worship more than you worship God. 00:09:25.840 --> 00:09:30.799 And he says, one of those things is that you need to not worship and you need to die to family. 00:09:31.600 --> 00:09:34.720 And the other thing is that you have to die to yourself. 00:09:35.039 --> 00:09:49.279 See, here's the context around that for the people that he's speaking to, because it it Jesus is speaking to this crowd of people in a very family-centric and and and and very family tribe-oriented society. 00:09:49.840 --> 00:09:55.279 You live with your family, probably multiple generations, all in one place, one home. 00:09:55.440 --> 00:10:02.080 Your parents have a business, you grow up, you take over that business, and then the next son takes over the business, and on and on and on. 00:10:02.159 --> 00:10:06.559 And you're in this very family-centric, uh, centric place. 00:10:06.720 --> 00:10:14.799 And so Jesus is speaking directly to them about this idol of following your family more than following God. 00:10:16.159 --> 00:10:21.200 He's also speaking to this idol of idolizing our marriages. 00:10:21.360 --> 00:10:23.759 Newsflash, Jesus wasn't married. 00:10:24.159 --> 00:10:27.279 Newsflash, the apostle Paul wasn't married. 00:10:28.799 --> 00:10:37.519 And so we can put our, we can put on our spouse expectations that we should have of God and they're going to fail every single time. 00:10:41.519 --> 00:10:51.840 And then Jesus speaks to our own self-fulfillment by asking us to die to ourselves. 00:10:53.039 --> 00:11:03.279 See, so oftentimes we spend life trying to fulfill ourselves by things that will never truly fulfill us. 00:11:03.519 --> 00:11:18.159 That job, the success, our family's approval, social media following, drugs, alcohol, the next best religious experience or church that's going to feed my needs. 00:11:18.480 --> 00:11:26.639 And what you end up having is a people who are constantly searching for fulfillment but never fulfilled. 00:11:27.919 --> 00:11:31.519 A life filled of searching for this fulfillment. 00:11:31.600 --> 00:11:38.000 And what Jesus is speaking to is that we have to get our priorities in order. 00:11:39.279 --> 00:11:50.399 That over our families, over our earthly relationships, over our own desires of self-fulfillment, that we would instead follow Jesus. 00:11:50.879 --> 00:11:53.039 The priorities of what your home looks like. 00:11:54.960 --> 00:12:04.320 Husbands and wives loving one another, loving their kids, but having a home that the kids are not running the roost in the top priority. 00:12:06.320 --> 00:12:13.279 Because if your children are not in the right place of priority in your family, then you won't stay a family for very long. 00:12:16.159 --> 00:12:23.360 If you're caring more about your child's sports development than their spiritual development, that's not good. 00:12:25.279 --> 00:12:28.080 We have to have our priorities in order. 00:12:28.240 --> 00:12:33.519 And here's the thing as even as I'm saying these things right now, I'm like squirming inside. 00:12:34.399 --> 00:12:35.440 And I don't know about you. 00:12:35.519 --> 00:12:42.480 If some of the things that Jesus just said there just kind of makes you shift in your seat and squirm a little bit. 00:12:42.559 --> 00:12:47.759 And the reason why it is, is because he's calling us to make him first and to worship him. 00:12:48.639 --> 00:12:56.960 Not to worship our families, not to worship our careers, not to worship our success, not to worship our children, but to worship the one true King. 00:12:57.440 --> 00:13:05.200 And that this is a this is a daily act of us dying to ourselves so that we might be disciples of Jesus. 00:13:05.279 --> 00:13:12.720 And what that causes us and should make us do is that it should make us be dying to be a disciple all the time. 00:13:14.879 --> 00:13:23.919 That we are constantly in a mode of having to die to ourselves and our own ambitions as we follow Jesus and his great plan for our lives. 00:13:24.000 --> 00:13:28.799 You know, here's the thing though, that there's so many people out there now that would just say, well, you know what? 00:13:42.159 --> 00:13:43.919 What about these teachings? 00:13:44.639 --> 00:13:46.720 You think Jesus is a great teacher? 00:13:47.039 --> 00:13:50.320 What about him telling you to pick up and carry your cross? 00:13:50.639 --> 00:13:52.960 Are those the teachings that you're talking about? 00:13:53.120 --> 00:13:54.000 No, you're probably not. 00:13:54.080 --> 00:13:56.879 And then they say, well, is that really what Jesus was saying? 00:13:57.039 --> 00:14:01.039 Which is the same question that Satan asked Adam and Eve in the garden. 00:14:02.240 --> 00:14:05.039 Is that the is that did God really say that? 00:14:05.440 --> 00:14:07.519 Did he really say that you were gonna die? 00:14:07.679 --> 00:14:13.200 Here's the thing knowing about Jesus doesn't mean that you know Jesus. 00:14:14.000 --> 00:14:14.320 Amen. 00:14:15.600 --> 00:14:19.919 The scripture tells us that the demons know his name and they even tremble. 00:14:20.720 --> 00:14:25.919 So just because you know the name of Jesus doesn't mean that you are his disciple. 00:14:26.159 --> 00:14:27.440 I'll put it to you like this. 00:14:27.679 --> 00:14:35.440 My parents who live in Pennsylvania now for a little while until they retire, they've been there for a number of years and they've been leading a small group in their house, out of their home through their church. 00:14:35.679 --> 00:14:40.960 There's a young lady last year who came to Christ, became a believer. 00:14:41.600 --> 00:14:45.519 Her family is all from India in a different religion. 00:14:45.759 --> 00:14:49.519 And last year she made a decision for her to follow Jesus and be baptized. 00:14:49.600 --> 00:14:53.440 And when she was baptized, all of her family cut off communication to her. 00:14:56.159 --> 00:15:08.399 This verse that we just heard Jesus teach us and tell us, just because you don't have a family that would cut you off doesn't mean that everybody around the globe doesn't have that same situation. 00:15:09.440 --> 00:15:12.799 That Jesus has to say, who's your allegiance to? 00:15:58.000 --> 00:16:04.480 Jesus gives two more stories to illustrate this point in verse 28. 00:16:05.200 --> 00:16:08.399 He says, But don't begin until you count the cost. 00:16:09.039 --> 00:16:15.759 For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there's enough money to finish it? 00:16:16.000 --> 00:16:21.200 Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of money, and then everyone will laugh at you. 00:16:21.440 --> 00:16:22.720 Which is true. 00:16:23.200 --> 00:16:27.120 And they'll say, There's a person who started that building and couldn't afford to finish it. 00:16:27.360 --> 00:16:28.480 Verse 31. 00:16:29.039 --> 00:16:39.360 And what king would go to war against another king without first sitting down with his counselors to discuss whether his army of 10,000 could defeat the 20,000 soldiers marching against him?
