those of you that aren't familiar with the way golf scrambles work, it's kind of fun because you get to basically be in a team. 00:03:10.719 --> 00:03:19.759 So there's four of you, and you all hit your shot, and then you take the best shot, and everybody gets to put their ball there and hit from that shot. 00:03:19.840 --> 00:03:27.360 So it's really a lot of fun, and you kind of repeat that like it is because when I play golf by myself, you know, the the little white ball, it's just sitting there on the ground, it is not moving, and I have in my mind where it is supposed to go, and then ahead and open them up there. 00:05:28.959 --> 00:05:42.959 And we're gonna learn from this little story a lot of things, but one of those things is that meeting a need and filling a need is not just for the especially trained or skilled the professionals, it's for all of us. 00:05:43.199 --> 00:05:47.360 Now, you're probably familiar with this story, even if you haven't been in church a lot. 00:05:47.519 --> 00:05:51.920 If you went with a little kid, there's a good chance you heard this because it's a great story, all right? 00:05:52.000 --> 00:06:05.199 There's basically two miracles, and they're kind of wrapped around this heroic, jaw-dropping story of four guys that make like special um forces-level tactical decisions to get this thing accomplished. 00:06:05.360 --> 00:06:07.680 So it was like a Sunday school teacher's dream, right? 00:06:07.759 --> 00:06:15.439 Because what better lesson to teach rowdy fourth grade boys than these four dudes who go up, bust a hole in the roof, and get their friend to Jesus. 00:06:15.680 --> 00:06:26.720 There are several things that we'll observe and learn, but one thing is this that the friends saw a need and they met a need, and the next thing that happened was literally a miracle. 00:06:26.959 --> 00:06:28.639 Mark chapter 2, verses 1 to 12. 00:06:28.720 --> 00:06:30.639 I'm gonna read this from the message translation. 00:06:30.800 --> 00:06:36.720 It says this after a few days, Jesus returned to Capernaum, and word got around that he was back home. 00:06:36.879 --> 00:06:41.360 So a crowd gathered, they jammed the entrance so no one could get in or out. 00:06:41.519 --> 00:06:42.800 He was teaching the word. 00:06:43.199 --> 00:06:46.079 They brought a paraplegic to him, carried by four men. 00:06:46.240 --> 00:06:54.319 When they weren't able to get in because of the crowd, they went up and removed part of the roof and they lowered the paraplegic on his stretcher. 00:06:54.800 --> 00:07:01.839 Impressed by their bold belief, Jesus said to the paraplegic, Son, I forgive your sins. 00:07:02.079 --> 00:07:06.720 Well, some religion scholars were sitting there and they started whispering among themselves, He can't talk that way. 00:07:06.879 --> 00:07:07.680 That's blasphemy. 00:07:07.759 --> 00:07:09.839 God and only God can forgive sins. 00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:16.160 Well, Jesus, he knew right away what they were thinking, and he said, Why are you so skeptical? 00:07:16.399 --> 00:07:25.600 Which is simpler to say to the paraplegic paraplegic, I forgive your sins, or say, Get up, take your stretcher, and start walking. 00:07:25.920 --> 00:07:31.839 Well, just so we are clear that I'm the son of man and authorized to do either or both. 00:07:32.079 --> 00:07:37.839 He looked now at the paraplegic, get up, pick up your stretcher, and go home. 00:07:38.160 --> 00:07:39.680 And the man did it. 00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:42.959 He got up, grabbed his stretcher, and walked out. 00:07:43.040 --> 00:07:52.560 With everyone there watching him, they rubbed their eyes, stunned, and then praised God, saying, We've never seen anything like this. 00:07:52.959 --> 00:08:00.720 So to recap, we've got a group of four men that brought a paraplegic man to Jesus and they couldn't get in the building, right? 00:08:00.800 --> 00:08:01.920 So they improvise. 00:08:02.160 --> 00:08:06.560 Now, obviously, I don't know these guys, but I'd like to meet them in heaven, heaven someday. 00:08:06.720 --> 00:08:10.480 I mean, they are tenacious and they are creative and a little bit redneck, right? 00:08:10.560 --> 00:08:13.920 They just kind of rednecked their way through that process, figured out how to do it. 00:08:14.079 --> 00:08:21.600 Instead of waiting for like the talk to be over and the crowd to disperse and then getting their friend to Jesus that they were urgent and they went and got after it. 00:08:21.680 --> 00:08:23.839 These are the kind of guys that you want on your team, right? 00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:26.480 The kind of guys you want to hire and have on your project. 00:08:26.639 --> 00:08:31.759 They worked and acted outside the box, resulting in something extraordinary. 00:08:32.000 --> 00:08:33.759 Now hold that thought for a second. 00:08:34.000 --> 00:08:41.200 So, as we've established, I work at a church and I'm in some meetings where we have to solve problems from time to time, as you can imagine. 00:08:41.440 --> 00:08:45.519 And so, you know, I can just see how this meeting went, like after the event, right? 00:08:45.600 --> 00:08:55.279 Like somebody had to circle up and go, all right, now over at Simon's house, Jesus was teaching, and some guys showed up and they wanted to get the friend of Jesus instead of just waiting until the talk was over. 00:08:55.440 --> 00:08:59.679 They went on the roof and then they busted a hole in the roof, and then they interrupted the talk. 00:08:59.840 --> 00:09:02.720 And I mean it was a little bit frustrating, but Jesus just stopped the talk. 00:09:02.799 --> 00:09:03.759 He forgives the guy's sins. 00:09:03.919 --> 00:09:06.879 Next thing you know, he's bouncing around because he's been healed and the place is going crazy. 00:09:06.960 --> 00:09:19.279 It was amazing, but we've got to get a call into the insurance company and get a roofing contractor out there, and that's just probably what had to happen at some point, even after the miracle was over, and that happens in the church. 00:09:19.360 --> 00:09:28.000 I've been there, the rains come and the roof leaks, or the students are meeting and they bust holes in the drywall, or we've had the one where someone's like stealing money out of the offering bucket. 00:09:28.080 --> 00:09:33.360 Like you just kind of have to solve problems when you are gathering around groups of people. 00:09:33.759 --> 00:09:35.600 Back to the thought we were holding, all right? 00:09:35.759 --> 00:09:36.639 Something extraordinary. 00:09:36.799 --> 00:09:38.799 Mark chapter 2, verse 5, it says this. 00:09:39.039 --> 00:09:45.840 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, Son, your sins are forgiven. 00:09:46.159 --> 00:09:50.240 That's kind of an interesting thing when the guy sitting in front of Jesus is paralyzed. 00:09:50.399 --> 00:09:51.279 So let's talk about it. 00:09:51.440 --> 00:09:57.039 First century Jewish assumptions would be that this dude or his parents were like bad people. 00:09:57.519 --> 00:10:13.759 Like the common belief was if something like this happened, you had done a series of bad things and God was punishing you, or your parents had done one or a series of bad things, and so your lot in life was just kind of tied to the need for God to punish you. 00:10:14.240 --> 00:10:21.200 So Jesus stating that he forgives this guy's sins confronts those faulty assumptions. 00:10:21.360 --> 00:10:27.200 And it also implies that Jesus is God or God like, and the religious leaders couldn't fathom it, they get mad. 00:10:27.519 --> 00:10:33.679 So the fact that Jesus can forgive this man's sin is actually an entire sermon for another day. 00:10:33.759 --> 00:10:36.960 But for right now, let's keep our focus on the friends. 00:10:37.440 --> 00:10:51.200 The guys who were less concerned about what kind of box they needed to keep Jesus in, and more concerned about seeing the need and filling it through the power of Jesus. 00:10:51.919 --> 00:11:00.320 You see, when I read this story earlier, I read it from the message, and Eugene Peterson, the translator of that message, he calls the friend's faith bold belief. 00:11:00.639 --> 00:11:03.840 You see, the men in the story saw that need and they filled it. 00:11:04.320 --> 00:11:08.960 Their friend needed to get to Jesus, and so they figured it out. 00:11:09.200 --> 00:11:20.879 But isn't it amazing that the man's sins were forgiven and his body was healed because of the faith of his friends, the guys up on the roof? 00:11:21.360 --> 00:11:29.519 See, our focus is on seeing a need and feeling the need, but let's not miss the point that what motivates our actions also matters. 00:11:29.679 --> 00:11:48.000 You see, it's one thing to do good things for the sake of doing good things for others, but it went, but when it is the overflow of our faith in Jesus, our belief that Jesus can change the circumstances of those we're serving and can change them, it blows the doors off what's possible. 00:11:48.399 --> 00:11:49.519 I'm not pointing this out. 00:11:49.600 --> 00:11:55.600 This is not a mathematical formula or a science-backed theory or a guarantee of any outcome. 00:11:55.679 --> 00:12:05.200 I'm simply recognizing that the text teaches us that the faith of the friends was involved in the miraculous event. 00:12:05.759 --> 00:12:06.639 It mattered. 00:12:07.120 --> 00:12:19.519 You see, there's a danger in seeing a need and filling it for the sake of doing this because, well, the guy at church talked about it on Sunday, or it's printed on the church brochure, or it's on a website somewhere. 00:12:19.600 --> 00:12:23.679 You see good deeds get disconnected from a good God. 00:12:23.919 --> 00:12:27.360 They have their place, but they lack power. 00:12:27.759 --> 00:12:31.759 You see, in all our best efforts, we can't change a life. 00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:33.679 Only Jesus can do this. 00:12:34.080 --> 00:12:35.919 If you're like me, you've tried, right? 00:12:36.159 --> 00:12:43.039 You've tried to change your kids, or you've tried to change her, or him, or them, and it doesn't work. 00:12:43.120 --> 00:12:43.919 It gets messy. 00:12:44.080 --> 00:12:50.399 Here's the truth Jesus has the power to forgive sins and save souls and change people. 00:12:50.960 --> 00:12:59.679 So we see a need and meet a need, not out of altruistic Western cultural congeniality built on platitudes and well-wishes. 00:12:59.919 --> 00:13:03.919 We meet needs 00:13:19.679 The problem is sin, and our sin, our rebellion against God's best, his plans and wishes, it puts us at odds with God. 00:13:20.320 --> 00:13:23.679 We are broken and we are lost and without hope. 00:13:23.840 --> 00:13:25.200 We are wandering in darkness. 00:13:25.360 --> 00:13:40.879 And in loving response to our condition, Jesus came to earth, he took on a body, he endured this life, including a brutal death on the cross, to receive the punishment that we deserve for our rebellion against a perfect God. 00:13:41.360 --> 00:13:44.320 He saw our need and he met that need. 00:14:28.799 Now, I'm not necessarily a sign person, but while I was preparing and kind of thinking and praying and studying for this message, I took a break and I just decided to walk down the sidewalk at our church. 00:14:28.879 --> 00:14:42.159 And I get to the end of the sidewalk, and it was the other end of the building where students had been uh hanging out a couple nights before, and some of them um had sidewalk chalk, and they were just out in front of the building riding sidewalk chalk, wrote some really cool things. 00:14:42.399 --> 00:14:49.039 And all of a sudden, in that sidewalk chalk art, I saw this verse, 1 John chapter 4, verse 19. 00:14:49.279 --> 00:14:56.399 And 1 John chapter 4, 19 says this we love because he loved us first. 00:14:56.799 --> 00:14:58.799 We love because he first loved us. 00:14:58.960 --> 00:15:02.879 Now, if you're a signed person, you're really leaning in right now, right? 00:15:02.960 --> 00:15:04.960 Because here I am, I'm preparing for this message. 00:15:05.039 --> 00:15:11.279 And literally, the best verse in all of the Bible just pops out of the woodwork written there on the ground. 00:15:11.440 --> 00:15:15.840 Now, I'm still not necessarily a signed person, but the kids are right. 00:15:16.159 --> 00:15:18.320 We love because he first loved us. 00:15:18.480 --> 00:15:24.879 Later in the Bible, Romans chapter 5, verse 8, it says this, but God demonstrates his own love for us in this. 00:15:25.279 --> 00:15:30.559 While we were sinners, Christ died for us. 00:15:31.039 --> 00:15:39.440 It's in the filling of needs that we see around us that we get to pass along the love that God has for us in practical and tangible ways. 00:15:39.840 --> 00:15:42.240 I want to look at one more picture from Jesus' life. 00:15:42.399 --> 00:15:56.720 You see, it's one thing for a group of like ordinary guys to kind of see and need and fill it, but given all that we've said to be true about Jesus, I want us to see how he demonstrated on a much smaller yet very profound scale. 00:15:56.879 --> 00:15:58.960 This time we'll look in John chapter 13. 00:15:59.039 --> 00:16:02.000 Again, if you have your Bibles, you want to turn over there to John 13. 00:16:02.159 --> 00:16:04.639 It's another pretty well-known story from Scripture. 00:16:04.879 --> 00:16:07.360 And Jesus is nearing the end of his ministry. 00:16:07.519 --> 00:16:16.240 The guys that have been following him most closely don't necessarily realize that, but he wants to get them together for a meal and kind of pour some things into them. 00:16:16.399 --> 00:16:20.480 And so at this meal, he sees a need and he fills it. 00:16:20.720 --> 00:16:30.080 John chapter 13, verses 3 to 5 say this Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God. 00:16:30.320 --> 00:16:34.720 So he got up from the meal, he took off his outer clothing, he wrapped a towel around his waist. 00:16:34.879 --> 00:16:41.600 After that he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 00:16:41.840 --> 00:17:01.279 Now, somehow, this meal had been planned in advance and everything was taken care of, and it would have been customary for someone to take care of washing those the feet of those that were coming in, because back then stinky feet were a big problem at a meal because they'd been out on the streets all day, so the dirt and the dust and sweat would be on their feet. 00:17:01.440 --> 00:17:09.680 And the way that you ate that meal would have been reclined on one side with your feet kind of on down the line, so right behind the back of the person eating next to you. 00:17:09.920 --> 00:17:14.720 So a big problem would have been the smell of stinky feet kind of wasping over the table. 00:17:14.960 --> 00:17:20.640 But a bigger problem was this none of the guys realized that someone needed to take care of that. 00:17:20.799 --> 00:17:33.039 They had watched Jesus for the last three years spend time reaching out and taking care of the needs of people around him, and they just overlooked it, trying to elbow the best position they could at the table. 00:17:33.680 --> 00:17:40.160 So Jesus, he gets up and he takes care of this problem, and he begins to wash their feet. 00:17:40.640 --> 00:17:44.160 And they felt pretty awkward because they realized it's something they probably should have done. 00:17:44.240 --> 00:17:48.000 As a matter of fact, Peter, one of the followers of Jesus that was closest to him, gets into an argument. 00:17:48.079 --> 00:17:49.440 He's like, Jesus, don't wash my feet. 00:17:49.519 --> 00:17:50.400 Like, this is embarrassing. 00:17:50.480 --> 00:17:51.440 I should be washing your feet. 00:17:51.599 --> 00:17:53.200 He says, No, no, this is what needs to happen. 00:17:53.279 --> 00:17:56.160 So resolves that uh argument that kicks up. 00:17:56.240 --> 00:18:01.440 Jesus returns to the table and he shares a lesson for his followers, and he shares a lesson for us. 00:18:01.519 --> 00:18:04.400 Here's what it says John chapter 13,
