get into my message today, uh the this message was chosen weeks ago, weeks ago, and the title of my message weeks ago, and the the theme of the message today of the blood, sweat, and the tears is the Inside. 00:04:58.639 --> 00:05:12.240 And as we think about our church and a city that has poured out this week blood, sweat, and tears, we're jumping into this holy week, and it's been heavy. 00:05:12.480 --> 00:05:24.560 I also want to tell you guys this is also very personal to me, but a very good friend of mine who's been a friend and mentor for 15 years, I got word on Sunday night that he uh unexpectedly passed away. 00:05:24.879 --> 00:05:28.319 Pastor Tim Jones, who has been a mentor of mine. 00:05:28.399 --> 00:05:35.439 I literally have listened to his prayers that he has we prayed together and he sent me every day for the last six months. 00:05:35.600 --> 00:05:37.920 He's made an incredible impact on my life. 00:05:38.160 --> 00:05:41.360 And he went to be with Jesus last weekend. 00:05:41.759 --> 00:05:48.480 The most amazing way he uh passed away in his prayer chair at 72. 00:05:48.800 --> 00:05:51.439 I think he's 72, 73 maybe. 00:05:51.920 --> 00:06:00.399 And uh after the service today, Emily and I are actually heading to his funeral after the 11 o'clock. 00:06:00.639 --> 00:06:22.800 So when I think when I talk about the heaviness and the tears that have poured out for this week, I'm thankful that we have a Savior who knew what it was to pour out his blood, his sweat, his tears, to walk and to serve in exhaustion, not just exhaustion, but to be crushed. 00:06:24.399 --> 00:07:17.759 And as we kick off this holy week, in light of everything that's happening in our city, I wonder if, from a spiritual standpoint, what we need as a people and as a community is not just relief, but renewal, a changing, a turning, a way that Jesus showed us a weeping, not just of suffering, and not just being just being satisfied or settled, just being close or near to the things of God, but actually being changed by Him. 00:07:19.920 --> 00:07:53.360 See, as we talk about this moment in the Holy Week, starting with Palm Sunday, which is today, Jesus gives some interesting words that we're gonna look at, and he talks about his coming, and he's speaking to a people that are near to the temple, they're near to the scriptures, they're near to the miracles, but they're far away from the Messiah. 00:07:56.399 --> 00:08:05.519 And there's a danger that we can be close to the things of God, but not actually washed and cleansed by God. 00:08:08.319 --> crave peace, but we resist the purity that brings it. 00:08:35.759 --> 00:08:43.759 We want the joy of the resurrection without the renewal of the surrender and the tears. 00:08:44.960 --> 00:08:54.399 So I wonder, and I ask this question of us, is it possible to feel spiritual but not actually be transformed? 00:08:57.440 --> 00:09:04.879 Is it possible to mistake feeling bad and conviction with actually being cleansed? 00:09:07.440 --> 00:09:13.759 Is it possible to have deep emotions but still walk away unchanged? 00:09:14.720 --> 00:09:19.759 That's what we're gonna look at at this picture of the beginning of Holy Week, the beginning of Palm Sunday. 00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:41.279 So we ended last Sunday with Jesus' arrest, and we're gonna flash back to the beginning of the week, to the Sunday before the resurrection, a full week, five days ahead of the crucifixion, as Jesus is entering into Jerusalem. 00:09:41.519 --> 00:09:56.960 And there are people that are that are praising and they're waving palm branches and they're praising Jesus as he rides into Jerusalem, and and there's all this hope among everyone, and people are smiling, and Jesus is crying. 00:10:00.960 --> 00:10:09.759 I'm gonna give some parts of the story of Easter that doesn't get a whole lot of airtime today. 00:10:10.559 --> 00:10:24.639 But as I talk about this triumphal entry, and that Jesus is actually viewing it as a tragedy, I want us to take a look at the story and the words of Christ here. 00:10:25.279 --> 00:10:27.679 In Luke chapter 19, verse 37. 00:10:29.440 --> 00:10:36.159 Jesus is making this entry into Jerusalem, about to begin this holy week. 00:10:36.399 --> 00:10:41.120 And in verse 37, we see that he reached the place where the road started down, the Mount of Olives. 00:10:41.200 --> 00:10:47.279 And all of his followers began to shout and to sing and walked along, praising God for all the wonderful miracles that they had seen. 00:10:47.440 --> 00:10:51.919 Blessed blessings on the king who comes in the name of the Lord. 00:10:52.159 --> 00:10:55.200 Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heaven. 00:10:55.360 --> 00:10:59.519 But some of the Pharisees among the crowd said, Teacher, rebuke your followers for saying these things. 00:10:59.600 --> 00:11:05.039 And he replied, If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers. 00:11:05.679 --> 00:11:07.360 And then verse 41. 00:11:08.000 --> 00:11:13.440 But as he came closer to Jerusalem, he saw the city ahead, and he began to what? 00:11:13.919 --> 00:11:14.559 Weep. 00:11:15.039 --> 00:11:16.320 Verse 42. 00:11:16.639 --> 00:11:22.879 How I wish today that you of all people would understand the way to peace. 00:11:23.120 --> 00:11:27.519 But now it's too late, and peace is hidden from your eyes. 00:11:27.840 --> 00:11:35.279 Before long your enemies will build ramparts against your walls and encircle you and close in on you from every side. 00:11:35.519 --> 00:11:39.200 They will crush you into the ground and your children with you. 00:11:39.840 --> 00:11:49.200 Your enemies will not leave a single stone in place because you did not recognize it when God visited you. 00:11:51.919 --> 00:11:53.519 It's a celebration. 00:11:54.480 --> 00:11:55.919 People are cheering. 00:11:56.559 --> 00:11:58.960 And Jesus is crying. 00:11:59.519 --> 00:12:11.039 See, because they what they wanted and what they were expecting was to have a king come carrying a sword, and instead they have a savior that came carrying a cross. 00:12:21.200 --> 00:12:26.000 And what felt like a triumph was actually a tragedy. 00:12:26.879 --> 00:12:43.120 And Jesus is seeing what truly is happening, and what the heart behind the people that are at that point waving and worshiping, and there's more than meets the eye. 00:12:50.159 --> 00:12:58.639 See, Jesus is telling them about a coming judgment that's going to come against Jerusalem. 00:12:58.960 --> 00:13:11.120 His words as he's telling them that no stone will be left on the other and that their enemies are going to come against them and tear down their walls. 00:13:11.440 --> 00:13:17.840 Jesus isn't speaking in exaggeration or poetically, he's speaking prophetically. 00:13:19.279 --> 00:13:37.440 Because in about four decades' time, in 70 AD, the Emperor Nero is going to send the Roman army to siege against Jerusalem to stamp out the rebellion and the uprising of the Jews. 00:13:37.519 --> 00:13:41.039 And what ends up happening is that Jerusalem is laid waste. 00:13:41.840 --> 00:13:49.600 The walls are torn down, the temple where all the religious activity is happening, torn down. 00:13:50.960 --> 00:14:10.240 And those that rejected Jesus at his coming, Jesus is prophetically telling them and seeing the fact that they have rejected him, and he's looking into the future, and he's giving them what's not meeting the eye, but what's hidden. 00:14:12.799 --> 00:14:21.600 Josephus, the Jewish historian, said that during that siege, nearly a million Jewish people were killed. 00:14:24.399 --> 00:14:37.840 Jesus is speaking about the fact that all these people who are there and they're welcoming him into the town, they look religious, but they're lacking renewal. 00:14:40.080 --> 00:14:52.879 Because this is the same crowd that at one point is singing Hosanna, Hosanna, and yelling and screaming, and just a few days later, the crowd will yell, crucify him, crucify him, crucify him. 00:14:54.480 --> 00:15:06.399 And Pontius Pilate will wash his hands, and Jesus will go to the cross in front of the same people who at one point were cheering him on. 00:15:10.320 --> 00:15:24.240 These people who looked religious, who even saw miracles, but in a very short time they're going to participate in the murder of the followers of Jesus in the early church and the persecution. 00:15:26.480 --> 00:15:45.840 Now, I know for me, when it comes to tears flowing, I I can get upset about being hurt or being misunderstood or being embarrassed. 00:15:46.320 --> 00:15:50.960 But rarely do I weep over how my sin has hurt God. 00:15:54.159 --> 00:16:03.600 And you may feel a lot of emotions, and maybe even this week you felt loss and fatigue and compassion. 00:16:04.879 --> 00:16:12.320 But I wonder if we would be as broken over our sin as we are over our circumstances. 00:16:13.279 --> 00:16:22.879 Jesus is looking at this crowd and he's showing them what is to come. 00:16:24.960 --> 00:16:30.960 And he's telling them that the stones are going to be pulled off of stones and the temple is going to be torn down. 00:16:31.200 --> 00:16:38.720 And in that moment, Jesus is placing himself and telling him, like he had told them before, that he is the foundation. 00:16:40.480 --> 00:16:44.639 See, we have to be a people that don't forget the foundation. 00:16:46.720 --> 00:16:53.279 Jesus was the cornerstone of the temple that the Jewish people rejected. 00:16:53.519 --> 00:17:06.880 And even today, we can be guilty of building tiny temples in our life of temporary things that get in the way of our relationship with God, even good things. 00:17:07.039 --> 00:17:10.640 May it be career, your career or accomplishments or entertainment. 00:17:10.880 --> 00:17:13.359 But if it's not Jesus, it doesn't last. 00:17:14.799 --> 00:17:16.400 He's the foundation. 00:17:16.799 --> 00:17:23.519 Jesus tells them, you didn't recognize when God visited you. 00:17:24.000 --> 00:17:27.359 You aren't seeing me right in front of your eyes. 00:17:27.519 --> 00:17:39.519 Jesus is seeing religious activity, but not a spiritual sensitivity to what's actually going on, and he weeps not out of weakness, but because his love would be rejected. 00:17:43.839 --> 00:17:50.799 These people who were religious and had rituals and even had the scripture, they missed when God walked in. 00:17:53.039 --> 00:18:03.920 They were expecting this political salvation, but they rejected the personal surrender and recognizing Jesus as the Messiah. 00:18:07.200 --> 00:18:10.000 There's a lot of religious activity today. 00:18:10.799 --> 00:18:14.240 And we can even think to ourselves, well, you know what? 00:18:14.319 --> 00:18:19.279 Like, I mean, I go to church, so I'm good. 00:18:21.279 --> 00:18:25.519 But I can't call myself a car just because I stand in a garage. 00:18:27.839 --> 00:18:35.359 You can't call yourself a Christian just because you came to church or you come to church, or maybe you grew up going to grandma's church. 00:18:35.519 --> 00:18:40.799 It's an active decision for you to be renewed in Christ. 00:18:42.240 --> 00:18:47.279 Because proximity to religion, that doesn't equal peace with God. 00:18:47.440 --> 00:18:53.039 It's only by renewal, by the blood of Jesus, that we're washed from the inside. 00:18:59.440 --> 00:19:02.640 The temple looks stable. 00:19:04.000 --> 00:19:06.960 But Jesus said that it would fall. 00:19:07.680 --> 00:19:12.640 And there are times in our life where we hit rock bottom. 00:19:13.200 --> 00:19:26.000 And when we hit rock bottom, bottom, sometimes as we hit rock bottom, God shows us that He's the only foundation at the bottom. 00:19:29.839 --> 00:19:36.160 And so if you hit rock bottom, I wonder do you hit the rock of ages? 00:19:37.119 --> 00:19:40.640 Do you have the right foundation or do you not? 00:19:42.640 --> 00:19:47.759 We have to be a people that don't forget that our foundation is in Christ. 00:19:49.119 --> 00:19:58.640 And so in this passage, Jesus is entering in, he's giving this prophecy to the people of Jerusalem. 00:19:59.519 --> 00:20:09.519 We also reflect on ourselves, and and it might be good for you to ask this question of God this week in holy week and just say, God, show me where I've missed you. 00:20:12.319 --> 00:20:16.000 Or maybe that thing that you've been excusing, you need to confess it. 00:20:18.559 --> 00:20:28.799 Or maybe you need to spend time praying and reflecting instead of performance and productivity. 00:20:31.200 --> 00:20:34.000 Now we're going to flash forward. 00:20:35.759 --> 00:20:38.319 We're going to zoom forward in the story. 00:20:38.640 --> 00:20:39.839 Jesus has been arrested. 00:20:40.000 --> 00:20:40.799 He's been tried. 00:20:44.640 --> 00:20:47.359 A crown of thorns is putting put on his head. 00:20:47.759 --> 00:20:48.880 He's been mocked. 00:20:49.119 --> 00:20:50.559 He's been spit on. 00:20:53.119 --> 00:21:01.519 And he's carrying his cross up the hill to Golgotha, to Calvary. 00:21:01.839 --> 00:21:05.839 And there's a moment in the story where Jesus falls. 00:21:08.000 --> 00:21:14.000 And there's a man in the crowd, Simon of Cyrene, who's asked to pick up the cross. 00:21:15.359 --> 00:21:25.759 And Jesus, again, gives some words to some people who are standing close that gets almost no airtime in the story of Easter. 00:21:30.079 --> 00:21:32.400 Verse 26 of Luke 23. 00:21:33.519 --> 00:21:39.519 As they led Jesus away, a man named Simon, who was from Cyrene, happened to be coming in from the countryside. 00:21:39.599 --> 00:21:44.000 The soldiers seized him and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. 00:21:44.240 --> 00:21:48.559 A large crowd trailed behind, including many grief stricken women. 00:21:48.799 --> 00:21:57.680 But Jesus turned and said to them, Daughters of Jerusalem, don't weep for me, but weep for yourselves and your children. 00:21:58.240 --> 00:21:59.759 And then he goes on again to describe. 00:22:00.480 --> 00:22:07.279 What's going to happen in just four decades of the destruction that's going to happen to Jerusalem. 00:22:08.240 --> 00:22:17.440 And Jesus turns and he rebukes these ladies not because their feelings are wrong, it's because Jesus wanted them to really see. 00:22:20.000 --> 00:22:22.160 He tells them not to weep for him. 00:22:25.119 --> 00:22:32.319 And the tears that's flowing, he's wanting from them the kind of tears that will actually lead to their change. 00:22:35.039 --> 00:22:45.200 See, so many times I want to feel close to Jesus, but I avoid facing what I need to surrender in order to be close to him. 00:22:48.960 --> 00:22:57.119 It's possible that we can feel deep feelings and be deeply moved, but not actually transformed. 00:22:58.160 --> 00:23:07.839 And Jesus turns to these women and he looks at them as they're weeping for him, and he essentially tells them, don't weep for the wrong things. instead that our tears flow for the things that truly matter, not just our preferences. 00:23:28.000 --> 00:23:40.400 It's possible for us to let our feelings put us in a place where we feel like, well, you know, I felt emotionally moved, so that means I'm close to God. 00:23:40.480 --> 00:23:44.720 But it's not feelings that transform us, it's faith that transforms us. 00:23:47.200 --> 00:23:51.839 See, Jesus didn't die for our sympathy, he died for our salvation. 00:23:55.039 --> 00:23:58.480 And just being emotional doesn't mean that we're close to God. 00:23:58.640 --> 00:24:06.400 It's only through the renewal and the repentance that comes and the sorrow that comes in true repentance that salvation can come. 00:24:06.640 --> 00:24:14.720 It's when we actually are weeping and our weeping turns inwardly that his grace is able to flow out of us outwardly. 00:24:16.319 --> 00:24:24.960 Now, on a holy week like this, and I I think I can't think about holy week without thinking about the Passion of the Christ movie. 00:24:26.720 --> 00:24:29.440 By show of hands, who's all seen the Passion of the Christ? 00:24:30.720 --> 00:24:34.240 Okay, probably like 75% of the room. 00:24:34.880 --> 00:24:44.880 I remember the first time that I saw The Passion of the Christ, I was very young, and each time I watched the Passion of the Christ, it's uh it's hard to watch. 00:24:45.920 --> 00:24:48.720 Because of the suffering, because of the injustice. 00:24:50.559 --> 00:25:03.920 And what hit me in reading this text is that as we're watching, as I'm watching the Passion of Christ, Jesus doesn't want my pity. 00:25:08.079 --> 00:25:17.920 He wants tears from me of life change and brokenness over my sin and my renewal and my repentance and my surrender to him. 00:25:21.039 --> 00:25:27.680 I think about how oftentimes as I think about the cross, I want to cry. 00:25:27.920 --> 00:25:34.799 Or I feel deeply, and I just think about Jesus turning to these ladies and saying, Don't weep for me. 00:25:36.000 --> 00:25:40.400 Jesus went to the cross out of love, voluntarily. 00:25:40.720 --> 00:25:43.279 He laid his life down for us. 00:25:47.039 --> 00:26:29.519 And as Jesus hung on the cross, and he invited a thief next to him to join him in paradise, and as he spoke to the followers and those that were in front of him, with his final breath, he says to Telestar, it is finished, it's paid in full, and he doesn't say it in a whisper or in a whimper, he yells it out. 00:26:30.160 --> 00:26:32.400 It is finished. 00:26:34.079 --> 00:26:46.960 And in those final moments, we see that the sky goes dark and the earth begins to shake, and there's women that are there that are standing at a distance and they're watching. 00:26:47.119 --> 00:26:53.119 This is later, just a few chapter a few verses down in Luke chapter 23, verse 44. 00:26:53.920 --> 00:27:00.000 But this time it was about noon, and darkness fell across the whole land until three o'clock. 00:27:00.160 --> 00:27:06.079 The light from the sun was gone, and suddenly the curtain in the sanctuary of the temple was torn down the middle. 00:27:06.240 --> 00:27:11.039 Then Jesus shouted, Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands. 00:27:12.079 --> 00:27:14.880 And with those words he breathed his last breath. 00:27:15.119 --> 00:27:22.400 And when the Roman officer overseeing the execution saw what had happened, he worshipped God and said, Surely this man was innocent. 00:27:23.519 --> 00:27:29.440 And when all the crowd that came to see the crucifixion saw what had happened, they went home in deep sorrow. 00:27:30.079 --> 00:27:37.119 But Jesus' friends, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance watching. 00:27:38.880 --> 00:27:46.240 When I think about that picture of the cross and I watch Passion of Christ or I see these images, I want to look away. 00:27:47.920 --> 00:27:54.079 But Jesus doesn't just want me to look away out of pity or of shame. 00:27:54.240 --> 00:27:56.799 He doesn't want me just to spectate. 00:28:06.480 --> 00:28:11.039 But the cross is supposed to be something that we are cleansed by. 00:28:12.640 --> 00:28:21.839 That we wouldn't just be close to the cross and proximity like some of these people who were standing around the cross and some of the women that followed him. 00:28:23.440 --> 00:28:28.720 But not only would we near the cross, but that we would be cleansed by it. 00:28:29.680 --> 00:28:34.799 Jesus doesn't just want like our whitewash behavior. 00:28:35.359 00:29:14.000 --> 00:29:26.799 He died so that we would be cleansed, so that we would be washed from the inside out, and that he would be able to do this holy, restorative work that we could never do on our own, that we couldn't possibly do for ourselves. 00:29:27.359 --> 00:29:48.079 And as these women were weeping on the road, and then hopefully they realized that Jesus wasn't asking for their tears, he was giving them an opportunity to be washed, to be cleansed. 00:29:48.559 --> 00:30:05.359 And so we don't treat the cross as just this something to admire, we treat it as something that we place ourselves at the feet of and surrender. 00:30:08.880 --> 00:30:16.640 So that means that we get brutally honest in our prayers with the Lord. 00:30:19.279 --> 00:30:25.119 And we aren't just
