19-year-old on a college campus would lead to the salvation of my wife, who you saw a picture of, who we met my sophomore year, and that I would leave my home state of Georgia to be a pastor in the 00:01:32.879 Um, to get us started today, I want to read from God's word in the book of John, chapter 8, 31 and 32. 00:01:32.959 --> 00:01:38.799 And this scripture is just gonna settle our hearts into the posture that we need to take today as we dive into the message. 00:01:39.439 --> 00:01:40.000 Says this. 00:01:40.159 --> 00:01:54.319 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, if you abide in my word, meaning live your life, immersed in my word, you are truly my disciples. 00:01:54.959 --> 00:02:00.959 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. 00:02:02.319 --> 00:02:09.840 Today, church, with that scripture in mind, I want to talk to you about embracing the tension of that truth. 00:02:10.719 --> 00:02:21.840 Throughout this series, each weekend is aiming to bring life to values of multiplied church off of a sheet of paper somewhere into the hearts of the members of the church. 00:02:22.080 --> 00:02:30.800 And though these are values of multiplied church, what we believe is that these are just values for being faithful disciples of Jesus. 00:02:31.120 --> 00:02:41.280 And so when we talk about embracing the tension, what we mean is being those type of people who are bold both in God's grace and in God's truth. 00:02:41.680 --> 00:02:52.159 It's about submitting to the truth of God's word and all of its practical do's and don'ts, and in its heart for unity and grace as a body of Christ. 00:02:52.560 --> 00:03:04.240 It's about walking in humility, it's it's leaning into hard conversations when they come, remembering that we are called to heart level first this morning. 00:03:18.240 --> 00:03:25.919 I want to help us discover what it looks like to have a heart posture that allows us to embrace the tension. 00:03:26.000 --> 00:03:31.520 And we're gonna do that from the book of Luke, chapter 8, verses 4 through 15. 00:03:31.599 --> 00:03:35.039 And if you've ever read the book of Luke, this will be a familiar passage to you. 00:03:35.199 --> 00:03:36.479 It's one of my favorites. 00:03:36.639 --> 00:03:41.840 I think it helps me understand what it looks like to live this faith out Sunday to Sunday. 00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:58.800 Here's what it says As a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from every town, he said in a parable A sower went out to sow his seed, and as he sowed, some seed fell along the path. 00:03:59.120 --> 00:04:03.039 It was trampled on, and the birds of the sky devoured it. 00:04:03.280 --> 00:04:09.439 Other seed fell on the rock, and when it grew up, it withered away, since it lacked moisture. 00:04:09.599 --> 00:04:13.919 Other seed fell among thorns, the thorns grew up with it and choked it. 00:04:14.080 --> 00:04:22.879 Still other seed fell on good ground, and when it grew up, it produced fruit a hundred times what was sown. 00:04:24.079 --> 00:04:30.319 As he said this, he called out, Let anyone who has ears to hear listen. 00:04:31.360 --> word of God, the seed along the path are those who have heard, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 00:05:05.439 --> 00:05:16.319 The seed on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy, having no root, these bel these believe for a while and fall away in times of testing. 00:05:16.639 --> 00:05:44.720 As for the seed that fell among the thorns, these are the ones who, when they have heard, go on their way, and are choked with worries, riches, and pleasures of life, and produce no mature fruit, but the seed in the good ground, these are the ones who, having heard the word with an honest and good heart, hold on to it, and by enduring produce fruit. 00:05:45.759 --> 00:05:47.519 Bless the reading of God's word. 00:05:47.920 --> 00:05:59.519 Now, because I know God's word to be true, as I stand before you right now inside this room, exists the possibility for all four of those souls to be present. 00:06:00.480 --> 00:06:15.360 As the word goes forth today, and every day, whether it's through a preacher like me, whether it's through reading God's word, whether it's through a song that you hear, its potential in our life is based on how we receive it, but also how we maintain it. 00:06:15.839 --> 00:06:20.879 In our passage, it's obvious that Jesus wants us to be the good soul. 00:06:21.360 --> 00:06:26.560 And the first step in that process is examining where we are today. 00:06:26.800 --> 00:06:28.000 Here's what I want you to know. 00:06:28.160 --> 00:06:33.519 Every time that you come to church, you have an opportunity to come in with whatever heart posture you decide. 00:06:33.680 --> 00:06:37.759 And the heart posture I want to urge us to have today is a heart of humility. 00:06:38.079 --> 00:06:44.000 Because a heart of humility comes into a gathering like this knowing that God has a word for them. 00:06:44.800 --> 00:06:52.959 A humble heart comes into a gathering like this knowing that they are not where God wants them to be, and they are willing to receive what God has for them today. 00:06:53.040 --> 00:06:54.959 And I want us to be in that posture. 00:06:55.360 --> 00:06:59.439 My favorite scripture that charges us with that is 2 Corinthians 13, 5. 00:06:59.680 --> 00:07:15.759 It calls us to this practice when it says, test yourself to see if you are in the faith, examine yourselves, or do you yourselves not recognize that Jesus is in you unless you fail the test? 00:07:16.319 --> 00:07:22.879 What the Apostle Paul is getting at is that every day of our faith journey is filled with daily decisions. 00:07:23.120 --> 00:07:32.720 And as you go about making your daily decisions, you have to understand that some of the daily decisions that you're going to be asked to make might not align with the faith you possess. 00:07:33.120 --> 00:07:47.759 And so as you go about making your daily decisions, even in your heart posture, you want to be asking yourself, does this decision I'm making, if I make it, will it profess the truth of God's word in my life? 00:07:48.560 --> 00:07:55.680 Does the way that I'm living, does it show evidence of God's grace, but also of his discipleship? 00:07:57.040 --> 00:08:02.399 Does my faith contradict or confirm the words of Jesus? 00:08:02.720 --> 00:08:08.639 Those are the type of questions as mature believers we have to be not afraid to ask. 00:08:09.279 --> 00:08:10.319 Now here's the truth. 00:08:10.480 --> 00:08:18.399 Regardless of how you answer that question, the good news is that good soul is on the other side of just being willing. 00:08:19.040 --> 00:08:26.079 In that we find three ways this passage teaches us about what it looks like to be willing followers of Jesus. 00:08:26.240 --> 00:08:28.800 When Jesus was describing the good soul, he said this. 00:08:28.959 --> 00:08:34.159 He said, number one, they receive the truth with an honest and good heart. 00:08:34.480 --> 00:08:43.919 So the first thing you need to know is that every time you encounter God's word, whether you read it or whether you hear it, I want to challenge you to pray that the Holy Spirit will give you a soft heart. 00:08:44.320 --> 00:08:53.200 I want to challenge you to say, Holy Spirit, give me a word that only you can give me about my situation, about my life, and about my commitment to Jesus. 00:08:53.440 --> 00:09:06.159 We got to come before God with an honest heart, acknowledging our sins, acknowledging where we've fallen short, being faithful to repent of those things, and at the same time understanding that God's goodness is the only place that He's leading us to. 00:09:06.240 --> 00:09:12.799 So even when something sounds hard when I receive it, it's leading me to something good and holy and righteous in the Lord. 00:09:13.120 --> 00:09:18.799 The second thing is this is that they held on to the truth with everything they had. 00:09:19.279 --> 00:09:22.159 It uses the the language of enduring. 00:09:23.360 --> 00:09:29.679 It uses the examples of the others to show what they had to go through to remain good soil. 00:09:29.840 --> 00:09:34.240 So just like the soil before it, they they deal with the worries of the world too. 00:09:34.480 --> 00:09:37.279 The pleasures of life tried to get them too. 00:09:37.919 --> 00:09:46.159 Their jobs and their careers and their families and their relationship status, all these things tried to come in and rob them of the seed that God had planted in their heart. 00:09:46.240 --> 00:09:47.279 But there was something different. 00:09:47.440 --> 00:09:50.799 When those things came, they abided in Christ. 00:09:51.279 --> 00:09:55.120 They held on to the word of God with everything they had. 00:09:55.200 --> 00:09:58.799 And that's what it looks like for us if we want to be willing Christ followers. 00:09:58.879 --> 00:10:03.840 The third thing that we read is that they endured the cost of living in that truth. 00:10:04.240 --> 00:10:06.480 See, this is the part that we don't like so often. 00:10:06.639 --> 00:10:11.360 See, sometimes enduring the cost of following Jesus means that you got to miss out on stuff sometimes. 00:10:11.600 --> 00:10:16.960 There's some trends and some things that come and go in the world that Christ followers just don't get to be a part of. 00:10:17.840 --> 00:10:25.039 There's also some hardship, some heartbreak that's gonna come into your life sometimes when you live according to the truth of God. 00:10:25.120 --> 00:10:31.120 There are gonna be some relationships that are gonna break your heart to end, but it's for your good to end that relationship. 00:10:31.360 --> 00:10:33.759 And God is calling you to that goodness. 00:10:34.159 --> 00:10:39.519 There are gonna be some careers or some jobs that God is gonna tell you it's time to leave, it's time to go. 00:10:39.679 --> 00:10:42.879 But you know leaving this job means leaving this big old house I got. 00:10:42.960 --> 00:10:45.759 And God says, trust me, not the paycheck. 00:10:46.559 --> 00:10:58.159 There are gonna be times where you're gonna be called to endure in relational capacities where your commitment to Jesus will be at odd with your entire friend group, and that peer pressure is gonna come. 00:10:58.399 --> 00:11:10.799 And those are gonna be times that the Holy Spirit will empower you to stand if you are a willing disciple, to be a testimony to your friends that I'm not here just to be your friend, but I'm here to point you to the Savior. 00:11:12.639 --> 00:11:20.799 That's what it looks like to be a willing heart, to be good soul in God's hands. 00:11:21.440 --> 00:11:32.799 I love those distinctions because they encompass what we often focus on when it comes to embracing the tension of following Jesus. 00:11:33.600 --> 00:11:46.559 Like when we think about endurance, when we think about holding on, when we think about having a good and honest heart, as we wrestle with truth, sometimes we have to ask the question, well, God, what actually is truth? 00:11:47.200 --> 00:11:59.759 We gotta be willing to ask questions like what is the right thing to believe, and what is the right religious practice to commit to because of these beliefs that I'm holding on to for the rest of my life. 00:12:00.240 --> 00:12:06.879 Theologically, we call this process or we call this idea orthodoxy and orthopraxy. 00:12:07.200 --> 00:12:08.320 Here are the definitions. 00:12:08.480 --> 00:12:12.480 Orthodoxy is embracing the tension of the truth and belief. 00:12:12.799 --> 00:12:36.559 What that means is uh living in orthodoxy means that when I read God's word and it says, when Jesus says, There is no way to the Father except through me, we embrace that as truth, even though it's really hard for me to believe that when I got friends who are Muslim, when I got friends who are Hindu, when I got friends who are atheists, because I want everybody to get in. 00:12:36.799 --> 00:12:46.879 But if I'm committing to Jesus, then I have to commit also to the idea that there's only one true religion in the world, and that is following Jesus, even when it's hard. 00:12:47.120 --> 00:12:52.559 Now, orthopraxy is embracing the tension of truth in practice. 00:12:52.799 --> 00:12:59.759 And this is the idea of saying, I'm not just gonna come and be a hearer of the word, but I'm gonna be a doer of the word. 00:13:00.480 --> 00:13:10.000 When Jesus in his word calls me to turn and repent or to move away from something, I don't just hear it and let it sting me, but I choose to walk in that newness of life. 00:13:10.559 --> 00:13:13.039 My actions match my words. 00:13:13.200 --> 00:13:17.200 I don't just get on the public say, this is a big problem in our society right now. 00:13:17.360 --> 00:13:19.840 I was I was talking to my men's Saturday small group. 00:13:19.919 --> 00:13:30.080 We're reading through the book of Proverbs, and if you ever read through the book of Proverbs, I mean, you get to like chapter 15 and 16, and it's like it's really hard to read those and be hateful people. 00:13:30.320 --> 00:13:32.480 It's really hard to read those and be spiteful people. 00:13:32.559 --> 00:13:38.480 It's really hard to read those and not care about what you're doing because it teaches you all about the principle of sowing and reaping. 00:13:38.639 --> 00:13:58.879 And I was reading that and I said, man, you know what breaks my heart is there are a lot of people who have a public space right now as Christians, and I'm afraid they might have never read the book of Proverbs because they profess with their mouth that they are rocking with Jesus, but some of the initiatives and some of the things that they're doing in a public space have nothing to do with Jesus. 00:13:59.120 --> 00:14:07.360 And they're giving people a character of what it means to walk with Jesus that we faithful believers on the ground have to fight against every day. 00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:12.720 And so we got to be people who are committed to the practices of Jesus. 00:14:13.600 --> 00:14:21.440 Now, the way that we get to orthodoxy and orthopraxy is learning how to deal best with our emotions, and that's what we call orthopathy. 00:14:22.080 --> 00:14:29.200 This is embracing the tension of the truth in our passions, in our emotions, and our concerns. 00:14:29.440 --> 00:14:33.600 So it's not just belief and it's not just action, but it's also our heart. 00:14:33.759 --> 00:14:37.519 Our heart has to be submitted to the truth of God's word as well. 00:14:38.320 --> 00:14:46.799 Now, make no mistake about it, embracing tension is about our doctrines, it is about our practices, and it is about our restraints. 00:14:46.879 --> 00:15:01.840 Yet, from the lens and example of Jesus in our passage, but also through his life that led him to death on a cross, the fruit of those things authentically taking root in our lives should look like perseverance. 00:15:02.799 --> 00:15:15.679 It should look like long suffering, it should look like self-forgetfulness, it should look like a faith, when you think about not backsliding whatever words you want to use, the reason that we commit to like orthopraxy and orthodoxy and orthopathy or the full-fledged submission of our whole being we encounter his word and it stings, and that when we're called to press on, when it feels easier to quit, that we understand his goodness is with us even in the middle of the storm. 00:22:33.279 -->
