this second week of our plenty series. 00:00:37.520 --> 00:00:41.200 The title of my message today is Plenty of Fish and Loaves. 00:00:41.359 --> 00:00:45.759 Who in the house believes that we worship the God of Plenty, of overflow? 00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:50.719 The greatest above all. 00:00:50.880 --> 00:01:02.159 Last week we jumped into a story about a widow who had nothing at all except a little oil, and God turned her faith into plenty. 00:01:03.039 --> 00:01:20.560 And I'm excited today as we jump into the second installment of this series of plenty, and we're going to start by setting the foundation with a statement and a teaching of Paul as he's quoting Jesus to the Ephesians as he's teaching them about giving. 00:01:21.040 --> 00:01:23.760 And what he tells them is profound. 00:01:23.840 --> 00:01:31.359 He's teaching them from his own example, and he quotes our Lord Jesus in Acts chapter 20, verse 35. 00:01:32.159 --> 00:01:37.840 When he says, I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. 00:01:38.000 --> 00:01:41.680 You should remember the words of Lord of the Lord Jesus. 00:01:41.840 --> 00:01:45.200 It is more blessed to give than to receive. 00:01:45.840 --> 00:01:59.599 Last week, as we talked about there being plenty of grace from our God that we have from Jesus and the gratitude that overflows from us when we have the lens of gratitude, that we would have an understanding that we already have plenty from Christ. 00:01:59.680 --> 00:02:04.319 And we talked about opening up our eyes to what we can see that God's already richly blessed us with. 00:02:04.400 --> 00:02:07.040 And this morning we talked about opening up our hands. 00:02:07.599 --> 00:02:17.919 Last week I was showing my six-year-old daughter pictures of the 80 Thanksgiving meals that you all prepared for families across six local schools. 00:02:18.080 --> 00:02:26.159 And I had some pictures that I was showing to my six-year-old after church, and she was looking at the pictures, she was like, That is so awesome. 00:02:26.639 --> 00:02:28.639 I love that our church did that. 00:02:28.800 --> 00:02:30.240 That's so great. 00:02:30.960 --> 00:02:45.120 And something that my wife and I we tried to instill in our girls from an early age is this principle that Jesus tells us in Acts 20, 35 in the kindergarten version, which is it's better to give than to get. 00:02:52.319 --> 00:02:53.439 But why? 00:02:55.680 --> 00:02:57.919 Why is it better to give than to get? 00:02:58.080 --> 00:02:59.680 Why did Jesus even say this? 00:02:59.840 --> 00:03:02.800 Why did Jesus even give us this principle? 00:03:02.960 --> 00:03:09.759 Because the crazy thing is that a lot of us believe that our God is a generous God right until he asks us to give. 00:03:10.479 --> 00:03:20.319 Or we trust him with our salvation, but we don't trust him to provide as we flow and walk in the principles of generosity that he's given to us. 00:03:20.560 --> 00:03:22.159 And we all get it. 00:03:22.479 --> 00:03:39.120 We all get it because how life goes and the things that we think and the way that our mindset is around this, even though Jesus tells us as much to for us to know that it's better for us to give than to get. 00:03:40.240 --> 00:03:46.000 But maybe for you you've had these thoughts like, you know, well, I'll be generous when I finally get ahead. 00:03:46.719 --> 00:03:50.879 But the problem is that a head never comes, it's always moving. 00:03:51.680 --> 00:04:02.879 The thought of being generous someday, it just never happens to be and turn into today generosity. 00:04:03.039 --> 00:04:07.120 Or maybe you're thinking, well, what I have to give, it won't actually help. 00:04:07.360 --> 00:04:12.159 Like somebody else should give financially, my little bit, it just doesn't even matter. 00:04:12.319 --> 00:04:22.800 Can I tell you, if this is the soundtrack that's in your head, you're not weird, you're not broken, you're just believing a smaller story than the one that Jesus is inviting you into. 00:04:25.120 --> 00:04:27.120 And that's exactly what we're gonna look at today. 00:04:27.199 --> 00:04:37.519 We're gonna look at a story of Jesus as this story unfolds of this miracle of multiplication. 00:04:38.319 --> 00:04:43.439 And Jesus is talking to his disciples and he asked them a question that he already has the answer to. 00:04:43.519 --> 00:04:54.639 See, there's this huge crowd that's following Jesus, but there's a problem because Jesus wants his disciples to feed them, but there's no Chick-fil-A catering around at the time. 00:04:55.040 --> 00:04:56.720 That's not an option. 00:04:57.519 --> 00:05:02.800 And Jesus asked this question of his disciples, and he already knows the answer to the question. 00:05:02.879 --> 00:05:04.560 It's literally just a test. 00:05:05.040 --> 00:05:09.279 The scripture tells us he's literally just testing the disciples. 00:05:09.600 --> 00:05:15.759 Because Jesus, he attends to do this miracle of multiplication with fish and loaves. 00:05:15.920 --> 00:05:22.240 And you've probably heard this story, or 00:05:45.120 A generous church that over the last few years we've gotten to see God flow in and through us to be able to serve, love our city, to be three years old, to be debt-free and in a permanent space. 00:05:45.199 --> 00:05:47.199 Like these things just don't happen. 00:05:47.519 --> 00:05:55.439 And you stepped into a generous church, and we're looking at the story of Jesus as he's testing his disciples. 00:05:55.519 --> 00:05:58.319 And so if you have your Bible, you can turn to John chapter 6. 00:05:58.399 --> 00:05:59.360 It's gonna be on the screen. 00:05:59.439 --> 00:06:02.079 If you have your phone, look up John chapter 6. 00:06:02.160 --> 00:06:03.360 We're gonna start in verse 5. 00:06:03.439 --> 00:06:07.439 There's just 11 verses, or it's just six verses here to verse 11. 00:06:07.839 --> 00:06:10.800 This is what happens in verse 5. 00:06:10.959 --> 00:06:15.920 Jesus soon saw a huge crowd of people coming to look for him. 00:06:16.160 --> 00:06:20.959 Turning to Philip, he asks, Where can we buy bread to feed all these people? 00:06:21.759 --> 00:06:26.480 He was testing Philip, for he already knew what he was going to do. 00:06:27.120 --> 00:06:28.000 Verse 7. 00:06:28.240 --> 00:06:33.120 Philip replied, Even if we worked for months, we wouldn't have enough food to feed them. 00:06:34.240 --> 00:06:37.279 And then Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up. 00:06:37.519 --> 00:06:44.639 There's a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish, but what good is that to this huge crowd? 00:06:45.040 --> 00:06:46.160 Verse 10. 00:06:46.480 --> 00:06:48.879 Tell everyone to sit down, Jesus said. 00:06:50.639 --> 00:06:53.040 And they all sat down on the grassy slopes. 00:06:53.279 --> 00:06:56.639 The men alone numbered about 5,000. 00:06:57.360 --> 00:06:58.160 Verse 11. 00:06:58.319 --> 00:07:01.360 Then Jesus took the loaves and gave thanks to God. 00:07:01.519 --> 00:07:06.720 Everybody saying thanks to God and distributed them to the people. 00:07:06.879 --> 00:07:14.639 And afterward, he did the same with the fish, and they all ate as much as they wanted. 00:07:14.879 --> 00:07:18.879 And we know that there was even 12 baskets that were left over. 00:07:19.439 --> 00:07:27.839 Now, I don't know about you, but oftentimes I do the exact same thing as Philip did in this story. 00:07:28.079 --> 00:07:40.319 I'm looking at the needs, I'm looking at the the crowd of needs, and then I look at my bank app and my calendar, and I scratch my head and I think, this is not enough. 00:07:40.639 --> 00:07:50.079 You know, I I can talk myself out of faith pretty quickly with a calculator and with a worst-case scenario thought in my head. 00:07:50.639 --> 00:07:53.279 What could possibly happen? 00:07:53.759 --> 00:07:59.600 But maybe you're like Philip too, that as you think about generosity, the math just isn't mathing. 00:08:00.639 --> 00:08:07.360 And you want to be a blessing, but just you immediately think of all the things the mortgage, the groceries, the Christmas. 00:08:07.519 --> 00:08:10.800 Or maybe you're like Andrew, the disciple. 00:08:10.879 --> 00:08:18.480 It's that there's there's this little that I could give, but what good is it with all of these needs? 00:08:18.639 --> 00:08:19.759 Can I ask you? 00:08:20.079 --> 00:08:22.959 Can I ask you to follow Jesus into the bigger and pull out the calculator. 00:08:33.840 --> 00:08:46.240 We consider the one who's calling us and the one who is our God that is rich in mercy and in glory, the God of the universe that owns all of the finances and all the money. 00:08:46.320 --> 00:08:48.960 The scripture says he has a cattle on a thousand hills. 00:08:49.200 --> 00:08:52.159 Jesus isn't asking us to feed 5,000. 00:08:52.320 --> 00:08:55.759 He's asking us, will you trust me with what's in your hands? 00:08:57.679 --> 00:09:01.440 See, the boy's lunch wasn't the thing that fixed the problem. 00:09:01.600 --> 00:09:03.039 It was Jesus. 00:09:03.840 --> 00:09:10.000 The Jesus that we follow that had a bigger story than that little boy had. 00:09:40.080 --> 00:09:46.240 You know, the only difference between too small to matter and more than enough is whose hands it's in. 00:09:47.600 --> 00:09:52.480 And we're we're not just the people who are just out here just living a life of paying bills. 00:09:52.559 --> 00:09:57.759 We're we're a little boy with a lunch in the hands of our multiplying God. 00:09:59.120 --> 00:10:03.679 It's 80 families who received these meals this last week. 00:10:03.840 --> 00:10:09.200 The the schools, they were so thankful for the meals that were provided. 00:10:09.360 --> 00:10:20.960 But I bet those families were even more grateful and thankful because they wouldn't have to worry about where that Thanksgiving meal was going to come from, and they got to have peace in their home this Thanksgiving. 00:10:22.240 --> 00:10:30.639 You know, we've we've gotten to serve like we did this last week in our city, and we've gotten to serve over the last year. 00:10:30.960 --> 00:10:40.000 We've been able to serve in our city 28 times already this year, which is more than twice a month through our Frankfurt Forward initiative. 00:10:40.320 --> 00:10:50.000 And I'm so grateful for what God is doing through that team, through Jamie Aleka, who has led and coordinated this we've been sowing into our city now for years. 00:12:03.679 --> 00:12:12.159 And God, who's rich in mercy, has allowed us to be generous over and over again, and now we get to invite other people in very pointed teaching about generosity and giving to the church that is in Corinth, and he says it like this in 2 Corinthians chapter 9, verse 6. 00:12:56.799 --> 00:13:08.000 The point is this whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 00:13:08.240 --> 00:13:16.639 Each one must give as he's decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 00:13:18.000 --> 00:13:34.080 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times you may abound in every good work, as it is written, He distributed freely, he is given to the poor, his righteousness endures forever. 00:13:34.480 --> 00:13:44.799 He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 00:13:44.960 --> 00:13:53.440 You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. 00:13:55.039 --> 00:14:01.919 Now, this passage talks about this principle of sowing and reaping. 00:14:02.080 --> 00:14:14.559 And if I'm not thinking about all God is doing in his kingdom and what's happening, I just think like for me, I can feel like, oh, I'm I'm sowing out and I'm just reaping more bills and more bills and more bills. 00:14:15.679 --> 00:14:31.759 If I don't have my mind set on Christ and what he's doing in his kingdom, or maybe for you, you grew up in a church where giving all it was all it was talked about was just guilt and pressure. 00:14:32.720 --> 00:14:47.360 We just see from this passage that it's our God that is calling us into our generosity, not out guilt or pressure, but for us to give not reluctantly, but to give to him cheerfully. 00:14:48.240 --> 00:14:54.000 And ultimately the thing is that God doesn't need our money, he wants our hearts. 00:14:55.440 --> 00:14:58.639 Where your treasure is, your heart will be also, is what Jesus said. 00:14:59.120 --> 00:15:05.440 The treasure, it precedes the heart where your treasure is, where you're investing in generosity, that's where your heart will go. 00:15:05.519 --> 00:15:09.440 And Jesus wants us to give him our whole lives. 00:15:10.480 --> 00:15:14.639 And as we give to him, he's the one who does the multiply miracle. 00:15:15.120 --> 00:15:19.840 And the second point is that Jesus will multiply what you give, not what you hold back. 00:15:22.240 --> 00:15:25.919 This isn't a situation where we're just like giving 00:15:57.440 But Jesus is the one that He's the one who says that there's a blessing, that there will be bountiful, there will be a bountiful return as you are sowing then bountifully, then you're gonna reap bountifully. 00:15:57.600 --> 00:16:04.639 I feel like the only time you hear this word bountifully in culture is what's gonna happen to me on Thursday when I have a bountiful feast for he's the one who is going to bless our bountiful sowing, not our hoarding. 00:16:27.039 --> 00:16:41.919 And I I want to tell you all an update from this last year, around this time last year, as we were in our series and marching towards us all giving collectively together, like we'll do this year on December the 7th, last year. 00:16:42.080 --> 00:16:48.080 There was a couple in our church, a young couple in our church who God put it on their heart for them to give their savings last year. 00:16:48.159 --> 00:16:48.799 Do you remember this? 00:16:48.879 --> 00:16:55.759 If you were around, and we all collectively prayed for this young couple that God put it on their heart to do that. 00:16:55.840 --> 00:17:04.960 Now, God doesn't call everybody to do that, um, but they have been a couple that from the the outset of this have been generous. 00:17:05.039 --> 00:17:09.039 They've been tithers and generous in their giving for years now. 00:17:09.759 --> 00:17:27.599 And last year the Lord laid it on their heart for them to give their savings, and they did that in full of faith, believing that the Lord was going to then return to them and that they were gonna sow in and see the Lord return. 00:17:27.680 --> 00:17:32.799 And they were inspired by a story that we talked about last year of somebody giving their savings. 00:17:32.880 --> 00:17:36.720 And what happened over the course of this year were a lot of mountains and valleys. 00:17:38.079 --> 00:17:59.440 As the year went on, they were praying for uh the wife to who was looking for a new job in a better circumstance, and basically over months of this year, it led to several different interviews that went nowhere, got all the way to the end of the process, and then something didn't didn't work out. 00:17:59.920 --> 00:18:08.240 And so this couple was just they were just remaining in faith all year, continuing to give, continuing to tithe. 00:18:08.559 --> 00:18:24.799 And on August the 11th, she told me on August the 11th, she went to an interview and got picked and chosen for her dream job that has provided so much for their family. 00:18:24.880 --> 00:18:29.839 They've even been able to pay off debt that they had that they haven't been able to pay off previously. 00:18:30.079 --> 00:18:32.319 And all of that happened in the course of time. 00:18:32.720 --> 00:18:47.119 And as they were in faith, and not only that, all year long, they've got to see 20 people get in and out of the baptism waters in this house to move from death to life and know that God's growing his kingdom through this young couple and their faith. 00:18:52.079 --> 00:19:20.559 I tell you that story again, not because God's gonna call everybody to give their savings, and that may not be what God's leading you to, and that may not be the wise thing, but for them, they stepped out in faith and believing God, and bountifully so, and then for him to return it to them, and then to see God flow through this house to serve in our city, to see young people stepping in to serving. 00:19:21.279 --> 00:19:28.480 They're walking in the principle that Jesus gave to us that it is better to give than to receive. 00:19:29.039 --> 00:19:35.599 That as we sow bountifully, then we will reap bountifully, that we're gonna have all of our needs provided for. 00:19:35.759 --> 00:19:37.599 Can I tell you this too with this young couple? 00:19:37.680 --> 00:19:41.200 The story didn't end with they won the lottery and moved to Hawaii. 00:19:43.759 --> 00:19:47.680 The story ended with God provided their every need. 00:19:48.960 --> 00:20:02.960 Over and above, bountifully, a great opportunity and job for her to go to work, every good work, and see God flow in and through their lives. 00:20:03.039 --> 00:20:09.920 There's this principle is all throughout the scripture, it teaches us about us and our generosity. 00:20:10.160 --> 00:20:12.799 Even in Proverbs, it gives us the wisdom. 00:20:13.039 --> 00:20:16.720 It says it so plainly in Proverbs chapter 11, verse 24. 00:20:16.960 --> 00:20:21.839 Give freely and become more wealthy, be stingy and lose everything. 00:20:22.079 --> 00:20:28.559 The generous will prosper, but though those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed. 00:20:28.799 --> 00:20:30.480 Everybody say refreshed. 00:20:33.920 --> 00:20:43.039 Now, what makes sense in my brain is financially is that if I give, then I'll have less. 00:20:44.960 --> 00:20:53.359 And maybe for you, when you think about generosity, generosity, it sounds like, well, I can't afford to do that. 00:20:53.920 --> 00:21:03.519 But we we need to realize the fact that generosity doesn't lead to less life, it leads to more life. 00:21:03.680 --> 00:21:05.039 That's my third point. 00:21:05.279 --> 00:21:05.839 More life. 00:21:06.000 --> 00:21:15.920 See, the world will tell us that giving that it equals less, but in God's kingdom, in God's economy, giving equals growing in Christ. 00:21:16.240 his whole. 00:22:00.240 --> 00:22:36.720 Whole self to you, not just a portion of himself, not just a little bit of his blood, but he poured out his whole self on the cross in your place to purchase the pathway for you to be forgiven, to be set free, to walk in his blessing from now into heaven, and this overflow that we receive from Jesus in this plenty of grace that we talked about last week, wife and I at the beginning of this year, uh, we decided together in prayer that we were going to give 11% this year. 00:23:11.599 --> 00:23:17.039 And for the beginning year, start giving 11%, giving our tithe, and then over and above it all year long. 00:23:17.119 --> 00:23:27.519 And it has been super annoying because I have to get my calculator out every time because I can figure out 10% in my head, but 11% I got to get my calculator out and put it every time because like who can do 11% in their head? 00:23:27.599 --> 00:23:29.119 Like nobody can do that. 00:23:29.839 --> 00:23:38.799 And then as I'm giving, been giving on the app, I've just tried to just in a cheerful spirit spirit have a smile on my face and and and giving. 00:23:39.039 --> 00:23:42.720 And for you, just I want you And as you do that, you're gonna see what God wants to do in and through you. 00:23:59.519 --> 00:24:14.079 For you to begin to give, and what you're then gonna see in the bountiful sowing and the
