Episode Summary: Albert Mitchell, author of The Way of the Sphinx, joins the podcast for a conversation that moves from the roots of patriarchy to the path toward masculine-feminine union, and from there into his reimagined, elemental approach to the zodiac. We close with a Leo embodiment practice, timed to Leo season and the approaching new moon in Leo.

Topics Covered:

  • Spirituality and its role in modern daily life
  • Tracing patriarchy's roots — from ancient Greece, into Christianity, and outward across the globe
  • What it means to move from patriarchy into a balanced union of masculine and feminine
  • Introduction to The Way of the Sphinx and its elemental reframing of the zodiac
  • Leo season, the new moon in Leo, and why we're diving into Leo now
  • A guided Leo embodiment practice

About the Guest: Albert Mitchell is a practicing occultist with a formal education in hypnotherapy, and lifelong student of philosophy. In his early twenties he experienced a destabilizing spiritual awakening which left him searching for a tradition to contextualize it. While he was initially drawn to shamanism, it wasn’t until he discovered the Qabalah and received mentorship within the Thelemic currents that he found a path which “clicked” with his western mind. He lives in Los Alamos, New Mexico with his soon-to-be-wife and son.

About the Book: For thousands of years, the Zodiac, and its wheel of twelve signs, has served as a source of mystery and fascination for those seeking insight into the universe and its nature.

While its diverse collection of images could appear to be an arbitrary assortment of symbols, the Zodiac has more to offer than it initially suggests. For the first time, this work reveals that overlapping motifs within the Zodiac’s symbolism imply that each of its twelve signs represent one of the four elements modified by one of the remaining three, and that the permutations generated this way are arranged in a symmetrical array.

Once uncovered, this intricate structure is explored through the lens of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn’s philosophy and the writings of the 19th Century French Magician Éliphas Lévi. The resulting piece of modern occultism is equal parts a comprehensive system of astrological magick and a holistic existential framework rooted in the Hermetic Tradition.
