10: In Tune with Your Fitness ft. Tori Usgaard

Kathleen Gellatly Season 1 Episode 10

In this tenth episode of the Aligned Living Podcast, we have an amazing conversation with our special guest, Tori Usgaar, the founder of Hype Fitness and Lifestyle Center in Cape Town. Tori shared her journey, insights, and the exciting journey of opening her first fitness studio in Cape Town City Center this November.

Tori's fitness journey started quite differently from many others. She was an athlete throughout her school and university years, with a heavy focus on track and field, particularly the Heptathlon. She reached impressive heights in her athletic career, achieving her goal of becoming an all-American athlete in the United States. However, her identity became so intertwined with her athletic success that she struggled to know herself beyond it.

After graduating and realizing that her athletic achievements didn't receive the attention she expected, Tori felt empty and disconnected from her true self. She made the decision to step away from competitive training and entered the working world. While this decision initially seemed like the right path, she eventually realized that she missed the athletic aspect of her life and felt unfulfilled in her career.

Tori's journey led her to create Hype Fitness, a fitness studio that focuses on personalized training and recovery. She believes in understanding each client's individual needs and goals, creating workout programs tailored to them, and regularly checking in on their progress. Hype Fitness combines strength and resistance training with recovery options like saunas and ice baths to ensure clients feel good both mentally and physically.

One of the key takeaways from our conversation was the importance of finding an accountability partner when starting or restarting your fitness journey. Tori emphasized the significance of speaking about your goals and intentions with a fitness professional who can guide you based on your unique circumstances, medical history, and fitness background.

We also discussed the idea of training in alignment with your menstrual cycle. Tori highlighted that it's not about following strict rules but rather listening to your body and doing what feels right for you on a given day. Your energy levels and preferences can change throughout your cycle, and tuning into these changes can help you create a more balanced and sustainable fitness routine.

Tori shared her thoughts on some fitness trends, particularly the reliance on smartwatches to measure calorie burn during workouts. She emphasized that these devices often focus solely on cardiovascular exercise and don't account for the muscular strain that can be equally important in a workout. Tori encouraged people to focus on how they feel after a workout rather than relying solely on calorie burn metrics.

Finally, Tori expressed her excitement about the upcoming opening of Hype Fitness in Cape Town City Center. She described the various services they will offer, including group classes, open gym access,
