Carrying Cord: A USF Football Pod

Career Day (UTSA Recap)

Pookah & Red Season 2 Episode 24

Send us whatever is on your mind.

Is it Career day where we learn about daddy who plays football? or Career day where the opposing team sets new records for their football career? USF football in the giving spirit already, gives Frank Harris the ultimate Senior Day send off. The guys mail it on this one as we're ready for next week already. Apologies in advance for some rough edits, don't come at us.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

And with 900 yards. That's another USF record Set by number 38 Shaw.

Track 1:

Uh, ma'am. Well, that's nice. I don't think that was the record day. We were gonna lead off the pod with.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Welcome to Caring Cord where it absolutely sucks to be right.

Track 1:

We were 49 to 21 right down the middle of our two predictions.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

It's, it's tough be wrong. You would, you do. But there's that part of you that just knows you're a hundred percent right, like losing this game. Even, even in the moments where we thought we weren't going

Track 1:

How come we're wrong sometimes when we know we're losing, but we're never wrong when never wrong when we know we're gonna lose, but we are wrong sometimes when we

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Well that's cause we're USF fans. We have been,

Track 1:

Uh,

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

I don't know, our brains have been scrambled, but we knew this one went pretty much exactly

Track 1:

It did, but the problem is, is we scored first, and so then that throws all my expectations right out the, oh, we're winning. We're winning. Fuck everything. I said, Nope, nope. We're gonna beat this team.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

lead. It's like, I'd imagine this is what it's like if you ever go to one of those greased up pig wrestling things and like you manage to hold onto the pig, you grab it like early on, like pretty early and then you just have to hold on. But that bad boy is moving. UTSA

Track 1:

God.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

that's two guys. told you about'em. They had career days. One of them though, or both

Track 1:

Oh yeah. No. UCSA had 21 senior we, it was senior nights. We got to watch'em all

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Oh,

Track 1:

out. 20 fucking one of

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

amazing. How are you a full college career and somehow have a career night in

Track 1:

couldn't have been scripted better for Frank Harris career night, last home game. It's been seven years for him. And then he gets to not only have the career day, he gets to do the old, basketball, sub you off in the middle of the game so the crowd can give you a round of applause as you walk

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

That's brutal. That's brutal. I mean, good for him. I'm glad we could provide him with that. USF is,

Track 1:

Right. We knew it was coming from him and CFUs. we highlighted'em both in the preview. Just gotta toot our own horn some more.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Yeah, if you haven't listened to that, if you need the receipts, go back. That's probably one of my favorite episodes of the season. I don't know why. It Um, you know, it also feels really good watching other people make fools of themselves. Like the, apparently the guy walking around walk.

Track 1:

Yeah, we, Hey, you warned me about the river walk. I did not fall for the siren call of any, uh, soldiers around there.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Smart, smart

Track 1:

But, it was nice. It was quaint little walk because saw a lot of boats going by. A lot of ducks. I did not fall in, had a little beer. It was beautiful weather. But yeah. Then I also saw some USF fan in full pads and a black face paint walking around it. Two in the afternoon. do you buddy, I guess whoever you are out there? it's a no for me though. Uh.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

asking for it. that's that's the decoy, that's the one USF fans send out. So he catches all the strays from the UTSA fans while we're just like sneaking in to watch the game,

Track 1:

but he was living proof that there were more than just me and Kay there. It was actually a pretty good showing of USF fans. So yeah, we had a nice little section. one of the u you know, speaking to UTSA hate, I think one of the. People on Twitter actually said, USF brought more than North Texas did for their conference USA championship last year. So, so that's, and UTSA did it up with the production in the Alamo Dome. It was well done. You know, obviously they had everything going with their PA guy hyping everything up for senior night and everything. The only thing I would say is if US F's ever coming off. Back to back 10 win seasons with multiple one one conference championship and potentially playing for a second. I would hope it's a little more full. I, no, I think it was more than, you know, they probably announced same as USF 30,000 or something, but I wouldn't think it 15,000 in there.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

I mean, the the Alamo Dome is tough. It's not like Ray J where, you know, there's a lot of, there's a lot of parking around it. You just kind of drive out there. The Alamo Dome is smack dab in the middle of downtown San Antonio, but not smack dab in the middle of campus. Campus is actually pretty far away. Driving around San Antonio is not anything like They, they're, they're really not doing themselves any favors in terms of making it easy to attend those games. And it's not like there's a lot of great parking around there. You probably to the Alamo Dome. it's it's, it's

Track 1:

It's like right under a interstate or something

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

It's right next to the interstate, like legitimately right downtown. Um, so not surprised that not many people made it, but USF fans still turned out. Look at that. You Hotter Knot. The uniform. why are you making that face in me, man? Yeah. I'm not quitting, man.

Track 1:

to the bit. I do, I do. I mean,

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

I can keep it rolling. It was nice

Track 1:

Yeah, it was, I had no complaints. Uniforms look clean, looked solid, recognizable, didn't make us

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

didn't we, didn't we tell Lee didn't

Track 1:

I don't remember for the road. I want, I like the all greens

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

home

Track 1:

home games, that's the more important thing. I don't really give a shit about road uniforms. road uniforms. should be basic. Yeah, because you're the road team. You let the other

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

let them do their thing? Well, that's why you keep getting bitched on long plays.'cause you're trying to let the other team do their own thing. You need to carve some space out for But.

Track 1:

What people really came to see was Lee's. That's what the, at least that's what I was there for.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

he, he always is wearing like the jet black. he just,

Track 1:

I think he's been wearing the same fit since like

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

yeah, he's like the Secret Service. He's kind of like right there. He is always in the same uniform. He's always got that earpiece in. He's right next to coach, just on.

Track 1:

with the spare

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

spare headset. Got some tools, got some snacks in the fanny pack.

Track 1:

fanny pack. Yeah. I just, with all the other offense coordinator dudes in the wiggles colors, I just want leads to be out there looking sharp. Make it a little easier to

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

that is, that's true. Like undone. Where's, where's the dude in the

Track 1:

Mm-Hmm. Mm-Hmm.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

green. I need him. I need'em to fix my shit real quick. You know what, there's, you know what? We're not fixing my predictions.'cause they were right.

Track 1:

If only you were as good of equipment guy as you

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

I was, I was a, I was a damn good equipment guy. Thank you very much. Damn. I mean, the, there really is no criteria.

Track 1:

you rocked the cross shoulder bag full of

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Nobody else. I carried cord. I had the screws up there setting up the booth. I could do it all. I could do it all. Just like picking the preseason. I've only had one miss so far in my predictions.

Track 1:

It's impressive. It's,

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Do you, do you know who it was? I think it's the one that we both got wrong. It was FAU and then we shouldn't have lost that one. The absolute trouncing at the hands of FAU. How does that even happen? Why are we even talking about that? That's old news. We're moving on. We're moving on to what we saw in this game. What did we see? We're gonna try something a little bit different too. We're gonna sprinkle in some of the key takeaways with what we saw. Let's see if we can make this bad boy flow a because We are Creatives.

Track 1:

We're working on our process, just

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

We we are

Track 1:

week 12. We're still trying to get better out here

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Damn.

Track 1:

across the

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

waited all season for this all season. Can you

Track 1:

We could be phoning in this episode right now, we could say, Hey, no one cares what happened in week 11. We lost, and anything. Only thing people care about is week 12. Are we gonna

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Are we gonna get it?

Track 1:

Screw the UTSA recap, but no,

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

here Because it's important. Because what we saw at the UTSA game that was important. I think you said that maybe this is this is the foundation of what this team needs to be.

Track 1:

Right. We talked about UTSA kind of modeling themselves as they're building a program off of USF. Well, now, USF needs to turn around and model themselves a little bit off of UTSA here. I mean, having a team stick together like that for, you know. Four to seven years, depending on how long your seniors have been there. and build a foundation and build upon that and have a team identity and, you know, steadily increase your wins to where you're then consistently having success back to back years.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

That's a culture. That is a culture.

Track 1:

yeah, exactly. That's what we're looking for. and because of that, I mean, it was pretty obvious that Better team won out there. It's not like we. Pissed the game away because we were favored or anything.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

we definitely weren't, I definitely wasn't.

Track 1:

yeah, I mean, look, my favorite stat of this game is Byron Brown was 12 when Frank Harris started playing for UTSA.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Is that for real? I thought they were making that up. That's real. Oh my god,

Track 1:

that's real man.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

But even with that, even with all that happened, better team did win. They executed better. I mean, just, we made the same mistakes. USF has been making

Track 1:

they're a well-oiled machine where, I don't know.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Um,

Track 1:

A puncher's chance out there, you could see us, we could throw, we could land a few blows. We could stay with them for a few rounds, but just round, over, round, we just break down and start making mistakes eventually and just fall down, literally

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

literally with that let's get into it.'cause the offense, I mean, they, they started out. If they come out and score first, we're winning. We're winning the, we're winning the game. Stop the count.

Track 1:

We're winning, we're driving. I mean, so the second drive really only stalled because of a couple penalties. Then we score again on the third drive. So that's two weeks in a row. We've got the bad starts figured out. We're up, we're scoring, we're not going down 14 to nothing. Now we gotta figure out what happens in the rest of the game again. yeah. the. The offense is mystery to me because it works so well for some drives and then it's three and out repeatedly for so many other drives.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

could it could it just be that maybe the receivers just aren't getting the separation? Could it just be that like. We just don't have the athletes that we need, that guys are just making, I don't even know, I'm just I'm just grasping at straws here because like you feel like you get some great production. Yusef Terry, where did this guy come from? And all of a sudden he's catching bombs and now you can't find anything from Chare Brown. Can't find, I mean, Atkins is the one consistent thing on that offense. You sometimes get run production, other times you don't get anything. Sometimes you're running the shit outta Byron Brown. Other times you can't go anywhere.

Track 1:

It really doesn't. It really doesn't. And I feel like I know Pace is gonna be a part of this offense. I'm not

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Mm-Hmm.

Track 1:

pace out, but I feel like so much of when we run that quick, it's three and out before we've even had a chance to analyze

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

What's going on? Yeah. Yeah. And it's a great point. Like it has its benefit in trying to catch the defense off guard, but now they've had 11 weeks to prepare for a team that's gonna run this fast. Like they know we're going this fast. We're not catching anyone off guard. They're saying they come down the field. This is how you line up

Track 1:

And Coach talks about the third down efficiency being so bad. It was. But that's set up by where we are behind the sticks on first and second down. there were six straight drives we had in there where we went three or four and out kind of after it was 14. 14 to when it then became like 35, 14, or maybe even 42, 14. and only one of those where we in third or seven in less

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Wow.

Track 1:

like, so we're not set up good

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

And that's the thing, you're, you're trying to force these third down plays. We talked about this in the past, and you're gonna make mistakes and you're expecting guy to make a play when we don't exactly have the consistent play makers. We don't have the guys like CFUs. We don't have the guys like Rock Taylor. We don't have the guys like the, these receivers we played this season who are gonna go up and get the ball consistently. Outrun dudes. We don't have the backups apparently, that are gonna have career days when they just step on the field and all of a sudden start

Track 1:

Yeah. Hey, and we see those guys. Are those guys. really that good? Or we just

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

It doesn't matter. Doesn't absolutely doesn't matter. Uh,'cause it up in points and I mean that's that's the, that's just the pass offense. The rush offense is what is like probably even more confusing to me because at least know on pass offense what we got. We got Sean Atkins and every once in a while he gets some other folks.

Track 1:

No, the rush offense is a big part of that. Too many zero yard gains. Not setting us up in the early Downs spec. We'll have to do a deeper dive on offense over the off season or something. feels like, to me, that's where the offense can make the biggest leap of improvement is I don't know that we have. A good enough design in the run game. I know we're facing talent deficiencies on

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Well, that's what I, was about to say, like, is

Track 1:

that. but it's still, we're facing a lot of light boxes. We've got numbers, you've got especially got numbers when you've added in

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Mm-Hmm.

Track 1:

QB run. And too often we have the numbers that say you should be able to get a gain and we don't. and I don't know whether that's mis blocking assignments, just guys getting beat. What it takes. It takes a lot more to break that down and really spend time

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Sure, sure.

Track 1:

But

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Regardless, zero yard gains line struggle, and you're just not gonna score points. And you need, if they know, they don't have to worry about the run. Your pass game's shot because they're gonna defend it all day long. And they had the defense.

Track 1:

it wasn't 50 points. Gotta give'em credit. We credit's due.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

well, thank goodness they didn't get divid.

Track 1:

a lot of people are screaming for Todd Orlando's head. Personally, I actually liked the game plan. We lived by the Blitz and die by it. We put a guys in a lot of positions to make plays. That's what you, that's what you asked for as a defense coordinator, right? Like you can't go out there and do it yourself. But if you guys put people in position and let them make a play and. If they didn't make'em

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

it's, I mean, just before this we were running through plays and actually watching, and you had guys like Evans. You have Evans in position. You have Gordon in position, like you have Stokes potentially in position. But then it's just like they don't make the play or someone on the offense comes over and makes a damn good block, and then he's the only person in the area, right? Because nobody else is where they're supposed to be. God only knows where Barry Hill's at. God only knows where Will Jones is at. Just running around in circles. They're like the, their controller got disconnected. They're just running in circles in the backfield. Nobody

Track 1:

Yeah. but I, but still, I like, I prefer that than we're gonna sit back in coverage and we're just gonna watch'em slice this apart and. Guys are just gonna be running free and we're gonna blow coverage and all that kinda stuff. At least in this situation, it's like, man on man, let a guy go out there play, and if he gets beat, he gets beat. You can live and you can coach with that and you can go and take that and build off of it.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

it's, it's interesting too because just a couple seasons ago, people were screaming about USF plays two soft coverage. It's like they're playing prevent, it's like everyone's five to 10 yards off the ball. We're constantly getting beat. Our dbs are constantly getting beat, and now it's like, okay, we got guys in position, but they're not making the plays. We don't need to call for Todd Orlando's head yet. Let's, let's let's recruit some talent. Let's get this scheme working. Because I mean, if you, if you have athletes, You can live by the blitz'cause you'll have everyone covered.

Track 1:

Mm-Hmm.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

That's the idea. That's what we're working on. And we got some athletes coming in and we've got some defensive secondary folks coming in. Hopefully

Track 1:

We do hopefully. So, yeah, passing. Passing. We didn't get the pass rush off of the four man rush. So we blitz. We only got one sack. We did get some decent pressure. Problem is we'd get pressure if Frank ish would break the

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Yeah,

Track 1:

and extend the play, and then that's when your coverage breaks down. run Defense wasn't too bad except for when we had to defend the QB run. that was god awful. We apparently don't know how to tackle

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Here's an extra runner. What do we do?

Track 1:

one small glimmer of positive is we did stop them both times on fourth down. So when we knew it was short yardage and had to get the stop, we could man up and stop'em inside the trenches. That's good. That's something to build

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

awesome that that hypes the team up. That's like goal line

Track 1:

You know who else was awesome?

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

me,

Track 1:

Our Ozzy punter, Andrew Stokes

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

That dude can boot the

Track 1:

would've had two inside the five yard line if it wasn't for bullshit fucking penalty. but still probably his best game.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

I've always thought he was, he was a great punter. Other than that special teams, it's, it's just nothing.

Track 1:

Right? At least look, that's better. Neutral is better than

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

At a certain point, neutral becomes negative. I need you to do something to help us along because like, you actually start hurting

Track 1:

We will talk about the penalties later in our John McDade segment, but they weren't the difference in the game. They weren't pretty, they sure didn't help, but we're not getting started on

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

that's that's too early.'cause first, hey. Should we fire Coattail Stole us yet? Or Todd Orlando?

Track 1:

Oh, Yeah. that's, let's go into that instead. That's, that's even better to

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

That's way better.

Track 1:

The authoritative source on this topic has spoken. Joey Knight has tweeted out that The honeymoon. is over for Coach

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

The honeymoon.

Track 1:

that's, that's all we need

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

It is. It is a five and six season. We won one game last season. People. We are the worst fucking fans ever. We really are

Track 1:

We're about to, yeah, we're about to. I procreate on the wedding night right now. If we get a bowl game, we're not even in the honeymoon

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

everybody. Have we forgotten where this team came from? Look at Colorado. Everyone was complaining about not getting prime. Right? Look at that program right about now. The absolute implosion. Look at what Coach Golich has done. y Oh. And he didn't like, he brought in a whole bunch of new guys, but he essentially has instituted culture. He's instituted a scheme. He's brought his folks in and it's it's working objectively. You can say it's working. We've won five games this season. Yeah. We lost six. Have some of those six losses been big? Yeah, sure. Great. But we lost how many last season? 11. So let's just let's just marinate on that for a little bit.

Track 1:

Don't have to remind me

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

always something there to remind me.

Track 1:

I fully, recall the temple loss again last year. Now, now that we've cleanse that demon

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

it's come at you,

Track 1:

face it.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

exercise the demons, There's four quarters

Track 1:

Oh, I thought you were gonna introduce a new, uh,

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

No. Yeah. Speaking of exercising,

Track 1:

recap. Brought to Peloton

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

on the Peloton after this, if any. Yeah, if anyone wants to follow me on there.

Track 1:

You do the you do the bike,

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

I'm, I'm gonna do the bike, I'm gonna get on the bike tonight, do some hitting hills. I mean, it's only seven o'clock and I haven't eaten dinner yet and didn't. Whole day of work, but it's all right.

Track 1:

Intermittent fasting, man,

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

That's what I'm, that's what I'm doing. Yeah. You know what's not intermittently fasting? our offense. No. Good. Well, yeah.'cause they eat for 30 minutes and then sleep for the next three hours.

Track 1:

Right. First quarter, boom. Score. First seven to seven. After the first quarter, let's go. We're in this thing even deep into the second quarter. It's 1414, still fighting. And then like we said, the offense just goes to sleep. Six straight drives Of, nothing.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Of, of three and out, a four and

Track 1:

Not a six, not not a first, down for six

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

that's, and that right there is. Demoralizing. Not just for an offense, but for a defense.'cause it's like we're doing our part, right? We are a hundred percent like, yeah, they're scoring, but they're a great team. We're, we're, we're holding them. No, this is not getting outta hand. We need you to come in and do your part apparently.'cause we don't talk about special teams. That's something we, don't say on the sideline. So we need the, the the offense to come out and do the thing, and they just don't, and

Track 1:

it is. I don't have the answer for that. And because with all of that, with offense going to sleep for half the game defense giving up all these missed tackles and everything, still in this game 1 41 left in the first half, it's only

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

that's it. It's just, that's a that's a one one score game.

Track 1:

One score game. Getting ready to go into halftime. UTSA's got a third and 14 on their own. Eight. We should be getting the ball back with a chance to go tie it up before halftime. Run our two minute offense. Probably get the ball at our own 50, maybe 40 with the punt, right? Like let's go instead.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

it's.

Track 1:

That's where the defense, maybe they've just been out there for too long. Demoralized, like you said, from the offense, not doing anything, but you give up a horrible QB draw run conversion on third and 14 with bad, contained, bad angles, guys getting run over at the sticks by quarterback

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

ends coming back to get blocks, and that's the thing at third and 14, they're probably thinking It's pass, right? We're getting off this field. Everybody drops back into coverage. Nobody's around. You put one guy on the quarterback and he takes a pretty poor angle and then gets just, should have been one hell of a block by the tight end. But he, he had mercy on him. And that's the thing.

Track 1:

You are not

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

No,'cause,

Track 1:

guys anymore. Coming

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

that would've been a deep, that that would've been a cream. He would've been creamed. but that's the piece. Then it's like the defense is like, what do we have to do? We were supposed to be off the fields and they take that drive and they score. They drive all the way down the field after that and they score.

Track 1:

Yeah. So then it's a two score game going at halftime and they get the ball coming out at halftime. And then, Hey, we're still fighting though. We get an INT. Oh no we didn't.'cause we fucking two hand shoved the guy.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

I mean, that was pretty egregious too. Like he's up in the air and like just, Nope. Barry Hill said, no, you don't

Track 1:

Yeah, that was a rough one. But the thing that still piss me off about that I, that pass interference on the call is the refs who are right there aren't calling it, they're kinda letting it go as two guys going up for the, yeah, Barry Hill definitely interferes with him as he's going up for the ball. but he's also going up and fighting for the ball and it's a bad pass and a bad situ. It's not like it was a clean route and everything. So refs kind of let it go a little bit more in that situation of, it's kind of a jump ball, almost Hail Mary ish. and it's like the ref from the far middle of the field who's 30 yards away coming in, throwing his flag on that of, and I think that's what goldish was really pissed about, is it's the same'cause he is the same guy who called the O offensive pass for getting into the, the reffing

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

please please don't. Not yet.

Track 1:

he's just the same guy. so that's what got goldish was real fired up about that one, and I'm still happy to see it. I like that he gets after the, refs.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Too bad the the offense can't get after the refs because they don't do shit

Track 1:

I, right, so again, missed opportunity goes from an INT or if that's just even a knockdown that was third down. So goes from defense, getting the ball. They go and score touchdowns now with two kind of changed momentum plays there. It goes from potentially a tie game to we're down three scores, as we

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Yes.

Track 1:

second half.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

And that's, that's where we shine, baby. That's right where we shine. And by shine I mean completely Shit. The bit.

Track 1:

Right. That's just where we know we're in a bad situation there. Hey, we actually do get a touchdown and we Kind of, you know, 42, 21, can we claw back in defense still out there. They get another stop offense goes three and Audi, you know, like it's just can't put it together. I mean, and then fourth quarter 49. They add another one late 49, 21. We do actually get two long drives in the fourth quarter, like a 10 and 12 play drive. But neither one results in points because we're just floundering, putting everything we can out there kind of. at that point.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

I mean, you love to you love to see that there's no quit, but also like at that point it's the, it's over. It's over. I mean, I don't want the team to quit. I'm not saying I want them to just like turn it in, but it is just, golly, when you get down like that, why three touchdowns and that's it. That's the only offensive production in the entire game. Three touchdowns. It's like we're Iowa.

Track 1:

whoa. Their game plan

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Yeah,

Track 1:

one touchdown a day.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

What was their score like 15, 13 against Illinois or some shit? It was wild.

Track 1:

Yeah. it was three, two for a while,

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

amazing. That's, that's just some good shit. That's the thing. How three touchdowns just ain't gonna do it. Against these teams that are apparently putting up 40 to 50 points.

Track 1:

It is not. And for that reason, because of that, I don't think we even have a Mac growthy. Holy shit. How do you do

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

I don't think we do. We, we definitely have a Matt Hill Player of the Week award'cause we lost, so it's bad players. Even though Matt Hill, he did have I think he had a penalty or something somewhere in there.

Track 1:

I didn't notice

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

He was out there. He was out there on special teams. I think he had some sort of some sort of penalty

Track 1:

Oh. He had, uh, I know exactly what penalty we had.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

we'll get to it.

Track 1:

it. I gotcha.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

I think he had a penalty, but mine, mine goes to the entire third down defense. I don't, there's not any specific player.'cause you all are in bad position. There's probably one dude who's in the position to make a play and then he doesn't. And then everybody else is, God only knows where. You're not paying attention. You're not looking in the backfield, you're not trying to see what's actually developing with the play. You just look lost. And then they get this huge chunk play like a QB draw goes for 14 yards, 15 yards. They get the first down and then you're demoralized. You gotta stay out there for another three or downs, potentially more. And it always ended up being more and they ended up scoring. Gotta clean up the third down defense to everyone out there on the field for third down. And then this has been a theme in the other games as well.'cause we've gotten lucky on some third downs where it hasn't necessarily been a good defensive play. It's just been a receiver dropping the ball. we're like, yeah, we stopped them, we stop. Shit they stopped themselves and we just happened to be on the field when it happened.

Track 1:

That's the favorite play in football is when the DBS sheath and his sword celebrating.'cause the wide receiver dropped the ball over there when he

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Look at what I did coach.

Track 1:

Yeah. Hey, you're not wrong. On the third down defense, the only thing you're rung on there is that it doesn't always have to be four plays or more after the conversion.'cause sometimes They just,

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

They just, yeah, they just go ahead. Oh, we'll just end this bad boy.

Track 1:

my guy, he was one of the culprits of your third down defense young guy, kind of thrown into the spotlight last couple weeks, trial by fire to

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Hmm.

Track 1:

wared 26. he got burnt quite a bit. He was going against a good wide receiver. He was on CFIs quite a bit. He got burnt, but he was out there fighting man coverage a lot. Hey, you get beat sometimes. He did still have four pass breakups. He was battling, Yeah, but not a good day overall for him. It's one he can learn from. And look, I don't mind if you're getting the bad player of the week award for one

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

No.

Track 1:

especially as a young player starting playing a lot of meaningful minutes, shit's gonna happen. You're gonna get beat when you're going against other

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Absolutely. Some of the the best players on that team, right? Like you're getting, you're getting matched up. One-on-One against their best receiver.

Track 1:

Mm-Hmm.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Yeah. You're gonna, I take it as a learning experience, son, get on the jugs. Not that that would necessarily help, but you know who the jugs might help actually, is the refs. If we just pointed at their fucking face, turn up to a hundred and launch that bad boy.

Track 1:

this was as close to John McDade levels as we've been in quite,

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

I mean, they've been missing holding calls all season, right? But they've kind of been doing that to both sides and. There've been some like shaky ones, but this was bad.

Track 1:

This was real bad, and I'm gonna preface it by saying, I still don't think we're in the game without these things, but it just really takes you out of it. it. gives you a, it's too easy to blame it on it and lose the momentum because some of these, we talked about some of the timing of when these happened, and it goes from a momentum kind of stealing situation, right.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

I mean, I, I liken it to you get food poisoning so you got really bad diarrhea. But the food you got food poisoning from is like the spiciest food you've ever eaten. So not only are you shit liquid, but it's fire liquid at the same time. Taking the spicy food away doesn't take away the diarrhea. It just makes it a little easier, if you will. It's just straight facts, man. I don't know how

Track 1:

I mean, even as I'm getting older here, I've learned, sometimes, you know, I really gotta consider, Is the spicy food

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

it worth it?'cause it's, it's still coming. I mean,

Track 1:

It's delicious coming in, but it's, it's a lot more

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

it hurts. I ain't got just a permanent hemorrhoid just there forever. You know? Who else is a permanent hemorrhoid? No, they can't do that.'cause then I won't be able to sit, you know, who else is a permanent hemorrhoid? refs give me, gimme what you got.

Track 1:

I got a bunch for you here. So first one, offensive pass interference. I think it's on the second drive. Things

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

We're rolling. We're winning.

Track 1:

This is, this essentially kills our second drive of the game. I think it's on Simmons. He runs just like a corner route and run a hitch underneath. And like he just does like a swim move

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

To get around the guy. Yeah.

Track 1:

the db who's covering him to go around him and they think he's blocking out there. That's where goal is start.'cause it's the same fucking ref from the, whoever it is, the back judge in the middle of the field over there. Same guy throwing this flag all day long. He calls an OPI ruins that drive. I actually went outta order here because on their first touchdown drive, you gotta see this play. I don't know, everybody probably already saw it, but they miss an easy offensive pass interference. The dude literally grabs RTB by the face mask, rips him down,

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Yeah.

Track 1:

his helmet goes flying off for 10 yards, and the guy, and like the guy's walking into the end zone. And I'm like, oh, what happened? Our, our DB fell down. Like I'm there with the eye

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Mm-Hmm.

Track 1:

figure out what happened. You know, I'm watching other things and I'm like, oh man, that guy must have slipped and fallen down not wearing his helmet correctly. And it just falls off. No, the thing gets ripped off the guy's head and I can see him talking to the ref afterwards, like, and I don't know what the ref's like, oh, I, you know, I looked like your helmet just fell off, buddy. Sorry. I don't

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

happens all the time out here, son. And he's like, WTF mate.

Track 1:

Past interference was definitely the theme of this one. we talked, we've talked to ad nauseum about the dam interception that was past interference. It probably was past interference, but just with the way all these other calls were called or not called, it kind of feels like you're owed one there. just kind of

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

that's the thing. It's, it's like, gimme, gimme a freebie. Gimme at least one. Help me out here. Help me.

Track 1:

And then the last one, this is your Matt Hill one, was on the punt that was down inside at the three yard line, and the punt returner isn't even trying to catch the ball. He's 10 yards away from where the ball lands, pretending like he's gonna catch it. Not even pretending like he's catching it, just like running off. And Matt Hill just like doesn't tackle him, just gives him like a one hand little push in the shoulder and they call it unnecessary roughness. And I, I don't know if they called it catch interference in the end or just unnecessary rough. it was not, it was nothing.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

It was nothing.

Track 1:

It's also unnecessary for Matt Hill, but

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Well then it meets the definition, it's literally in the words unnecessary roughness, and the reps got together and was like, was that unnecessary? Yeah, it was. It was

Track 1:

It was unnecessary. I would debate whether it

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Well, you know, it's a it's a kinder, gentler, NCAA

Track 1:

Yeah. who's not kinder or gentler?

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

He's just screaming

Track 1:

gonna have to rename the, it's gonna be getting righted. It's no longer getting

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

get right son because he just, I think every game he runs somebody over. I'm gonna start calling him cream corn'cause he is, somebody's getting creamed cream of cream a quan soup. Mm.

Track 1:

go.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Beautiful.

Track 1:

I think he just wins it by default every week. Don't you need to look for other hits?

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

somebody. Did we get the name of the guy he he ran over? Yeah.

Track 1:

I didn't.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

I'm usually better about that, but I'm failing this week.

Track 1:

Pro The process is breaking down. We are

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Oh no.

Track 1:

oh. Better, better end this quick. What other segments we got? Uh,

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

Dad.

Track 1:

d

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

it.

Track 1:

again, too easy. This one is every Miss Tackle you could just do a gag reel of dag gamt

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

am telling you, man,

Track 1:

1, 2, 3, 4 touchdowns of theirs where we had guys and we just couldn't make

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

you, I would love, love, love, love, and maybe the university can look at doing something like this where fans can pay or can enter a raffle to be in the booth. Because I would've loved to be in the booth for some of these, like where they have the right, the right play calls in, everybody's in the right position, everything goes well, and then it happens and it's like just you hear this collective groan from the booth and we're, oh, and then maybe you hear someone mumble in their breath, God dammit, just,

Track 1:

Oh, I know Barry Hill was getting

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

oh yeah,

Track 1:

some coaches on that, on that 85 yard

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

God.

Track 1:

what was the one we were watching right before? Oh, the Frank Harris 40 yard touchdown, where we had two guys dive at his feet and he spins around. And in the time that he's coming to a complete stop spinning, no one else has realized that he's running with the football

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

everybody is on the sideline for some reason. I don't think there's, I think there's actually only six people on the field for that play.'cause that's what it looks like. It just doesn't make God, man, I would love to be be in there to see they probably had to clear out all the throw bullshit There's like, like, you know how you baby proof a house Like they had to USF proof a booth because it's like, ah, we threw a graduate assistant out the, the window landed.

Track 1:

There's nothing more durable than the, old, like three inch, three ring binders that they're using up there that are just getting smacked around.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

So we haven't talked about the flying three ring binder since the incident. That's brutal. Speaking of brutal, we couldn't find a dumb tweet of the week this week. Everybody's wise in and up.

Track 1:

We're sure they're out there. We're sure. We're sure. You're still being dumb. We know you're still tweeting,

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

just,

Track 1:

but we're just moving on. We're putting this one behind us. We're ready. We're not gonna linger.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

it's time. is time. For the last regular season, game of the season. It has been a long time since we were actually watching this with any sort of hope or like really any sort of interest outside of just like, let's see what this team's got. Of course, you know, the last game of the season, the regular season, the past couple have, you know, meant something for a different reason, but really it comes down to one. And when is the last time that the last game of our season actually meant something?

Track 1:

Oh, you're, wait, you were asking me. I was supposed to have that stat ready?

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

No. No, man. Because outside of trying to beat sea, the last game of the regular season hasn't meant something for us in a long ass time.

Track 1:

for sure. I haven't been this excited since, well, I don't know. I don't think I've ever been this

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

shows. I think the fans recognize the

Track 1:

Charlotte baby.

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:

It's Charlotte, ed, Ray J. Me either. I don't know The last time I was this excited. Tune in later this week for what hopefully won't be our last preview of the season.'cause we are, we're previewing a a bowl game. Dad, GAMT. I feel it. Catch us on all the socials. Kay is rocking out Twitter, loving the work he's doing out out there.

Track 1:

getting

pookah_1_11-20-2023_185235:
