something? 00:00:58.880 --> 00:01:15.840 Is that and then thinking back over the Joshua series, um, a few weeks ago in our four o'clock service, Pastor David Wade was speaking on a passage, he says, This is the most important passage in Joshua. 00:01:16.719 --> 00:01:24.000 Okay, and then two weeks ago, Scott says, This is the climax of the whole Joshua series. 00:01:24.319 --> 00:01:25.519 Chapter eight. 00:01:26.159 --> 00:01:31.680 So I'm the Vegemite in an Australian sandwich and the leftover from Joshua, but it's gonna be okay, okay? 00:01:31.840 --> 00:01:32.959 It's gonna be alright. 00:01:33.200 --> 00:01:49.680 Because it might not be the most important, it might not be the climax, but I think actually chapter 14, which we're gonna look at today, is actually potentially the most exciting because we're looking at slaying giants and we're looking at taking possession of what God has promised you. 00:01:49.760 --> 00:01:51.040 So it's gonna be alright, okay? 00:01:51.200 --> 00:01:52.400 It'll be fine. 00:01:52.879 --> 00:02:03.519 As we journey through the book of Joshua, we've seen how God enabled the Israelites to possess the land that he'd promised Abraham 400 years before. 00:02:03.680 --> 00:02:10.000 Uh, and we can see that actually they they could have done it 40 years earlier, but they didn't. 00:02:10.240 --> 00:02:17.360 They sent 12 spies in to spy out the land, and when they came back, ten of the spies gave a bad report about the land. 00:02:17.439 --> 00:02:20.479 And in Numbers 13, I think we'll have it on the screen. 00:02:20.879 --> 00:02:26.000 Numbers 13, starting at verse 27, it says this, this is what they reported to Moses. 00:02:26.479 --> 00:02:28.560 We went to the land where you sent us. 00:02:28.719 --> 00:02:31.919 It really is a land flowing with milk and honey. 00:02:32.080 --> 00:02:39.199 Here's some of its true, but the people who live there are strong, and the cities have walls and are very large. 00:02:39.439 --> 00:02:42.159 We even saw the descendants of Anak there. 00:02:42.319 --> 00:02:54.639 The Amalekites live in the Negev, the Hittites, Jebuzites, and Amorites live in the mountain region, and the Canaanites live along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and all along the Jordan River. 00:02:54.960 --> 00:02:57.919 Caleb told the people to be quiet and listen to Moses. 00:02:58.319 --> 00:03:02.639 Caleb said, Let's go now and possess take possession of the land. 00:03:02.719 --> 00:03:05.199 We should be more than able to conquer it. 00:03:05.360 --> 00:03:10.400 But the men who'd gone with him said, We can't attack those people, they're too strong for us. 00:03:10.639 --> 00:03:15.280 So they began to spread lies among the Israelites about the land they'd --> 00:03:40.879 The people were absolutely on the verge of seeing everything that God had promised them. 00:03:43.120 --> 00:03:45.280 But they wanted to go back to Egypt. 00:03:45.759 --> 00:03:53.840 They had short memories about how terrible it was, how badly treated they'd been in Egypt, and how amazingly God had brought them out. 00:03:54.000 --> 00:03:59.280 And Joshua and Caleb were the only two spies to actually give a good report. 00:03:59.439 --> 00:04:01.120 They said the land is good. 00:04:01.680 --> 00:04:09.039 They didn't focus on the giants, they didn't focus on the problems, they focused on what God had promised. 00:04:09.759 --> 00:04:16.319 But once the people decided they weren't going to go in then, God basically said, Well, you won't go in at all then. 00:04:16.639 --> 00:04:24.560 And for 40 years that generation wandered around in the desert, and none of them, apart from Caleb and Joshua, entered the land. 00:04:24.639 --> 00:04:25.680 Not even Moses. 00:04:26.240 --> 00:04:27.759 And what a tragedy that was. 00:04:27.839 --> 00:04:30.079 They missed a moment in God. 00:04:30.399 --> 00:04:33.920 And as a result of it, they never possessed what God had for them. 00:04:34.240 --> 00:04:37.199 But Joshua and Caleb weren't like the others. 00:04:37.600 --> 00:04:44.399 Caleb's name actually means wholehearted or faithful or devoted. 00:04:44.879 --> 00:04:49.040 And it's very closely linked to the Hebrew word for dog. 00:04:49.839 --> 00:04:53.759 And I guess some of those things actually describe what a good dog's like, isn't it? 00:04:54.079 --> 00:04:56.959 They're faithful, they're devoted, they follow their master. 00:04:57.120 --> 00:04:58.800 And that's what Caleb did. 00:04:59.040 --> 00:05:02.399 It wasn't just his name, that's what he did. 00:05:02.639 --> 00:05:08.160 Six times in the Old Testament, we're told that he wholeheartedly served the Lord. 00:05:08.480 --> 00:05:11.920 Moses said it about him, God said it about him. 00:05:12.160 --> 00:05:21.040 And in Numbers 14, God said that Caleb had a different spirit in him to the rest of the Israelites, because he had God's spirit in him. 00:05:21.680 --> 00:05:25.519 And Caleb gave a good report because he saw with God's eyes. 00:05:25.680 --> 00:05:31.199 He saw what was potential there when those around him just saw the problems. 00:05:32.399 --> 00:05:37.040 We need to be careful, you know, of what we report we bring. 00:05:37.439 --> 00:05:51.040 Because what we say about people, or what we say about opportunities, what we say about situations, can have really positive or really negative impacts on others. 00:05:51.360 --> 00:05:59.839 You know, if those other spies had given a good report, at that moment the people of Israel would have gone in and possessed the land that God had for them. 00:06:00.160 --> 00:06:04.000 But because of the bad report, they didn't. 00:06:04.319 --> 00:06:09.040 And it turned the whole people against God, and they died in the desert as a result. 00:06:09.600 --> 00:06:16.240 But in his integrity, Caleb, when other he had faith when the others had fear. 00:06:16.720 --> 00:06:19.839 He told the truth when others lied. 00:06:20.160 --> 00:06:23.279 They said the land devours the people that live there. 00:06:23.439 --> 00:06:30.000 In the subsequent chapter, Caleb says, the giants will be Lechem to us. 00:06:30.079 --> 00:06:33.199 Now Lechem means food in Hebrew. 00:06:33.360 --> 00:06:36.240 So he's saying, the land's not going to devour us. 00:06:36.480 --> 00:06:42.160 By God's grace, we are going to devour the people and take possession of that land. 00:06:42.399 --> 00:06:53.120 And as a result of his obedience and his wholehearted service, God told Caleb that one day he would inherit the land that he had seen where the giant Anakites lived. 00:06:54.319 --> 00:06:58.399 The Israelites' disobedience meant they wandered around in the desert for 40 years. 00:06:58.560 --> 00:07:03.040 And we don't hear anything about Caleb in that 40-year period. 00:07:03.279 --> 00:07:08.720 But we have to assume that all through that time he continued to wholeheartedly serve God. 00:07:08.959 --> 00:07:15.279 And this morning I want to tell you that if God has promised you something, he doesn't forget his promises. 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:22.879 It might not happen in the time scale that you think, it might not happen in the way in which you think it will happen. 00:07:23.040 --> 00:07:26.720 But if God has said something, it will come to pass. 00:07:27.360 --> 00:07:32.160 So if you're still waiting on a promise from God to be fulfilled, take Caleb's example. 00:07:32.319 --> 00:07:38.079 Just continue to wholeheartedly serve him, and in due time it will happen. 00:07:38.959 --> 00:07:48.399 As we come to Joshua 14, there's 31 kings, 31 cities that had been destroyed, and the land given to the Israelites. 00:07:48.560 --> 00:07:52.319 And uh and our old dog Caleb comes back into the narrative. 00:07:52.560 --> 00:07:54.639 Joshua 14, and starting at verse 6. 00:07:54.720 --> 00:08:02.240 It says, A delegation from the tribe of Judah, led by Caleb, son of Jephanah the Kennesite, came to Joshua at Gilgal. 00:08:02.879 --> 00:08:11.120 Caleb said to Joshua, Remember what the Lord said to Moses, the man of God, about you and me when we were at Kadesh Barneh. 00:08:11.519 --> 00:08:17.920 I was forty years old, when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barneh to explore the land of Canaan. 00:08:18.079 --> 00:08:20.639 I returned and gave an honest report. 00:08:20.879 --> 00:08:25.199 But my brothers who went with me frightened the people from entering the promised land. 00:08:25.759 --> 00:08:29.439 For my part, I wholeheartedly followed the Lord my God. 00:08:29.680 --> 00:08:42.399 So that day Moses solemnly promised the land of Canaan on which you were just walking will be your grant of land and that of your descendants forever, because you wholeheartedly followed the Lord my God. 00:08:42.879 --> 00:08:53.840 Now as you can see, the Lord has kept me alive and well, and He's promised for all those forty-five years since Moses made this promise, even while Israel wandered in the wilderness. 00:08:54.080 --> 00:08:57.120 Today I'm eighty-five years old. 00:08:57.279 --> 00:09:05.600 I'm as strong now as I was when Moses sent me on that journey, and I can still travel and fight as well as I could then. 00:09:05.840 --> 00:09:08.879 So give me the hill country that the Lord promised me. 00:09:09.039 --> 00:09:14.320 You'll remember that as scouts we found the descendants of Anak living there in great ward towns. 00:09:14.559 --> 00:09:20.480 But if the Lord is with me, I will drive them out, just as the Lord said. 00:09:20.960 --> 00:09:26.399 So Joshua blessed Canaeb, son of Jephana, and gave Hebron as his portion of land. 00:09:26.639 --> 00:09:34.159 Hebron still belongs to the descendants of Caleb, son of Jephana, the Kenesite, because he wholeheartedly followed the Lord, the God of Israel. 00:09:34.320 --> 00:09:37.279 Previously Hebron had been called Kiriath Abba. 00:09:37.519 --> 00:09:42.320 It had been named after Abba, a great hero of the descendants of Anak. 00:09:43.360 --> 00:09:47.039 As I said, God doesn't forget his promises. 00:09:47.759 --> 00:09:58.080 Not only was Caleb wholehearted, he was a remarkable man to be able at 85 to still do what he was able to do at 40, but he credited it to God. 00:09:58.159 --> 00:10:03.679 And he recognized that it was God who would go before him and win the battles for him. 00:10:04.480 --> 00:10:15.200 So this morning, whether you're 14, whether you're 40, whether you're 85, whether you're 105, if you're breathing, God has a job for you. 00:10:16.080 --> 00:10:18.879 He's still got battles for you to win for him. 00:10:19.600 --> 00:10:23.200 Like Brendan said last week, there's a call on your life right now. 00:10:23.679 --> 00:10:28.000 And you have everything in God that you need in order to complete that. 00:10:29.759 --> 00:10:36.799 When we look back, we can see it it was fear of the giants that actually stopped the Israelites from possessing the land. 00:10:37.039 --> 00:10:43.200 And Caleb comes back 45 years later and he says, I will drive them out with God's help. 00:10:43.360 --> 00:10:45.440 And that's exactly what he did. 00:10:46.159 --> 00:10:48.639 He didn't wait for the giants to come to him. 00:10:49.200 --> 00:10:55.679 He went and dealt with what was in front of him and what God had promised him, and he took possession of it. 00:10:55.919 --> 00:10:57.519 Caleb had a different spirit. 00:10:57.600 --> 00:11:00.799 It was the Spirit of God that was in him that gave him the courage. 00:11:00.960 --> 00:11:05.039 It was the Spirit of God that gave him the eyes to see as God did. 00:11:05.200 --> 00:11:09.759 And it was by the Spirit of God he won his battles even against giants. 00:11:10.799 --> 00:11:18.720 Caleb was an ordinary man like you and I, but he wholeheartedly trusted in an extraordinary God. 00:11:18.799 --> 00:11:21.120 And that's what God calls us to do. 00:11:22.480 --> 00:11:27.039 And that starts by remembering what God has done for us in the past. 00:11:27.919 --> 00:11:34.879 It's really important to, when we face new challenges or we face new situations, remember what God has done for us in the past. 00:11:35.039 --> 00:11:39.600 Caleb and Joshua remembered what God had done in Egypt in bringing them out of Egypt. 00:11:39.919 --> 00:11:41.360 They remembered the plagues. 00:11:41.600 --> 00:11:45.679 They remembered the way he parted the Red Sea so they could go through on dry land. 00:11:46.080 --> 00:11:51.679 They remembered that they were following a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. 00:11:51.919 --> 00:11:54.639 They remembered that God fed them in the wilderness with manna. 00:11:55.039 --> 00:12:04.559 They remembered that God had brought water out of a rock when they needed water, and because of all of that, they knew that if God promised them something, he would come through. 00:12:05.039 --> 00:12:14.080 Later in scripture we see we see David doing the same sort of thing, facing another giant from the peoples that the Israelites hadn't driven out. 00:12:14.320 --> 00:12:15.600 He used the same principle. 00:12:15.679 --> 00:12:26.480 He said, The one that looked after me when I was taking care of my father's sheep, the one that saved me from the lion and the bear is the same person who will bring this Philistine into my hands. 00:12:26.720 --> 00:12:29.840 And again, like Caleb, he didn't wait for the giant to come to him. 00:12:30.000 --> 00:12:35.600 David ran towards Goliath and he possessed what God had got for him. 00:12:36.720 --> 00:12:43.360 God's promise to Joshua and the Israelites was that everywhere that they placed their feet, he would give them. 00:12:43.679 --> 00:12:46.559 And everywhere they put their feet, God did give them. 00:12:47.679 --> 00:12:54.799 Caleb possessed his inheritance, but the Israelites didn't go everywhere that God had told them to go. 00:12:55.120 --> 00:12:58.240 And they didn't receive all the blessing that God had for them. 00:12:58.960 --> 00:13:02.559 And they didn't deal with all of the giants they were supposed to overcome. 00:13:03.279 --> 00:13:05.679 There were nations they didn't drive out. 00:13:05.919 --> 00:13:08.000 There was land they didn't take. 00:13:08.240 --> 00:13:10.399 There were giants they didn't slay. 00:13:11.279 --> 00:13:19.440 And there were places where they actually moved in with those living in the land already rather than possessing their own promise in God. 00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:28.799 And that was why Israel later on was still fighting giants, still had nations that were thorns in their side, because they hadn't taken what God had given them. 00:13:29.360 --> 00:13:35.759 Within a generation from Joshua, they'd actually all forgotten the Lord and they were serving the gods of the Canaanites. 00:13:36.000 --> 00:13:46.559 Large areas were not taken, and today modern-day Israel only only possesses 3% of what God had promised Abraham that they would have. 00:13:46.960 --> 00:13:53.600 And I wonder what the Middle East would look like now if they actually had stepped into everything that God had had for them. 00:13:54.720 --> 00:14:00.320 So what are the lessons that we can learn from Caleb, this whole-hearted giant slayer? 00:14:01.440 --> 00:14:08.960 Well, he held on to the promises of God and he waited patiently until those promises came about. 00:14:09.840 --> 00:14:12.879 So a question for you this morning is what has God promised you? 00:14:13.039 --> 00:14:17.679 What has God put in your heart that you yet haven't seen fulfilled? 00:14:18.720 --> 00:14:21.440 It might feel like it's been a long time from possessing everything that God has for you, whether that's money, sex, power, drugs, whatever it is, that there are addictions and God wants you to deal with them. 00:15:11.039 --> 00:15:12.879 For others it might be fear. 00:15:13.840 --> 00:15:19.600 Either fear of others or fear of what might happen if you step into what you think God's calling you into. 00:15:19.679 --> 00:15:23.120 Or maybe it's fear of failure that actually you don't think you can do it. 00:15:24.559 --> 00:15:30.399 Maybe it's things that speak people have spoken over your life and you and you just can't shake them off. 00:15:31.679 --> 00:15:41.360 Maybe it's guilt for something that you've done in the past and and you feel like God can never forgive you for it, and that you can never move into what He has for you. 00:15:42.240 --> 00:15:48.639 And maybe it's just disobedience, you know what God's calling you into, but you just haven't done it yet. 00:15:49.759 --> 00:15:58.639 You see, the Israelites didn't face their giants for 40 years, and because of that, they just went around in circles. 00:15:59.440 --> 00:16:12.480 And I believe God's saying this morning that even though you think these giants in your life might be too big, might be too difficult, that you might never overcome them, I believe God wants you to finish them off this morning by the power of his spirit. 00:16:12.799 --> 00:16:21.919 I believe he wants to take that fear from you and by his spirit equip you to overcome those things that are stopping you from stepping into what God has for you. 00:16:22.639 -->
