radical difference between the two. 00:03:48.479 --> 00:03:58.479 These decisions are those things in your life that you begin to look back on, and you know, because I stayed with that girl, because I broke up with that guy, my life went this way. 00:03:58.879 --> 00:04:16.480 Or maybe because I chose to engage in this activity, my life turned out this way, or maybe you can look back and say, you know, because I said no to that opportunity right there, I can now look back and see my life was forever spared from the carnage that if I'd have said yes, it would have led to. 00:04:17.120 --> 00:04:19.439 Maybe for you it is a school choice. 00:04:19.600 --> 00:04:21.360 Maybe some of you are in the midst of all of that. 00:04:21.519 --> 00:04:31.360 Maybe some of you it's a job choice, knowing that if I make a decision to go and take this job as opposed to this job, life looks very, very differently. 00:04:31.920 --> 00:04:37.680 This morning I want to talk to you in Romans chapter 6 about daily choices. 00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:47.439 These are choices that are not going to be as memorable as those fork-in-the-road, momentous occasions in your life that forever have changed everything going forward. 00:04:47.680 --> 00:04:54.399 However, these choices that you make on a daily basis, according to Romans chapter 6, are no less insignificant. 00:04:55.040 --> 00:05:04.000 In fact, these choices that you make on a daily basis will determine your life and determine your future. 00:05:04.800 --> 00:05:17.199 Ultimately, the choice that you have to make is a choice whether you are going to be a slave to sin or whether you are going to be someone who is a slave to righteousness. 00:05:17.439 --> 00:05:20.639 Last week we began a brand new sermon series called On the Way. 00:05:20.720 --> 00:05:25.439 We're looking at Romans 6, 7, and 8 over the course of the next few weeks. 00:05:25.600 --> 00:05:33.759 And what we talked about is this whole idea of how the book of Romans, in many ways, is a picture of your life if you are a believer in Jesus. 00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:35.680 You were born into sin. 00:05:36.079 --> 00:05:38.800 You not only were born into sin, but you commit sins. 00:05:38.879 --> 00:05:45.279 And there is nothing that you could do on your own to fix your sin problem in terms of where you stand before God. 00:05:45.600 --> 00:06:01.519 But the Bible tells us that God sent his one and only son, Jesus, to die a sacrificial death on a cross, and of no credit of our own and of nothing that we can add to the equation, God allows us to believe in him and be justified before God. 00:06:01.759 --> 00:06:06.319 The word justified means just as if I'd never sinned. 00:06:06.560 --> 00:06:14.720 Literally, when God looks at you, if you're a believer in Jesus, he doesn't see your past, he doesn't see your mess-ups, he doesn't see your wrongs. 00:06:14.879 --> 00:06:24.879 Instead, he looks and sees the perfect righteousness of Christ that has been credited to your account on your behalf because of what he did. 00:06:25.519 --> 00:06:32.879 The Bible tells us that one day if you die and you stand before God and have to give an account of your life, you're not going to give an account of what you have done. 00:06:32.959 --> 00:06:34.720 Instead, you're going to say, I'm with Jesus. 00:06:34.879 --> 00:06:40.639 And as a result of that simple statement, you will be able to experience eternal life in the future. 00:06:40.959 --> 00:06:53.920 Just as Dave talked about, there are promises that we see in God's Word, and we know that we're in this state right now where we know one day all of these promises will be fulfilled in heaven, yet we're still living here on earth. 00:06:54.160 --> 00:06:58.879 The sin nature still exists, and therefore there is this struggle. 00:06:59.120 --> 00:07:00.639 We're in the middle. 00:07:04.240 --> 00:07:06.879 We're growing, but we're not yet perfect. 00:07:07.120 --> 00:07:09.519 Christian life and apply the promises for the future into the present. 00:07:23.680 --> 00:07:25.439 Let's begin reading in Romans 6. 00:07:25.519 --> 00:07:27.600 I want to pick up in verse 11. 00:07:29.040 --> 00:07:35.519 It says, So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. 00:07:35.920 --> 00:07:40.560 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal bodies to make you obey their passions. 00:07:41.040 --> 00:07:51.839 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 00:07:52.160 --> 00:07:57.040 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. 00:07:57.600 --> 00:08:01.040 What then are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? 00:08:01.199 --> 00:08:02.240 By no means. 00:08:02.560 --> 00:08:14.000 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to any one as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin which leads to death, or of obedience which leads to righteousness. 00:08:14.240 --> were slaves of sin, you are free in regard to righteousness. 00:08:46.240 --> 00:08:50.240 But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? 00:08:50.480 --> 00:08:52.240 The end of those things is death. 00:08:52.480 --> 00:09:00.320 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and tension in this passage? 00:09:11.039 --> 00:09:13.759 Do you feel the wrestle in this passage? 00:09:14.320 --> 00:09:17.360 You very clearly have two different ways that you could go. 00:09:17.519 --> 00:09:23.759 You could either become slaves to sin, or you could become slaves to righteousness. 00:09:24.240 --> 00:09:36.480 What's interesting is we talked about it last week in Romans chapter 6, that the image of baptism is actually used as a visible picture of the reality that we are no longer bound to sin. 00:09:36.879 --> 00:09:39.279 We are no longer enslaved to sin. 00:09:39.600 --> 00:09:52.639 Sin no longer has dominion over you, which means this essentially, when I am making a choice to be a slave to sin, I'm choosing to go back to the very thing that I've been freed from. 00:09:53.200 --> 00:09:54.639 It makes no sense. 00:09:54.960 --> 00:09:59.360 It's not something that you would ever naturally think you should do. 00:09:59.600 --> 00:10:10.000 What I want to do is I want to talk to you a little bit about this whole idea that honestly is a very uncomfortable illustration that is being given to us about being slaves. 00:10:10.240 --> 00:10:21.519 Whenever we hear the idea of slavery, it should cause us to immediately push back because of the grotesque history that comes in our country as a result of slavery. 00:10:21.759 --> 00:10:35.759 Specifically, slavery in our context, we might think of is something that is forced upon someone under racial or ethnic lines, and it is deplorable and awful in every possible way that could possibly exist. 00:10:36.159 --> 00:10:46.080 However, whenever the people that would be reading this would hear the idea of being slaves to something, it would not have the same reaction because it meant something very, very differently. 00:10:46.399 --> 00:10:52.799 Instead of our current mindset, instead it would mean something more like indentured servants, meaning this. 00:10:52.960 --> 00:10:57.679 So Rome, let's say, would come in and they would overtake a territory. 00:10:57.919 --> 00:11:10.799 And as a result of overtaking that territory, you would have the people who would be overrun, who would basically exchange and set up a system where they would trade their freedom for provision from Rome. 00:11:11.279 --> 00:11:23.519 So, for example, it could be a short term or it could be a long term, but they were saying, look, I will work for you, if you will, for a set amount of time, and in exchange, you will provide certain things for me. 00:11:23.840 --> 00:11:28.000 A way that you might think about this in our modern day context is the military. 00:11:28.240 --> 00:11:32.799 When you sign up for the military, you are not signing up for you to be in charge, okay? 00:11:33.120 --> 00:11:43.840 When you sign up for the military, you basically are saying, look, you're gonna tell me where to go, you're gonna tell me what to do, you're gonna tell me what to wear, and you're gonna tell me when to be there. 00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:55.759 And I, in exchange for doing all of those things for you, you're gonna provide me food, you're gonna provide me housing, you're gonna provide me medical care, and you're gonna provide me a college education. 00:11:56.080 --> 00:11:58.399 That is the idea that's being presented here. 00:11:58.480 --> 00:12:05.279 And what he's saying is this all of us make a choice to be slaves to something. 00:12:05.600 --> 00:12:12.639 The question is not if you will be a slave, the question is what and to who will you be a slave to? 00:12:12.799 --> 00:12:20.879 And here's the irony the only way to actually find freedom is to choose to be slaves to the right master. 00:12:22.399 --> 00:12:30.559 And what he's saying is that the choice before us is to be slave to sin or to be a slave to righteousness. 00:12:30.799 --> 00:12:43.600 What I want to do is I want to walk through two different reasons why you should not choose to be slaves to sin, and then I want to give you some practical advice on how to choose wisely when you're faced with the choice of which one of these to choose. 00:12:43.840 --> 00:12:48.320 The first thing I want you to see in this passage about why you should not become a slave to sin. 00:12:48.480 --> 00:12:51.600 Number one, don't be a slave when you are free. 00:12:52.399 --> 00:12:55.120 Don't be a slave when you are free. 00:12:55.519 --> 00:13:01.600 One thing that's important for us to see is this passage indicates in Romans 6 that we now have a choice. 00:13:01.759 --> 00:13:09.360 If you remember back whenever we talked about the ugly truth, it showed us that we were actually way worse than we thought that we were. 00:13:09.519 --> 00:13:14.000 And as a result of our sin, we had no choice but to choose sin. 00:13:14.240 --> 00:13:23.360 And in fact, we not only didn't have a choice, we didn't mind that we didn't have a choice, because we gladly chose the things of sin as opposed to choosing the things of righteousness. 00:13:23.519 --> 00:13:52.559 And so therefore, now, because of Jesus, because of his death on a cross, because of his power over sin in our lives, it now means that we no longer are bound to being slaves to sin, which is an important thing for us to recognize because it makes no sense when people who have been freed from slavery to sin, instead of choosing to go after righteousness, choose to go back into slavery. 00:13:52.799 --> 00:13:56.320 Yet how often do we see this happen? 00:13:56.639 --> 00:14:02.240 Think about this, you know, people that may be addicted to drugs or addicted to alcohol. 00:14:02.480 --> 00:14:05.200 They may think that they have freedom in their lives. 00:14:05.360 --> 00:14:14.000 They may even think that the drugs or the alcohol will actually provide them freedom in terms of how they live or freedom in terms of how they feel. 00:14:14.159 --> 00:14:22.960 Yet those that are around those who are addicted to drugs and alcohol can be the very loudest to say they have no freedom whatsoever. 00:14:23.200 --> 00:14:27.279 They instead are completely enslaved to the pill. 00:14:27.440 --> 00:14:32.320 They are completely enslaved to the bottle, they are completely enslaved to the high. 00:14:32.480 --> 00:14:36.799 Literally, it tells them what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. 00:14:37.200 --> 00:15:02.480 Another way that you might see this, for example, is the sexual perversion that we see in our culture, or maybe the idea of pornography, let's say, whenever you see people who think that the expression of their sexuality in whatever way they choose, or whatever way they want, the culture says, is how you can experience freedom, you being who you want to be, is actually how you can experience freedom in your life. 00:15:02.559 --> 00:15:08.720 Yet we all know that there is no freedom when you are enslaved to the lust of the flesh. 00:15:09.120 --> 00:15:23.840 Ultimately, what happens is that you begin to spend money on things, you begin to spend time on things, you begin to be engaged in relationships that you think are going to provide you satisfaction, only to discover you only find more slavery. 00:15:24.159 --> 00:15:26.080 Happens over and over again. 00:15:26.320 --> 00:15:28.960 How about something maybe not quite as obvious? 00:15:29.120 --> 00:15:31.279 How about the person who's addicted to work? 00:15:31.600 --> 00:15:34.000 How about the person who's a workaholic, and what do they do? 00:15:34.159 --> 00:15:50.000 They spend all their time thinking about work and they spend all their time working at work, and then whenever they come home, instead of spending time with their kids or spending time with their family or spending time in meaningful relationships, instead, even though they may physically be present, they're actually mentally at work. 00:15:50.320 --> 00:16:13.759 They just find themselves at a different location, but their mind is still there at work, and they just keep working, and their mindset is if I can work hard enough, then I can make enough money, if I can make enough money for my family, then my family will be provided for, then my family will have freedom, all the while the work is causing them to be enslaved and not have any freedom for their family. 00:16:13.840 --> 00:16:18.879 Instead, their family doesn't even know who they are because they're at work, working all the time. 00:16:19.120 --> 00:16:21.120 When they're engaged at church, guess what they do? 00:16:21.440 --> 00:16:22.639 They're not really at church. 00:16:22.720 --> 00:16:27.200 They may physically be sitting at church, but the reality is their mind is actually at work. 00:16:27.600 --> 00:16:34.000 And so therefore they look up and they've been freed from their sin, they've been freed from bondage. 00:16:34.159 --> 00:16:37.600 However, they've chosen to go back into slavery. 00:16:37.919 --> 00:16:39.519 Doesn't make any sense. 00:16:39.840 --> 00:16:42.000 Folks, we've seen this in other ways too. 00:16:42.080 --> 00:16:47.440 How about the person who signs their kid up to go and be involved in some sort of sport, some sort of activity? 00:16:47.600 --> 00:16:51.759 They're thinking that it's going to allow them to be a kid, it's going to allow them to have some fun. 00:16:51.919 --> 00:17:00.559 It's going to allow them to do some things maybe that they did whenever they were growing up and they were younger, only to look up over the course of five years or so. 00:17:00.720 --> 00:17:05.759 And now all of a sudden, their entire schedule is not at their own mercy. 00:17:06.480 --> 00:17:19.440 Every single thing that they do, every dollar that they spend, every ounce of their mental and actual energy is spent literally enslaved to whatever the coach says the schedule is. 00:17:20.319 --> 00:17:27.759 And that wasn't what they necessarily thought originally that was the case, but now they found themselves stuck and they start to make this comment. 00:17:27.920 --> 00:17:38.960 Well, I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do because if I draw a line, if I push back, my kids are gonna lose their spot, my kids gonna lose their space, my kids gonna fall back in their skills. 00:17:39.119 --> 00:17:40.960 I want to make sure you understand something. 00:17:41.119 --> 00:17:42.559 You are enslaved. 00:17:43.359 --> 00:17:50.000 You may not have handcuffs on, but you're walking as though you have no choice over your life. 00:17:50.480 --> 00:17:55.039 And even though you may not necessarily see it, you may even say you like it. 00:17:55.200 --> 00:17:59.680 The reality is this you do not have control over your life. 00:18:00.400 --> 00:18:04.960 For some of you, maybe it's a codependent relationship that you find yourself in. 00:18:05.359 --> 00:18:22.640 Or basically you've found that you have identity and you find connection and you find uh purpose and life from somebody else, and so therefore, ultimately, their approval or disapproval, their words of affirmation or their words of criticism sting so bad to you. 00:18:22.720 --> 00:18:23.039 Why? 00:18:23.200 --> 00:18:26.960 Because ultimately it's way more than just words, it's identity. 00:18:27.759 --> 00:18:32.960 And ultimately, God has freed you from these things, yet you've chosen to be enslaved to them. 00:18:33.039 --> 00:18:37.119 What I want you to see is this you have a choice. 00:18:38.400 --> 00:18:47.039 You are not bound in slavery forever to what it is that you find yourself enslaved to. 00:18:47.279 --> 00:18:54.480 Because God has freed you from that through his death and burial and resurrection on the cross. 00:18:55.599 --> 00:19:00.960 And it is important for you to see, I can choose to be different. 00:19:01.279 --> 00:19:09.519 So it's vital for you to also see that it makes no sense for you to be a slave when you are actually free. 00:19:09.680 --> 00:19:13.519 Please hear me, you are not a victim, nor are you without hope. 00:19:14.079 --> 00:19:21.920 But you do have to recognize that instead of applying your freedom, you have instead chosen to go back into the slavery that you've actually already been freed from. 00:19:22.400 --> 00:19:28.960 Second thing, common problem that we need to avoid that takes place many times is this don't be free and experienced this at the church as well with people who basically are believers in Jesus. 00:19:39.680 --> 00:19:42.640 They've experienced the salvation that comes through him. 00:19:42.960 --> 00:19:53.039 However, they are not applying what God has done in their lives, and so therefore, they wake up every day assuming that there is hope that is out there, but that hope isn't for them. 00:19:53.599 --> 00:19:55.680 Maybe that's your story here today. 00:19:55.839 --> 00:20:10.799 Maybe you find yourself at a place where you have been, because of temptations or because of things that have come up in your life, you feel like that you know that other people have amazing stories and testimony of God delivering and God bringing healing in their lives. 00:20:10.960 --> 00:20:15.119 You just don't believe that that healing or that deliverance can come for you. 00:20:15.759 --> 00:20:19.039 Folks, there's a reason why we sing the songs that we sing. 00:20:19.359 --> 00:20:22.400 There's a reason why we preach the truth that we preach. 00:20:22.640 --> 00:20:39.200 There's a reason why we sing songs like Waymaker, Miracle Worker, Promise Keeper, Light in the Darkness, these truths that are meant to remind you that if God could raise Jesus from the dead, then He can handle whatever it is that you're walking through. 00:20:39.519 --> 00:20:42.559 First Corinthians chapter 6, listen to this, verse 14. 00:20:42.720 --> 00:20:47.680 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. 00:20:49.359 --> 00:20:50.880 Folks, I want you to think about this. 00:20:51.119 --> 00:20:56.319 The power of the resurrection is available to you if you're a believer in Jesus Christ. 00:20:57.599 --> 00:21:02.640 I talked to a guy a couple of months ago, actually, who was dealing with some addictions. 00:21:03.440 --> 00:21:14.240 And he was so down and he was so in despair, and he basically just was over overwhelmed with guilt and overwhelmed with shame and just thinking, man, there's just no way that I could ever get out of this. 00:21:14.319 --> 00:21:16.960 And I told him words that I want to tell you today. 00:21:17.119 --> 00:21:22.000 If Jesus could be raised from the dead, don't you think that God can handle your addiction? 00:21:24.480 --> 00:21:32.160 For some of you, what you need to hear me say today, that if Jesus can be raised from the dead, your marriage is not that big of a deal in comparison. 00:21:33.119 --> 00:21:35.039 I promise you, he can help you. 00:21:35.200 --> 00:21:36.480 I promise you he can help you. 00:21:36.559 --> 00:21:50.000 It's not gonna be easy and it's not gonna be immediate, but I can assure you of this you have a reason for hope because Jesus, who has been raised from the dead, that power is now 00:22:05.519 --> 00:22:09.680 It says, Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 00:22:10.640 --> 00:22:13.759 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again. 00:22:14.000 --> 00:22:16.319 Death no longer has dominion over him. 00:22:16.960 --> 00:22:19.680 For the death he died, he died to sin once for all. 00:22:19.839 --> 00:22:21.680 But the life he lives, he lives to God. 00:22:21.839 --> 00:22:27.599 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. 00:22:27.839 --> 00:22:30.960 Christians, we must not live defeated and beat up. 00:22:31.119 --> 00:22:50.400 Instead, we must fight against our sin, knowing that we have the promise and the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit that is living inside of us that gives us reason to fight and gives us reason to war and gives us reason to resist against the sin in our lives. 00:22:50.960 --> 00:22:54.160 Too many believers in Jesus just walk Fight against sin with the power of Jesus that has been given to you. 00:23:24.400 --> 00:23:29.200 Let me give you two points of application about how you can fight your sin. 00:23:29.359 -->
