chapter 8, Paul uses the example to the church in Corinthians of the church in Macedonia. 00:02:51.360 --> 00:02:59.439 He talks about how the Macedonian people gave generously, even though they were very, very poor, and being persecuted like crazy. 00:02:59.680 --> 00:03:02.639 They were being persecuted because of their belief in God. 00:03:02.800 --> 00:03:09.360 They were being persecuted by the people uh who upheld the pagan gods and traditions of that time. 00:03:09.520 --> 00:03:16.479 And because Christ's followers rejected that, those people turned and started attacking and persecuting the Christians. 00:03:16.719 --> 00:03:23.599 They were also being persecuted by Jewish people at the time who opposed followers of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. 00:03:23.840 --> 00:03:28.560 It's important for you to understand because they were in a terrible financial situation. 00:03:28.719 --> 00:03:48.800 And yet the Macedonians, they were so overwhelmed with gratitude for the believers in Jerusalem who previously had come to Macedonia to tell them about the truth of Jesus that the Macedonians gave to the church in Jerusalem, even though all the stuff was going on in their life didn't make it easy. 00:03:48.960 --> 00:03:56.719 So Paul is bringing up the Macedonians to the Corinthian church as an example to follow in this gracious act of giving. 00:03:56.879 --> 00:04:02.879 He talks about the Macedonians and the example that they are to all the believers, and he brings up this offering. 00:04:03.120 --> 00:04:16.240 And it's important for you to know that this offering is not only mentioned right here, it's actually also mentioned in Galatians, in Acts, and in the final chapter of Paul's first letter to the church of Corinth. 00:04:16.399 --> 00:04:22.319 1 Corinthians chapter 16 is talking about the exact same offering that this letter to them is. 00:04:22.480 --> 00:04:32.720 What's happened is the Corinthian church recognized that this generosity and obedience to God, this financial sacrifice, is something that they needed to do. 00:04:32.800 --> 00:04:40.079 So they committed to doing it about a year ago when they got Paul's first letter that we call 1 Corinthians. 00:04:40.319 --> 00:04:46.720 So Paul brought it up back then, and back then the Corinthian church was like, yes, this is God's way of doing it. 00:04:46.800 --> 00:04:47.519 We need to do this. 00:04:47.680 --> 00:05:02.720 And now here we are in 2 Corinthians, about a year later, and Paul is saying to the church in Corinth, hey, um, remember that you acknowledge God's will for your finances and how you should no longer view them as your finances? 00:05:03.360 --> 00:05:14.800 I just want to remind you that it's been a year, and I think you need to be obedient to what you already acknowledged as your next step, which is a massive sermon for all of us today. 00:05:15.120 --> 00:05:21.279 That sometimes your next step is to do the last thing God told you to do, but you haven't done yet. 00:05:21.519 --> 00:05:24.000 Sometimes that is our next step. 00:05:24.160 --> 00:05:26.319 So could this verse stand on its own? 00:05:26.560 --> in mind, I want to point out three things that we learn about obedience in this text. 00:05:49.040 --> 00:05:52.959 The first is this obedience isn't always easy. 00:05:53.279 --> 00:05:55.519 Obedience isn't always easy. 00:05:55.839 --> 00:05:59.920 It's very likely that a bunch of people in this room could amen that statement. 00:06:00.079 --> 00:06:08.000 You have lived this out, and you being personally obedient to what God tells you to do hasn't always proven to be easy. 00:06:08.240 --> 00:06:13.839 And if you're familiar with the Bible, you can even see how obedience isn't easy throughout all of Scripture. 00:06:14.000 --> 00:06:17.600 Look at Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, the people that we talked about a few weeks ago. 00:06:17.759 --> 00:06:25.199 They were obedient to God by not bowing the knee, not worshiping other false gods and idols, and it cost them, they were thrown into a fiery furnace. 00:06:25.360 --> 00:06:26.319 Look at Noah. 00:06:26.480 --> 00:06:29.120 It wasn't easy for him to be obedient for a couple reasons. 00:06:29.360 --> 00:06:31.920 One, God told him to build a massive boat. 00:06:32.079 --> 00:06:35.040 That is not an easy thing to do during this time. 00:06:35.519 --> 00:06:41.839 And secondly, uh, it wasn't easy because he became a societal outcast for being obedient to God. 00:06:42.079 --> 00:06:44.879 You look at Job, who was obedient throughout his life. 00:06:45.040 --> 00:06:53.279 The enemy of God came in and took everything away from Job, and yet still Job walked in obedience, even though it wasn't easy. 00:06:53.439 --> 00:06:57.680 Look at Rahab, who was obedient and stayed when she could have left. 00:06:57.839 --> 00:06:59.759 Leaving may have been easier. 00:06:59.839 --> 00:07:07.920 Look at Mary, the mother of Jesus, who was a servant of God and risking what everyone might think of her by being obedient to Christ. 00:07:08.399 --> 00:07:12.079 Look at the New Testament with Stephen, who was being obedient to God. 00:07:12.240 --> 00:07:16.480 God said, You need to preach my gospel, preach my truth everywhere that you go. 00:07:16.639 --> 00:07:18.079 And so Stephen was doing that. 00:07:18.160 --> 00:07:23.199 And as he was, he was told by the authorities in that location, you gotta stop preaching the gospel. 00:07:23.360 --> 00:07:28.560 And Stephen looked at them and said, Hey, being obedient to you would make me disobedient to my God. 00:07:28.720 --> 00:07:29.680 I'm not gonna do it. 00:07:29.839 --> 00:07:34.319 His obedience ultimately led to being him being killed by stoning. 00:07:34.800 --> 00:07:37.279 Obedience isn't always easy. 00:07:37.519 --> 00:07:41.839 In fact, a major and overarching theme of the entirety of the Bible is this truth. 00:07:42.079 --> 00:07:45.360 Obedience to God isn't always gonna be easy. 00:07:45.519 --> 00:07:50.399 We're actually told that we will have trials, that we will suffer. 00:07:51.040 --> 00:07:54.399 Is this not ministry. 00:08:03.120 --> 00:08:10.720 Whether that be to pastor a church or plant a church or lead a ministry or whatever it may be, AJ knew God was calling him to that. 00:08:10.959 --> 00:08:12.160 So what did he do? 00:08:12.639 --> 00:08:16.079 About a year ago, he left his career. 00:08:16.399 --> 00:08:26.879 Like, had a job, left his career, and now he's a resident at United Cities Residency Program, doing an amazing job, walking in obedience to what God has called him to. 00:08:27.120 --> 00:08:35.679 You've heard stories about uh people, I'm looking at David and Danielle Humphrey right here, who at one point God called them to go overseas as full-time missionaries. 00:08:36.080 --> 00:08:38.080 Like that wasn't easy. 00:08:38.399 --> 00:08:45.200 You hear stories about people who God calls to plant a church in a different city or state or country or whatever it may be, and it's not easy. 00:08:45.279 --> 00:08:53.360 Uh here's where I want to pause, though, because it can be really hard for us to connect with those kind of like seemingly big moments of obedience. 00:08:53.519 --> 00:08:57.200 So, what about the daily practices of obedience? 00:08:57.440 --> 00:09:01.440 And I think the point will be proven to you that it's not always easy. 00:09:01.679 --> 00:09:06.559 It's not always easy to deny yourself, even though we're commanded to in Matthew chapter 16. 00:09:06.720 --> 00:09:09.519 It's not easy to pursue righteousness, 1 Timothy 6. 00:09:09.679 --> 00:09:16.240 It's not easy to serve others instead of being consumed by serving yourself and your own wants and your desires. 00:09:16.480 --> 00:09:17.600 Philippians chapter 2. 00:09:17.679 --> 00:09:19.519 It's not easy to forgive people. 00:09:19.759 --> 00:09:23.200 in the workplace or wherever, whose dishonesty seems to be advancing them personally or advancing them professionally in a way, and you know God has called you to be honest. 00:09:47.840 --> was defined by disobedience. 00:15:06.879 --> 00:15:11.519 So I think that gives him a lot of authority whenever it comes to this topic. 00:15:11.600 --> 00:15:14.000 Um, God told him to build a temple. 00:15:14.240 --> 00:15:18.480 So David goes out and he is looking for the perfect place to build this temple. 00:15:18.639 --> 00:15:24.399 He finds the perfect piece of land, goes to the person that owns that land, and says, God told me to build a temple. 00:15:24.559 --> 00:15:27.440 I want to purchase this land from you so that I can do it. 00:15:27.600 --> 00:15:31.360 The landowner says, Well, first of all, you're King David, so like I'm kind of in. 00:15:31.440 --> 00:15:32.480 I don't have a choice in the matter. 00:15:32.639 --> 00:15:34.639 And second, like I the Macedonian church are super poor, and yet they have a ton of joy. 00:16:32.720 --> 00:16:34.559 They're described as being generous. 00:16:34.639 --> 00:16:42.960 And just in case you were wondering, this is talking strictly and purely about financial generosity that the Macedonians led out here in. 00:16:43.279 --> 00:16:44.240 Go to verse 3. 00:16:44.399 --> 00:16:48.399 Paul makes it very clear that although they're really poor, they still give what they could afford. 00:16:48.559 --> 00:16:50.080 I don't understand how that's possible. 00:16:50.240 --> 00:16:54.080 Like by you
