about leadership and just figuring out what that looks like to be and grow in my leadership. 00:03:05.919 --> 00:03:13.280 One of the persons, one of the authors that has been really influential to me, that has really helped inspire me and encourage me a lot is Jim Collins. 00:03:13.439 --> 00:03:14.960 You may know the dame Jim Collins. 00:03:15.039 --> 00:03:25.520 He wrote the book Good to Great, a four-year study that he did, looking at what takes companies from being just average, uh okay, good companies to becoming something that is really, really great. 00:03:25.680 --> 00:03:27.520 did not fall in times of great crisis, but they actually fell during times of their greatest prosperity. 00:04:41.360 --> 00:04:53.600 When all of a sudden, at the top and the peak, they begin to make we get from here down to here? 00:05:28.160 --> 00:05:38.319 What Jim Collins has discovered, what I want us to see in the story of King David is that so often the cracks show up at the top, not at 00:06:51.759 --> 00:07:04.959 Every single person that's hearing my voice is a leader, whether you're a leader in your company, whether you're a leader in your business, whether you're a leader at school, whether you're a leader on your team, on your street, at your home, in your small group, at a minimum, you're a leader of yourself. 00:07:05.439 --> 00:07:09.040 And that King David, as a leader, had a table. 00:07:09.120 --> 00:07:10.720 That's the image we've been using. 00:07:10.959 --> 00:07:15.680 And who he allowed to sit at his table got influence in his life. 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:20.879 Got to speak into him, got to shape the decisions and the choices that he made. 00:07:20.959 --> 00:07:25.839 And you also, as a leader, have a choice as to who you're gonna put at your table. 00:07:26.720 --> 00:07:31.040 Today, what I want to look at is a seat that for some of you is empty. 00:07:31.680 --> 00:07:36.639 And you have a choice today as to who you're gonna put in that seat. 00:07:37.279 --> 00:07:49.040 And this choice is vitally important because if you choose to leave that chair empty, then what you're gonna discover is you're gonna be finding yourself at a place where the mighty fall. 00:07:49.600 --> 00:08:00.800 But if you instead choose to put someone there in that sea who's gonna be able to speak to you when you need to hear it, it can lead you to even well no, when no one else would dare do it, still walks in and says, Hey, this is not right, and you need to know it. 00:08:33.440 --> 00:08:42.240 The bottom line for the message today, I want you to irony of the story that we're gonna look at in 2 Samuel chapter 12 is that King David did not invite this correction. 00:08:58.159 --> 00:09:00.639 But God still sent it to him anyway. 00:09:01.279 --> 00:09:09.279 And what you're gonna learn from David and the prophet Nathan is what it cost when you don't fill that chair. 00:09:10.240 --> 00:09:18.320 The invitation for you today is to fill that seat with someone who can speak truth to you long before you find yourself in a place where you need to hear it. 00:09:18.720 --> 00:09:21.120 Today I want to show you two moves to make. 00:09:21.279 --> 00:09:23.759 Then I want to show you one reason why anybody would ever make it. 00:09:23.840 --> 00:09:30.799 Let me set the scene up for you, though, in 2 Samuel chapter 12, because uh there's a little bit of time gap in between 2 Samuel 11 and 2 Samuel 12. 00:09:30.879 --> 00:09:35.279 If you were here last week and you remember, 2 Samuel 11 is a dumpster fire. 00:09:35.360 --> 00:09:37.120 I mean, it is just a mess. 00:09:37.279 --> 00:09:39.679 It is just a train wreck over and over again. 00:09:39.759 --> 00:09:41.919 Like it's just from the very get-go, it's a problem. 00:09:42.080 --> 00:09:43.440 What you see is King David. 00:09:43.600 --> 00:09:45.759 He's supposed to be out in battle, and what is he doing? 00:09:45.840 --> 00:09:47.440 He's hanging out, taking a break. 00:09:47.600 --> 00:09:53.120 He goes up on the roof one afternoon and he goes and he sees a woman that is bathing who is very beautiful. 00:09:53.279 --> 00:09:56.080 And right then he begins to send for her to find out who she is. 00:09:56.320 --> 00:10:00.240 He finds out that she is married and that she's a daughter of somebody else and he doesn't care. 00:10:00.399 --> 00:10:03.440 He goes and sins for her and he sleeps with her and he gets her pregnant. 00:10:03.679 --> 00:10:05.039 Now he's got a problem. 00:10:05.279 --> 00:10:10.320 And that problem existed long before he realized that it was a problem, whenever he made the mistakes in the first place. 00:10:10.399 --> 00:10:14.480 But the way he chose to deal with that problem wasn't to confess and to come clean. 00:10:14.639 --> 00:10:24.879 He instead chose to cover it up by now trying to figure out okay, how can I set this up to where it looks like the woman that I slept with actually slept with her own husband and that baby is his. 00:10:25.039 --> 00:10:32.000 And so he calls for Uriah, the husband of the woman, to come back from battle when he was out doing what he was supposed to be doing. 00:10:32.080 --> 00:10:35.440 And he tries to set up this arrangement where they would go and meet together. 00:10:35.519 --> 00:10:36.000 But guess what? 00:10:36.080 --> 00:10:42.399 Uriah, a man of integrity, doesn't go and sleep with his wife while his all of his army buddies and all of his friends are out in war. 00:10:42.480 --> 00:10:43.200 And so what does he do? 00:10:43.360 --> 00:10:48.159 He ends up not doing that, and David finds himself in a place where now his cover-up's not working. 00:10:48.399 --> 00:10:59.360 So he ultimately gives Uriah a note to hand back to the commander, and the note said, Put the men in battle, Jariah at the front, and then pull back so that Uriah can be killed. 00:10:59.440 --> 00:11:01.279 And that's exactly what took place. 00:11:01.600 --> 00:11:14.240 And what you see is this horrible situation to where David seemingly gets away with it, but at the last verse of chapter 11, it reads, But the thing that the David had done displeased the Lord. 00:11:15.039 --> 00:11:24.559 What you see, and what should chill us, is that the gap between the end of verse 27 and chapter 11 and chapter 12, verse 1 is a year time frame. 00:11:25.279 --> 00:11:28.320 For a year, David got away with it. 00:11:28.879 --> 00:11:31.759 For a year, David pulled it off. 00:11:32.159 --> 00:11:37.759 The man who committed adultery and arranged a murder to cover it up, and no one's close enough to him to notice. 00:11:38.799 --> 00:11:42.159 No one's close enough to say anything about what happened. 00:11:42.559 --> 00:11:44.960 Pick up with me the beginning of verse one. 00:11:46.240 --> 00:11:51.440 And the Lord sent Nathan to David. 00:11:52.720 --> 00:12:01.519 The word sent here in verse one is the same Hebrew word that's used 12 different times in chapter 11. 00:12:02.240 --> 00:12:04.480 David sent for Bathsheba. 00:12:04.879 --> 00:12:08.240 Bathsheba sent word back that she was pregnant. 00:12:08.480 --> 00:12:10.639 David sent word to Joab. 00:12:10.720 --> 00:12:16.320 When Uriah doesn't go home, David sends him to the front, carrying the letter that orders his own death. 00:12:16.480 --> 00:12:18.960 Joab sent word back to David. 00:12:19.120 --> 00:12:23.120 All this back and forth, all this sending, all this stuff happening. 00:12:23.279 --> 00:12:25.759 And now we get to chapter 12, and what does it say? 00:12:25.919 --> 00:12:28.240 It says the Lord's now gonna do the sending. 00:12:28.720 --> 00:12:32.799 I'm tired of all this back and forth going back, trying to figure out how to make this situation work. 00:12:32.879 --> 00:12:34.240 Now I'm gonna take over. 00:12:34.720 --> 00:12:38.879 And it says, the Lord sends Nathan to David. 00:12:39.039 --> 00:12:46.559 There's a year time frame between chapter 11, verse 27, and chapter 12, verse 1. 00:12:46.799 --> 00:12:53.519 But make no mistake about it, your sins will find you out. 00:12:55.440 --> 00:12:58.080 There is no statue of limitations Galatians chapter 6, verse 7 reads like this it says, Do not be deceived, God is not mocked. 00:13:11.120 --> 00:13:14.480 For whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 00:13:14.720 --> 00:13:15.759 I want you to write this down. 00:13:15.919 --> 00:13:23.279 The first way for you to have godly correction in your life is this invite the voice before God has to send it. 00:13:24.879 --> 00:13:30.080 Invite the voice before God has to send it. 00:13:31.200 --> 00:13:33.600 For a year, it looks like David got away with it. 00:13:34.159 --> 00:13:41.200 Like that's long enough for a baby to be conceived, a baby to be carried, and a baby to be born. 00:13:41.759 --> 00:13:44.480 And in all that time, David didn't reach out to anybody. 00:13:44.639 --> 00:13:50.720 Left to himself, he's keeping that chair empty at his table because he doesn't want to hear about it. 00:13:51.279 --> 00:13:53.279 What breaks his year of silence? 00:13:53.759 --> 00:13:56.000 It's not David finally reaching out. 00:13:56.559 --> 00:14:01.120 It's God refusing to let him fall in silence. 00:14:02.159 --> 00:14:07.759 What's amazing about this is that not just that God sent someone, but the way in which he did. 00:14:09.120 --> 00:14:14.960 God could have sent a stranger, someone totally random, to come up and speak to David. 00:14:15.039 --> 00:14:19.200 And that would have definitely been an effective way to unveil what happened. 00:14:19.519 --> 00:14:23.440 He could have actually chosen enemy to come and to confront him. 00:14:23.679 --> 00:14:31.039 And that'd be the way that he could A man that we know from 2 Samuel chapter 7, whenever David was in the midst of trying to build the temple, it says that he brought Nathan in, who both the prophet but also a friend to come alongside of him. 00:14:45.759 --> 00:14:46.720 What does this show us? 00:14:46.879 --> 00:14:52.879 This shows that David was given the gift of confrontation by a friend. 00:14:53.519 --> 00:15:00.240 You see, a lot of times when we think about confrontation as someone coming at us, we begin to get defensive as an immediate reaction. 00:15:00.320 --> 00:15:08.000 But what I want you to see in this story is that the sending of God is a gift of grace before it is a confrontation. 00:15:08.639 --> 00:15:12.320 It may not feel good, but it is good. 00:15:13.200 --> 00:15:14.960 Who are those people worked on staff together for a number of years at the last church that I was at, and we still have relationships, even though all of us are scattered. 00:15:39.519 --> 00:15:40.399 These guys know me. 00:15:40.559 --> 00:15:41.360 They know me very well. 00:15:41.440 --> 00:15:47.279 They know the things that I'm gonna do that that are gonna be kind of my quirks, they're gonna know my proclivities kind of checklist, it's just the relational life of iron-sharpening iron, where I get a chance to be pushed by these guys, not only in ministry, not only in leadership, but most importantly in people that are in your life who have the ability to come and ask you these things? 00:16:19.759 --> 00:16:26.639 I found that these men in my life are not something to be feared, but instead But you know when you don't give a spare key to somebody is whenever you need it late at night, whenever you can't get into your house. 00:16:55.679 --> 00:16:58.480 Because you don't have a spare key to give, right? 00:16:58.559 --> 00:16:59.360 Instead, what do you do? 00:16:59.519 --> 00:17:06.880 In order for a spare key to work, what you do is you go to your neighbor or you go to your family member and you give them that on a random Saturday when no one's paying any attention, okay? 00:17:06.960 --> 00:17:07.599 And what do they do? 00:17:07.680 --> 00:17:14.319 They put it on a key ring or they put it in a drawer for two years, never once think about it, and you never once think about it until what time? 00:17:14.559 --> 00:17:17.839 The time when you're at your house late at night and you're locked out. 00:17:18.240 --> 00:17:25.519 And then you're so thankful that on that random Saturday you gave them the key so that you can now get back into the house. 00:17:25.599 --> 00:17:33.279 In the same way, what I'm asking you to do is you're not gonna begin to receive the correction that you need in the midst of the crisis. 00:17:33.920 --> 00:17:39.759 But instead, on a
